So, if you're a writer like me your first order of business in this guild is to be able to retain readers in a sense of free flowing words, a good story and a believable one with believable characters. If you do have a character you write about I urge you to use the link below and do as instructed within the link. It'll help you realize if your character is a Mary Sue or not. If it is, I not only again urge you to change but possibly even create a new character! Yeah, it's that grave. My words of wisdom have been dealt, do as instructed. I strongly advise you to. Nightime Story I'm did the test and scored over 50... ;w; Guess I'm not very good at writing so I'll stick to fantasying the story in my head with imagination ;w; This test does not mean you're "bad" at writing but simply to see if your character is a Mary Sue or not. Hopefully, you looked at what actually a Mary Sue implies then took the test. Do not be afraid to fail, failure holds us back from what would've been completed if we tried. Again, this does not mean you're bad at writing but I highly recommend you take a look at this link. View these statements as constructive criticism and leave your ego at the door. That's what a writer told me and I've been improving ever since. Link: http://www.springhole.net/writing/whatisamarysue.htm

I read that yesterday, but I don't think this limits to female characters only, right?

i got a pretty high score...but most of my RP's tend to be romanticized on purpose and i consider myself a strong romanticist. My characters do great things, and have great and terrible consequences thrust upon them. I feel this may be a little Mary-Sue-ish.
I also don't see it as a bad thing though

Idk....i kind of want my characters to have a mesh of allies and foes that they're woven into

Well a vacuum person/character is like he/she has no social or familial connections with anyone at all, like he/she don't make any relationships with anyone almost at all whatsoever

Nightime Story Well a vacuum person/character is like he/she has no social or familial connections with anyone at all, like he/she don't make any relationships with anyone almost at all whatsoever In one of my rp's(the one on my siggy) I'm a Pirate Captain who, due to his telekenetic abilities, can and does run the ship by himself. This is a guy who's been on his own since he ran away from his parents as a kid, and even had to make friends with a junkyard crow to fight the loneliness. But he hates that; I hate that, and it's really only that way because the guild is low activity atm. I ask people almost every chance i get to come join me in RP(and tend to be persistent enough that i piss some of them off).

I also don't see it as a bad thing though Sorry, I didn't even see you guys posting on here. Now, let's get into some writing. I'm going to tell you plain and simple that a Mary Sue character is nothing to be proud of. This means they're given everything with no trauma, for example, a family member dies and now you want to implement revenge, but there's more transgressors out there so they come in the conflict. Sure, I could get away with smashing a few down, but if I don't change my pace soon the story will get dull and unbelievable. You have to think, what problems will they face and how will they solve them? Will you easily rack down your enemies or take this chance to show how your character would react? I say it again, a Mary Sue is NOT good.

Nightime Story yep...i know god I made myself sound stupid... I don't find you stupid. Sorry to butt in on the thread but you actually bring up a very good point. Male and female characters are often held to different standards as far as mary-sueism. If I told you my female character lost her parents while she was very young, right, and spends the rest of her life obsessively trying to seek justice. Yet she's incredibly wealthy and beautiful and can get any man she wants. She does in fact, she gets every guy she lays her eyes on because despite her brooding she can put on a cheerful, kind and charming facade at the drop of a hat. And she's gorgeous. And rich. She's also a genius and a ninja too! With a giant super computer in her basemen and a really awesome car with rockets and another car that can fly. All the advanced technology in the world. And she fights crime as a vigilante and never gets caught because she's got a detective on her side, always has the right tool on hand at the right time- can defeat even super powered foes. Falls in love with a really hot thief despite her endless quest for justice... are you sicked yet, because I just described batman. He is definitely a "sue" by those litmus standards but nobody would call him a bad character. See so, excellent question; excellent point. And the answer is supposed to be "no" but very clearly there is bias. Also I want to point out that Batman IS a good character, despite all his eccentricities and overpoweredness because he's believable and in the end that's the only thing that counts. Do you buy that this character exists? Does the narrative treat him like he's an independent entity and not a product of the universe with everything working in his favor? Is he flawed? Yes, despite all his talents and abilities, he is. Litmus tests aren't rules, more like very tentative guidelines. Be free to create my friend. :3
