BACKSTAGE The Backstage area is a large open block where contestants and the racing gerbils are free to prepare. The room itself is fit for gerbil royalty, and is the perfect place for trolls to mingle and attempt to get sponsors for their gerbils, as well as check out the competition.
The cages housing the racers line the outside of the room on tall counters, complete with cubbies for their owners, and grooming stations. There are some scattered gerbil toys around the room for general entertainment. Free samples of sponsored beverages and snacks are arranged on tables in the middle of the otherwise spacious room, and gaudy cardboard cutouts and decorations are being stored backstage for the set-up of the race. This is an Open Roleplay for all registered trolls to take part in! It will be open from May 1st onward. During the event, posts that are at least 100 words long will earn the user 1 2 gerbcurrency per post (value may increase over time). Please attempt to roleplay with other trolls; this ORP is not intended for solo RPs.

Bright and early, bright and early. That was the way to win, Dictys reminded emself. Ey checked over Laureate's cage approvingly. Ey'd placed it in a cage with perfectly maintained temperature and well-regulated sleep cycles to ensure it got proper amounts of rest in the days and nights leading up to the competition: now that ey (and Laureate) were in Chittentown, though...
Well, they'd just have to adapt. There was a reason all the gerbils were placed in closely monitored cages in the days leading up to the race; Dictys certainly wanted everyone to know how Laureate would win fair and square. Ey had been one of the first gerbil owners to step through the doors this evening, and ey spent the first hour ensuring that Laureate was absolutely comfortable, and that its exercise equipment was in fine working order. It dipped its little freckly head at em and Dictys flashed a smile. Who knew that something ey'd picked up in the dirty, lowblooded desert might actually lead to...something interesting? Something glorious? Ey checked over Laureate again and began to circle the room to chat up competition, and perhaps win Laureate some supporters. It certainly deserved them - it belonged to Dictys, after all!

Sneakers scuffed the simple plywood flooring, hesitating at each gerbil cage before moving on and back again. Aandes crossed his arms across his chest and leaned at the waist. He squinted. Puckered his lips. And returned to standing. Aandes had the determination of a judge.
Too fat. Too many legs. Too... Aandes crinkled his nose lightly. Unusual. He paced across the ground, hungry for victory. If he was going to put stake into a gerbil, it had to be a winner. No ifs, ands, or buts. NummCorp was going to pay serious beetles for a winner, after all, and what better way to get noticed than to be a sponsor for an up and coming race animal? The creatures were rather endearing, he had to admit -- Koalapops' multi-limbed marsupial appeal was not lost on him. But he couldn't let that cloud his vision. And he needed to make some bank on this.
Aandes looked over his shoulder to make sure no one was watching and poked one of the intrepid racer's pudge through the cage bars. "Hmmm..." He found himself humming aloud, and quickly reverted his face to a neutral expression. Poker face, Aandes. He took a deep breath in and out, flaring his nostrils in the process. He faced inward, towards the middle of the room. There was a gaudy seadweller his age across the way. Aandes raised his eyebrows. That was interesting.

Bright and early? Well, her sense of time was really off considering where she lived. Still, Weywot had heard that there was going to be a gerbil race and she finally, finally, decided to make herself known. She'd given herself a 'bath' as best as she could. Basically she just dusted herself off and tried to find her least dusty outfit. It was a lot of work she wasn't used to and the longer she took the more her nerves got the better of her. She fussed with that mop she called hair and tried to get it to look 'tame' by her own standards, which was just not quite as sticky-up as when she first woke up.
Somehow she'd managed to find the backstage for the event and there were already a couple of trolls here. Well.. two? Two were okay. She figured she really couldn't mess things up with only two trolls. Would there be others?
So, with dirt still smudged on her, Weywot took a deep breath and wandered inside with heavy footsteps. She couldn't help that! It made her fluster a little and then she just ducked her head a bit in hopes no one pointed it out.

There really weren't too many trolls here yet. Now that was disappointing. Either way, though: an audience was an audience. Dictys waved at first the greenblood and then the blueblood in turn (in that order mostly because the greenblood had a snappier hairstyle, and Dictys did so appreciate fine hair care). "Hello there," ey declared, a cheerful hum behind eir tone. "I'm Dictys Glauci. It's a pleasure." Were they owners? Ey couldn't tell - the greenblood had been poking around some of the creatures, so perhaps he had an interest in that one. The blueblood didn't look like an owner, partly because she had just walked in, and partly because she didn't look or act like she'd ever touched one of the creatures (then again, neither had Dictys until a few weeks ago).
Either way, she was slightly higher priority for em, if only because she looked like she had a bit less of a personal investment in the race. And ey'd memorized the list of competitors and their owners (noting some of the names with particular distaste), so ey'd know soon enough whether or not they had sponsored gerbils. Assuming they were relatively polite, and introduced themselves in turn, anyway. Thank the stars for eir memory; Dictys didn't know what ey'd do without it.

