When Babylon told her that he had found a new Mercury knight in need of training, the last person in the world that Europa had expected him to show up with had been Anabel Au. While she knew Anabel well and liked her just plenty, when you were picking teammates for a war against the massing forces of evil, the girl missing half her internal organs was always going to be your last choice. Like, that was not any kind of character judgement against Anabel, it was just a fact.

But Mistral was new to the fight and needed someone to show her the ropes, and Europa had always had a soft spot for the confused and inexperienced. The page couldn't be left to patrol alone - she was, as Babylon had made clear, basically helpless, in need of not only guidance but protection...

Seriously, if you really wanted Europa's opinion, the universe was playing a cruel joke by making Anabel Au a knight. But damn if they weren't going to make the best of that cruel joke.

"Okay," she said brightly to Mistral, as they walked through the alley behind one of DCU's dining halls. "We're just going to do some easy jumps, okay? You should be able to jump about one story at a time vertically."

Mistral knew exactly how much of a joke her magical powers were. She did not need the (somewhat condescending) attitude of Europa (Tallulah Cowden was a magical girl?! What the hell!) to tell her that. Still, she had to do something with it. Even if she swore to never reach out for that dark ring again, she was never, ever going to get away from it. It hummed there in the back of her mind all the time. It demanded attention when she had none to give. She'd gotten yelled at twice at work for zoning out and thinking of that weird… thing… she would ask Babylon about it. She definitely didn't know why she'd ever want to swear her power to Mistral? Wasn't Mistral her name?

"T--Europa," said Mistral, looking up at the building. "I am twenty-three years old." She took a deep breath and made a face. "I feel ridiculous," she said to herself. But she walked with Europa, trying not to be too obviously cold or tired or anything. Because it was a surety that the best way to get Europa to take off the kid gloves would be to, you know, prove she didn't need to wear them to handle Mistral. "So, what building am I scaling in a single bound today?

There had been a tip that the guy Ariel Mishnah was looking for was friends with a student on campus. His mother had been the one to tell her and had even provided the room said friend was forming in. That was the primary reason the bounty hunter was here, but even if the lead proved fruitless in her search for the bond jumper, drunken frat boys made perfect targets for a lieutenant with a nice body.

Pacing down the sidewalk in her brown, heeled boots and tight fitting jeans, Ariel let her eyes wander the area. It was something of a habit... There was always the chance the man you were looking for was nearby, and if he caught sight of you before you saw him, he'd have that much more of a lead when he broke and ran. Granted, Ariel was quick, but that didn't mean she enjoyed chasing the assholes down. Easier if you saw them first and could get the jump on them.

This habitual need to take stock of the area is what brought her eyes to the alley and she frowned a little at the two girls moving away from her. There was something... Subtly off about them and those brown boots angled to take her closer with out appearing as though she were headed towards them. Her eyes kept a watch on the pair, but subtly, in case one of them noticed her.

Maybe it was the trailing ribbons or the blue glow, but the longer she watched, the more Ariel was sure that at least one of them was a senshi, especially when she was close enough to make out white wings. The other was... A knight maybe? She hadn't met many of those, but in the prescience of a senshi... There wasn't much question.

So, a new question ... What was the pair doing here? And, could she afford to go on the offensive here? Their starseeds would be valuable prizes... Ariel's lips curved in a smile and she adjusted her steps, keeping them casual.

Europa made a small note to herself that she needed to treat Mistral like an adult, and not one of those scared sixteen-year-olds she'd spent plenty of time tutoring in the past. She pointed to the roof of the dining hall, which she had selected for its relative lowness and flatness. "This one, to start," she said, trying to make her tone sound less patronizing. She wanted to see how much Anabel's civilian difficulties carried over into her powered form, whether the usual suite of superpowers would be dampened by her injuries.

She made the jump first, taking a few quick steps and then leaping, avoiding the temptation to add a flip or anything fancy - although that was some of the thrill of senshidom to her, and then turned to wait for Mistral to follow.

She could see someone standing at the far end of the alley, but given the low light, couldn't be sure who it was. She didn't sense chaos, so it was likely a civilian. Europa frowned and shook her head slightly. She didn't like being seen - it put civilians at risk - but so far tonight had seemed quiet.

"How did that feel?" she asked Mistral, turning her attention back to the page who had just landed beside her. "Okay?"

Mistral's first building hop went… mostly as planned. She landed with a huff and almost dropped to the ground, but she totally made it, and that was what mattered. Right? Right. Europa had made the jump with ease, but Europa had also--to Mistral's understanding--been a senshi for about 30 bajillion years longer than Mistral had even known senshi were a thing. So really, it could just be an experience gap. "Yeah, fine," she said. "So, can I talk to you about this glowing s**t? Only I think you're doing it too, and I wanted to know, is it normal?"

When in doubt, ask a lot of questions and hound people until you get answers.

"Babylon says people like us attract trouble," she said. "So, like, what kind of trouble? Weird gang trouble obviously, but can you exposit more than monsters from crypto class trouble?"

