Who: David Nao (Kaurii LeFay), Anita Bishop, Cruz, Tango (ex o ex Snoof)
Where: Durem Recreational Dog Park, a fundraiser hosted by North Durem Animal Clinic
When: Saturday afternoon, early May
Weather: Sunny, mostly clear sky with a spattering of clouds, with an occasional breeze and high humidity.

----------

It was a week ago when a small postcard with a cute arrangement of colored paw prints came in the mail not addressed to Anita, Cruz, or even Minerva, but Tango. "Dear Tango", it said with a cute inky scrawl, "North Durem Animal Clinic invites you and any fur-ends to come to Durem's Recreational Dog Park this weekend for our annual fundraiser event!" It didn't come entirely as a surprise, as in the abruptness of the move from Durem to Gambino they continued to receive notices and news letters from several Durem locations they were previously involved with. This was the first time in years it wasn't just a simple enticement to continue services.

Since she was off that Saturday anyway, and it had been a long time since any of them had been to Durem, on top of Tango having such long gaps between extensive play time with other dogs, Anita arranged to go. Cruz asked to go along, after admiring the adorable postcard for several days. The three took the ferry from Gambino and arrived in Durem a little before one o'clock, all dressed for the weather. Anita kept a simple red tank top, loose cargo pants, and sandal ensemble while Cruz left off his gold trim around his shoulders and tied his hair up high. Tango wore a green and pink floral bandanna over his collar and tags, which jingled excitedly against his leash.

There was a small greeting stand in the expansive park, dogs leashed and unleashed running about the area. Sprinklers, hoses, and kiddy pools were set around in a group, surrounded further by various stands and small kennels; the clinic was providing short check ups, baths, treatments, gifts like gourmet treats, and even had a small fenced area for the adoption of young pups.

Tango was already wagging his tail so hard it felt like it might bruise Anita's shin. She laughed, "Ow, ow, alright, bud, I know."

Cruz's mouth was wide open with a smile, green eyes alight and curious. He'd never seen so many dogs in one place! Anita beckoned him toward her and he gently held onto Tango's leash near her hand. First they had to find the greeting station and figure out what all was available to them and where to go first.

“David, can you get this box and take it to the Woofles Bakery stand?”
“David, can you set these chairs up in the shade?”
“David, can you…”

The eldest Nao was starting to wonder how he got leashed into this fundraiser, on such a beautiful Saturday no less. He remembered being promised an easy going afternoon, handing out flyers and brushing some pooches. However, David was starting to feel like some kind of work horse as his daintier co-workers continually requested his assistance in lifting tables, carrying chairs, moving box after heavy box. The man didn’t mind breaking a sweat but with such fun events going on around him, he felt a little distracted. Luckily, a supervisor seemed to notice the man’s dying motivation and she approached him smiling sweetly. …David felt it was a trap.

“What?” he growled, half playing and half nervous. Despite her alluring features, David knew his boss was no kitten. As she neared, still smiling, the man felt as if he was being engulfed in the shadow of a hungry tigress.

“What’s with the attitude, sour puss? I just noticed you over here breaking a sweat, looking like the Grinch and I thought I could come over and cheer you up. You’re supposed to be smiling! It’s a fundraiser remember?” the woman cooed as she pinched David’s cheek, dodging the man’s swatting palm a moment later. David leaned against the stand’s tower of boxes and wiped his forehead with his forearm, still suspicious.

“Look Nina, I know you’re probably here to have me fetch you a cow or something just as heavy, so spit it out or give me like 10 minutes to cool off. I would have worn lighter clothes if I knew you she-devils were going to make me do all this lifting,” David sighed. Nina’s smile seemed to curl even wider as she opened one of the boxes and tossed David a bottle of water. Wearing light khaki pants and a light heather grey t-shirt, David didn’t seem entirely out of place, though his sweat marks were becoming apparent. He nodded his appreciation upon receiving the bottle before chugging it, Nina circling him like a tiger about to pounce. David’s steel colored eyes followed her, “…What? Just say it.”

