Zenoskelis watched the other with a look of thinly veiled skepticism. For all that he claimed to be a lost prince of some ancient kingdom, Zenos was starting to think that he might be more of a wandering vagabond. He was even starting to think that he'd made a mistake by not driving him off in the first place. He admitted that he'd been intrigued at first, but now he was starting to feel foolish for even having taken Viserys as seriously as he had been.

"So let me get this straight," said Zenos, arching an eyebrow at his temporary companion. "You are looking for allies to help retake your kingdom... when you know you would be facing the armies of seven massive herds? And you don't see how this might cause problems for you?" Zenos was all for hostile takeovers, but he liked there to be a chance of success before signing his name to something.

Viserys could hear the doubt and even disdain in Zenoskelis' voice. He would never admit as much to anyone... but these were familiar responses. THis was one of his more clear-minded moments, and in his clear-minded moments he knew that his position was a tenuous one. He had nothing but words and a few fancy trinkets to back up his words, and words were wind. He made every effort to visit humans often and keep himself well-curried and with manes brushed to a silvery shimmer, but he had little other than his appearance for proof.

In a less collected mood he might have ranted and railed against Zenos for daring to doubt him... but Viserys had mastery over his emotions today. He felt the frustration but didn't let it show. Not yet, at any rate. Rather than lashing out, he forced himself to laugh, as if it was all some sort of joke for him.

"There are seven herds, yes, but I won't need to subdue all of them. Even now I still hear stories about how they await my return. There are seven herds in the land of Westeros, but they will not all be our enemies."

The prince seemed sure of himself from the way he talked, but Zenoskelis had been in the company of deceivers enough to be cautious still. "It has been years since you were forced into exile, you say?" he asked with an arched eyebrow. "Years seem like a rather long time to be waiting for a vanished king." He supposed that if the new rulers were tyrants then the soquili might long for the rulers of days gone by.

Even though they lived as long as humans, Zenos sometimes thought that the memory of soquili were far less. It seemed like they could forget about things they'd rather not remember in a matter of days, and all too soon begin pining for a past that didn't exist.

Viserys snorted and tossed his head, as if Zenoskelis was being ridiculous. "Our family ruled over those herds for hundreds of years. We've been out of power for merely a wink of time compared to our long history of just rule." This much was true. The first member of the Targaryen family had flown to the shores of Westeros several hundreds of years ago. According to legend, his ancestor had conquered the herds with the help of a massive dragon, the size of which had never been seen before and hadn't been seen since. Viserys' sister Daenerys had dragons, but of course those were pathetic runts. No one could go conquering with a beast no larger than a foal in size.

Hundreds of years was a little more impressive. It still could be entirely fabricated, of course, but it seemed to have a note of truth to it. The mazoku cult had a history that Xelloss claimed went back hundreds of years, along with ancient rivalries that rose again in each new generation. That was fine, but Zenoskelis had seen very little result of this supposed long history. There were some ruins with what may have been mazoku symbols inscribed in them, but that was it. Oh, and their master, Lord Ruby Eyes Rezo. Supposedly he was the reincarnation of an ancient dead mazoku leader. That was a little more feasible, but not by much.

At any rate, he was minorly impressed at the scope of history that Viserys claimed to be backed by. To be able to claim leadership over seven herds for hundreds of years, that was no easy feat.

"So why do you have so few allies if what you say is true?" asked Zenos, eying Viserys with mingled intrigue and skepticism.

That was a familiar question for Viserys. He had said some form of the answer what felt like dozens of times, maybe more. Sometimes it seemed like all of his life had been spent going from leader to leader, searching for help that was promised but never seen. His heart was cold, but his tongue remained sharp.

"We do have allies, a great deal of them," he explained, as if he possessed nothing less than absolute certainty. "But the Usurper has many as well. He has had all these many years to spread lies and disinformation about my family, and some of the fools of the Seven Herds have believed him." Viserys grew dark as he remembered the most vile of the lies told, that his father and the king of the herdlands had been transformed into a skinwalker. Such a travesty had to be nothing more than deceit.

"Ah," said Zenos simply. "I see." His wings shifted idly on his back in thought. What was the proper course of action in this situation? What would his father or grandfather do? He could not tell enough of the character of this stallion to know whether he should support his rule based on that alone. Could he offer help in exchange for favors later? That could be valuable if he ended up in an important position... of course... by then he might have little reason to repay the favor.

Zenoskelis grew bored. Viserys could tell this. The look of detached disinterest was another that he was acutely familiar with, and he seized upon one of his methods to combat it. "If you promise forces to join my army, I will not forget you when I become king again. There is much that I could offer you, if you'd let me."

