Leilani wasn't the least bit sure how to explain this to her father when she barely comprehended it herself. It had just been a bit of fun with Rhapsody and then...well...this. The pink stallion had asked her if she had eaten far too many sugarcubes and while those were her favorite treat she highly doubted they could do this! She had been supposed to meet Rhapsody's family and he had gone off to arrange it. In the interim that had left her to tell her father alone and she had been putting it off for months. Now with her belly hanging so low there wasn't any reasonable way to hide it. The only way she had managed up until now was to make her visits home less frequent.
She approached their meeting place and stopped at the edge to peek through the trees. Her father was already there of course. Colonel was nearly always on time. Well, here goes nothing! "Hello Papa."
Colonel turned when he heard his daughter's voice. It seemed a bit more subdued than usual, but perhaps she had traveled farther to meet him today. Leilani had branched out on her own more and more since she had gotten older, making friends and building her own life. He hoped to hear about some of her adventures and the new friends she had made, but what he wasn't really prepared for was the sight that greeted him. His baby girl heavily pregnant with foals of her own. "Leilani..."
The mare had indeed been winded, but not for the reasons her father thought she was. She stepped out as he started to speak. There was a question in his greeting and she knew exactly what it was. "Yes, Papa. I've foals coming." Not the answer to the unasked question, but she felt the need to say it aloud. In some small part of her mind it had not been true until that moment and the recognition of her situation made her belly feel that much heavier. "The father is a friend, a stallion named Rhapsody."
Not a friend of hers he knew of, but he had to trust in his daughter's judgement on the matter of the father. It was a little too late to do otherwise. He trotted over and nuzzled his daughters muzzle. "As long as you are well." What he really meant is- as long as that stallion did not hurt you. The curiosity and needs of youth were something he well understood so he did not fault his daughter for that.
"Well as can be expected, I think anyway." Mostly it was discomfort and appetite.
"They will come before long from the looks of you." Truthfully he did not have much experience with his, other than with Daisy. "Once they come two legger shamans make baskets that can keep them safe until they are ready." That was how it had been with Leilani and her siblings. Two or three foals was rough on a mare's body, or so the soquili that belonged to the shaman had told him. Birthing them a little early ensured healthy foals and a healthy mother.
"Can I stay with you until they come?" Probably a silly question; Truthfully, she did not feel up to traveling back to her regular sanctuary and probably would not for some time yet.
"Of course." It was indeed a silly question. "I will do whatever I can for you and my grandfoals. Niyol will be pleased to see you again too." She had no seen his two legger in some time, but the man was always open to company. Leilani had been the human's favorite of his foals when she was young, he had doted on her and given her the feathers and the dreamcatcher that she still wore.
Colonel turned about and made a motion with his head. "Come on. It's a bit of a walk home." If they started now then they could be back in the village before dark, even if they needed to pace themselves because of Leilani's condition. At least the extended time would give them the opportunity to catch up.
"I look forward to seeing him too." Her time spent with Niyol were all fond memories. "Alright. I'm coming...quick as I can anyway."
