The newborn nova floated deep in the seaweed as her father had commanded. Normally this would be a place of fear and danger but he had checked it himself first before allowing her anywhere near it. He was sure there were no underwater predators lurking to snap away his precious little mermaid and so she stayed, fidgeting impatiently, watching as the kelp swayed back and forth with the rhythmic tug of the ocean waters. It reminded her of her father. So unmovable. So big.
He was...kind of scary.
Still, Adrina admired her father and even endeavored to swim like him, side to side like a big snake than the gentle undulations of her mother. Momma was so graceful but Adrina though the way her father swam was just too nifty.
The novas belly rumbled as she waited and she stuck her head out of the kelp fortress to see if her father was on his way.
---
And on his way he was. Llyr moved at his slow, deliberate pace, his eyes empty but in his mouth he carried a large fish. It had been too slow to get away from him and now it would be dinner for his little mermaid.
As he approached the kelp he saw Adrina's red face vanish back into the green and he repressed a smile. She had disobeyed him, yes...But it was...What was the word...cute?
It was...cute. Yes. Perhaps this time he would allow the transgression.
The children he had produced with Des'tai had been an interesting change to his life. He now had responsibilities to keep not only them safe, but he had to keep more of an eye on Des'tai. Of course she could take care of herself, but a pregnant mare was always looked upon as more fragile and should any star make the mistake of injuring his...unborn and the mare carrying them, they would come to know true pain.
"Come, children," he called and he released the entire fish to Adrina as she came out, watching as her eyes went wide with shock. The look was quickly followed by glee.
"Thank you father," she whispered before taking a huge bite.

Syrena admired their father for a different reason. She didn't wish to swim like him, but she wished to make him proud more than she did her mother. Mother seemed more savage, without a clear purpose to her motives sometimes. Anyone getting too close to her babies was quickly snapped at with her sharp equine teeth or reduced to a mess by her acidic tongue, depending on her mood. And sometimes the other creature didn't even need to threaten the foals. She just did it out of pure fun.
Father was the same, but to a little foal's mind, he looked more calculating. Like he had a mission and every action was towards this mission. For whatever reason, he could seem to do no wrong in Syrena's eyes.
However, she admired her mother's ability to charm. When she was grown, Syrena didn't want to swim like a snake like father. She wanted the gentle glide of mother. The swish of her fins so delicate in the water like they were made of the finest silk that would crumple at the wrong touch. Mother told her she had the makings of a charmer already with the look of her eyes. Arina was prettier, though, with her lovely streaks of blue and red on her coat and in her mane. When Syrena seen herself, she thought she looked sick.
She floated there now, tail curled around the very rocks the kelp was, letting the current take her back and forth. The underwater plants tickled her. She was almost in a doze by the time Llyr returned. At the sound of his voice she started, the blue of her eyelids shrinking and expanding as she blinked sleepily. She let go of the rock to join her sister, not able to hide a yawn. Sitting in the kelp always made her sleepy. But in the ocean there were few places to hide that didn't already have an owner.

Llyr scowled at the kelp until his other daughter emerged and his annoyance was replaced with his usual blank, stoic look. Reaching out with his mouth, he bit the fish clear into three parts, keeping one pinned to himself in case Davey was also hungry while nudging the other towards his other little mermaid. Syrena was a lovely thing, though more pale than her siblings. She looked the most like him and Llyr took pride in that fact. He enjoyed that one of them took after him. While they were all lovely to look at, this one for sure confirmed that they were also his and not just Des'tai's. He knew she had plans for them but he did as well. They would have to come to an agreement. "Eat, Syrena" he commanded with a gentle tone. He knew they had to be hungry and he would make sure they did not want for food until they were old enough to hunt for themselves. --- Adrina claimed the other third of the fish, chewing on it with relish. It was fresh, that was for certain and even though he had split it up, there was still so much food! Conversation became less and less important and filling her gurgling belly became top priority before she started eyeing her sibling's portions. What if she was still hungry?

Davey knew he'd been told to stay in the kelp bed, where their father could be sure that there were no big animals looking for a tasty snack of foal, but the sun was shining and making the surface sparkle all shiny-like, otters dove into the water in the distance, and there was an octopus in his ear. All in all, for a hyperactive colt, staying still was just not on the agenda.
It wasn't that Davey didn't respect his father and mother--on the contrary, he admired them both greatly. He couldn't decide between adopting his father's gravitas or his mother's charm. It changed day by day, which one he'd imitate. All except his swim--he swam like an eel, just like his father. No. It wasn't that he disrespected his father, it was that he just didn't like to stay still. And besides, what big dumb predator would be big and dumb enough to pick a fight with a god? 'Cause Father, he was a god, and he wouldn't let anything happen to his progeny. No, Davey was quite safe in any place that his father called home, of that he was certain. So he floated on the surface, ducking his head down and pawing at his ear to get the invertebrate out and to keep an eye on his sisters. They would be an early warning system for when their father got home.
As it happened, he didn't notice his sisters having moved until it was too late. He rushed down through the water like a hungry predator himself, aiming for the fish. "Is there any left?" he asked and prepared himself for rebuke.