“Well, if you’re looking to cool off, I have the perfect new job for you! Liam bailed out on us and so the Puppy Spa needs a new bather,” Nina purred, pointing to a small stand across the way, towards the entrance of the event. David’s eyes had followed her finger and the man furrowed his brow, It’s so goddamn far… but at least it’s not lifting.

“Fine. But do you have an extra pair of clothes? I really don’t want to have to work the rest of the day in soaking pants,” David had finished the water bottle and crushed it with his hand. Nina placed a pondering finger on her cheek before nodding, “Yeah, I think I have some extra volunteer shirts in my car. But the pants… roll’em up for now, but I’ll ask around and see what I can do. If nothing else, just man up.”

David frowned but started heading towards the spa booth anyways, “Just bring them as soon as you can. If I get sick because of you, I’m gonna be pissed.”

Nina waved him goodbye, smiling victoriously. David was just beginning to roll up his sleeves and pants when he spotted a familiar face in the crowd.

Well, well, well…

“It’s been a while,” David laughed. The man snuck right up behind Tango and scratched the dog playfully at the base of his tail, contributing to the already energetic dog’s excitement. “You been watching your weight?” As David’s casual smirk danced across his features and his eyes jumped from Tango’s wagging tail to Anita’s own rear then her face, it was a bit hard to tell who he had been addressing.

Ah. And the green one was here too. …what was his name? David let out a bit of an embarrassed laugh, "What's up, guys? Enjoying the event?"

While it may not have been immediately clear from a casual observer who David was addressing, Tango knew immediately and Anita -- who had completely missed the look to her rear -- assumed, from the scratches offered to the dog. Anita turned and smiled, Tango craned his neck back and panted, wagging harder before turning to sniff the man's hand.

Cruz and David had previously been acquainted, when the frei was young and only a month or so old. Lab's last Halloween party. It'd been so long that the croc didn't recall David at all, leaving the opportunity for a blank slate meeting.

"Hey," Anita offered with a small grin.

The frei hovered close to his woman and dog, and offered a pleasant tooth filled smile to David as well. "Hello," he rumbled like a purr, low and calm despite the look of elation on his face.

"We just got here, as a matter of fact. Weren't sure where to start. Anything you'd recommend?"
PostPosted: Thu May 15, 2014 4:27 pm

David couldn't really put together his last encounter with Cruz but by the way the Frei purred his hello, David felt a chill run up his spine. And it wasn't from the sweat. Something about the smile on Cruz's sharp features made David think of Prajna, the Nao's own mischievous Frei, and the man felt compelled to tip-toe around the emerald Raevan, though not to be so cautious as to be impolite.

"Well, I just got here too. Or rather, I'm going there," David tossed his head in the general direction of the bathing booth where some other volunteers were already lathering up some smaller breeds."Y'know, I might just be a volunteer today but if you stick with me, I might be able to snag you guys some freebies. Plus, having friends around will stop the staff from pulling me into more manual labor."

The man bent low and ruffled Tango's fur, smiling warmly, "Would you care to join me for a bath then?" David scratched the dog behind his ears but this time the playful Nao was clearly looking up at Anita to see if he had stirred a captivating reaction. Ahhh, to be around such innocence. David had missed Anita's company in a way.

Both human and frei followed the nod toward the baths, their canine companion keeping his attention on David as long as the scratches and pets continued. Anita scoffed and hung her head, releasing Tango's leash to Cruz's control as she tucked her hands in her pockets.

"Not looking for hand outs, you know. We came to help you guys raise funds." Not that the offer wasn't appreciated. She smirked to show as such. If David insisted, she wasn't about to turn down the hospitality but she would certainly pay for a few more things to compensate.

