The water was warm. Oh, it was so warm and so nice. Illy couldn't remember the last time it was this warm, but she hadn't been to the shallows for a while either, where all the heat tended to concentrate. She loved the warmth, and spring and summer were the only times she got it. Sure, that was half the year... But the rest of the time, the water was cool. And in winter, she felt like an icicle. A rainbowy, seahorsey icicle.
Flipping over to warm her stomach under the sun, Illy dug her fins carefully into the sand, watching for crabs - a pinch to the fin would mean a cut and, quite possibly, a scar or a permanent tear. And she loved her bubbly fins too much to let that happen. Sighing contentedly, she sat there, glad that the water would shield her from sunburn. When she was little, still a filly, she'd found out the hard way that sun did damage, especially to her sensitive skin, as she floated on the surface of the lake to soak up the sun. The skin and tiny scales on her dorsal fin had slowly peeled off, burning as new skin emerged beneath the damaged section. It had taken days, though to the filly, it had felt more like years. Now she knew better, and floated just below the surface in a foot and a half of water, just shallow enough that she had a few inches over her head (well, now her hooves, as she'd flipped over) to spare.
Sitting there in the shallows in the warmth, Illy began to hum. It was her favorite thing to do, the perfect pastime. She'd begun humming when she was still locked away in her shell, listening to her mother's voice. It had soothed her when she was alone, and the comforting presence of her sibling soon left while her mother was asleep, taken by the voice Illy had since learned was her father, but she could no longer remember what he sounded like. Just that she had recognized him, for a little while.
Closing her eyes, she hummed, her red-violet mane and rainbow markings starkly visible against the beige-y sand of the seafloor. Thankfully, the seaweed was out a little farther, and it didn't block her sun.

Leilani had come to the seashore after a long a tiresome journey. She had truly just needed to travel somewhere for strictly herself. Her previous patients had taken up so much of her time, and she had lost so many of them to the reaper, that she just needed some rest. That awful herd battle she had come across. It still haunted her dreams. The screaming and death. Why did they have to fight so.... Shaking her head she looked out over the beautiful bay she had come across. Truly this was her first visit to the seashore. She breathed in the salt laden air and sighed to herself. "Truly a wonderful view." With a quick motion she opened her colorful wings and stretched them to their fullest extent, her tail swished back and forth lazily with the ecstasy of the stretch.

Illy jumped as a voice sounded right over her head, the whole of her tiny body flinching away from the noise and deeper into the sand. She opened her eyes, but her view was obstructed by the swirling mass of her mane. Shaking it out of her face, she righted herself and floated upward, eyes just over the surface and ears laid back against her skull so as not to draw attention to herself - it wouldn't do to be eaten on such a nice day. Her two-toned eyes found the shape of a giant, and a mare, by the look of it.
She stood probably six times Illy's height and was nearly all pale greens, excepting wingtips and forelegs, which were a fiery orange... Not to mention the dangerous-looking horn, which ended in a sharp point. Curious, she floated closer, until her hooves brushed the sand and her dorsal fin furrowed the water that lapped gently around her. The mare stretched luxuriously, wings furling outward and tail - a cat's tail? - flicking. Strange, beautiful creature. She should write a song about this mare someday, the mare with fireflowers in her hair. But for now, introducing herself would do.
Poking her head above the water a little bit, so head and neck both were above the surface, Illy put on a smile. "Hello," she said quietly, doing her best not to startle the mare before her.

The sudden voice from below her was startling but she was more curious than afraid. She folded her wings and looked down seeing a small head poking above the water so she lowered her head and looked closely at it. "Oh! Hello there!" She smiled brightly at the little mare in the water. She flicked her wing open and closed to resettle it and a single orange feather fell out and landed in the water near the seathi.
Mahogany Sunset Sorry for the wait! My computer didn't complete the post last time and I had to rewrite it.