If there had been some question about the two girls being powered, the answer was apparent when first one and then the other jumped from the ground to the top of the building before them. No human could do that, so they were obviously not. So the new question became... what was she going to do about it?

Ariel sidled close to the brick wall and slowed her steps, a frown pulling her dark eyebrows together in thought. There were two, which put her at a little bit of a disadvantage... even if she knew how to handle to people, she rather preferred to have things to her advantage rather than theirs. So... maybe rather than rushing in, she should get them to come to her.

A smile spread over Ariel's lips as she glanced about, making sure there was no one to see what she was about to do. Sticking to the shadows, the tall woman was suddenly different between one step and the next. Heels still thumped the concrete, but now her boots were black and red and her jeans had become sleek black leather. The tank top she had worn was now a stiff corset hugging her torso as Cinnabar picked out a place to set up her trap.

There... the verge along the side of the road was free of buildings, carefully landscaped, but lined with thick, tall trees. They cast the shadows that would benefit her ambush, giving her something to hide behind until she was ready. Slipping into the shadow of one of the trees, the lieutenant pressed her back to the rough back and made herself as small as possible, drawing a deep breath that lifted her chest against her corset.

Putting her lungs into it and as much fear as she could muster, Cinnabar screamed as she threw back her head. Hopefully, the sound, along with the signature she was giving off now, would help draw her prey to where she wanted them to be. Waiting a few minutes, she drew breath and screamed again, letting the sound strangle off in a sob.

Come on, my pretties...

The scream shattered the night's stillness, and Europa whipped her head around. She could sense a chaos signature now - low level, but present where there hadn't been one before, and not being able to sense civilians didn't mean they weren't there. After all - who had screamed, if not a civilian? While this could have been a trap - where had the signature come from - she couldn't afford to be wrong and let an innocent civilian die for her mistake.

"We need to check that out," she said to Mistral. "You take care of the civilian, I'll go after the lieutenant."

Normally she would have run faster, but tonight Europa slowed her pace to be sure that Mistral could keep up with her. Nearing the source of the noise, Europa gestured for Mistral to follow and hopped down from the roof and crossed the road, towards the heavily-landscaped green space on the other side.

Looking around, she scanned the area for the imperiled civilian, who had to be here somewhere, right? Along with that chaos signature that she could sense but not see- "Watch out," she warned Mistral. "Something's not quite right."

She followed Europa, fretting--though she'd never say it--that she might be causing the Eternal to go too slowly to save the civilian in danger. It wouldn't be the first time her physical limitations had, well, limited her. While she could stand without appreciable effort for longer as a Page than she could as a civilian, she didn't think she was up for any kind of combat.

When Europa stopped, Mistral did too, balling her hands into cautious fists like that would help anything at all. "Yeah, no kidding," she said, "What's that… do you feel that?" It was a sensation like all her skin was literally inching down her body, like she was going to split open and be nothing but muscle and sinew. Something was deeply, deeply wrong nearby, and Mistral could no more articulate what it was than she could sprout wings and begin to fly.

"Maybe we should try to get in contact with Babylon," said Mistral, falling back on literally the only other powered person she knew.

She could feel them getting closer... their signatures moved as they did and when she closed her eyes she could almost see the glow of them, taste that sickly sweet sensation on the tip of her tongue. It made her want to spit... she dislike sweets normally anyway, it was annoying that all their signatures felt like this. It made her want a cigarette to kill the taste, or maybe a bit of wasabi... but that was tangential. Pulling herself back to the situation at hand, the lieutenant assessed the power levels she was facing once more and sorted through various tactics.

Straight on was out, she'd already decided that with this little scheme. They had stopped back a bit, clever girls, so the sneak attack wasn't going to work so well now. There being two of them was problematic... but maybe this didn't need to be as serious as she was making it out to be. A smile slid over Cinnabar's lips as she considered it. No need to make killing them the end goal. Maybe she could settle for roughing them up some... sounded like fun. If she got the opportunity she wasn't going to pass it up, but she could settle.

Sliding down the trunk of the tree, the lieutenant hefted a palm sized rock as she eased herself into a crouch, all her muscles tensed... and she pitched the rock into the brush behind her a good distance from her current hiding spot, hoping the sudden noise would draw attention away from her as she abruptly broke from cover and darted towards the stronger of the two signatures. She was the one to take out first, as the second would be then easier to deal with.

As she came around the tree, Cinnabar took stock of what she could see as she ran... senshi for sure, one with wings, and a girl in furs and pigtails. Hoping they'd see her too late, the dark haired woman let practiced hands snap forward in vicious blows, her training flowing out through her hands to deal the most pain and damage as quickly as she could before she swept her leg out in an attempt to knock down the eternal. Once down, maybe a starseed snatch was in order... it was hard to defend against someone reaching INTO your chest...

Europa was beginning to suspect there'd never been a civilian at all. The tree band was too convenient a spot for an ambush, too awkward a place to walk at night if you weren't up to no good to begin with. Her attention went towards the rustling in the bushes a few yards away, but - no chaos signature. No. It was closer. Much closer. Where, exactly?

