It was hard to say why Hanna had gotten it so stuck in her head that day that she HAD TO SPAR. Medical had cleared her for combat again a day ago, and she had spent most of her time catching up on paperwork and straightening up her room. She had managed to pick up a new book, which was delightful, but something itched at the back of her mind. When that itch got to be too much, she decided to scratch it with her fists. And Neomi was awesome enough to oblige! It couldn't have been a worse day for it. The sky was gray and overcast. The training grounds were a muddy trough of ickiness. Each step brought a splatter of mud up Hanna's calves. She was dressed in fitted black capris and tank-top, covered by a garish yellow parka that appeared to have been appropriated from someone much larger in size than her. She had the hood up, but it did little to save her from the rain that continued to drizzle across the field. No lightning though, no danger. Hanna thought this would add a new element to the fight -- difficult terrain. After nearly dying to the sand monster in the Sahara, she thought this kind of experience could be life-saving. Neomi had been there too so she hoped the other girl would appreciate it. Walking over to a training dummy, Hanna peeled off her wet sneakers, tying them by their laces to one of its stubby arms. Her bare feet squished in the mud, but it was much more pleasant than sliding around in her shoes.

Noemi was surprised when Hanna had posted on twitter about a spar, and though the girl was not very...well inclined to fight, she had much of the same thinking as Hanna.
That was, in the need of being strong, should another 'surprise' trip to the sahara that resulted in being in some titan's stomach with bugs should happen....At least Noemi MIGHT NOT cower behind Milo...or cry and be useless.
It was small steps after all for her to text the girl and ask to be Hanna's sparring partner, even more so in the rain outside. Unlike Hanna, Noemi's weapon Melusine was a mermaid, and offered a sort of...resistance to the splattering water. Not completely dry but not completely wet.
Small steps outside earned Noemi's boots a thick covering of mud though, sticking to the ground a bit until she saw Hanna near a training dummy.
Her hand raised in a awkward nervous wave, looking up to the sky. "Goo...Good evening Hanna." Noemi looked down to the girls feet..."Are...Are you going to fight without shoes?"

Neomi's approach was a squishy one. Hanna turned and smiled at her, leaning back on the training dummy. "Why not?" she said. "My sneakers are already soaked. At least my feet can be cleaned and dried faster." She wriggled her toes for effect. "We can think of it as practicing unforeseen circumstances... like losing shoes." The squishiness of the ground reminded her just slightly of being inside the titan. Hanna shook the thought away.
"So... how are you doing?" she asked, gesturing to Neomi. "My burns are basically fine now. Just have one nasty one on my back that's still a little tender, nothing serious."
Did she want to talk about the Sahara? Meh, Hanna wasn't sure herself. She had the innate desire to talk about it to death, but then a lingering feeling that it was a memory that should be filed away for later.

Noemi studied Hanna for a moment, before slipping her boots off, followed by her stockings. She set them aside, squishing her feet into the ground as well, much to the delight of her weapon and breathed out.
"Reminds me of the muck the pigs sleep in." Noemi looked down, "Is not bad thing, small reminders of farm home." She nodded. "Unforeseen circumstances, so good training. You are very smart." She nodded her head again, to emphasize the point that Hanna's point was indeed very smart. If Noemi was to fight, she had best to learn all the ways to do so.
"Much better? Ah...sometimes have nightmares of bugs. And blood." She frowned, closing her eyes. "But talked to Milo, these things we see, not so uncommon? Best to understand and accept now, even if scary. Like..." She waved her hands, "Like walking the basement with you two? Must face fear even if don't want too, even force too. Burns are gone though, my weapon? Mermaid. She doesn't like the heat, so she focused a lot on healing them."
She blinked, "Um, I am glad you are okay Hanna. Healed and all." She added, "Did you want to fight with weapons? or...or no?" It would be her first spar, and to be fair, her first time summoning Melusine for more then stopping her descent into a titan's mouth. The mermaid seemed to be excited despite her usual calm demeanor.

