x ᴠᴀʀɪᴀɴ soared high above the Greater Herd Plains just outside of Avandere Castle, a smile on his lips. Gods, it was good to be home. He and Azreth had traveled the Lands Below for the better part of a year, searching for something neither of them could name. But, odd thing is, they found it; hope. For the Subjects, for the Azrein, and for the Isle.

And now they had returned finally after a long exodus, and Varian's first stop after dropping his Chosen off at the castle was coming to the east side of the Castle in the sheltered woods next to an open field where his beloved Lifemate lived. He pulled his wings in with an audible snap! and pressed them tightly to his flanks, free-falling some two-hundred feet from the skies at high speeds. As he rocketed over the plain, he saw the forms of Azrein and let out a loud whinny of greeting before snapping his wings open and backwinging hard just before he crashed into the line of trees. He set down gentle on his back hooves, the bells on his antlers chiming pleasantly, and tossed his head, his heart in his throat with anticipation.

"Little Sparrow, are you home?" He peeked between the trunks of the trees and saw a flash of white; his beloved or another Azrein? Regardless, he heard hoofbeats coming from behind him, and he knew the Azrein he saw on his way over were coming to greet him. He felt his heart swell; he had missed this place -- his beloved, his friends, every Azrein of the Greater Herd he was connected to by the Web in his mind that he and Azreth shared -- all of it.

It was wonderful to be home again.

Sitar perked her ears at the voice that was far to close for her liking. She was patrolling to make sure things were safe for Avari and her blankets. Sitar looked over her shoulder to where Avari lay in the thicket with her blankets. She walked through the trees cutting off the white Varian had seen and presenting her own black pelt. She narrowed her eyes a little but then remembered Varian from the description Avari had given her and the colors of the foals that peeked out of the blankets.

"My my we just met and you are already calling me sparrow?" Sitar giggled and approached the stallion. "It is Avari you seek yes? Are you Varian?" If he was she would take him to her if not she would make sure he went another way.

A soft flump sounded from behind as a fair posterior met the ground. Were Varian to turn, or Sitar to peer around him, they would find an awkwardly perched, very purple Azrein with unusual 'accessories' to her figure. Broad, rodential ears and a long stringy tail that entertained but little fur, holding in i'ts coil a half-eaten cookie, which the Azrein seemed all too happy to fix, forcing the cookie to complete disappearance.

The tail suffered a brief cleaning before dipping into the neck satchel to retrieve another, seeming to offer an endless supply of the treats. Soft red eyes peered curiously out from under dark violet curls light enough to flutter in the breeze despite their length. She started to bite into another cookie, but stopped, staring at the targets of her concentration, then offered them the treat in her tail. "Want one?"

Long had it been since she'd felt the stirring of her lifebond feel so near. Resting within a wide thicket, Avari carefully rose from between her blankets and peered through the tree-line, her ears up and alert as she felt a sense of excitement build up inside her small frame. After all this time she'd felt sure he wouldn't be home for many, many more years, so when the distant sound of a whinny barely touched her senses she let out a soft laugh. Then when the chiming of bells filled the forest, she almost ran off through the trees to go find his location. That is she would have if it wasn't for a gently bump into her leg that reminded her of other responsibilities. Brows pulling together as she pondered a solution to her current predicament, the young unicorn's attention was drawn away from their search for Varian when a black Azrein moved away in the direction she'd been looking. So Sitar had noticed too? Humming a single lightly in thought as she leaned down to nose the faded purple-cream blanket of one of the foals. Avari weighed the possibily of harm coming to them so far in for a moment before she flicked her gaze to the green of the thicket around her a smiled. "Stay here, I'll be right back with a surprise." She whispered to the little one with a nuzzle as a familiar voice called and she quickly (and carefully) moved from the crowd of them and out of the shelter of the thicket to find him. Well, not without one look back to make sure they were safely surrounded from outside view.

Normal cautious travel through her home forgotten, she felt another quiet laugh ring from her small frame as her bright eyes caught sight of bright wings through the trees, and again when the words of her new friend reached her. Shaking her head, she pondered playing a trick on her returning mate in her bright spirits before deciding against such childish actions. (Especially in front of another) So with a flick of her tail, she moved from the cover of the trees and approached. "Yes Sitar, that is Varian." Her voice rose so it'd pass the distance between them. "It'd be hard to recognize him as anything but with how bright he is." She teased lightly as she moved past the dark mare to his side. Glancing up at him a moment, she flashed him a smile and another soft laugh before pressing her nose lightly into his neck. A part of her wanted to prance around him like a silly filly and whinny her rising joy like a fool but she held herself back and simply buried her face into the long fur of his neck and sigh a private, "Welcome home, love." to him. Enraptured in his return, she'd almost missed the strange new Azrein in their midst completely until the snap of something bitten in half had her pulling away from him to glance back at Sitar and then onto another. Ears flicking back she gave a brief flick of her head at the offer and tilted her head. She looked so odd.. Eyes returning to Sitar for a moment, she wondered if she knew the other was there when she was patrolling, and if she would accept the cookie.

