She hadn't been naive enough to think that her very first mission would be a complete success. But Kylee had certainly believed that it wouldn't go too poorly, especially with the company of more experienced hunters with them.
Boy, oh boy, had she been proved completely wrong. It wasn't absolute disaster, she supposed, considering that they didn't get digested by the titan in the end, but she had then been knocked out entirely by the smoldering heat that overtook all that had stayed.
And then she had awoken, and known firsthand what it was like to be burned to a crisp.
She was exaggerating, of course, since she was healing along quite well, and managed to maneuver herself around on her own two feet, though her arms were still wrapped with bandages.
Another consequence was that part of her hair had been burned off too; a few inches of her ponytail were gone. She had been so bored of resting that she decided that the next course of action was to trim off the burned ends of her hair. And so, Kylee had politely asked to borrow a pair of scissors, and sat on the edge of her bed to begin her task.

Lex was incredibly glad he'd skipped out of what he initially thought was some stupid potato peeling mission, but ended up being a massive disaster that led to a ton of patients in the infirmary. So, it was normal Friday on Deus Ex.
He'd slammed down at least ten shots of espresso this shift, and gone through more than two boxes of surgeon's plastic gloves. His clipboard was shaking but free from coffee stains, a wide eyed stare boring holes into the pages of patient information.
Next on the list was... Chang, Kylee. He'd never seen her in the infirmary, which meant she was new. Hopefully she wasn't too traumatized from her first mission,or he'd have to play therapist and doctor - which wasn't something he was opposed to, but in a slam like this? Nope. Nu-uh. Not happening.
He rapped on the railing that held a curtain keeping her privacy, clearing his throat. "Ms. Chang? My name is Alexei, and I'm here to treat any wounds that have reopened and redo your bandaging. Need any assistance?" He drawled in the most professional voice he could muster, peeking his head in and noticing the scissors.
"Uh, Ms. Chang? A word of advice; drastic physical change isn't necessarily recommended after your first mission - you should come down from any short-term depression or anxiety after a few days." He tapped the pen on the metal head of the clipboard, an amused smile playing across his face. "If it doesn't then well schedule you an appointment with a counselor."

It was a good thing she hadn't quite begun yet.
For Kylee hadn't been expecting any interruptions save for the voice that lived inside her head and nearly jumped out of her skin when a voice she did not recognize interrupted her. "O-oh!" Eyes widened as she shoved red-framed glasses up on her nose; Kylee wasn't as vain as to continue wearing her contacts while stuck in the infirmary. "Hi! Um, yeah, bandages. Yes."
...Wait, what?
"I'm not depressed." She clarified, furrowing her eyebrows as Akila gave a slight harumph at this accusation. "I mean, not an ideal first mission, yeah, but I'm not going to try and harm myself when I've escaped from the jaws of death, quite literally too, I might add." And to prove it, she lifted up a strand of chestnut brown hair and and pointed at the ends.
"I got some of it burnt off, and I thought it'd be best to, you know, trim the ends off."

"O-oh, not like that, Ms. Chang." Lex blustered, waving the clipboard rather lackadaisically. "I just meant cutting your hair short, or any change that doesn't include self harm. I've no worry about you harming yourself - Hunters tend to be harmed enough during missions." A cheeky smile painted his lips as she set the clipboard down by her cot, gloving up as he continued to chat with the huntress.
"If you need any help with your hair, I can do it for you." He offered casually, pulling bandages out of the first aid box on one of the shelves and beginning to unwind the roll. "And if you'd like to talk about the mission, that's completely fine too. I wasn't there, obviously, so it'd be nice to hear your input on it."

"Oh! Um well, I'm not going to hack it all off, I promise." It was a long time since she had short hair, really; she had once done it in her early teens just to try something new, and well...
Suffice to say that Kylee liked having long hair a long more. Short hair wasn't too bad, but blowing it out was an utter chore.
"Well, I've never really cut my own hair before." Plus, it would be hard if her arms started to ache during the process and she slipped and cut a whole chunk of hair off, right? Of course, Kylee was being too paranoid, but better safe than sorry, right?
Though she had learned that going ton a mission was definitely not a safe option. Not at all. "Well, we were sent to a desert, and there was this huge... titan thing? Is that what it's called? It sucked us all in and then we had to throw grenades up at its teeth to make an escape route." They had thought it was safe then, but...
"And then we were quarantined and then suddenly this... burning sensation overtook us and we fainted." The brunette bit her lip, twisting a strand of her hair around a finger. "Do missions always end up that way?"

A sigh rumbled from his chest as he took the scissors and listened to her talk about the mission. They always ended bad, somehow. Nothing was ever on their side, someone always got hurt, or many people, some of them even died temporarily, some permanently. Death was inevitable, pain was necessary, and missions were hell. "Pretty much, yes. I don't think we've had one mission that went squeaky clean." He grumbled, feathering his fingers through her burnt hair ends. "Not that I would know too much, I never seem to make the missions. I should see it as a boon, but I feel useless half the time." He shrugged, marking her hair with two fingers at the point he'd cut it.
< Quit your whining, whelp. Our time will come. >
<< Sorry, sorry. I'll shut it. >>
Clearing his throat, Lex began to slowly snip away at the burnt ends of her ponytail. "Ah, forgive my rudeness. I've been on for 16 hours, but that's no excuse. You're the one injured, here. Plus, I shouldn't be opening up to someone I hardly know." He said, giving a weak smile she couldn't see. "I'm guessing this burning sensation was an actual fire, judging from what happened to your hair."