The way David asked about the bath, looking up at Anita instead of down at Tango, it certainly could have been taken one day. Anita chose to take it another. "I'm sure he'd love to," she stated, quirking a brow. Cruz chuckled pleasantly beside her, prompting a soft "oh" from his guardian. "I don't think you two have met," Anita reached over to hold the frei's shoulder, "This is Cruz. Cruz, this is David. He helped Tango's doctor when we still lived in Durem. You're also--" she bit her lip, squinting a bit while side-eying the man, "You're Prajna's guardian, aren't you? With your sister?"

If Cruz was already alight, he looked full to bursting at the star's name. He gasped softly, turned to his woman, then smiled down at David as a dreamy sigh passed his lips. "Prashna... How is Prashna? It's been a long time..." The croc missed the fallen star dearly. Over a year had passed since the two saw one another and Cruz couldn't be sure where they now stood, with him having to apologize for how much attention he was offering the frei. Hopefully they were well and didn't think poorly of him.

Yup. Those two have caused trouble somewhere, sometime.

As Cruz's eyes lit up like stars at the mentioning of Prajna's name, David could only imagine what ruckus Namini had to deal with when the two must have run into one another while in his sister's care. Standing up, though, David made sure not to let these thoughts affect his features. He offered a hand to Cruz, still smiling, "Yes. Pleasure to meet you Cruz. Prajna's at home today with Namini; they're discussing some summer plans regarding some trip Namini will be making to Aekea at some point. I'm sorry they couldn't be here today, but I'll make sure Prajna receives your um..."

Was "love" the appropriate word here?

"I'll make sure Prajna receives your... kindness. I'm sure Prajna has missed you too, Cruz. I'll make sure Namini schedules a meeting between you two in the nearby future," David winked at the crocodile soul and then continued slowly towards the bathing booth, his attention returning to Anita. "Well, I'm not saying you have to get stuff for free but I could get you some freebies and you could donate as you see fit~ But first, let's get Tango a nice bath, hm?"

As David approached the stand, he finished rolling up his pants, frowning a bit. Nina was probably going to take her time bringing him his clothes, so David would have no choice but to get his apparel wet, at least a little bit. "Is Tango's skin sensitive to anything? I think they have an oatmeal based shampoo you could actually buy if you liked the way it handled his fur."

David began rummaging around the supplies as he had another volunteer prep a small kiddie pool for bathing. Jokingly, he called out to Anita, as he looked for some brushes and a place to put his sandals, "You better not be checking out my a**, Anita!" The man popped his head out of some boxes to offer the girl a wicked smirk before reaching back in to try and find some towels.

Once more, Tango's leash switched hands and returned to Anita so the two boys could have a proper greeting. David's hand was immediately greeted by one of Cruz's, an early light tan beginning to darken his skin in preparation of the coming Summer. His nails, long as they were, were careful not to scrape against the man's skin. The frei shook David's hand casually with a gentle smile until the mention of setting up a meeting. His other hand swiftly found David's and soon it was cradled by both of the croc's as he leaned forward with an even brighter smile.

"Thank you," he cooed breathlessly.

Anita smiled at her charge before turning her attention back to David with a smirk and slight bow of her head. "Appreciate it, then, thank you." One hand reached out to stroke along his back and lightly ruffle the fur behind his bandanna. "Artificial scents make him really itchy, but nothing else especially. That sounds real nice, though, think we could try that."

" 'Nerva eats oatmeal, doesn't she?" the croc ventured, which made Anita chuckle.

"Sometimes, yeah, but it's good for your skin too."

"But you don't like it."

"Not to eat, no." Anita shook her head as they followed David toward the bathing station.

She gave him an exasperated laugh and made a show of leaning her head back and covering her eyes with a hand, almost dramatically. Cruz took hold of Tango's leash again and lead him closer to David once he was done getting ready and hovered low, undoing the dog's bandanna and collar so they wouldn't get wet. It wasn't as though Tango disliked baths necessarily, or getting wet, but with all of the other dogs around it was difficult for Tango to concentrate and listening to directions was a bit more complicated when one could scarcely hold his attention. Thankfully, he stood still and merely panted away, wagging his tail while waiting, but his head kept turning to and fro to look over every nearby canine in sight.