Hanna liked being told she was smart so she grinned widely. "A farm?" she ventured. "Where are you from, exactly? I'm from Maryland, before Deus. I was going to college up there."
It could be dangerous to talk about the lives before Deus since so many people had to walk away from so much. Like many, Hanna had mixed feelings, but she didn't regret her choice. Her life had purpose here. She was special here. Back home, she had felt paranoid and separated from her family. It was weird to be born to people she felt so different from. Even if she missed them from time to time, Hanna preferred to know the truth about the things that go bump in the night.
Still, Hanna preferred to talk about the old life than weapons. Her own weapon, Adelphe, was being hateful lately. She had allowed Hanna to be hurt in the Sahara and had put in her efforts into healing her, but not as quickly as she could have. Hanna could feel the resentment bubbling off her counterpart, but the siren had not yet been willing to talk about it.
"No weapons," she said quickly, perhaps too quickly. "I don't get a lot of chances to practice hand-to-hand. I thought it might be good?" Hanna didn't have a lot of faith in Adelphe at present. "I'm glad we're both better." Truth be told, Hanna had bad dreams about it too; she just didn't share that with Neomi.

"A farm!" Noemi nodded, "Ah originally we lived farm from Moultan, Texas. Very big farm and very small town? I didn't go to school there, was homeschooled so I spent very little time in small town." She pursued her lips, "I was ah...only one in town that could see the shadows? The things that moved in night, but could never tell parents. I came here to protect them."
Did she regret it? Everyday. She wasn't meant for this island, she would tell herself. She was just a small scared girl and this was a big bad world.
"No weapons, okay."
Mel sighed,
Noemi brought her hands up, watching Hanna.

Homeschooled. A grin quirked on Hanna's lips. She had always thought homeschooled kids were sheltered and weird. Sure, Neomi did seem a little bit sheltered, but she was sweet and welcoming too. If anything, she just seemed tentative, not weird. Hanna was the weirdo with facial tattoos. Plus, being homeschooled in Texas was probably better than going to school to small town Texas. "Ah weird," she said. "So different from me. No farms near me for miles, just dirty streets and homeless people. Though there were some farms deeper into Maryland than where I lived."
Stepping away from the training dummy, Hanna raised her fists to mirror Neomi's. "All right, bruiser," she said, "let's do this."

As the two girls moved toward each other, Hanna feinted left and then took the first blow, aiming for the right side of Neomi's ribs.

"Maryland is very far away!" Noemi nodded, "Very different here. Many people from many places? Li..Like Milo is hawaiian? And he does his weird poses for his show...The rangers?" She nodded, "And Shu is from far away, she is very small and likes...candy and cute things."
"B...Bruiser?" Noemi squeaked just as Hanna moved into the punch dedicated to her ribs. It hit, and spooked the mist trainee but it didn't hurt like she thought it would.
Noemi shifted her feet in the ground, sliding a bit as she pulled back a fist to punch at Hanna...Thanks to the mud though, she tilted a little to strongly into the punch, hitting Hanna's shoulder with more force then she wanted.
"AH SORRY HANNA!"

Her own punch barely grazed, but Neomi's packed a wallop. Hanna staggered back a moment. "No apologizing -- this is a spar!" she said.
Falling back into her stance, Hanna tried to ease up. Her body felt tense. "What is the Rangers show? You have mentioned Milo's poses before -- what is that?" she asked, rubbing at the place where the other girl had struck. "Shu is definitely a sweetheart."
Raising her fists again, Hanna came in for another strike while asking, "Do you hang with Peyton or Cami?" So far, she had spent the most time around those two girls. Peyton seemed pretty popular, as far as Hanna could tell. Her own fondness for the girl stemmed from the fact that she was the first person, other than Bix, who had helped Hanna when she came back out of the pod.

Hanna's hit came again, at least Noemi was prepared for the idea of someone coming at her, grazing off her shield again with a slight sting. It didn't stop her from wincing just a bit.
She'd get used to it with time, she told herself.
"Ranger show...uhm..." She tried to think, "I...I don't know if he ever showed me. But I saw him one day in his room, doing poses like..." She flushed a bit as she mimicked Milo for Hanna to see:
She did all the poses so Hanna could understand the scope of what Milo was capable of.
"Peyton or Cami? I do not know them...they are on twitter though si?" Noemi had seen the small pictures. "I..I only know few people. Very shy, too shy for friends yet." As far as Noemi knew, her friends consisted of Milo, Oliver and Shu.
Since she was so busy posing, she really didn't get an attack in.

