Life was beautiful.
In that moment, in the peace of early morning, Akiilani lay in the dew-damp grasses surrounded by flowers of violets and pinks, colors that matched her dusky grey-purple coat beautifully. Her eyes were heavy, legs curled up against her body, her neck wrapped around the small wicker basket...the basket that held her child, her gift from the stars. After years of wishing and trying, Lani had been so certain she'd become barren... She and Basil had tried, in vain, to have another batch of kids...
She'd gone to the Great Wishing Star, one last hopeful time...and this time, the Star had granted her wish. The child slumbering in that basket--whether colt, filly, or something inbetween--was her second chance.
Her heart beat in a steady rhythm as she began to wake, the song of birds trilling overhead in the trees by the field. Lani let out a soft sigh...just as the basket gave a little jump.
"Oh!" she cried, jolted fully awake now. "Basil! Basil, come quick!"

Basil never was far from his mate's side. At her cries, Basil surged forward. For a moment, thinking that perhaps they were under attack. Thoughts of battle however quickly disappeared as the basket his mate carefully guarded, gave another jump.
Craning his neck down, Basil watched the basket quietly. A tender smile on crossing his face. It was time. Time to meet the newest member of his family. Wither it was a filly or a colt, Basil did not mind. Already having raised two boys, Basil was not new to the game of raising a child.

The basket wiggled, the lid's edge popping up, to reveal a dusky brown nose, soft as velvet, nostrils flared as the foal inside the chamber tested the scents. Then, slowly, the lid rose up, balanced on the head of a grulla-colored filly with a mane as purple as the flowers sprouting all around them. Pale champagne eyes blinked at the brightness of dawn, looking up at her father for the first time.
Then she turned her head, canting it to one side, to peer at her mother. She stuck her nose out and gave them both a soft whuffing sniff, breathing in their soft earthy scent, and without a moment's more hesitation, the lid popped off and the filly emerged on spindly legs, balanced precariously on two-colored hooves.
She knew nothing more than these were her parents--no ideas of stars and wishes flitted through the little girl's head--and arching her neck, she gave them both a bright smile. "Hi."

Lani's heart thundered, a galloping beat through her chest as she watched the basket lid rise. Part of her, a very large part of her, was afraid...afraid the baby wasn't theirs, that perhaps the Star made a mistake, or perhaps it wasn't the star at all, but an orphan. Not that she would love the baby any less--the gods had blessed her with another child, and that was all that mattered.
And when she saw the sleek, spindly form of a filly in shades of Basil's browns with her leg barring and soft dappled coat...she melted. "Oh, Basil..." she whispered, in awe of the new life in front of her. "She's beautiful. She's ours...we have a daughter!" she squealed, bobbing her head, bangs flopping.
Oh, a name, a name... She and Basil had named their sons together, but there was only one foal this time. Still, it meant nothing. She'd had a few names floating around her head since she found the basket...
"What about Rixton, for a name? We could call her Rixi..."