Disappointed in Anita's lack of blush or stutter, David returned to his effortlessly charismatic professionalism as he placed two large towels in the cool grass besides the kiddie pool, "If either of you would like something to drink while I give Tango a nice rub down, they have some juices and water bottles in that cooler -David nudged towards a large tub of ice and drinks- for a dollar each. If you don't have cash, help yourself. I'll cover it later."

Then the man turned playfully and looked at the anticipating Tango. The eldest Nao seemed to have the biggest, dumbest smile on his face as he turned the water off for the time being. Tango was a fairly decent sized dog who seemed anxious but not at all bitey or jumpy, David noted thankfully. Dipping his own feet into the small pool of cool water, David made sure to place the oatmeal shampoo nearby as he made some small splashes, hoping to catch Tango's attention. While Tango still seemed distracted, David let out a small whistle before sending a playful splash Tango's way, the water hitting the dog's front paws, "Tango! Want to join me?"

Slipping back into his boyish ways, David looked up at Anita and tried to tease the girl again, "If this was a more private setting, I would have invited you in too. I'm sure you'd like the way the water feels too. Heh."

David smirked again before taking a bigger cup of water, using his hands, and threw it in Anita's general direction, though made sure not to actually hit her clothing.

"Oh, thanks," Anita laughed as she started over to the tub. She couldn't help but shake her head at David's offer. "Believe me, we got the cash."

Drinks were something that slipped Anita's mind until they got out into the park and the sun hit them. Both she and Cruz were sensitive to heat, but the croc was much more adept at soaking it in pleasantly than she was. While he delighted in sunlit caresses and turned a golden brown at the peak of the season, Anita was prone to sunburn and sweat. Hydration was extremely important for both of them, either way, and for Tango too with his thick fur. Thankfully, David had that taken care of for the moment.

When the cold and dripping water bottle rested against the crook of Anita's neck, she let out a soft sigh. She watched David attempt to coax Tango into the water with a quiet grin. Cruz, too, looked amused as he wrung Tango's accessories in his hands until he tucked them under an arm to receive his water bottle from Anita.

The Saarloos startled slightly from the splash and gave a playful half bark as he jumped to attention. It would take a bit more than that to get Tango into the small pool but at least he was paying the man mind. Anita had her own elsewhere as she fought the cap and gulped down a quarter of her water. Both she and Cruz did something of a double take at David's admission; Anita honed in on the mention of a "private setting" and Cruz on the hypothetical invitation itself. She opened her mouth to respond but only managed a short gasp as the water splashed against her red tank top, darkening her chest,

It took a second for Anita to right herself from glancing down. "Tango, get him," she smirked. The dog whipped his head toward Anita for just a moment, then he pounced into the bathing area with David. A throaty but entirely nonthreatening growl heralded play time for the dog, who leaned down on his front legs and raised his haunches to wag his tail as high in the air as he could manage. The splash slapped against David's lower half with quick force.
PostPosted: Thu May 15, 2014 6:08 pm

For a moment, David was prepared to flip Tango like a pancake as the dog lunged forward. Too many times had women brought in their feisty Chihuahuas or Pomeranians and tried to sick them on the man, just because they didn't like the way he handled their pooches during a cleaning or check-up. Thus David knew how this was going to end and David was not about to let himself get tackled by a dog Tango's size... but thankfully, the shepherd launched himself onto the man with nothing more than a pup's enthusiasm. The water was kicked high, splashing the man in the face and across his entire torso.

There goes staying dry, David thought as he started to scratch Tango between the ears again, "You seem ready to go now, huh, boy?"

David reached for the oatmeal shampoo and poured some into his palm. He offered it to Tango, making sure the pooch had an opportunity to inspect what he was about to get bathed in. Then the dark haired Nao began massaging the soap into Tango's fur, getting deep under his undercoat.

