Sam bundled the three eggs in a swatch of cloth, lined with a plumage of leaves and silken feathers. Once each egg was safely tucked in its own little cocoon, he tucked them away delicately in his satchel. He hoped the extra padding would keep them safe on the way home. He'd even shifted to his Khehorian form solely for the purpose of having a bit more dexterity with actual hands for the packing process. The tops of the shells peeked from the bag, and Samael couldn't help but smile affectionately and lean down to give them a gentle nuzzle. "Time to go home, precious little ones," he cooed in his sweetest voice.
Finally, he'd had enough of Soudul. With new young to care for, it was high time he made his return to Eowyn. He hadn't minded Levi's parents. They were warm, welcoming, and obviously quite enthused for their son and his mate. But this dark, dangerous, inhospitable, unfamiliar continent was no place for the Gaili to raise Orakoi. Besides, he'd shirked his clan duties long enough... The eggs were just a very convenient excuse for leaving.
Everything seemed to be in order. Eggs packed, meal eaten, farewells said... All that was left to do was convince Levi they were on the right track. The Diabi had only glowered and sulked as Sam tucked their newfound bundle of happiness into the bag. The Khehorian could hardly blame him, as much as he wanted to. This was where Levi grem up. He had family here, greenery, foliage and darkness that he was accustomed to. He was a Diabi. A spoiled rotten Diabi, but a Diabi nonetheless. He had very little business being in the sunny mountaintops of Eowyn to begin with. It was hot, dusty, and rough; not things Oblivion cared much for. The initial move to Eowyn had been reasonable, but now that he'd had a taste of his old home again, it was difficult to go back. The only reason was Sam and the eggs.
Levi had come up with arguments for staying, but Sam had repeatedly and insistantly shot them all down. The Gaili was returning to his own home. He was taking the eggs. They would hatch around people he knew and trusted, and they would grow to love the warm sun and dusty earth as he did. Oblivion could try and stop him, but they both knew how that would end. Yes, it was a bit high-handed of him, but Sam adamantly believed he was in the right. Soudul was no place for a young couple raising their first clutch. The Diabi should know that, considering the way he came upon the nest they were now caring for.
Despite his grumblings, Levi had never had the intention of pulling the Gaili from his home. It would be convenient to have his mother around when the Orakoi emerged, but he supposed she wouldn't be of any more help than Samael's clan-mates. With a sigh, he resigned himself to their departure. "We should tell Mother and Father that we'll be off," he told his mate as the Khehorian gingerly picked up his satchel and hung it across his shoulder. "We can at least spend that much more time here, can't we?" It was a chore to keep the bitterness from his voice.
Sam sighed and plucked at the strap on the bag. He wasn't going to feel bad about leaving, but he also wasn't going to be completely unsympathetic. He reached up a scaled hand to pat the side of Levi's maw, drawing him down so Sam could kiss his silky nose. "Let's go say goodbye for now," he suggested. "And if it ever gets to be too much for you, or you start feeling homesick, or you need someone that isn't me to talk to, I'll stay behind with the younglings. And they'll need to visit Mammy Derliae often. It'll be good for them to know their family... So we'll have to come back together sometimes." But he wouldn't be living here. Ever.
The Diabi snorted, sending out a puff of air that rustled Sam's long hair and had it spiraling out to cling to the dampness on Levi's nose. "It's fine. No need to inconvenience yourself." He strode past Sam, coiling his tail around the Gaili's upper leg to coax him forward as well. "Once we're back home, I doubt it'll matter. Leaving is always hard, but I do have a lot to look forward to. It's all uphill from here." He turned back to give his mate a tiny smile before unfurling his midnight wings and kicking into the air.
Sam was only a pace behind him. It only took a few minutes before the pair was on the ground again, landing before the older couple that had just finished off dinner, it seemed.
"Leaving?" Derilae mewled after Levi had said his goodbyes. She rose quickly to all fours to confront the two standing before her. "You're really going to travel with eggs? That hardly seems healthy. If it were up to me, I'd wait here and then leave once they were hatched and acclimated to the open world and..." She glanced away, then dove forward to press her nose to Levi's neck. "No, it's best you go. I just thought... hoped... maybe..." She gave her feathered head a shake to clear it.
