Cliff. Rob and Jason are still pretty good, but Cliff was the soul of the band. They never have and never will be the same without him.

My favorite is Cliff. But you're also forgetting Ron McGovney, he was their bassist before Cliff or even Kill 'Em All, so no one's even gonna know him.

Well I know about him, but for that little time he was in the band almost before they even settled with the name metallica razz I dont feel that its needed to mention him ^^ And I dont think alot of people here know about him either.

Actually, he was tuoring with them and "quit" just before they made Kill 'Em All. The band was already planning on replacing him with Cliff and he found out and supposedly quit, but James and Lars insist they fired him.

Yeah but who would pick Ron McGovney anyway even if they'd heard the demos when there is Cliff and Jason to contend with razz Cliff is my favourite bassist they've had, Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth) is sweet.

1. Cliff 2. Ron 3. Jason
Cliff was Metallica, he was their determination and when died, Metallica died. They lost all their respect, as they went from one of the least mainstream bands to the most mainstream thrash band in existence.
Ron was the second thrash bassist ever, mostly cause of his time in Leather Charm (Hetfield's band before Metallica, where they wrote "Hit The Lights").
Not sure why I said Jason.. He was good in Flotsam & Jetsam and Voivod, but he sucked during his time with Metallica =S

He had wrote and performed better bass-lines while in Flotsam & Jetsam and Voivod. He was hazed on AJ4A.. His Bass-lines on Load and Reload were quite poor. His Black Album bass lines were pretty good, though, but that's it.