"So? Is there something particular you guys want to do today? We've got some booths offering dog treats, toys, salon services, ect. Cruz, are you looking for anything?" David asked as his knitted his brow together in deep concentration, focusing on any spots he could find any matted fur or tangles. He could only hope nothing caught Tango's attention and pulled the dog out of his arms... David didn't need to be on some episode of Denise the Menace.

Tango was certainly an intimidating dog at a glance; eighty pounds of sleek wolfish muscle with long legs good for running and pouncing. Even so, his mannerisms were gentle and playful, well trained. Anita had certainly taken care to stamp out any potentially aggressive behavior when he was very young. The pup was quick to sniff at the oatmeal treatment, though he had no desire in tasting and it soon lost his interest in favor of David's chin, which he set about sniffing once the man was knelt close enough. He didn't seem bothered at all by the application.

It was Anita's turn for some slight disappointment, as David also didn't appear bothered by her retaliation. All the same, she supposed that was for the best and conversation continued on to something more constructive. She smiled.

"Not sure. We'll have to take a look around. Didn't know what all was gonna be here before we set foot."

Cruz raised his brows, smile lessened but no less genuine. "Toys," he grinned, "treats, kisses." Anita laughed and took another swig of water.

While Tango was certainly not causing a ruckus, his attention was still everywhere. There were so many things to smell, so many dogs to see, so many places to explore. So many spots to do his business. Tango turned his head all around the park to examine what it had to offer, while slowly twisting his body around in David's arms. He made no sudden moves to get out of the bathing tub but the wolfdog padded leisurely in the water away from David to try and get a better look at things along the circumference.

"Kisses?" David couldn't stop the work from rolling off his tongue. He had paused for a moment before slowly building the lather back up in Tango's fur. His eyes shifted among the passing crowd, trying to pick out how many couples there were. A few....here and there, but nothing serious enough to have made David think kissing was an event here. But then he remembered...

"Ah, you know... There is a place you could get tons of kisses at," David remarked as he finished Tango's tail off. The man smirked for a moment, flicking some suds off his fingers at Anita, "Besides right here, I mean."

The man reached for the hose and turned the water back on, rinsing his hands free of any remaining soap before beginning to rinse Tango's front paws with the water. It seemed as if Tango was getting a bit restless with the commotion around them building up, more and more people coming out to see what all the hustle & bustle would be about; David could only hope nothing jumped out and surprised the youthful canine...

"There's this kissing booth a little walk away, next to some snack stands. They've got some pitbulls on display and I think it's like a dime a 'kiss'," David laughed, remembering how he had to help unload the rambunctious dogs, a process in which he got tackled to the ground and showered in "kisses."

Ah yes, there it was, the expected confusion. Cruz still didn't seem inclined to explain off the bat that kisses were his food source. At times Anita wondered if Cruz left it a mystery on purpose for his own amusement but that didn't quite seem to be the croc's style. Before she could open her mouth to explain, David seemed to catch on.

Their expressions were mimicked, both Anita and Cruz raising their brows curiously for David to elaborate. Again, he deviated to make a joke at Anita's expense. She was about to retort once more, but this time Cruz responded and shook his head. The kind of kisses he wanted, Anita would not provide. At the flicking gesture, Anita returned it without any suds to retaliate. Only a few droplets sprinkled her that time, to which she paid no mind.

Cruz lit up at the mention of kissing booths and quickly craned his neck to search for them. Further explanation caused him to calm and turn back to David with a pleasant smile. Dogs, also, could not provide the kisses he wanted.

"Dogs can't kiss lips," he mentioned, raising a hand to press two fingers against his as he pursed them, "And 'Nita can't either."

Can't wasn't exactly correct, he knew, but as far as his own were concerned it was as accurate as won't.

"I know where I'm gonna spend most of my money," Anita chuckled, putting her hands on her hips and looking around to try and spot the kissing booths as well. It was a joking jab at both of them but she was likely to follow through.

Seeing Cruz shake his head in disagreement, David frowned a bit as he continued rinsing Tango, "What do you mean Anita can't kiss? Something wrong with her lips? I could check them for you, y'kno--- Ah! s**t!"