"Watch out," Europa warned Mistral, and the first blow hit her in the small of her back. The senshi yelped with pain and leaped slightly from shock. She began to turn, but the lieutenant - she assumed lieutenant, the signature wasn't strong enough for a captain - had already begin to sweep her legs out from under her. Europa fell backwards, and caught herself on her elbows with a grunt.

The lieutenant was crafty, she'd give her that. Europa hadn't recognized her trap until she and Mistral were in the thick of it and that seldom happened. But just because she was down didn't mean she was going to let some rookie go and get her hands on her starseed. Europa lashed out with a kick, aiming for the woman's torso.

"Oh no you don't," she said through clenched teeth. Her starseed was going to stay in her chest where it belonged tonight.

Watch out? Okay. Yes. Watching out. Mistral lurched backwards when something rushed out from behind her, stumbling backwards onto some rocks and roots. Which, great, because she needed jarring pain in her abdominal muscles. The best thing to do here, she knew, would be to clear out, but, uh. No? If she was going to have to do this whole knight thing, she was going to be a mature adult about it and give it her best. Mistral groped for something, anything, to use as a projectile. She picked up the first rock she grabbed, and threw it sharply at the Lieutenant. At least her hand-fishing practice would come in a little bit of useful here.

How come she didn't get a flaily lantern, a la Babylon? Ugh!

The senshi fell and Cinnabar grinned as she lifted a booted foot to deliver a vicious kick to her midsection... except the senshi was fighting back and her strike turned into a dodge, forcing her to lean back to let the flailing feet pass her by. At least that afforded her an opportunity... trained hands snapping to try and snag the senshi by her ankle. That would give her the perfect hold from which to control the struggling girl, maybe get her pinned properly... or maybe just snap that thin ankle in her hands and leave her nicely crippled.

"Oh, no?" Cin laughed at the prostrate senshi, completely enjoying this little exercise so far. "And you're going to stop me? Or is your little friend going to do it? She looks like she'd faint if I shouted BOO at her."

Or she had... the rock that came winging her way spoke differently, clipping her shoulder painfully. Not enough to wound or even bruise terribly, but it was momentarily distracting, and annoying.

"Don't worry sweet heart, you're next. I wouldn't forget about you." She tossed back, hauling back to aim a kick at the senshi's side.

Europa rolled away from the kick, springing up to her knees with practiced grace. It was more important to get Mistral out of here than to defeat this lieutenant, she thought, flinging her hand forward. "Europa deep ocean pressure!" she yelled, channeling her most basic attack at the lieutenant. That, she thought, would buy them some time.

"Okay, come on," she said, grabbing Mistral in a bridal carry - she'd deal with her friend's bruised ego later. "Let's get out of here and live to fight another day."

Page steadily balanced in her arms, Europa leapt away from the paralyzed officer, towards the safety and anonymity of campus. It would be easy to disappear there;.

Europa Deep Ocean Pressure
Sailor Europa singles out a target by pointing to them, and calls the name of her attack. The target is overtaken by a sensation of tremendous pressure, making movement nearly impossible, as well as causing momentary dizziness and shortness of breath. The effects wear off after fifteen seconds.

Mistral wanted to punch the s**t out of the lieutenant, seriously, she was going to do it. She was going to kill the s**t out of her. But before she could put action to words--she would not faint if someone shouted boo at her--she was grabbed up in Europa's arms. The senshi was about four hundred times stronger than Mistral would have given her credit for.

Later, she'd think that Europa was right to haul her out of there. At the moment, though, resentment boiled deep in her stomach.

She was not a fragile princess. Or at least, not as fragile as Europa seemed to think.

Up and away the senshi rolled, the lieutenant following with the full intention of doing as much damage as possible... before a flung hand signaled the sudden onslaught of pressure so thick it froze Cinnabar in her tracks.

A fierce snarl curled over the woman's lips as she glared at the senshi, straining against the pressure as a fizzle of nerves at their way through her. Trapped... she couldn't move... and that was deadly dangerous when one was facing an opponent two steps up from your rank. This could go very, very badly, and unlike that time with the blonde senshi, she was going to be fully awake to see every moment of her coming death... but then, fortune smiled and the senshi passed over the opportunity afforded by her sudden weakness to instead make good on a retreat.

Cinnabar watched as the senshi scooped up her friend and fled the scene, leaving her trapped for the few breaths it took the magic, or whatever it was, to release her. Stumbling forward, the lieutenant cursed sharply and shook herself all over, stretching limbs now freed to move as normal. <******** senshi... You and your friend, I've got my eye out for you now.

Her prey gone, Cin turned sharply on her heel and stalked away, heading for the part of the campus she had originally been aiming for. ******** this noise... she was going to find that b*****d and beat the s**t out of him to assuage her annoyance. Maybe a starseed in her pocket would make her feel better... she could afford to lose one bounty to her pride.