Nervit was perfectly on time. Promptness was a part of politeness and obedience, after all. Or at least, she WOULD have been perfectly on time had she not had to wait on a blueblood hanging around the entrance first, nervously waiting for them to enter before entering herself. As it was she was perhaps a little late - there were already three trolls there, and even worse, they were all highbloods! Swallowing quietly, Nervit vowed to herself to be on her very best behaviour - especially as that was definitely a seadweller there yep oh boy. or girl. or other. You could never presume!
Quietly she slipped in, slinking over to the cage that Chamomile was in, and greeting the hyper little gerbil with a treat. The gerbil chittered happily at her loving owner as she petted her through the bars in the cage. After petting the gerbil for a bit, her nerves decreased and she turned to the other trolls in the room and waited patiently for a lull in the conversation to introduce herself.
"Pardon my intrusion, but it's a pleasure to meet you all. I'm Nervit."

"Dictys?" Began Aandes. He chose his tone carefully; a sweet and simple undercurrent, layered with a sprinkling of curiosity. Aandes crossed deftly over to the seadweller. Ey was dressed to the nines. A pang of jealousy surged through Aandes' bilesack, and for a moment he couldn't help but stare in awe. Highbloods could get away with anything.
The young troll straightened his expression again and decided upon a courteous bow to the seadweller. He was aware of the blueblood, but based upon her introversion and apparent lack of gerbil, she was unimportant. Aandes smiled at her pleasantly. "Aandes LaMode, honored. Is this your gerbil?"
He gestured with a nod to the dappled creature shuffling around in its cage. The seadweller was royalty. That meant lots of sponsorships. Success. Status. Aandes cooed.
There was a brownblood somewhere else in the room, but Aandes had found his target.

'The nines' was not perhaps the best way to describe Dictys' outfit, unless you were attempting to describe the sheer amount of gold and gemstones on it. What could ey say? Ey liked things that sparkled! Ey'd tried to keep it minimal, though, if only because ey didn't want to disturb Laureate in its sleep. Ey nodded at the acknowledgement, face quirking into a fat smile. Aandes LaMode certainly hadn't entered a gerbil into the race, and that meant he was prime for the taking, gerbcurrency-wise. "This is Laureate," ey said, rather smugly. "It's almost certainly a future champion - I have a history of excellence; I placed first at this sweep's Battle of the Ballads and I'm well-known around New Hemisect City for championing their fundraising cause. I topped the list of fund-raisers. Supporting Laureate and me is an almost certain guarantee of supporting victory."
Okay, ey'd maybe been practicing a little since the Modsats.

Aandes made sure to turn his face closer to the sleeping gerbil, taking care to avoid touching the cage with his pompadour and hide his rather slightly disgusted expression by staring intently through the bars.
So this was the seadweller that was crowned Most Valuable Participant at the New Hemisect disaster. So this was the same seadweller who had beaten him out at Bloodfest. A shiver ran down Aandes' neck, and he twisted back to look at him. "Ah! I've heard of you. I was at both of those events, how fortuitous," he gleamed. "It really is an honor."
Aandes stood back up, straight now. He held one of his arms in the crook of his elbow to cradle his chin, tapping his lower lip thoughtfully.
"Hmm. I've got some gerb...Gerbcurrency to spend. I want to make sure it's well placed on a victor, though your resume--" And pedigree, thought Aandes sharply, "is quite impressive,"
He pursed his lips (emulating something of a coy smile he'd seen on an Alternian soap the other night) and took another look up and down at the troll, wondering if this was what was in vogue with seadwellers. His pump biscuit began to thump a little quicker... This was his first opportunity to have leverage with a seadweller. His first big challenge. And he'd caught a big fish, to boot. Aandes would have so much to tell Koalapops, and Rasali, about his win later.

