 As ever, Wasp had been sent on a mission by his family. This time, rumors told of a bumper crop of oranges, and his sister knew exactly what to do with them. So many oranges that they were rotting on the ground? That meant so many fermented fruity drinks that nobody would be able to stand in a few days. And just in time, too; after the winter, their supply was running low. Wasp eagerly picked up his usual cobbled-together slings and set off to find the fabled orange grove. And find it he did. At first, he could only stare in awe at the bounty of oranges around him. At second, he just had to try one. And another. And a third...finally, licking juice off his face, he set to work.

Another kin heard the call for orange pickers. Actually, two kin. Actually, more than two, but it was these two who had come to investigate. "I hear there's good oranges to be had!" Shadelight had said, on his weekly visit. "Is that so?" Murkcrow had responded vaguely, looking around The Den for someone who was supposed to gather food. Oh, wait. That was Shadelight. "It would be really great if we had oranges, don't you think?" Murkcrow sighed then. His mother, after all, was a Provider for the Mothers Club, and he'd never hear the end of it if she didn't "provide" some oranges for everyone. Even if the one who was actually providing them was him. Well, misery always likes company, so when he came home and discovered his own daughter had stopped by for a visit, he decided to bring her along. Unfortunately, that plan backfired when the first thing she said was, "Hey, dad, have you heard about those oranges?" Sigh. Murkcrow really didn't see what was so great about oranges. And now here they were, with oranges all around them, and kin all excited by the prospect of a free lunch, everywhere. Murkcrow squinted at them and wondered how many other long-suffering fathers/sons/uncles/brothers/mothers/sisters/daughters/aunts were here while Tree Skeletons ate an orange.

Wasp picked up one oranges, two oranges, three oranges, and put them in his sling. Then he picked up a fourth and ate it. This was already boring work, but at least it came with free food, he thought.

Murkcrow also picked up three oranges, and passed them to his daughter. If he had to go around picking oranges, the least he could do is not carry them, he thought. Tree Skeletons just giggled when he constructed a makeshift pack out of branches to hold the oranges.

Wasp picked up a fallen branch with 4 oranges on it, and slid it into his sling. "Hey," he said, nudging the kin standing next to him, "How about these oranges, huh?"

"Oranges...?" Tree Skeletons echoed, then started laughing, a mad hyena laugh. "That's right, there certainly are a lot of them, aren't there? Maybe we should have brought more help." Her father, meanwhile, loaded more oranges into the pack on her back.

Well! She certainly did seem cheerful. He wasn't sure how much hilarity could be wrung out of oranges, but Wasp decided to have a go at it. She was a lovely doe, after all. Wasp picked up more oranges. "Hey, hey," he said. "What did the kin say to the green pumpkin?"

"What, what?" Tree Skeleton's eyes shone. Murkcrow was already groaning from somewhere on the other side of her, but he had oranges to pick up and she paid him no mind.

That sent Tree Skeletons into peals of laughter. Murkcrow groaned loud enough for Wasp to hear. "Hey, hey, I know one too," Tree Skeletons said when she finally stopped laughing. "Why did the orange stop rolling down the hill?"

"Because it ran out of juice!" Tree Skeletons laughed as hard at her own joke as anyone else. Murkcrow picked up another orange, and replaced the several that had rolled off of Tree Skeletons's back.
