Name: Zarike Age: 20 (Month Eight, Turn 185) Gender: Male Rank: Sr. Weyrling
Appearance: Zarike already bears the broad shoulders and long limbs of a man born for an active lifestyle. Candidacy has filled him out quite a bit from the scrawny youth he had been. His light brown hair, blue eyes and fair skin are fairly typical of the area, though he has a habit of letting himself get sunburns from spending too much time outdoors no matter what the weather. He's a little self-consious about how he looks, not in a defensive way, but he's definitely attentive to how he appears to potential romantic interests. He bathes quite often do to an uncanny ability to find the best ways of getting dirty during any task he's set.
Personality: Zarike's fearless, nothing intimidates this young man. You can't bully or threaten him into doing what you want. Instead kindness is the best route to take. Be kind to him and he'll return the favor, be cruel and watch out. Zarike doesn't tolerate bullies no matter how big. He has a noble heart and will always stand up for the little guy, the underdog, even if he himself is no match for his opponent. He believes the world should be fair to everyone.
Zarike will try to talk two parties of a problem more often than not but if people don't get his point quick enough for his tastes he will resort to violence in defense of who he sees as the victim, uncaring of the odds. From a young age he was not at all hesitant about adopting the dragonrider's tradition of Dueling. He tries to wait for his opponent to make the first 'move' but his definition of that can be hazy once he gets riled up. In the end, the scraps are short lived, whether he wins or loses, and he'll almost always forgive the other party once they catch their breath.
As he aged and progressed through his candidacy, he worked on his ability to use words first over fists. He's less prone to breaking out into a fight now, though it does still happen.
Zarike has a thirst for knowledge, he loves to learn about almost any topic. He likes watching crafters at their work and helping if he's allowed. If not he'll ask questions for as long as his subject holds his attention. Which sometimes isn't long unfortunately. He tends to jump from subject to subject, unable to focus on just one at a time. More often than not in the end what he learns amounts to little more than 'trivia'.
Zarike hates being kept waiting. Things should happen Now, not Later. He'll get frustrated and even angry fairly quick when something doesn't happen fast enough for him. Zarike will dive headlong into something recklessly rather than wait for a solid plan or more information. Sitting still and quiet is hard if he's not being entertained by something.
He's not afraid to talk to anyone be they human, dragon, wher, or even the Weyrleader's and Lord Holder's themselves. Some might find it annoying or other's amusing, but he's very earnest and serious when doing so.
He wants to trust others, to believe that everyone's a good person but he's coming to accept that sometimes it's just not possible. For his safety and for that of those he loves, he can't just blindly put his faith in strangers hands. It hasn't stopped him from getting into trouble, finding at times that someone has taken advantage of him yet again.

Their Story Raised in the creche, Zarike was a relatively normal youth. He had the normal friends, got into the normal amount of trouble, had average health growing up. Really, nothing much stood out about him until he was taught to read and write. He took to words like dragons to air (with some 'crashing' in the way of bad poetry for a turn or two during his early candidacy). It didn't take him long before he was making friends with various crafters and weyrfolk just to coax them into stories and to hear them discuss their crafts. He enjoyed legends and ballads well enough but it was factual history and technical information that really interested him. Zarike would learn something knew, then go to his friends and try to explain it too them, even if it was beyond their learning level or if he barely understood it himself. If he hadn't been a weyrbrat destined for candidacy, he would have done everything in his power to get a harper apprenticeship. He may have been around 7 or so when the dragon plague struck. Kept sheltered in the creche as he was, he didn't see much of the sickness or death first hand, but he remembers the sound. The cries and keens of the dying, as well as the near constant keening that marked each passing. The overwhelming miasma of sadness and fear in the weyr definitely left it's mark on the young child. He developed a strong desire to protect and comfort everyone he could. In particular, he wanted to protect the younger children. The toddlers who couldn't understand exactly what was happening around him. He himself barely understood the abstract concept of death at the time, though he learned at a very young age. Despite his desire for knowledge he became a dragon candidate once he came of age because that was what was expected. Not that he was going to complain! Not about the opportunity at least. As a rider, he would be able to indulge in that need to protect on a much broader scale. You can be sure there was plenty of good natured complaints about the hours, the intensity, and the possibility of the candidatemaster's assistants being the spawn of a tunnelsnake or a wher depending upon the day. Venk gets's a pass.. Hiraeth and all. Zarike's penchant for fighting certainly got him into trouble on and off growing up. He would defend his actions, but apologize and show honest remorse if someone got injured in the process. Zarike rarely argued his inevitable punishments, though often his superiors would find them completed in a rushed manner. He eventually squired to Four-two. He'd been hoping for first wing, or at least second but his penchant for trouble made him a less than desirable target for either of those. He accepted his squiring at first as just another 'punishment' but it didn't take long before Zarike felt himself at home and enjoying the tasks set to him by his squiremaster. Even if it wasn't his first choice of wing, he gave his best efforts to the wing. He still held out just the smallest whisper of hope that maybe, his efforts here would be noticed by first or second wing once he Impressed.