"Ah." She said simply, letting out a small sigh. "I'm not sure if I should be relieved or worried that this is quite common around here." Like it or not, this was her life now, and she had to get used to it. It just meant that she had to be more careful when on missions.
Or actively use me. Akila pointed out and Kylee bit her lip at the thought.
She chose to focus on her conversation with Lex at the moment, however. "It's alright. Taking care of all of us mustn't be easy, either."
"Well, yeah, but... I don't think it was a normal fire." Then again, nothing that happened here could ever be classified as normal. "It was blue, and it... well, forced out insects from underneath our skin. I don't even understand how that happened, but..." She repressed a shudder. It was definitely something she would not want to relieve ever again.

Lex shuddered, making a very displeased face like one who had just taken a bite of an apple to find it mealy. "Insects? Sounds like you had a run in with some Famine horsemen." He said with an undertone of disgust. He hard Horsemen, but most especially the Famine clan. The scars in Ami's neck and back were a constant anchor that reminded him to hate.
"Let me guess, it was Caelius that caused this fire?" Again, a displeased tone carried throughout the question. "Ignore him, he thinks we're chess pieces rather than people. Expendable in his view." was he bitter about being thrown from a window? Nope. Not at all.
"It's much easier when a bunch of Life hunters don't get themselves nearly killed." He joked, snipping the last of her burnt ends away with a grin, beginning to attempt layering the ends now. "It's not the worst thing, trust me. I'd rather do check ups and bandage changing than be a lackie..."

"Famine... horsemen?" Kylee still wasn't too familiar with the terms used on Deus and what they all meant. "I just know we got swallowed up by this monster; they call it a titan, I think, which had multiple rows of teeth."
"I..." Honestly, she had blacked out and hadn't really paid too much attention to what exactly had transpired. Now thinking about it, hadn't someone asked Mark to disable the barrier around them? And then tossed something right at him and the last thing they had heard was a beeping noise not unlike that of a ticking time bomb... and then something had exploded--
"...Is this Caelius the guy with black and blue hair? And wears glasses?" The girl grimaced at the thought. She wasn't quite sure if she should be grateful that it had forced out the insects underneath her skin. Was there even a more delicate way to remove them?
Being put on Life taking-care-of-patients duty certainly sounded better than their current state right now. "I guess I've learned not to just rush into missions whenever they message us, huh?"

She hadn't heard of the Horsemen yet? Odd. Lex set down the scissors, done with fixing the singed ends of the trainee's hair, and began to explain. "Horsemen - a type of FEAR creature, much worse than the students the we encounter from time to time. They're an ancient race, bent on killing all of Humanity in the name of an apocalypse. You get the gist - four horsemen of the apocalypse and all." His half smile turned into a small frown whenever he talked about the beasts. He wasn't the type to hold a grudge, yet every time he saw Ami's neck and back...
"So, four horsemen of the apocalypse means four clans, each with a different "specialty." Famine like to use bugs and the like, they're the ones with the lairs in the human world. There's also War, Death, and Conquest." He sat down at a stool by her cot, seeing as the explanation was going to be a little windy, and he anticipated more questions.
"We bombed their homeland in an attempt to be rid of them, yet there were survivors. We've always been fighting them, I've been told." Perhaps, Lex thought, perhaps they were the real demons.

At this, Kylee blinked and sat up straight, looking quite puzzled. Like... Conquest, War, Famine and Death? They were real? She thought privately, and soon berated herself for even doubting such an idea when she knew for a fact that monsters were real. It was just that... the concept of the Four Horsemen had never occurred to her as anything but a myth; they were nothing like vampires and ghosts, after all.
And that they were more dangerous than the students made sense.
"Oh." She breathed, and gray eyes went wide. "We bombed their homeland? Wow..." Kylee wasn't quite sure if she should be sad or grateful... but the thought that someone had lost their home to such a disaster, reminded her somewhat of the bombing of Nagasaki.
"So we're mortal enemies to the very end, huh? Though I suppose it's not exactly accurate to call them mortal... right?"

"You could say so, yes. They're capable of dying, as all FEAR based things are. It is just extremely hard to truly kill them." Lex explained to the best of his ability, still somewhat fuzzy himself on the details of things. He knew they'd killed students and denizens before, but he never really looked into the method. "They are a constant threat to humanity. Ending them is our first priority."
He drummed his fingers along his thigh, tapping the golden ring against his leather wallet. "What did you do before you joined?" He eased into a more casual conversation, smiling again. It always paid to know more of your associates' lives.

Well, that made sense, considering what general lore she had heard about the Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
"I was studying in college." She said with a rueful smile. It was still strange to wake up and realize that her life at college had been replaced with one at the Academy. What had seemed stressful back then; papers, finals, projects... all now seemed rather mundane in comparison to the missions they were sent on here. "Second year, majored in forensic science."

"Ah, university." Lex smiled, leaning back as his grey eyes crinkled with unseen laughter at his college self. Young, stupid, lazing through Life and winning his battles through dumb luck and charm. Those were certainly the days.
"Forensics? No wonder they put you in our division." He chuckled, glad to see that Deus wasn't just full of pick of the draw nobodies who could see special shadows. At least 5 Hunters he knew now would be more than just cannon fodder. "What made you interested in said field?"

Kylee beamed. She certainly was glad she hadn't been placed in the other divisions; Life had seemed perfect once she had understood what she had been sorted into. (She was envisioning this to be somewhat like a Hogwarts sorting, although really, Kylee had no idea exactly how they were delegated to their respective divisions.)
"Well, my dad's a general practitioner and my mom's a paralegal who's helped out in quite a few criminal cases. And I've... well, always been interested in what they do, so it wasn't really that hard when it came to deciding a major."
"And you?" She asked.
