Tonight had not been a great night for one Elle Adelardi nee Campbell. A job was canceled, which mean the overhead for expenses would likely be at a loss and later her employer might supplement it and many supplies could be re-purposed, it didn't change the fact that she had set aside tonight to fulfill her party hosting duties only to be left penniless with too many cupcakes on hand because one, spoiled little girl threw a tantrum and ended up grounded with her party canceled last minute.
She hoped the party planning company got a decent deposit, at least.
At some point over the course of her sulking she powered up, and decided to spend the extra time set aside collecting energy. As usual, she didn't make much. This was really not where Galena shined, she pondered. But right now there wasn't any particular Negaverse related skill where she 'really shined'.
So that was how Lieutenant Galena ended up sulking on a park bench, one leg crossed primly over the other, and looking at the small orb of energy she'd managed to harvest tonight before she gave in and turned to the box of surplus cupcakes next to her and started unwrapping one.
Kids were spoiled brats anyway.

Captain Merlinite was ready for anything the night had to throw at him. He was feeling incredibly powerful, though if he had a bit more perspective he would know that the power of a Captain was nothing compared to what Generals and higher could attain.
He felt something spark to life nearby him, and knew it to be another Negaverse aura. He grinned and moved toward it, opting not to teleport this time because he did not want to waste the energy or end up falling on his face again.
Finding himself in the park, he spotted the source of the Nega aura, though he arched his eyebrow to find her sitting on a bench. He grinned at her as he approached, folding his arms over his chest and looking at her skeptically, forcing his grin away and trying to look as serious as he could, but his eyes glimmered mischievously.
"Taking a cupcake break, huh? I can dig that, but you should be working harder." It was his most serious Captain voice, which he was still working on. It didn't help that he was so amused and excited to show off in front of her.

It was not her finest moment, but when the captain aura approached and she saw Merlinite’s face, Galena’s initial and instinctual response was a sharp inhale which was ill advised, since she had cake near her face. Crumbs went down the wrong tube and she started hacking and coughing and after one sharp gasp of air, she practically snarled in the midst of choking, “What?”
He had been promoted? When? Why? What made him so special?
Even once she’d gotten her bearings, she looked up at him with her jaw agape and her eyes not bothering to hide the searing jealousy at his new rank and status. Not just any status but now he was her superior officer.
She could feel her molars grinding against each other when she closed her mouth, as her proper mannerisms went to war with her pride. She had to say something complimentary, it was in her nature, but she was so jealous she felt like the bile in her stomach would melt away all of her internal organs and kill her on the spot.
“You’ve been promoted. Congratulations.” Ouch. That was hard.
“Whatever did you do to deserve such an honor, Merlinite?”

Merlinite could see that the very last thing Galena wanted to do was congratulate him. Which was fine, in his book. It meant she had her own drive and she was jealous that he had gotten to this point first, seeing her own ability and knowing she was capable of being at the same rank or better. He liked that in a person, though it often annoyed him when they were in a position of rivalry, and he rooted for them to fail. This time, though, he just saw it as a positive thing, that would keep her motivated.
Maybe it would help keep him motivated, too, to stay ahead of her and rub it in the next time he powered up.
She still managed to congratulate him, though, however forced it was. That was still more than Merlinite would ever offer any one: he was far too self oriented to want to praise others when they do better than him. Of course, he had a very black and white world view.
"I kicked a lot of a**, Galena. The big bosses just knew they needed me in their ranks. Couldn't not promote me, you know?"

Galena stared at him, her emerald eyes practically feverish as she looked over his form.
Her tic of twisting the fingertips of her delicate, lacy gloves manifested once more, and with such quiet effort she could feel the threads start to stretch and snap.
"There's no need to be vulgar," She said simply as she adjusted where she sat, smoothing out her skirt in her lap and squaring her shoulders having been rest assured that Merlinite might have been promoted through then Negaverse ranks but he still had a fairly common demeanor and she was still a lady, thank you.
Didn't his mother ever teach him about swearing in front of a lady?
"Nevertheless, I am pleased your efforts were recognized, Captain," She said, and although it was a blatant lie, she took to formally addressing him by his title as she did with all of her superior officers, complete with the soft smile and little bow of her head in recognition. She had fully suppressed the rage deep, deep down. But the fire behind her stare was still violently outraged and jealous.
"To answer your earlier question, I was not scheduled to patrol this evening, however, a civilian job was canceled and it is far easier to be mobile around the city in my form as a Negaverse lieutenant. I assure you, I was not 'slacking' in my duties."

"What was vulgar about what I said?" Merlinite asked, halting in his excitement. One could almost hear his brain screeching to a halt and rewinding as he tried to figure out where he had managed to offend her delicate sensibilities.
"Why, you mean a**? That's what's got your panties twisting?"
He could see that she was lying through her teeth when she said she was happy to see him. He grinned at her, though, thinking that made it all even better. Her anger was probably jealousy, right? and he was already gloating, so she could hardly be blamed for her reaction. He was just not a very nice guy, when he saw something as amusing as this.
"Well, if you're not slacking, then I don't have to discipline you, though I'm sure you're disappointed about that. I am. Hey, but come on. Buck up. I'm sure you'll make it to Captain soon, huh? I mean, you do stuff, right?"

"I do not believe there is any reason to be so crass. Someone of your station should take a great deal more care in their language, especially in front of a subordinate and a lady such as myself," Galena said in a 'tut tut' tone that was more fitting for a preschool teacher in the way she gently admonished him and relayed the information like a life lesson.
Slight vengeance for his comment about disciplining her. The way he said it, what he had said, made her spine stiffen and one eye seemed to twitch just a bit at the frustration and rage she was attempting to keep reigned in.
"I should hope not, oh kind Captain, I would hate for our lovely encounters to take such an unfortunate turn. I do so enjoy my time with you."
So much hate, Merlinite. So much.

Merlinite could see he was getting to her, and that just amused him more. She was so jealous! That knowledge just made him feel even better about his promotion, and he smirked at her confidently in response to her chiding.
"Maybe you're right, and I should make sure to speak with more authority and grace, now that I am a Captain and little guys like you are going to be looking up to me. I'm sorry to have offended you."
He could see how angry she was getting, and her tone, especially her last comment, made him laugh out loud. No, she did not enjoy her time with him, but he was certainly enjoying himself with her. She was one of the most hilarious people she had run into, and he was going to make a habit out of annoying her.
Oh yes.
"Alright, alright, I'll let you off the hook this time, but you should really think about stepping up your game. If I make General before you make Captain, you're never going to live it down."

"Thank you for such a gracious apology," Galena said with stilted strain in her voice. She was still kind of twitching.
"No, I fear I would not. Please excuse me captain," She said, gathering up her things and leaving quickly.
It would have been very unladylike to give in to the urge to punch him.