Conri had been walking in the grass, simply enjoying the wonderful day. He had passed quite a few azrein who were also enjoying the lovely day when he heard a snap in the sky. He turned his gaze upwards in time to hear a loud whinny and saw just who was flying high above them. "Can it be? Could it really be him?" he said out loud as he picked up his pace to ease his curiosity. As the large winged azrein landed gracefully near the end of the clearing Conri saw with his own eyes that Varian was back. As he picked up his pace to greet the newly returned azrien another came into view. He heard voices, though could not make out their conversation. While the black mare and Varian were talking another Azrein showed up behind the two, who seemed completely oblivious to her arrival, and began to eat.

He was sure that Varian would draw a crowd but was determined to welcome the stallion back before the crowd got too big and excited. As he neared the three yet another appeared, a white Azrein which he knew to be Avari. He was also privy to information that stated that she had quite the herd of blankets to look after too. He watched Avari notice the purple mare and laughed quietly to himself as he watched the strange azrein offer a cookie to the group. "Good day Avari" he said and bowed "Welcome back Varian, it is a pleasure to see you return so soon" he added before standing upright again. Conri was pleased to see Varian back, only good things could come of this!

A large wingspan churned the cool air and a loud thump in the distance heralded hooves kissing the land once again. D'reighton had seen the others. He was far from where he had once lived in more ways then one. He never understood his siblings need for cruelty and evil though he had gone along with it under the evil eye of his own mother. She was as scary as scary got and she ruled her four sons with an iron tail..but not him any longer. His heart called to his father, was true to his father's type and that meant he was here to seek a new cleaner life, one that his heart could be happy with.

He knew he was not exactly the most normal looking azrein but unlike his father he felt less worry for his appearance, he was what he was fierce and deadly but for those who looked closer he had a heart of gold when he was allowed to do what he wanted and not what his psychotic mother dictated. He pricked his ears to the others, but was hesitant to approach. The little white looked a bit shy and he would not scare her if he could at all help it. He was here to join them not to scare the living daylights out of others.

xᴛʜᴇ sᴛᴀʟʟɪᴏɴ snorted warily at the mottled black Azrein that appeared from between the trees, his long ears swiveling backwards, though he didn't lower his head and brandish his antlers as was his first instinct. The Lands Below were not kind to Azrein and their Chosen. He sized her up with a single, quick glance from hoof to snout, and judged she wasn't a threat. At this point in time, anyway. When she spoke, he tilted his head to the side; Avari had sent this mare out in her stead? Why?

"I am Varian, High Deity of Duty and Sacrifice, Son of Valdien, Protector of the Greater Herd, and Bonded to King Azreth Kestrel De'servian, First of His Name" Though most would speak these titles boastfully, there was nothing save humility in the stallion's manner as he extended his foreleg and tucked his chin to his chest, offering the mare a low bow. "And yes, I seek my Lifemate, Avari. Is she alright?" He craned his neck and glanced behind the unknown mare, sapphire gaze searching for his beloved. "Is she hurt?" He opened his mouth to continue barraging the mare with questions when an odd Azrein interrupted them and offered them each a cookie.

Varian blinked, taken aback for a moment -- something nigh impossible to do to him -- before smiling at the purple, rodent-like mare. "No, but thank you. I imagine you heard my introduction to this mare here; who might you be, my lady?" Though his attention was now on the purple mare, his ears were turned towards the black Azrein; he wanted nothing more than to charge into the forest, trumpeting out his love for his Lifemate. But, that would be rather rude, so he forced himself to be patient, even though it ruffled his feathers.

And then he heard it; the soft footfalls of hoof against ground, chiming gently like the clearest, sweetest bells. Oh, he knew those steps. Throwing dignity to the wind, Varian let out a whinny of pure, unadulterated happiness at seeing the small form of his beloved, and when she came over to him and pressed her nose into his neck, it took every ounce of willpower he had not to cry. "Oh, Little Sparrow." He extended his wings and wrapped them around the little mare, enfolding the two completely in a cocoon of warmth and love, laughter and light. He held her tightly, pulling her in close so she was pressed against his side, his neck draped over hers in the strongest embrace he could give her. "Gods, how I have missed you, Avari."

