They were mostly silent, except for the occasional softly spoken word, the casual remark. There really wasn't much for them to say. It was a lovely day and they were together; that was enough.

For The Killing Moon, there was also many thoughts crowding through his mind, but he cherished the peaceful, non-complicated nature of their relationship enough that adding his feelings to the moment seemed unnecessary. It was merely that ache again, anyway. In the grand scheme of things, it hadn't been that long at all since he had left his family but long enough that he felt the tug to return constantly. Even his newfound and cherished freedom from responsibility was not enough.

It would ease in time, he told himself, and for now at least he had Ember to keep him sane. Though it wouldn't be long until he bid her goodbye as well and he would seek out the dark corners of the Swamp alone.

The background birdsong finally intruded and the buck’s ears flicked forward, but not the gentle lulling tunes from before, no, this was something in pain. Fate, the wolf walking ahead, did the same. The great canine glanced backwards at the Kimeti and then spend up the pace, instinctively shifting into a predators stance.

When Killing Moon and Ember found the struggling bird, Fate was opening his jaws.

"Leave it," the buck ordered, without quite knowing why and the wolf instantly backed away.

I hope this works okay! <3

When she walked here with The Killing Moon, she let her mind wander, curling gently into the smoke of her dreams though her eyes were more lucid than they ever were. Her steps were firmer, less like she was walking on the clouds of dreams, and when she looked upon her companion she saw not just her dearest friend but also his inner discontent.

She said nothing though because if he wanted to speak on it, he would. It was not her place to drag unneeded words into the peace of their companionship. It was something that she had missed, but also something that she had never craved. She was used to being alone without feeling lonely.

When they came across the bird, Ember blinked, The Killing Moon's words barely registering as the blood sent her spiraling away into a place filled with smoke before she came back to herself with a shiver. She looked at her companion and wondered why he stopped his wolf. She was not a hunter, but he was. Prey was prey, regardless of it's state of distress. From the Swamp and to return to it one day, that was the way of life. She had accepted that enough since Walking on Fire began hunting for her, since Will Burn Again had suddenly snapped out of the water, jaws closing around prey and pulled it done for a meal even as it struggled.

She closed her eyes and her nose was filled with blood and she was cold yet warm at the same time. The same as the wounded wing that trickled life into the Swamp floor.

It was pointless to let it live.

The Killing Moon was a hunter. One life taken to sustain another; that was the way things were. Many beasts and birds had fallen to him in his quest to keep the tribe well-stocked and he had never thought twice about it. There was always respect for those whose lives were taken, but he wasn’t going to lose sleep over it, and that he would hesitate now and deny his wolf a meal spoke greatly to his inner turmoil.

The bird’s wing was clearly broken and it barely moved from its place in the dirt, choosing instead to use the last of its energy to give a pained wail every few minutes. If it didn't die now, it would die later. Unless he spent days nursing it back to health, a most unappealing suggestion, it was nothing but still breathing food. Ending it now would be a mercy.

Yet he still hesitated.

Yeah, he's just in his own little world atm

Smoldering Reverie watched her companion for a few silent moments before moving forward towards the bird, side brushing gently against his and a quick nuzzle of her nose against his cheek. She stood in front of the bird for a second before leaning down to nose at it's wing, finding the place where ragged bone broke skin. The bird trilled in fear and pain, causing her to close her eyes for a second before humming softly, trying to hush the bird.

When she pulled away, there was a small smear of blood on her nose. She left it there, letting it filter the scents of the Swamp. When she stared down at the bird, she stared with the eyes of her caiman, strange and distance, patient beyond knowing and so still. It was a gaze she found comforting, but for an injured bird, there was no comfort in a larger creature bearing down on it, but she didn't know what to do.

She turned back to look at the immobilized Killing Moon. He had been the one to halt it's death, so she felt it was only right that he choose where to go from here, "What should we do?"

"It’s not what we should do that’s the problem," The Killing Moon answered, his gaze never leaving the wounded bird, "I know exactly what we should do."

He looked towards Ember, with the blood on her nose and her eyes distant, like the still-pool that reflected your face and gave nothing away of what was within. There was probably something here, in this moment. If he studied it carefully, he could look deeply into himself and deal with whatever errant emotion was running rampant across his heart.

