"What would you name them?" Sam asked as he stared up at the darkened leaves swaying in the treetops overhead. Only the barest traces of moonlight filtered through the swaying greenery. Sam was painfully accustomed to Eowyn's bright outdoors. He may as well be in complete darkness for all he could make out. When his companion showed no signs of answering him, the Gaili turned on his side to give Oblivion a poke in the ribs.
The Alihora grunted softly, his tail twitched, but he didn't turn to face Sam or even mumble about how the Gaili shouldn't ruffle his feathers without permission. Samael tipped his head and scooted a bit closer, realizing too late that his bulky Khehora body wasn't exactly "stealth" material.
Levi's head rose from his pillow of deep green leaves and plush furs, obtained from the hunt of the day. "What?" He rumbled blearily, shooting Sam a sub-par, half-awake glare. "I'm trying to adjust to your sleeping schedule. Don't make this hard."
Right. Levi had slept predominantly in the day when they'd first met. His schedule hadn't changed much, since Sam was usually gone, meaning Levi had no reason to alter his normal routine. But they were together now, and the Gaili wasn't willing to struggle through the blackness of night. Samael hummed and laid a forearm across the Diabi's neck, so his claws could scrape just faintly through the particularly soft feathers that lined his throat. Oblivion sighed softly and rested his head down again, so Sam could nuzzle affectionately against the back of his head. "If you were a mother, what would you-"
"Why do I have to be the mother?" Levi grumbled, twitching his tail to smack against Sam's leg.
"Well, I'm not going to be." The Gaili snorted with a roll of his eyes. "Besides, you're too pretty to be the dad."
Levi huffed, but didn't turn to face him. The Diabi rolled his shoulders beneath the weight of Sam's arm. "I dunno. I don't know them, yet. It's hard to pick something so personal like that when I don't know anything about them."
The Gaili tipped his head and leaned onto all fours, bracing either of his claws around Oblivion's much more slender frame. "So, they'd just be nameless until they were old enough to have a personality?"
Levi rolled onto his back to face him, his paws dangling in the air from the abnormal position. "That's ridiculous. They have personalities before they even hatch." Levi informed him. He glowered at the Gaili for a moment. He wasn't really clueless, was he? Sam lived near all those females. He had a mother of his own. Shouldn't he know at least something about eggs? No, the Gaili hadn't hatched Carrion himself, but he'd still taken on the role of 'father' on his own free will. He couldn't just do that lightly.
Oblivion pressed a fore claw to his companion's chest and nudged him away. Sam stepped back with a tiny frown as Levi rolled back to his paws and shook his feathers out. "C'mon." The Diabi ordered, abandoning his nap in favor of guiding his obviously confused companion in the ways of eggs. His mother wasn't caring for any currently, but the clan was just a short flight away. Levi wasn't particularly welcome among them (they were clearly jealous), but if Sam approached in his Khehorian form, maybe the ladies would let the close enough just to peek at the eggs for a moment.
He brushed his wing against Sam's side in a silent urge to follow before Levi took to the air. There was only a second's pause before the sound of the Gaili's wing beats were behind him. They skimmed the treetops, flying against the wind. There was no need for words. They'd just be carried off, anyway, even if Samael was mildly interested in what Levi was taking him to see. They swerved down, landing in a small clearing surrounded by nothing but dark trees and glowing shrooms. Sam would never be used to this darkness. Ever.
So when a high caterwaul echoed through the blackness, Sam jumped, sucking in a lungful of air and whirling toward the noise. The Gaili paused, even as Levi shrugged the noise off and continued on his way. Hesitantly, Sam followed. Until it came again. He was almost distinctly certain the high, effeminate noise was a shout of 'Help!'
It was coming from the forest. It was probably none of his business, but if someone was shouting for help, Sam wasn't going to ignore it. He he knew the Diabi would probably prefer to mind his own business, but that just wasn't acceptable.
"Let's go!" Sam growled, as he took off at a brisk run, his claws digging into the soft earth as he charged headlong into the trees. The Gaili crashed through the forest. His noise alone should've been enough to terrify any smaller predators away, but the shrill cry echoed again.
When Sam burst through the bushes, he nearly stumbled over the young Orakoir that was cowering in the greenery. Instead, he just barely managed to hop over it and come face-to-faces with two large... things. When Levi landed at his side and the youngling realized it had two adult Khehora between it and the monsters, it turned tail and scampered off. Levi huffed and snapped, "You're welcome!" As she fled.
As the sound of the Orakoir rustling the bushes faded, one of the beasts skittered forward, shooting it's tail down to attack the larger Khehora. Sam jumped backwards as the barbed appendage dove down and lodged in the ground at the Gaili's feet. With a growl, Sam flung himself forward and drove his teeth through the limb, shaking it until he heard a crack, and the tip fell limply from his maw.
The beast roared and scrambled backward, all three of its jaws snapping wildly. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Levi wielding his shadow magic to fend off the second beast, at least while Sam finished the first. It's pincers snapped at him, but against Sam's earthen scales, and thick limbs, they merely glanced off of him. The Gaili leaped and landed heavily atop the beast. Despite the 'crunch' that echoed, it still wriggled to free itself. With a disproving snort, Sam bounced on it a few more times, until its body flattened to the ground and its legs splayed out awkwardly beneath it.
When Levi yelped, Sam turned back to his companion to see the second cah had sheered a few of the Diabi's lovely feathers with it's pincers. Oblivion was shimmying back slowly, growling and lashing out with the darkness to incapacitate its tail and bind its pincers together. His magic was strong, but the cah was reasonably size enough that it could still yank forward and threaten the Diabi with sharp teeth. While it was distracted, though, Sam called on his magic to rip up the earth around it. He shoved it to the side, and it flopped helplessly onto its back until Sam dispatched of it by crunching the earth down atop it.
Moments of quiet stretched as they waited to be certain the fight was over. When only the wind rustled, the Diabi spoke. "So..." Levi stared down at the bodies, giving one of them a nudge with his claw. "Do you 'spect they have three stomachs, too?"