Hanna stopped for a moment to watch Neomi pose. It took her a minute, but then it clicked. "Oh, wait, like Power Rangers? Is he, like, an actor or something?" she said, ducking low and kicking out at the other girl's legs. She managed her to knock her, though the Fear shield bounced her leg away. "Yeah, Peyton and Cami are all OVER Twitter," she said. "Peyton is the really short girl with blonde and pink hair. Cami was the redhead who stripped down to her underwear in quarantine. They were with us at the Sahara." Hanna could still remember watching Peyton fall into the Sarlacc's mouth and hearing Cami scream. It made her shudder. It was true that Neomi was shy. That quality would perhaps be why she and Hanna would never be best friends, but it didn't mean Hanna didn't like her. She just tended to be a little acidic and knew from experience that her personality wore on people like Neomi. "Well, you weren't too shy to come spar me," she added. "Why did you end up joining Deus? I would think it wouldn't be as attractive to shy people." HP: 34/40

"Um...is that what it is? I think so...He is very much into it?" Noemi blinked...."M..Maybe he is? he must keep up actor work even though he is hunter now!" Noemi clapped her fist into her hand, because it all made sense. "No wonder he acts the way he does! Always actor!" She wondered if that's why he was so good at smiling regardless of what happened.
"Ah yes! I see Peyton tweets with the ones known as Rep and Mimsy and Taym? They...They are interesting bunch." A bit intimidating though with all they talked about. She was kind of grateful she had Shu to talk too on there.
"Ah...I am ashamed to say during that time I was...crying...too many tears to see people...." She looked away, "It was not good."
She smiled a bit. "Sm...small steps!" She frowned again, trying to figure out how to respond to the question..."¿Cómo decirlo? Era...-" She corrected herself, "I was farm girl, who could see shadows. I told my parents once but they thing it just little kid fear, I would grow out of it. But I grew and they didn't go away and one day, while in the stable stalls, I got hurt trying to soothe our mare, she was spooked by shadows....They were getting bolder. I left to protect parents and understand why I see these things." She shook her head, "I did not think I would fight for life. They told me they would help me cope with it, not fight like this. Why did you come to Island?"

Hanna had often wondered what people did before Deus. It was a bit like camp -- you could invite an entirely new identity if you wanted and no one would be the wiser. There were certainly little white lies she told here and there. Was there anyone who had just totally invented their past? Maybe Milo was one of them? ...nah, he'd probably pick something a bit cooler than Power Rangers re-enactor. "Must be," Hanna said, trying to keep her sparring stance loose. When she got too uptight, that was when she started to fumble. Neomi had said something about the shadows on the farm before. Hanna was hoping to pry out fresh information, but she didn't want to pour salt in the wound. It had been years since Hanna had left her family; maybe it was a much more recent experience for Neomi. "I was in college," she said, feinting left and then striking right. "Things had started to spiral for me. I mean, I'd always been a conspiracy theorist, and I'd always insisted that there was magic and mysterious creatures and all that jazz. But that last year of college... yeah, I spiraled. Got these." She pointed to the tattoos on her face. It had been an impulse choice -- a reason she could control for people to think she was weird. "Got... a lot of things. Night terrors. I was convinced that there was something that watched me from the corner of my room at night. I got reckless. I started doing dangerous things trying to push the boundaries." Graveyards, raves, long dark walks at night where things other than Fear could get her. She laughed, a bit awkwardly. "Anyway, Deus finding me probably saved me from myself." HP: 34/40

"College?" Noemi didn't follow Hanna's feint, taking the hit with surprise and stepping back. "Ah...Ah sorry, you're very good!"
She blinked, "Oh...I'm sorry Hanna, that doesn't seem fun at all." She wanted to ask more about the tattoo's, because now the girl had it permanently but...
"Are you glad...to be at deus? It's a better place for you?" She said it as she hit at Hanna's arm.