As the mare closed her wings, Illy felt a pang of disappointment. The span of them had been so beautiful and vibrant, so soft-looking, that it was a shame for them to hide at her sides. But then the mare was lowering her head - and her horn - and a million thoughts ran through her head as the mare came down closer to her level. The first was something like, Oh, gods, no, she is going to spear me with that thing? She could just see herself dangling from it, her rainbowy body slowly fading of color in the sunlight that would suddenly seem much harsher than it would normally. Her second thought was, Look how it shines! The horn was elegant, but bold, as well, and for some reason, Illy could imagine some sort of fiery magic flickering from the end of it. That would never happen, of course, though... Her mother had always told her that her imagination ran away with her sometimes and took her beyond the bounds of reality. In reality, magic, or flame, or anything like that, could never flow from a horn. It was just a horn. Right?
Still, something in her told her that when she wrote a song about this mare with the orange eyes and fireflowers in her hair, there would be magic flowing from her horn. Yup.
"Hello," Illy said meekly, overwhelmed by the closeness of the mare. Her head was almost the size of Ilyrana's whole body, and the little seathi had never felt more tiny. "My name's Ilyrana. What's yours?" She smiled eagerly at the mare as she studied her closely. Every detail she took in was another detail that could be added into the glorious song. Like the vine marking on her face, as elegant as the rest of her.
Something distracted her from studying the mare and her soft green fur, though - she flicked her wing and a feather fell from it. With a gasp, Illy swam over to it, nudging it with her hoof back to the mare. It was so vividly orange that it almost glowed, and it made Illy's breath catch. "Can I keep it?" she asked, and then bit her tongue, ashamed of herself. How rude was that? It belonged to the mare, obviously she'd want it back. What if she couldn't fly without it? "I'm sorry, I mean... Do you want it back?" Her eyes cast downward, Illy shook her head at herself. Sometimes her love - her need - of pretty things was too much, too obvious. And rude. So. Rude. Still, she couldn't help but admire this feather that sat in the water before her, a few droplets of water beading its smooth, soft surface. What if it was magic? What if, if the mare let her have it, it could make her fly?
Oh yes, she could use this. The magical, benevolent mare who blesses others with the ability to fly. Who wouldn't want to hear that song? Or sing it?

Leilani smiled at the little rainbow mare. She'd never quite seen something like her and truly it fascinated her, but then as a healer she needed to learn as much as she could about the world so if needed she could heal it. When the little mare stated her name she sounded almost afraid and that bothered Leilani a little bit. She cocked her head and raised it slightly away wondering if it was her size that bothered the little ocean mare. With a sudden idea in her head she laid down on the ground with her hooves tucked under her and said, "My name is Leilani, its a pleasure to meet you Ilyrana." She listened to how the mare asked if she could keep the fallen feather and got a twinkle in her eye, "You are more than welcome to keep it if you like it that much. I have no more need of it now that it's fallen." She was so fascinated by Ilyrana but didn't want to seem rude. She spread her wings out on the sandy beach and let them lay there, the orange feathers catching the light giving them an ethereal shine. It was nice to just relax for a while.

As the mare tucked her legs under herself, Illy smiled, feeling a little better about the scale of things - plus, the mare, Leilani, she would have limited mobility now. Illy's face lit up even more when Leilani said she could have the feather. "Really?" she gasped, pushing it toward the mare, almost onto the sand, but not quite; she didn't want to get sand stuck to it. "Would you mind putting it in my hair? It's beautiful." Illy's tail squinched up in her excitement, curled under her belly and wiggling with delight. "Your name is beautiful, too!" she said, smiling wider. The name was one she'd not heard before, but it fit the mare perfectly. Elegant, just like its owner.

It had definitely been the size of her that had bothered the little mare. Leilani was so glad she had decided to lay down. Besides she was just as fascinated by the little seathi and wouldn't want to leave anytime soon anyway. "Of course I'd be happy to put it in your hair." She'd never seen someone so fascinated by a feather before, it was cute. Reaching forward she plucked the feather delicately with her lips from the salty water and tucked it gently behind Illy's ear so that it was displayed nicely but also so it wouldn't fall out. After she was done she pulled her head back and said, "Well thank you Ilyrana! I think your name is quite beautiful and very exotic sounding." She had hoped the flatter the little seathi but also hoped she wasn't insulting her. She looked about herself at the beautiful colors. She'd never been to the seashore before. Her eyes sparkled with childlike delight.

Illy veritably wiggled with excitement as the mare leaned down to tuck the feather behind her ear, but then told herself to hold still - she didn't want it to fall out and back into the water, after all. "Thank you," she said, both for the feather and for the compliment. Part of her was sad because she couldn't quite see the feather anymore - it was just a blur of orange on the edge of her vision - but the rest of her was so happy Leilani had let her keep it. She'd have to figure out a way to keep it safe; she didn't think it would do very well under the surface. "My mom told me that my name means 'opal.'" Where Amitola had come up with that, Ilyrana had no clue, but she loved her name. It rolled off the tongue, even if it was a little bit of a tongue twister. "Do you know if yours means something?" she asked, and then a thought struck her. Leilani was acting rather odd for a big soquili - every one that Ilyrana had met so far had been bewildered to the point of incoherence when they'd met her. None had ever seen seathi before.
Tilting her head to the side to study Leilani a little bit, Illy asked, "Have you met my kind before?"

"Opal... It fits you! The rainbow colors on your body remind me of the opal stone. It shines with all the colors of the rainbow." She smiled at Illy, "Your mother definitely knew the perfect name for you." The question almost caught her off guard, "My mother once told me that my name means 'heavenly flowers'. I think that was why she gave me so many flowers for my mane." Her smile turned a little sorrowful thinking of her mother but she hid it quickly. No need to bring sorrow into a new friendship.
When Illy asked the question about meeting her kind well there was no real way to put it but simply, "No actually. You are the first I've met. Does your kind have a species name?" She hoped she didn't sound too clinical, but this was the only way to explain it. Cocking her head she waited the tiny mares answer.
