There was something about this morning that made Zia… Just smile! Maybe it was the cooler weather, maybe it was the glittering mists that were present at the moment, or even possibly the pleasantly bright sun! She stretched out her limbs before taking to the roguelands today- where would her two-toned paws carry her today?

First, she figured, to the nearest water hole- she had seen it last night before she fell asleep, but didn't quite remember where it was. A quick sniff and she was off in the right direction, she was sure of it! Her purple eyes scanned the horizon as the grass bent softly under her paws. What a nice feeling that was- so often the earth was hard and dry, or else where there was grass it was stiff and straw-like. The water from the rain that came through yesterday was already working its magic!

The grass shivered slightly, and not due to any wind. A small, blue form trundled out into the open space near the water, moving rapidly but alertly. It stopped on the edge of the pool and shoulders slumped in recognition.

Modesco sighed. He had followed the tell-tale glinting and while water was a good and wonderful thing, it was not a shiny prize. It was rather mundane, ordinary and, to be honest, kind of boring.

This made it a very poor morning for him. The previous day's rain left everything glittering until time and passage erased all those sparkling, shimmering drops from existence. Until that time came, he would almost certainly contineu to fall for their false lure.

The genet sighed, staring at his reflection as he curled his tail around himself, trying to console himself about the lack of scavengings he'd found. He had noticed that there was a Big Folk around, but this was a water hole and the peace held. Modesco tended not to have anything to do with Big Folk and they, in turn, rarely deigned to notice him.

Zia smiled widely as a glimmering appeared just over the crest of a hill- the water hole she had seen before lay before her, open for business. She made a contented little yip that she had found the place before she picked up the pace down the hill and trounced up to the water. Without a moment's hesitation, the hyena's thirst was quenched by the lovely cool water. As she lapped, though, a scent caught her nose- a genet was nearby. Without turning her head, she spotted his blue form out of the corner of her eye.

Well. This was awkward. Should she… speak to him? Just ignore him? It became clear that her attention was on him and she was trying to ignore it, but couldn't. She kept her head in a stiff straight-forward position while her eyes stayed at the corner of her eye, staring down at him. It would be rude, she concluded, to ignore him. What kind of creature would she be if she didn't say hi to a single soul at the water hole?

A terribly rude one, and that was not acceptable.

"Hello," she suddenly burst out at the genet, finally turning her head. Don't say anything about how short he is, don't say anything like that! she lectured herself in her head as she took note of just how much smaller he was than her. "Hhhhhhow's your patch of water today?" She asked smiling, making conversation. That was a good start to a conversation, right?

Modesco had only barely taken note of the Big Folk, so he was completely surprised when the hyena came over and spoke to him. Orange eyes opened wide as he looked up and up and up.

"Eh?" the genet responded inelegantly. Then the sense of what the Big One had said penetraded and he sat up straighter.

"Neh, shiny water not my shiny water. Shiny but not shiny," he answered, explaining matters to the the big female. Then a new thought occurred to the blue genet. "Shiny water you shiny water?" he asked.

… And don't say anything about how he talks! the hyena kept lecturing herself. She had to tilt her head a little at his words, they were hard to digest. But there was one thing she knew- he kept saying the word "shiny," and that meant she NEEDED to find out what he meant by it.

"Yeah, the water is shiny," she said, casting another glance at it. "But I'm not shiny water. I'm great at finding shiny things though," she admitted. "Want me to help you find something in there?" she asked, it was the only thing she could think that he meant. He had water, but nothing in it. He wanted to know if she had anything?

Well… She wouldn't just give him anything, but maybe with two sets of eyes they could find more things of value quicker. If they only found one thing… Well, she would take it of course- she was bigger. At any rate, she awaited to see if she had hit the nail on the head here.

Hmmm...the Big One seemed almost as perplexed by him as he was by her. Oh well, that was how things went. His mother had explained it to him when he was naught but a kit, that Big Folk and Small Folk were very different and it was difficult for the two worlds to find common ground.

Of course everyone needed to eat and drink and sleep, but even that could be slightly different in the hows and the whats and the whys. But the Big One didn't seem to want to hurt or hunt him, so Modesco would be friendly.

"Neh, shiny water yeh, shiny in water neh," the blue genet tried to explain. Damn if he was going to get his fur wet for no good reason! "Shiny you?" he asked in turn. He did love shiny things, and was always interested to see what others had, even if he couldn't find many for his own.

She was beginning to understand a little- he agreed that the water was shiny, that was for sure, but didn't see any shinies in it. Well, yes, she could agree with that. When she had had her drink, she only remembered seeing pebbles. But maybe there was something more than that to it.

One thing she was at least grateful for is that the genet had given her a chance. Zia almost never hunted anything, she always scavenged, but nobody trusted a seemingly friendly hyena. Too many who would just chow you down, she supposed, but she would hope that everyone would give the benefit of the doubt. Just as the blue genet before her.

"No, I haven't seen any shinies in the water either," she agreed sadly.

She thought she understood what he meant- "I like to keep my coat shiny, yeah. I try not to get it too dirty, but oftentimes I get some dust in it, so sometimes I have to roll around in the water." Hopefully the blue creature understood what she was saying too… Though, she was determined to try to get through the language barrier.

Modesco was both thrilled and disappointed that the Big One understood him at last. Thrilled because she knew what he said! Disappointed because she agreed there was nothing shiny in the water except the reflection itself.

And then everything was ruined by her misinterpreting him again. Though he considered what she had said. Her coat was not shiny shiny, no, but it was...healthy. Yeah, that was it. Not a bad thing, just not a shiny.

"Shiny fur neh shiny," he shrugged before looking up at the hyena again. "Shiny water neh shiny. Shiny you?" The genet repeated his earlier question after clarifying a little. Maybe now the Big One would understand. He could only hope, after all.

She was clearly completely intent on listening to the little genet- perhaps if she strained her large ears even more she would pick up something that she had missed- it was clear that she had gotten part of it wrong. She watched and listened as he explained himself, and his emphasis and clarification may have just helped! "Ooooh, so you're wondering if I have any shiny things?" She asked to see if that was right. Without giving him much of a chance to respond, she continued, "I've got a stash of them where I stayed last night. Whenever I move, I bring them with me. It's not much, but I've got a couple of shiny things." She would have a whole horde of shinies if it weren't for the fact that she would often use them diplomatically with strangers. Hunting and killing wasn't exactly in her nature, and whenever possible, she would even pay for dinner.

"Would you like to come look?" she offered with a small head tilt.

"Shiny yeh shiny!" the blue genet agreed eagerly as the Big One offered what he had sought at last. To see shinies, even if they belonged to another, was always a wonderful thing! He loved them so, even if he couldn't possess them. Even so, possession was simply a nice benefit, and not nearly as important as seeing the shiny itself.

The small mammal closed the distance between them and sat himself next to the hyena's leg, looking up at her with eager orange eyes.

"Now go, yeh?" he urged her.

Zia couldn't help but smile- she had found something in common with a new little friend- and it only took a few words! She was right to strike up a conversation with the different little mammal, she thought it was worth it. "Yeah, let's go now!" She was getting kind of excited to show her small, but shiny, collection to him- hopefully he would enjoy himself seeing what she had!

She waited for him to ready himself, and with a goofy grin on her muzzle, led the way slow enough for him to keep up off to her "den" that she had made for the night, where her little collection was. "I never introduced myself," she said as they headed off. "I'm Zia." She awaited his name as the pair padded off to her den.