Quote: Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cottontail, who were good little bunnies, went down the lane to gather blackberries: But Peter, who was very naughty, ran straight away to Mr. McGregor's garden, and squeezed under the gate! Inspiration:
Peter Rabbit is a fictional anthropomorphic character in various children's stories by Beatrix Potter. He first appeared in The Tale of Peter Rabbit in 1902, and subsequently in five more books between 1904 and 1912. Spinoff merchandise includes dishes, wallpaper, and dolls. He appears as a character in a number of adaptations.
Peter Rabbit made his first appearance in 1902 in The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Peter disobeys his mother's orders and sneaks into Mr. McGregor's garden, eating as many vegetables as he can before Mr. McGregor spots him and chases him about. Peter manages to escape, but not before losing his jacket and shoes, which Mr. McGregor uses to dress a scarecrow. Peter returns home weary and ill and is put to bed with a dose of chamomile tea.
Beatrix Potter (born Helen Beatrix Potter; 28 July 1866 – 22 December 1943) was an English author, illustrator, natural scientist and conservationist best known for her imaginative children's books, featuring animals such as those in The Tale of Peter Rabbit, which celebrated the British landscape and country life. Potter was also a prize-winning breeder of Herdwick sheep and a prosperous farmer keenly interested in land preservation. She continued to write, illustrate and design spin-off merchandise based on her children's books for Warne until the duties of land management and her diminishing eyesight made it difficult to continue. Potter published over 23 books: the best known are those written between 1902 and 1922.
Name: Peth
Feel of Voice: A sparkle of sunlight on copper, the warmth of the sun on your skin, a giggle from just out of sight.
Personality:
Peth is an adventurous creature - he’s ready to get into any scrape, hole, or danger. Buried treasure? He’s on it! Secret caves? LET’S GO. This lithe brown thrives on chaos and danger: restraining him from getting into anything is a constant challenge. He refuses to let his condition hold him back, and will stomp all over anyone else who tries to hold him back… even if it’s for the very best of reasons. Though he may be persuaded to hold back on the grounds of the safety of others, those around him will quickly learn that bringing up his condition as a reason he can’t do something will only make him more determined to make it work. Though it’s impossible to find work-arounds for everything - Peth and his rider will almost certainly never be able to take active duty - he will definitely do his best.
The brown is smart - well, fairly smart. Smart enough to get himself into a great deal of trouble, and usually smart enough to get himself out of it. He will, naturally, drag his rider straight in with him… and if anyone was ever an archetypal fit for the statement that ‘curiosity killed the cat’, then it was Peth. He’s curious, he needs to know, and he needs to know now - and he’s not above manipulation or pranks to try and get that information out of people. In fact, he’s not above pranks, full stop. The sound of something really beautifully pulled off is a delight to Peth’s ears, and he will spend a lot of time working out how to set things up perfectly, even relying on his rider to do a lot of the remembering. Even when people are used to his more manipulative tendencies, he’ll play off of them to get what he wants - that’s just the sort of dragon he is.
He’s also more then a little disobedient, respecting no natural authority beyond his rider. He’ll never be a fighter? His rider will never be a full rider? Why should he respect another’s authority, then? What good will it ever bring them? It will take a combination of bribery and sheer good leadership to command Peth, though the right pair may be able to inspire loyalty… as opposed to obedience.
That said, Peth is greedy. He wants things - glittery things? People? Friends? Power? More dinner? It doesn’t matter. He’s happy to go to whatever lengths are necessary to have more then anyone else has. If there was ever a dragon who would demand to actually sleep on a pile of gold, it would be Peth. He will never be entirely satisfied with what he has - and perhaps this is his fatal flaw: always wanting more, and struggling to get it.
Positive: Adventurous, smart, curious Negative: Mischievous, disobedient, greedy
Appearance: A handsome mid-sized brown, he has good conformation and is possibly disgustingly healthy - it'll be rare for him to come down with any sort of cold. His hide is a warm brown, though marked with lighter and darker splatters like someone has spilt klah over him - indeed, there are a couple of circles that almost look like mug rings! He isn't exceedingly muscular, and if not strictly monitored by his rider will become fat: as he will never be permitted to fly thread or to be out in the field (and indeed, even flying may be dangerous unchaperoned), it'll be a challenge to get this brown all the exercise he needs. A smart rider might suggest swimming...
Notes: Peth is subject to fits not unlike the epileptic seizures found in humans. What triggers them is hard to say (it might be flashing light, being particularly stressed or his rider drinking), and they will grow less common (but possibly no less distressing) as he grows older. During them he will lose consciousness and will be unable to control the movements of his limbs - restraining him will prove more dangerous then simply making the area safe for him. Afterwards, he may be a little confused and tired, but this will probably not last longer then a few minutes.
Peth and his rider will likely never be permitted to be field agents.
Why me?: Peth and Zarike share a lot of tastes - they have the same insatiable curiosity, and it’s inevitable that the two of them will end up in some serious trouble at one point or another. Peth chose Zarike in the hope that he would fulfil his curiosity… and help him in his pranks. Peth is a little more patient then his rider, and though being a dragon he’s not blessed with a particularly long memory, he’ll employ all his wiles to get Zarike along with his latest scheme.
On the other claw, Zarike offers what Peth desperately needs - a sense of justice and kindness which is sometimes lacking in the brown. Zarike will be able to point Peth in the right direction, and curb the wort of his greedy excesses.