While they were still wrapped within his large wings, Varian allowed his tears to run unchecked down his cheek, reveling in the presence of his Lifemate's bright, pure soul and the warmth of her beside him. Her smile, her laughter; there was nothing in the realm of the living or even the realm of Gods that could even come close in comparison, and he cherished those small, sweet gifts she gave him. He nuzzled her neck and let out a long breath, smiling down at her as he pulled his wings back to his sides, discreetly brushing the tears from his cheeks in the same motion with his primaries.

The High Deity sighed in contentment, a pleased smile on his mouth; he couldn't have asked for a better homecoming. He kept just the very tip of a wing atop Avari's shoulders, as if he couldn't bear the thought of not touching her, assuring him they were finally together again. As he was about to speak, a voice he hadn't heard in nearly a year came to him, and the stallion laughed with joy and half-reared, his fore hooves coming a foot of the ground as he pivoted gracefully on his hind legs, turning to face the dusky blue stallion. "Conri!" Varian touched his nose to the Azrein's jaw in greeting. "Well met, my friend. Thank you; I'm quite relieved to be back home."

Varian half-turned as he caught movement out of the corner of his eye; a dark winged stallion, one whom he hadn't seen before. He tossed his head in the Azrein's direction, letting him know he could approach if he wished, though with a small turn of his head, Varian's antlers tilted towards the male, wordlessly warning him not to cause trouble. Sadly, he had to be wary of each and every Azrein he didn't know, but that didn't mean he had to be outright offensive. He would give everyone a chance, no matter their looks or where they were from; if they proved themselves to not be a danger to the Greater Herd, then they were more than welcome.

The stallion motioned with a wing for Conri to join the half-circle of Azrein as he turned back to the group, standing so closely to Avari that he had to drape a wing over her back, for fear of it being crushed between their flanks."So, everyone, please, tell me. What's been happening on the Isle in my absence? How is everyone? Anything new going on that I need know about?" Business first, then pleasure. After all, it was his duty as Protector of the Greater Herd to know all there was to know about the Azrein of the Isle.

Sitar seemed to keep calm but her little cat ears twitched knowing he was sizing her up. She raised a brow at the introduction how interesting things were getting she would get merits for this some how in the end. A threat right now probably not could she be maybe. She gave a small bow in return. "I am Sitar just Sitar no one special but a friend to your lifemate I am. No not hurt she is fine, but as her friend I protect her while she protects and cares for your children." She smiled sweetly before pinning her ears back at the strange one that offered them cookies. He eyes kept her in sight and she growled a little not fully trusting the rodent like mare. She took a step to the side to allow Avari to her mate but seemed to be keeping a close eye on everyone arriving. "Forgive me for not knowing right away Avari you know I am just being wary is all." She said with a sweet voice. She pinned her ears back seeing more arriving she was glad she wasnt more well known for once. She seemed to back out of the circle a bit. Groups were not always her thing she looked to where the foals were safely hidden before moving to stand near yet behind Avari her gaze seeming to keep on the foals yet not directly on them. Sitar looked to Varian when he spoke again but she turned her head away once more she didn't have anything she could tell him and that which she could she would leave for her friend and Varian's mate Avari to say.

Feeling somewhat... Ignored, the ratpony shrugged, and tossed the iced gingersnap into her maw to crunch loudly on it. It seemed to leave her emblissed, until she choked on words that should have given Varian first excuse for it. "What? Li'l 'uns?" she gasped out around her cookie, then forced herself to her feet and choked down the cookie, all but prancing. "I wanna see, I wanna see!"

Enfolded in great wings so suddenly, Avari blinked in surprise, her eyes turning from where Sitar once was to tightly closed when she found herself buried in his attentions. Smiling brightly as her small frame shook with both her laughter and joy as she stood tucked beneath his strong grip, her own cheek running lovingly through his fur. "And I you." Twisting in his grip so she could look at him the mare quickly leaned up so she could nose the tears from his cheeks lightly. This was a time of joy, and tears, even happy ones were unwelcome. "Next time you're not allowed to leave for so long." She scolded lightly her eyes catching his for a moment before he moved to release her from their small, brief sanctuary. So when the daylight shone fully down on them once more she lingered a moment against his side before stepping away. It felt like the perfect day to her in this moment, yet as the voice of yet another stranger spoke out to them she felt her brows pull together. Skipping away a step when Varian suddenly reared up and turned with a solid thud of hooves hitting the ground, Avari turned to glance over at the blue Azrein who called her by name. "Hello?" Her voice was soft and curious before she made her way a few steps closer to the friend she'd managed to make. "Nothing to forgive, I thank your wariness." The mare finally got to answer before her own gaze followed the other's to where her family lay hidden. It was suddenly in that moment that she realized just how close this bunch was to her new lives. Ears flicking back, she shifted uneasily on her hooves but remained silent. After all, she'd rather they go completely unnoticed for the time being then reveal where they lay to the gathering by moving any closer. At least she could thank the Great Mother that they were sleeping soundly.