The bird forced itself upright, hopped a few paces and then stopped again, its little chest struggling with the rapid breaths.

He sighed, stepping towards Smoldering Reverie and casually licking the blood off her nose.

"Take it," he said.

The wolf surged forward and the bird was gone with one last squawk and a shower of feathers.

She didn't need to watch Fate eat the bird, it wasn't necessarily. The rush of feathers, the squawk, the fate crunch of bones, they were enough to know that it was done. She didn't feel sad for it though, all life was accompanied by death. She understood that well enough. One day, one day, her heart would burn it's way through her chest and reduce her to nothing but a smoldering memory of who she once was.

Not today, no, but one day. She could feel it. Feel her heart burning so carefully against the ashen bones that caged it in, the smoke in her veins, the crackling of its fire sparking against her mind. And she didn't mind. The thought of it didn't bother her. It was comforting.

As comforting as The Killing Moon's presence had always been and, she suspected, as it always would be. Easy and simple in a way that learning to live had never been. She smiled faintly, if a little sad, before pressing her head to his neck, fitting her head against the curve of his neck, trying to ease his turmoil. It was always she who had found it difficult to articulate anything, to make peace with living, and now, now when she knew how to be awake, he found himself lost in his thoughts, caught by something she didn't think he understood yet.

He said nothing, but the way he shifted against her touch, seeking more contact, was all either of them needed. He found solace in her silent offering and her friendship was enough to soft quaver of… what was it? Terror perhaps. The last tug of home, his foalhood self giving its last whimper just like the bird. It wasn’t as if he would never return, but leaving his family behind, knowing the seasons would turn and with them his children would grow knowing nothing of him but what they had been told.

It was the regret. Yes, that was it. Ah, now it made sense.

There was probably more, but he could take his time working through each emotion. But the first thing he must do was go further, deeper into the unknown. It was time to leave Ember behind as well. Echo and Fate would still follow at his heels, but they were as part him now.

"I am well, don’t worry, but it’s time we parted. It will be a long time until I see you again," The Killing Moon murmured softly.

You get a comma and you get a comma! Commas for everyone!

She nodded, not a sound except the whisper of her cheek against his neck. She had known that they would soon part. He had always had his family, and her when she was there, but there were things that he could not resolve while they walked by his side. For her, it was the opposite, always alone, it had taken him, and by extension his family, for her to resolve what had unknowingly plagued her.

And for that, the reversal must also extend to their good bye. It had always been Ember who felt the smoke tug her away, pulling her back into the land of dreams and waking unreality, telling her to say good bye and walk away. She was the one who had always taken the steps that led her into the unknown as he stood, somewhere familiar, watching her go. This time, it would be The Killing Moon's turn to walk away.

She was not sad even though they were parting once again. They always found their way back to each other and she knew with as much certainty as she knew of the fire that was her heart, that though their journeys left them changed, their friendship would remain.

So she breathed there, head tucked under his, companionable and silent, waiting patiently until he was ready to make the final step into the unknown.

<3 Ahhhh, I had figured that this was where this rp was leading!
Could we do an rp where he tells her that he's going on the journey and the initial setting off? I have this set after some stuff I haven't rp'd yet/finished rping and so would kind of like to flesh out the changes a little bit more.

He was in no rush to end the moment, so let it stay as it was, felt her breath against his skin warm every other part of his body. She chased away the last of his doubt with nothing but her trusting nod. They would part but they would see each other again, just as he would see his family again. This new path was simply diverging, winding away from the life he had known. It was only when the ever-patient Echo came to brush against his legs that he finally stepped away.

The Killing Moon gave one final nod, tossed his head back and was gone. The Eaglehound and Wolf raced after him, and later, a jellyfish drifted idly by.

Amorpheous
Yeah, I kinda dropped that one on you, sorry. xD It felt right with his last post. And of course we can do an RP like that! 8D

When The Killing Moon finally pulled away, Smoldering Reverie smiled at him, eyes ash-soft and ready for this inevitable departure. She nodded when he did and watched him go, chasing whatever answers he was looking for out in the unknown. Echo and Fate chased his ankles, faithful shadows.

Finally, when her own companions came to rest by her side, she whispered "Good bye."

And she turned away, to her own, familiar unknown as the jellyfish drifted by.

And there we are! Killing Moon is now on the journey alone!