Just as he was rinsing off Tango's back, the usually charismatic Nao dropped the hose, the water getting thrown directly up into the air before the hose whipped its stream across David's chest and face. Squinting in an unfortunately unattractive manner, David tried to grab the hose and prevent it from splashing others in the vicinity or hitting Tango in the face. But as David leaned forward to grab the hissing rubber snake, his foot slipped in the soapy water, causing the kiddie pool to tumble partially sideways, releasing a small river of suds and water into the grass. The small wave along with the rebellious hose sent splashes of water everywhere, hitting Tango, the other volunteers, Anita and Cruz, as well as other guests. When David finally grabbed hold of the hose, a good chunk of his pants were soaked up to the thigh and his face was dripping. He turned the water off just in time to see the damage he had done... and just in time for Nina to have seen what he had done.

"Woooowww. I didn't think you were afraid of a little water, David," the woman called as she approached the group with a small bundle of clothing in her hands. She placed them on a nearby chair before tossing David, Anita and Cruz some towels. David growled, "Shut up. I was just a little careless.."

Unlike him, David's cheeks had turned a boyish shade of pink. He had never been so uncool in his life...

"Yeah yeah. Hey, you should really be apologizing to this lady and her dog y'know, not trying to be all uppity!" Nina rolled her eyes before flashing Anita a tender smile. "I'm sorry, he's just a volunteer. I hope he hasn't treated a lovely lady such as yourself, or your cute companion, in any inappropriate manner. If so, please feel free to let me know. I'm his supervisor."

Nina shot David a sinister look as she emphasized the word "supervisor", smirking ever so slightly. David's frown deepened as he shook his hair dry like a wet dog would, "We're friends, Nina. Though..." David took off his wet shirt and tried to dry his skin off as best as he could, uncaring that there were other people in the area. Now it was Nina's turn to blush as she quickly looked away in embarrassment. David then turned to Anita and Cruz as he ruffled his hair and continued, "Though I am sorry about this mess. I really was careless."

While Anita was done paying David's jokes any mind, Cruz snapped to attention at the offer even before he finished speaking. Even as the hose dropped and the water sprayed, as Tango leaped from the bathing station to try and follow the hose's path and n** at the shooting water. Cruz was hit first, only resulting in a short blink. He continued to stare with raptured interest at David while Anita held her arms up and stepped back when it was already too late and her front was soaked.

No one had outright offered to kiss Anita before. Not like that.

Cruz rumbled when David finally wrangled the hose into submission. He was soaked but the sun would make quick work of the water. It wasn't a problem for the croc either way, as he reveled in the cool moisture compared to the humid air. Both were enjoyable in their own ways but Anita made the right call on giving him a bottle of water, he needed it and now he could conserve it.

Beside him, Anita was shaking her arms off. One of her braids was completely soaked, as it'd fallen over her shoulder in the front, her tank top was almost completely dark red compared to the bright back, and one leg of her jeans was splashed down to her shin. Just as David removed his shirt without care to those around him, Anita held the bottom hem of her tank and lifted, shaking it out while exposing her midriff and naval. She missed the older Nao's show entirely as a result.

"It's fine," she laughed without looking up at Nina, "Not like I'm gonna melt." Anita paused when David emphasized their friendship. Were they? They didn't speak often and, when they did, it was usually superficial -- like this. Hm. All the same, Anita gave a lopsided smile as she tried to wring her shirt out as best she could. "Hey, man, don't worry about it. s**t happens."

The frei's eyes danced between David and Anita as he hovered idly closer to Tango, eventually wrapping his arms around the dog's neck in a light hug to try and keep him in place. Anita didn't seem as open to approaching David as she was with, say, Shepard, or even Duncan and Mordekai, but David certainly did if he was making offers to check Anita's lips. Cruz pressed his own to Tango's wet head and blew a soft raspberry between his ears. He had to speak to David about this, with Anita out of earshot.
