It wasn't every day that Calcifer got the chance to make the journey into town for supplies. Much of what she sustained herself on was all part of the wilds around her, but she was quick to realize that it took a little more effort to live comfortably in the stature of a young child than it had in the diminutive form of a young slugma -- there was only so much space in her stomach a few berry bushes could fill on any given day! Not only that, but being able to be fully clothed in this form also seemed to be a necessity. Not that she minded that part too much, of course, for it was kind of uncomfortable otherwise.

Her self-employment may have brought little in the way of actual monetary value, for the most part, but there were other ways the young hybrid could find. Sometimes it was difficult when all Calcifer wanted by way of payment for a ferry across the river was a story, a book, something of value in a creative context... and creative people could be! Even if one ended up feeding her lies, an object of no value whatsoever could become a great catalyst for the wild imaginations of those in desperate need of a ride, or a rest.

Nevertheless, in town, such value was not so highly prized. There were a few people that offered food by way of passage, which was able to push back the need to head into town for supplies, but only a little. Many things had to be pawned off if they were of any real catch, but not before Calcifer had scribbled notes down about it. Selling off such loot, though, was never more than the last-ditch effort.

She readjusted how the straps of the backpack sat on her shoulders as she swung it back up, having just made a purchase from the bread market. It was fresh, it would keep a while... so long as it didn't get wet, and it was cheap. There was a little more variety, but most fresh items outside of the necessary had to be avoided; they just spoiled too fast, in most cases! She scanned the market streets a little before continuing on her way. With a slow inhale, a smile spread across Calcifer's face. The water smelled so salty here!