Lunear was decked out. Decked out in his best 'for the tracks' gear. Granted this meant less than perfectly brushed hair and mildly not his best boots, but one didn't want to look too fancy at a place to race. You had to look the part, blend in. Marian and Gabiel were wiggling and kind of half flopping around on each other, a bit upset with being so rudely stuck in a cage of all things to be moved. They preferred his coat pockets when it came to travel after all. As he made his way to the backstage, letting his... companions free to frolic and go play- (or in both their cases tumble from their cage and promptly find a nice place to go curl and nap), Lunear looked about to begin his part in the race. The PR part. Now while there was a purple sea dwelling troll in the room, it was always, in Lunear's mind, best to see to the plebs first. The lower trolls were so often, the most under appreciated. And under estimated. "Greetings." Lunear went to the under blood, smiling and offering his hand. "Lunear Reglos. You a fellow racer by chance?" It was a safe bet they were- who wasn't? Aside from... that.. odd....blue blood....

Aandes' pomp was quite impressive, and Dictys watched him hawk-eyed. Ey didn't want poor Laureate's rest to be disturbed! "Were you really?" Dictys beamed. Actually, ey might remember Aandes face - just a bit. "The pleasure is mine; I love meeting likeminded trolls." Ey meant the sort of trolls who felt a similar pride in their place at the top of the galactic food chain, even if the empire's conquests had been, well, slowed for a bit. That was fine, though: there were more planets out there to conquer, more stars to discover...
"Well, I suppose you're right in waiting a bit - Laureate itself is not a winner yet." To this Dictys winked. "But I'd advise you to heavily consider supporting it; I am intimately familiar with victory." As any troll of eir station should be, Dictys thought. Not that the collective purplebloods had done too well at Bloodfest, Dictys aside.

Nervit wasn't fussed about being ignored by the seadweller and the tealblood - in fact, if any empathetic trolls were around they would able to sense a wave of relief (tinged with a tiny hint of bitterness, though - Nervit simultaneously wanted company and didn't want to be noticed, a contradiction in itself but very in-tune with her nature.) And so when Lunear, a very snazzy looking blueblood approached, both pleasure and fear warred within.
Oddly, none of this emotional turmoil was very visible ; Nervit's face was kept placid the whole way through. A practiced skill from the little underblood. She smiled politely at Lunear, dipping into a curtsy before taking his hand in hers and giving it a firm, brisk shake.
"Yes, my name is Nervit Lafute. It's nice to meet you, Mr. Reglos."

"Absolutely," Aandes said. He smiled and tried to conjure a blush at Dictys' sly wink. "I certainly wouldn't mind being on the winning track, if you know what I mean." It was a bold statement, perhaps. Aandes did mean it though, and it was a rather double-pronged attack. Sure, he wanted to win for once -- the seadweller had taken that away from him twice now. But could he stuff away his pride to ride Dictys' glittery coattails? Probably. Aandes had already started to plot. Either way, this relationship could only be beneficial. "I'm going to do some looking around, but... I'd love to talk more," mused Aandes. He excused himself after taking another glance at Laureate and returned to the prowl. Perhaps he could overhear something juicier from the others backstage. gc: 6

Lunear grinned and gave the other troll as firm a shake as he could without going 'limpwristed'. Or attempting to break another troll's hand. Because one, he wasn't that strong at all, and two- he frankly felt that was pretty rude and not exactly a thing to win him any points. "Please call me Lunear." He winked, already liking the formality of this troll. "Tell me, when you found your multi-limbed companions, were they just as affectionate as mine were? They just sort of.. crawled into my coat. I think they had been attempting to avoid other lusii and the ever changing weather. Terrible thing, that whole weather debacle." Fishing for information, hints as to perhaps, who else had gone on the desert excision. He was all smiles however, looking towards the others. "Perhaps if you'd like, we might scope out our competition together hrm?" He even offered her his arm. Gentlemanly like. Please yeah that totally was an A+ idea to win trolls over. Smooth operator Lunear.

" Toodles!" Dictys smiled, toothily. " I'll make sure to look out for you." Ey turned eir attention now to the rather shabbily-dressed blueblood: it was time to make inroads with her, since everyone else here seemed already occupied. (The orange and blue pair wasn't too shabbily dressed - although Dictys recognized that blueblood from All Egg Day, and ey thought perhaps the troll was a little airheaded. They could both do with some bling.) " How has your experience been treating you? Have you checked out the rather excellent facilities at the gymnasium yet?" Ey was fluttering eir carefully kept eyelashes at Weywot now. " You should really come meet my Laureate if you haven't; it's really quite the top-notch racer." If Dictys could get a contributor here, too... ORP total: 8 grand total: 66
