~~~Soudulian Haster Taming Adventure~~~ Step 1: Capture Win: 50-100 (-5 for Khehora, +20 from Sam's Khehorian Attack, +10 for Sam's title: Hunter, +5 for help from Levi, +5 from Soudulian Hastar bonus) 15-100 Rolled: 74 Outcome: Success! Words: 665Sam crouched in the brush, scrunching his wings and tail as close to his body as he possibly could. His heart raced. His eyes flicked to one side then the next, desperately searching for any sign of movement in this darkness. He was being hunted. He was being hunted and he needed a place to hide. Anyone with eyes suited to this dreary land would be able to pick out his stark green lime colors against the deep violets and blues of Soudul's forest. His two-legged form would've been much more conducive to concealing himself, but...
Unbeknownst to Sam, the shadows behind him began to slither together, melding into a dark, solid form that hovered over him, fanning wings to encase him with no means of escape. Pointed white teeth flashed in the darkness. At the last moment, Sam felt a ghost brush over his side, and he swiveled to face deep ruby orbs with a sharp gasp of surprise.
Levi lunged, crashing into him with his smaller frame. He struggled to pin Sam's broader, heavier body to the ground with just his fore claws, holding one against his neck and the other to his abdomen. The Gaili huffed, and squirmed only enough to rattle Levi and rustle his feathers, rather than to dislodge him. When Sam stilled, Levi beamed. "Caught you." The Diabi hummed in satisfaction, flicking the end of his tail over his companion's leg.
Samael rolled his eyes with a snort. "Of course you did." He scoffed, sounding only slightly genuinely miffed. "You have to be the only one that can really function in this forest, and you refuse to allow me to use my Khehorian form-"
"It's cheating." Levi insisted, leaning down to rub his soft feathered maw against the Gaili's. "I can't do that, after all." Sam's muscles bunched beneath him, and Levi hopped off of him with no more persuasion than that.
Sam rose slowly back to all fours, shaking himself out as he did so. "You have to practice more." He admonished tartly.
Oblivion grinned, the white of his teeth almost harsh compared to the rest of the darkness. "Then hide better." He clipped. "It's not useful magic training if you stay right where I can smell you."
Sam grimaced. He felt like all of his senses were dulled in this darkness. Smell included, for some odd reason. He couldn't see, he couldn't smell, he couldn't hear. If he leaned close enough, he could feel Levi's feathered dusting against him. the only solace he had. "How about we hunt something that isn't expecting you." Sam muttered, trotting deeper into the woods. He flicked his tail out to catch Levi's nose and encourage the Diabi to follow him.
Levi would probably never admit that Sam's tromping through the woods would yield him no prey, ever. The Gaili was a mountain Khehora, whom generally relied on a combination of aerial assaults and magic to land him a meal. Not here. Here tress blocked his sight and the earth was overrun with thick roots and blue-green grass. If he wanted to eat, he'd definitely have to-
"Look." Sam murmured, sticking his nose over a branch to peer ahead.
Levi's brows furrowed, and he stuck his head through the same opening as his companion's, instantly spotting a four-legged creature he'd seen many two-leggers ride. "That's a hastar." He whispered.
"I've never seen one so dark before..." Sam said. "I'm going to catch it. I need something to carry my stuff when I'm on the go!"
Before Levi had the chance to remind him that they were after lunch, Sam was diving ahead. His abrupt entrance startled the hastar only slightly, and when it tried to back away, a wall of earth emerged to keep it from retreating too far. It bayed as its motion was stopped, then turned and tried to flee again. But Sam's walls encircled it, capturing it with their grasp and steadily moving to enclose the strange creature farther.
Step 2: Taming (Sam's Roll) Win: 50-100 (-5 for Khehora, +5 for help from Levi, +15 from Soudulian Hastar bonus) 35-100 Rolled: 17 51 from Levi Outcome: Success Words: 317
Levi grimaced as he watched Sam approach the enclosure. After a quick change to his... reasonably well-built two-legged form (as for as Levi could see, anyway), the Gaili stuck his arm out, offering it for the weary hastar to sniff. Oblivion could only frown at the sight. He tried to remain passively neutral, when his maw naturally wanted to dip into a scowl. A frown was the best he could manage. Was the Gaili really so lonely? So bored that he sought out companionship from every beast that he crossed paths with? This wasn't the first creature Sam had tried to capture in Soudul, and unless Levi did something, it wouldn't be the last. He honest to Abronaxus could not tolerate living with any more creatures that got more attention than he did. He sidled up to Sam's side.
The haster whinnied and whipped it's head away from the Gaili's hand. Against his better judgement, Levi found himself murmuring, "Feed it a bit of fruit..." He half expected the Gaili carried such things around with him now, just in case he needed to seduce some strange little critter.
And he was not disappointed.
Sam tucked his arm into his constantly-present messenger bag, and his fingers emerged with a small globe of yellow fruit. It seemed unlikely that it had come from Soudul... At least Levi wasn't familiar with it. The Gaili offered it to the hastar. the dark beast was wearily hesitant. But it didn't have anywhere to go or anything better to do. After a moment, it leaned close enough to sniff the snack. With its dark eyes still on Sam, it leaned its maw in close enough to drag the fruit forward and out of the Khehorian's grasp with its lips before sinking its teeth into it with a squish. It huffed, but when Sam leaned in to comb through its mane, it didn't object.