Drawing in a deep breath to steady her slowly unnerving senses, she lowered her voice. "You'd help me keep them safe if it came down to it, right my friend?" Yes she had her Varian back to help in such events, but she couldn't be wary enough in this situation. So when her life-mate turned his attention back to everyone she left the question open-ended as she moved forward to return to his side. Yet even-so she kept watch of Sitar's general location incase anything should happen. She wouldn't be like her mother in that case, she'd put her own life on the line for her offspring. Offering him a smile at his inquiry as to the state of the isle, the mare gave a gentle shrug of her shoulders as she looked up at him. "All has been very quiet in our neck of the woods Varian." Nodding once, she shifted to lean against him. It was only whens she was relaxed up against him that her eyes caught sight of the other winged Azrein residing outside of the little gathering. Tipping her head at the features she was able to depict of him, she soon looked away confused. She'd never seen a bat-winged Azrein before. It was comfortable for once, being in a large group of friends. (Or what she assumed was friends to Varian) So when the rat-tailed Azrein chimed in on lil 'uns and wanting to see them, Avari froze so suddenly. "Little ones?" She questioned, trying desperately to feign innocent and failing as slight panic caused her tone to be clipped. She wasn't sure how comfortable she was with that idea.

xVᴀʀɪᴀɴ immediately turned back towards Sitar, his entire body tense, muscles shaking, certain he had misheard her.

"M-My children?" The Deity glanced down at Avari, who shifted her weight uneasily, eyes on something beyond the forests' edge. Sweet Gods! The stallion whipped around to face the purple mare at her cry of 'I wanna see!', his head reeling. Avari's sweet voice spoke then, feigning ignorance, though Varian knew she was lying through her teeth. The stallion took a step backwards, closing his eyes and shaking his head, the bells on his antlers ringing discordantly. "Sparrow, you were pregnant?"

Without waiting for a reply, Varian closed his blue eyes and brought his mental walls crashing down, flinging out his senses far and wide, opening himself to the Web within his mind. Was it...? Yes, there! Five little bundles, with his and Avari's blood racing through their tiny bodies nestled in the hollow of an ancient oak tree. The stallion reared up high onto his hind legs, opening his wings with a snap as he pawed at the air beneath his hooves, letting out a loud trumpet of joy. And every Azrein on the Isle heard it, felt it, deep within their hearts as his emotions cascaded from him in a tumultuous rush with his walls completely down; elation, pride, wonder, far too many to name. All these and more shot out from him like a strike of lightening, down and out through each and every strand of the giant Web within his mind that connected him and his Chosen to every Azrein on the Isle. In the back of his mind, he knew his Chosen shot up out of bed and let out a whoop of joy for his Bonded, but Varian pushed that link away, instead focusing on the five tiny threads spanning between him and Avari in his mind.

The stallion graced his Lifemate with such a glorious smile as he came to the pinnacle of his rear. And with a powerful downward beat of his wings, Varian lunged forward and hit the ground at a flat-out gallop, dodging trees and leaping fallen logs or rocks effortlessly as he sprinted towards his children through the woods. He heard the thunder of hooves behind him and knew that Avari followed, if not others, but he outpaced them all easily -- he was, after all, the Protector of the Greater Herd -- in his headlong flight. When he was several yards away he spread his wings and tucked his hindquarters, skidding to a stop.

And there, right in front of him, lay five small bundles, a mess of tangled limbs and wings and horns and antlers beneath their blankets, fast asleep. Nostrils flaring, he lowered his head, eyes wide, the bells on his antlers chiming almost inaudibly at the motion. But he neither woke nor touched them; he wanted to wait for Avari before he met his offspring for the very first time. So the stallion stepped lightly and pivoted, facing the direction he had come from and standing over the foals, head lowered with his antlers angled outwards. No one but his Lifemate would come near these precious, glorious, wondrous little souls until he knew they posed no threat. He remained a silent, motionless sentinel, standing over his children, until Avari and the others arrived beneath the boughs of the ancient oak tree.