He shifted his head ever so slightly but in a way that he knew would shift the jewelry around his neck and set the purple gems sparkling. Such displays were callow, but they often had the proper effect. A subtle reminder of the value of riches could sometimes be more potent than a more obvious one.

"Go ahead and offer, then," drawled Zenoskelis. What would this prince offer him, riches perhaps? Zenoskelis did enjoy a sparkling trinket, but without soquili having a unified form of money, they tended to be not terribly useful. As he was contemplating this, he heard a sound from somewhere behind them. It was muffled but unmistakable, the sound of something whimpering in pain.

Zenos' expression tightened ominously. He knew the source of that sound, and knew that it knew better than to cause a fuss while he was busy. He glanced at Viserys, seeing a quizzical look on the other's face. "Don't worry about that," he said. "Probably some pathetic animal just got caught by a snake." They did truly have some impressive snakes in the area, ones large enough to swallow a foal whole if the foal was unlucky enough.

Now it was Viserys' turn to be skeptical. He noticed that flash of irritation pass across Zenoskelis' face. That didn't look like someone irritated by a snake interrupting their conversation. It looked a lot more like he knew something that he just wasn't letting on. It wasn't the first time that Viserys had ended up somewhere that he thought might be unsafe, but it was enough to give him some misgivings. What was it really back there?

"A snake, you say?" asked Viserys. His tone was one of amused curiosity, not openly showing his doubt. "Perhaps we should take a look. Where I come from, the snakes are wretched little creatures to be crushed underhoof. I've heard that you have much more impressive breeds out here in the jungle. That much was true. He'd already seen some of the massive serpents himself.

Zenos' eyes flicked almost imperceptibly behind to the location of the sound. What he hadn't told his guest was that there was a second "guest" back there. Zenoskelis had captured the mare on Lord Ruby Eyes' orders. He didn't know what Ruby Eyes wanted some random unicorn for, but it wasn't his place to ask. He hadn't been intending to strike up a conversation while his captive was tied up in the bushes not far away, but it had happened all the same.

"I doubt it's still there," he said, trying to deflect Viserys' foolish curiosity. Why did he want to look at a snake, anyways? "And I believe that we have more important matters to be discussing, anyways?" he said this with a light tone, one that he hoped would draw Viserys' attention back to the present.

It was as he suspected, there was something back there that the part-kalona didn't want him to see. It was disturbing, but not necessarily alarming. They had been conversing quite well without any signs of danger or harassment. Perhaps the kalona had a good reason for hiding whatever it was back there. Still, Viserys didn't know that this was a situation he wanted to remain in much longer. He lacked guards and allies. If he was attacked by the honorless oaf, he might get seriously injured.

"Yes we were, weren't we," he belatedly replied with a winning smile. He certainly wasn't going to push the issue. Whatever pathetic thing was back there was on its own.

"Anyways, what I was thinking is that-" Zenoskelis might have said more, but a more unmistakable cry of pain came from the direction of the captive he had collected. Well, it was a group effort to bring that one in. They had all ganged up on the mare to drag her back for some project of Lord Ruby Eye. Zenoskelis hadn't asked and hadn't complained much when he'd been told to guard her. However, her presence did make things somewhat awkward for the conversation at hand.

"That... is embarrassing," he said, in a tone of bemused irritation. "Perhaps it isn't a snake at all."

"It really doesn't seem like it," said Viserys. His smile never left his face, not even as he decided that he needed to make a swift escape for the sake of his safety. His eyes flicked back towards where the sound came from, but he caught himself quickly and made himself focus on Zenoskelis, as if nothing had happened. "Well, it looks like you have matters of your own to deal with." Matters that might have to do with eating or otherwise harming whatever hapless soquili was back there. Viserys felt distaste for whatever barbaric tradition he had walked into, more distaste than sympathy.

"I'll come find you later when you're more free, shall I?" He was starting to draw away now. Glancing at the wings of the other fellow, he wondered if he could fly with those torn membranes. He rather hoped not. It would be a simpler escape if Viserys could fly and Zenos was unable.

"Please do," responded Zenoskelis, ever so politely. He did not attempt to stop Viserys from leaving, though he did watch him until he disappeared from sight, the sound of flapping wings indicating that he was leaving through the air. It was only when he was certain that Viserys was flying that he let his true irritation show through. His lips curled downwards in a frustrated snarl, and he glared back to where the captive was stashed between some bushes.

"You, shut up!" he snapped, stalking back to where he could glare at her pathetic form. "Didn't I tell you that already? You need to be quiet!" He had told her to be quiet, several times at the very least. He wanted to lash out and let his hooves punish her, but he refrained. Lord Ruby Eyes wanted them in decent condition. Now matter how much she aggravated him, he couldn't properly take his revenge on her. What a pity that was.
