Harland tipped his hat up as he looked at the tower ruins before him. He was scavenging, alone with a hunter he had never met before. He hoped the hunter was reliable. They were supposed to search for weapons tablets. Harland scraped one of his boot soles against a nearby blood stain that looked strangely fresh.

He tied his sunny hair back at the base of his neck, and waited to meet the other Hunter who would be searching with him. Silently, he wished it was someone he knew-- anyone with whom he would feel more comfortable.

He chastised himself mentally: when had he been so particular about who he worked with? Never before, he'd always been eager to meet unfamiliar faces. This time, though, he seemed to be in a weird mood. He just wanted to be near Alistaire, or Lilac. Or even Oliver, or shiloh.

"Hey, uh. Sorry for being slow." He jogged up to the ruins and stopped a bit back from the other hunter. He hadn't seen him before but at least he didn't look unfriendly like some of the older hunters he'd met. Not that he was looking as friendly as he used to but whatever.

He looked down at what the other hunter was poking at for a moment before deciding that focusing on the leftovers of whatever this was probably wasn't a good idea for now. "You ready to start," he waved a hand vaguely at the ruins around him. "poking around and hoping we don't get a hand eaten off?"

No matter how bad his mood was, it was no excuse to be rude to the unfamiliar Hunter. "Am in no hurry, wasn't countin' the seconds so to speak," Harland said, first, to try to assuage that. His accent was Irish, surely, but with some kind of twang to it that came from his father's side of the family and his mutt heritage-- the way his entire life had been divied up between his home and his father's home.

"Name's Harland Leander Belle, I don't believe I've had the pleasure of makin' your acquaintance," he said, tipping his hat and smiling as best he could. Harland looked off at the tower ruins, and tried to smile at the Hunter again, as if his joke had been funny.

"Maybe it'll make th' time pass faster if ye tell me a bit about yourself?" Harland asked, good naturedly, beginning to push aside some stones looking for the weapons tablets.

"Inoke Nalu." He managed most of a smile. At least a handshake didn't seem to be required since he wasn't -quite sure he could manage that. After the whole burn incident he still felt like his skin was going to peel off if someone touched him and the gloves only sorta helped. "Nice to meet you."

He poked at a few stones, not coming up with anything useful unless you counted crumbling rock and dirt useful. "Not much to tell. At least not different than anyone else I've met. Screwed up life, volunteered for this, woke up to hell. Kinda literally since I think i was awake for a few days before the first Insanity Titan attacked the island. Oh and I got lit on fire by the assholes who call themselves our leaders which no one seems to be batting any eyes at."

Harland listened in silence, moving more stones around as he took in what Inoke Nalu was saying. "Would ye object to bein' called Inoke? Or do ye have a preference?" he asked after the introduction.

He ventured closer to the tower, looking up at the sky.

"Everyone's got somethin' more to 'em than what we'll admit," he said, with a nod. Vague. "Did ye want to be infested with black worms, then?" Harland asked, stopping his task to look at Inoke.

He, too, had been lit on fire. It had been equally unpleasant for him. At least he hadn't scarred, honestly, that was his main concern overall now that the pain was gone.

"Everyone usually calls me that. Or just Ino." He nodded. He didn't really care what someone called him so long as it wasn't rude.

"No but that doesn't mean I like the idea that the solution was lighting everyone on fire and acting like it was perfectly normal." He probably wasn't ever going to get over that. "Being burned once was enough to ******** up my life the first time. A second time was completely unnecessary."

He was still sure there could have been other solutions to the insect problem.

Harland was probably the least likely person to call him something rude. It was a very unHarland-like thing to do. Even now, this was pretty much the apex of a bad Harland day, and his version of being unsociable was laughing and smiling a lot less than he normally would.

"Ye've still got a finger on normal then?" Harland asked, surprised and then laughing, shaking his head. He sighed, as if remembering the task they'd been put to. "Burned once? Pardon if my laughter could be mistaken as mockery," he said, sobering up.

"Normal for a given value of normal. Treating others like they're just slabs of meat you can use will never be normal." He nodded as he kicked over a pile of rubble. "I think there's something here." Reaching down into the dust and crumbled rock he found one of the weapon tablets they were supposed to be collecting. It was still creepy that the tablets used to belong to other Hunters, creepy knowing that for every one they found it meant someone died.

The question about being burned before caught him a bit off guard, still not something he liked talking about. "The day my sisters were murdered. It's ...I'm not good at talking about it. I just really don't like fire and reliving the worst part of my life because some Hunter lead just decided to burn us without a care is sorta a touchy subject."

Harland had a way of sectioning off the pieces of himself that felt things, because otherwise he was the kind of person who'd become easily overwhelmed. Still, his face contorted with displeasure as Inoke compared Mark lightning them on fire with treating the Hunters like slabs of meat.

Honestly, that's what they were. That's what they all were. What they accomplished despite that was the only goal, and here they were.

Besides, Harland's life was vastly improved in this place, and that was counting for the lightning on fire-- at least when he was lit on fire, he got to recover next to a dear friend. That was a luxury he could not have afforded in his old life. He smiled as Inoke found a weapons tablet. At least the fact they were relatively few meant few deaths, perhaps?

Then Inoke started talking about his sisters. "Forgive my rudeness for askin'," Harland apologized. He hadn't meant to pry into the other Hunter's past. His own past was largely whitewashed: The seal of Protection had altered his memories in his favour. Even then, there were pieces it hadn't touched.

"I suppose we've all got our triggers. I am sorry for your troubles, and I can see why it would have disturbed you to've been lit on fire above and beyond how the rest of us woulda perceived it," Harland said, still looking for tablets.

What he didn't say was that they likely all had triggers. They would all have to face them.

"Some of us probably worse than others." He poked at another pile and came up empty handed. "Given our pasts"

He still didn't get it. How everyone could act like everything that had happened in the Sahara was just normal. There was something wrong with that, with the way they were all treated. He got some of it. No one signed up to be a Hunter expecting a cushy life. It was one thing to sign up knowing you were talking into hell but it was another to find out they only wanted you to walk into hell so they could treat you like cattle.

He wasn't going to stand for it.

The way that Inoke said that, Harland had begun to suspect he was a little self-absorbed; what Harland heard when Inoke said some of us probably worse than others was that he believed he had it the worst. Harland was pretty sure that was a terrible contest to want to be in, and also that the winner might surprise them all.

So far Harland suspected most of the hunters had something dark that hunted them, which they'd tried to leave behind. He was no exception, but he wasn't about to bring it up with a stranger.

"Ah, sure," was all that Harland said, rifling through some more rubble studiously.

He wasn't cattle. He'd never be. He could learn, adapt, strengthen. It didn't matter how they treated him, because he was determined to always come out on top.

He looked over at the other hunter for a moment when the answer he got back was mostly silence. The bit that wasn't silence said a lot different than the other probably suspected.

Shaking his head he tried to change the subject. "I think we're looking in the wrong place. Maybe we should try another spot since there doesn't seem to be much here"

Subtlety was never one of Harland's strong suits, so it wasn't surprising he was easy enough to read.

"I can agree with that," he said, smiling. "Do ye think if we... went to the areas where the fightin' was heaviest, we'd find 'em?" Harland asked, the smile gone from his sunny features.

"Possibly. If we can find where ever that is." He nodded, looking up and over the ruins. ".... or we could find whatever else is lurking out here and end up as lunch. I would like to avoid becoming something's lunch but finding more of the tablets would be a bonus."

Better than poking at nothing but dirt at least.