D'rei's head rang and if he were honest with himself he felt a bit sick. No emotion like that had ever blazed through him. No such joy or exuberance. What an odd somewhat scary feeling. He had raised his head to watch the others and nodded back at the antlered stallion. But as the stag like male rushed away he thought he would stay here for a little longer until all the fuss was over and after that crash of emotion, he thought he had been right not to get too close.

They would be back or someone who was late would find him here waiting patiently. He had to talk to someone about his intentions eventually. He wanted an alignment change to neutral or good he didn't much care but he was no longer comfortable with his old family. If his true mate happened to be evil, fine, but he was not.

Such a pretty little gathering, or so her gut had told her. Away her wings went fluttering on the breeze to where a familiar yet odd Azrein stood. ( That purple dragon thing...It was the most interesting of the bunch.) His stature was that of a great beast, with wings that reminded her of the slumbering fire spitters in the higher mountains. Avalon simply ignored that detail, and trotted up to stand beside the draconic stallion.

Her ears were centered on the gathering below. Such interesting were the King's stock, no doubt. They rallied around this god figure, blindly she thought. A snort left her nostrils as she bared her fanged teeth in a grin as wide as it was unsettling. "They amuse me." she did say as her gaze and eyes fell to the blue stallion beside her. "Do they think it is over yet? No, perhaps they do not. They are not the most intelligent of the stock...We hope. "

Trouble wasn't something that she wanted to cause just quite yet. Going after such young things, or old things, just never was her style nor her thing. A more of an observer was she, the silly Faery horse with wings.

Really, she was lucky she woke up the same size today. Otherwise it would have been fun trying to talk to anyone at all.

"Whoops..." Sitar said looking to Avari. She didn't know how long Varian had been gone or that he didn't know about her being pregnant. She shot a look to Avari worried she had blown something. She shook at the feeling that Varian put out being close enough to catch it and she made a face she didnt seem to like it much.

Between this and Varian taking off Sitar managed to answer Avari's question. "I will keep them safe my friend. I will lay down my life for my friend and her children." Sitar didn't lie that was one thing about her. If she said she would protect them she would. She then turned on the ratpony. "We just met you and know not even your name. You in my mind are not trustworthy enough." He growled and then watch Varian run off. Damn the male he was going to give their location away. Which was all well and fine while he was still there but after she and Avari had to protect right? Least thats what she assumed. She took off after him but did not enter she figured that Avari and Varian might want some privacy to introduce the father to his foals. But she stopped and pinned her ears back at least warning people for now to keep their distance until she was told otherwise by Avari.

Ears tight against her head, Avari tucked her chin down as Varian spoke out about the foals, and couldn't help the laugh that left her when the memory of her and Varian's return from the mountains crossed her mind. After all, he had been the one to pass the news along after he'd seen his vision, he'd told her before she could even feel any sign of them. "Varian, you-" Shaking her head as a torrent of emotions washed over her already racing mind, Avari turned to look at Sitar for some kind of help. Catching her own gaze but unable to answer her in thanks before her mate once again reared and took her attention.. This time a sense of pride (his, she assumed) filled her small being as she caught the bright smile that shown her way. Offering him one in return she opened her mouth to explain when he suddenly took off in the very direction she'd left her hidden family. "W-wait, Varian!" Dancing back a step as she called out to him, Avari threw a quick glance in the general direction of the gathering before a hopeless sound left her and she took off after her mate quick as her hooves would carry. This wasn't how she wanted them introduced, what if he scared them? Heart racing as she spied the bright form of her mate, the mare fell to a trot and eventually a careful walk as she watched him amongst her-or should she say their?-foals. Shaking her mane, she let out a huff as her heart raced. This wasn't good, not at all.

"You need to be careful!" She scolded him for the second time today, this time all playfulness gone as she moved up to his side and leaned down to nose the nearest foal lightly before turning to face him fully. "This place was supposed to be a secret, what if.. I.." Frowning, she curled her tail lightly as her mind shot off in all kinds of directions jumbling her thoughts too much. It was only when she caught sight of Sitar out of the corner of her eyes that she let out a sigh and closed them for a moment. "I'm sorry, I was going to introduce you, just." Turning to look down at them so content in the protection of their home, flinching as she imagined what happened to her all those years ago on her own children. They'd have to move, and at that she allowed herself a small smile, Great Mother above, that would not be an easy task. Offering him that same smile she tipped her head back in the direction they came. "Just when there were less Azrein about." Stepping closer to the group of them, she carefully moved her way through them to stand in the back of the oak placing them between her and him before looking down at the blankets lovingly. "You're not upset with me, are you?"