Step 2: Taming (Levi's Roll) Win: 50-100 (-5 for Khehora, +5 for help from Levi, +15 from Soudulian Hastar bonus) 35-100 Rolled: 51 Outcome: Success Words: 310 (Total of 627 for Step 2)
And so it came to pass that as long as Sam dangled a piece of fruit or a handful of berries in front of the haster, it would follow him with only a minimal amount of hesitance. Oblivion was relieved that it seemed to be one of the Gaili's more dignified pets. It didn't screech, howl, or fawn over him like the others did. It possessed a sense of "person" that the Diabi found refreshing. Not that he'd ever admit it.
In fact, after Sam had found a rope of reasonable length to restrain the hastar to their encampment, Levi decided to snoop a bit. As the Gaili sat down, still sticking to his two-legged form like he usually did when with his pets, Oblivion curled around him, flicking his tail across Sam's lap to keep his attention. Samael leaned back with a soft sigh, contentedly adjusting himself to the warmth and comfort of the Diabi's feathers.
Once Levi was fairly certain the Gaili had no intention of moving, he rumbled out, "Why?" At Sam's confused expression, he elaborated. "Why do you feel the need to try and tame every creature we come across? Are your current pets not satisfying enough?"
Sam had a sneaking suspicion that there was more to this conversation than a curious inquiry. He shrugged nonetheless. "I dunno." He admitted. "It's just... fun. Nice to have something to look after. Something I own. Something that can be mine that relies on me. That needs me."
"Things can be yours without you owning them." Oblivion retorted with a grumble. Sam shot him an inquisitive look. "And someone... can need you without being coerced with a piece of fruit." The Diabi rubbed the side of his head against Sam's arm. "Just... Food for thought, I suppose." The Diabi murmured as he lay his head down on his forearms.
Step 3: Training Win: 50-100 (-5 for Khehora, +5 for help from Levi, +15 from Soudulian Hastar bonus) 35-100 Rolled: 54 Outcome: Success Words: 794
The morning found Sam caught between whether he should untie the hastar and see what it could do, or staying swathed in the heat of the Diabi's plush feathers. He nestled his head against the obsidian lining of Levi's stomach, and stared up to his face. He'd seemed... Strange last night, somehow. For someone so cocky and flirtatious, he'd almost sounded... desperate? Resigned? Pleading? What did he want from Sam, anyway? Just attention? Levi was the needy sort, so it certainly wouldn't surprise the Gaili if he wasn't satisfied with his portion of the spotlight.
With a huff, he shook his head and stood, before meandering toward the hastar. It stared at him expectantly, clearly awaiting a morning treat. Sam offered it a strange, mushy-feeling, deep blue fruit that Levi's mom had gifted him, saying that the haster would greatly enjoyed it. Once it was finished, Sam slunk around to untie it. For an adult wild beast, it seemed remarkably mild. It was patient, tolerated Sam fastening the ropes about it like makeshift reins (this was ho real two-leggers did it, right?), and even did little more than glower when Sam pressed his arms against its back, testing to see if it would really be willing to support him.
It fidgeted and snorted, but... seemed... okay with it. So, taking as much care as he possibly could, Sam floated up. The hastar stared at him over it's shoulder. The Gaili met its gaze and slowly settled himself on its back so as not to startle it too terribly. It tolerated him pressing his arms on its back. It did not tolerate being mounted.
Before Sam had even plucked up the ropes, it thrashed, charging ahead a few feet and stamping; front legs. Spinning and shouting and more stamping; back legs. Sam shouted for it to stop, yanking on the ropes and digging his heels into the beast's side. And it wouldn't listen.
He wasn't sure where Levi appeared from. All he knew was the Diabi brought with him a small stack of fruits and berries that he spread out before the hastar. When it noticed, it gradually stilled, and slowly ambled over to munch down into the trail.
"Have you thought of maybe taking your ample training prowess and gearing it towards... something more useful?" Levi demanded once Sam was safely back on the ground.
Sam scoffed. "Oh, don't blame him. A bit more time, and he'll have no trouble toting me or my things about!"
The Gaili noticed how the corner's of Levi's mouth drew back in annoyance. "I don't really care about the stupid hastar!" He snapped, bearing his teeth at Sam. "We- You have better things to do than share your home with a bunch of wild beasts! Haven't you ever thought of- of children?! Of a real family?! Or are you just resigned to this in your desperation?! Sam! Answer me!"
When had the air gotten so thick? The Khehorian suddenly found it difficult to breathe, surprised and confused as he was. "W-well when the time is right, I'll-?" He stammered uncertainly. he wasn't entirely sure where he was headed with that, but Levi cut him off, anyway.
"The time is right now. You have a home, a clan. You're- you're happy. You- you have me. I- We..."
Silence descended upon them like a shroud. Levi was never one to mince his words or leave anything unsaid, but there was still clearly more that Sam was missing. "I have you?" He asked softly. The Diabi nodded. "What do you want from me?"
Levi sighed lowly. "I just feel like your time could be spent better on... something of your own breed. You had Carrion. He's grown up now. I-is that why-?! I spent a lot of time with him too... Watching him grow up and all. I liked having that little kid to show the world to. So if... you... wanted..." He trailed off again, leaving Sam to guess and assume at what he was saying.
"You actually want to take care of Orakoi?"
Levi whined pitifully and dove forward, slamming his wing into Sam's jaw and knocking the Gaili backwards. "N-no! Shut up! If I did, I..." He huffed and curled his head against Sam's throat. "Well, shut up, anyway. It's not like I have a means of producing eggs, so, well it's nothing to worry about!"
Sam reached up, smoothing his hands down Levi's ruffled feathers. "I have you?" He repeated. Levi snorted and stuck his nose deeper in the crook of Sam's neck. The Gaili hummed in amusement. "Well, that's enough for now. If you want me to stop, I will." A pause. "I guess that means you'll want the hastar to stay with your mother too."