Sam was no genius. But he didn't need to be to know where this was headed. Even as the feathered woman spoke, he saw helpless despair creeping up into his Diabi mate's eyes. He was definitely a momma's boy, that was for sure. Samael moved in to give the female a hug about the neck before stepping away so that Levi could get in a few farewell snauggles. "We'll be around as often as we can. You'll have your own little one to take care of for now," Sam reminded her with a nod toward the borlarn. He was painfully pleased that he had an actual reason for leaving it behind now...
But as his gaze found the little blue creature, he couldn't help but notice the way it stood perched on the edge of its nest. He stared at it a moment longer, before he became positive that it even emmitted a rumbling growl from its throat. He glanced to Levi and his parents, still locked as they were in a family moment. The borlarn shifted slowly, away from the direction it was staring. Borlarn were predators, fearful of very little. This one was young, yes, but it had no less pride. And something was scaring it.
Sam crept forward, moving away from his mate, but laying a protective hand across the top of the stachel that contained his little treasures. The borlarn shifted toward the Gaili as he approached, having been well-aquianted to him over the past days. The borlarn was on edge. Something was out there, but the greenery was so thick, the darkness so intense, Sam saw nothing. Nothing until the first dragon leaped from the trees, it's large claws crashing into his shoulder and sending him to the ground with only a face-full of white teeth to tell him what had attacked.
All Sam could think of was making sure his little bundle remained safe. As his back hit the ground, he tucked the bag toward him, then rolled to the side to avoid a crushing blow. His arm swept against the earth beneath him, fingers lightly dusting across it before he twisted. The dragon roared above him as the ground shifted. Grass tore against its roots, leaving only thick, heavy sand that captures the Diabi's claws as Sam dragged himself free. he was quick to return to his feet, and even quicker to leap into the air and slam his knee into the underside of the beast's jaw, snapping its head back with enough force to pop its skull from its spine.
It faded quickly, and in the intermission, Samael looped the strap from around his neck and thrust the bag at Derilae. "Take this," he commanded as two more beasts appeared from the shadows, melding from blackness like they'd been there all along.
And then there was Levi. The Alihora charged toward one of the dragons, surprising Sam with the ferocity with which he attacked. It was a rare thing when Levi went in full-force. He had a tendency to hang back and attack with his black magic, but something must of spurred him into a particular voraciousness today. Levi could maybe handle one on his own. He was quick, agile, and intelligent, but he was also grossly out-powered and out-weighed. If he could fend one off while Sam handled the other, they should be alright, though. And his eggs were being safely guarded by their grandparents. The Gaili had to put them from his mind for now, and focus on victory here.
The two dragons were near each other, meaning Sam couldn't rely on earth magic without taking the risk of catching his own mate in the tumble. That left him with only brute force as an option. After his babies had been put at risk, he doubted that would be an issue for him. The Diabi was larger, thicker, heavier, slower, weaker, bent only on obtaining a snack... Sam wasn't going to lose. Not today. The earth crunched beneath him as he ran, spewing up little rocks with every step. The dragon moved forward as well, swinging out a claw to deter him from the wave of magic that followed the first attack.
Sam evaded the claw, then scooped out a shell of earth to defend him from the swing of dark magic. The blast slapped against his cocoon, and the instant the sound of the failed attack reached him, the Gaili jumped ahead, pouncing off his stone structure and diving for the dragon once more. With a twist of his wrist, the ground beneath the Diabi slid from beneath it, and he was off balance for just long enough for Sam to leap through the air, coiling his power about him as he returned to his four-legged form and crashed into the beast with his fangs and claws bared. They tussled for a bit, with Sam careful to avoidd any hefty blows from his adversary before he was able to crunch his teeth into the soft flesh at the base of its throat. It shook him. Sam was tugged off his feet, but refused to release his captive, only cause the bite wounds to deepen and tear until the dragon was no more.
By the time it was over, Sam was free to launch a surprise assault to help Levi finish off the last of them. Together, they brought the beast down, then sat panting on the disheveled earth. Once they were certain all was quiet, Sam turned to glower at his feathered mate. "You see this," he demanded. "This is why we have to leave. I can hardly see the danger before its right in my face." He leaned down to pass his tongue over his clawed shoulder. "No place for Orakoi."
