Europa took a different route for patrol that night, a long, meandering loop around the city that took her through an industrial district she hardly ever frequented. It had rained recently, or else she imagined smoke would have still hung in the air, even weeks after the incident. The news had called it an arson, and she supposed that was true from a certain point of view. The fire had been set deliberately--

--But nothing else about the end of the battle had gone according to plan.

She picked her way through the sagging police tape and skirted around the edge of the rubble pile. Demolition had already begun - bulldozers lurked around the edges of the lot, silent in their mechanical slumber. Staring across the ash, Europa pondered Wolframite's fate. Gunn had told her not to trust the general, that the whole battle had likely been a trap meant to turn against the senshi, and not against the DMC as it had been proposed - yet Gunn hadn't been there, hadn't seen that Wolframite made certain that every senshi and knight made it out of the fire, that he had stayed behind, that he had faced Zinkenite-

Had she made it out? He he had the strength left to teleport? There had been bodies in the rubble, she thought, and knew at least one of them was the dark mirror senshi whose starseed was Zirconia's latest science project. Was the other Wolframite?

She sighed, rubbing her arms. He wouldn't be her ally, not now that the operation had gone sour - but she wanted to know what had happened to him.

It had rained and all the ash and soot was washed down the drain, but the twisted metal and charred walls still remained. The place looked different without all the commotion. He had selected this place because it was out of the way and the windows too high up but enough to fuel a fire. He knew what he could do to this place and had, and he had selected it as the stage for his presumed victory.

He sat inside the operator’s seat of a small bulldozer that was half inside the building, having sat where when the rain started and finished, and watched it drag out little piles of ash with it. Now that it was clear, he leaned back and continued to eat from the bag of snickerdoodle cookies he had bought from one of the many bakeries he loved. He couldn’t do much in the way of fighting these days and he was using this time away from it all – recovering in his own way.

Miserating in another.

He felt the signature and wondered what she would even think of his. He was ready to open the passenger’s side door and leave if it had been anyone he didn’t want to talk to (which were many), but saw it was someone he wasn’t sure he wanted to see.

But she was here, and he felt she came for the same reasons he had. To think of that day and how it all went horribly wrong. To absorb thoughts and to question things.

He opened the door to the passenger’s side and from where he sat, looked across the place over to her. “I see you are alright, Europa.” He said, to which was a stark contrast to how he was. It was further proof that the senshi had all the freedom and lack of leadership that the world could give.

He felt bitter.

Hearing the door to the bulldozer open, Europa looked towards the noise. She saw Wolframite only moments before he spoke, and nodded to his statement. "Thanks to you," she said, approaching carefully. Even in the dim light, she could see that his face was marred by an ugly burn, that his uniform lacked the gravitas and grandeur she expected of generals.

"Did you," she said, trying to figure out how to word it properly. What she thought had happened was he'd gotten a demotion, because, of course, his uniform looked like the outfit he'd been wearing when they first met, well over four years ago now, but she wasn't even sure that was possible. There were no demotions among Order. No one could take your power once you'd earned it. She didn't want to guess and be wrong, and it was such an alien concept, but-

"Did you get a demotion?" she asked, trying to steer her voice more towards polite inquiry than disbelief. She thought she succeeded. She hoped she succeeded.

"I suppose Zinkenite must have been beyond furious," continued Europa, frowning. Gunn's assertion that the whole operation had been a trap for the white moon seemed less likely by the second - why go through all this trouble? No, the opposition had been earnest in its intents. And their failure had been real, too, not some cleanly-machined performance. "I'm glad to see you alive. I'd assumed the worst."

“Doesn’t my aura tip you off?” He told her, letting that be his answer. It should have been obvious and he knew Europa was smarter than that.

He scooted back into the bulldozer to allow her a space to sit and placed the bag of cookies in his lap for the moment. He wasn’t exactly patrolling. Just in uniform and hiding out. “Saying our dear General-King was furious is the understatement of the year. ‘Disappointed’ was one he threw around a lot during my punishments. “He grabbed a cookie from the bag and set the bag next to him, gesturing for her to take one if she wanted.

“There are far worse things than death in the Negaverse, Europa. I have seen a few of them. I’ve seen it happen to people we considered Kings and Queens who seemed impossible to ever hard.” And now they weren’t here.

“And you? Still no order or anyone to answer to on your crazy side of the war?” He asked, looking her over. She seemed fine and in good health – at least compared to him. He couldn’t lift his one arm with the bandages wrapped around the burn and the cast on his arm. “Leto is making a slow recovery from what I hear.” He informed her. “Grapevine on our side.”

"What do you think is the chance she catches a cold and dies from the flu?" He said, giving a weak, tired smile at his wishful thinking before biting into the cookie.

She hadn't thought to check, but now that she did, Wolframite was unmistakably a lieutenant and she felt bad for having even had to ask. Well, aside from the whole having never realized that demotions were even possible - although she supposed it made sense, paramilitary organization and all. "You're right, it does," she said. "I'm sorry. It was a stupid question." She was supposed to be better than that. More observant.

She took a cookie, reasoning that if he was eating them they probably weren't poisoned, and she had yet to determine whether Wolframite harbored any ill will whatsoever towards her. Perhaps he didn't - but then, how could he not? If she'd just been thorough enough to crush Leto's throat, instead of merely suffocating her, perhaps she would have been beyond revival... the operation's failure rested squarely on Europa's shoulders.

"I got yelled at," she said, taking a seat beside him. "Apparently the ends never justify the means when the means are working with the Negaverse. So, like, I'm not supposed to play with you anymore. I agree with Zirconia, though. The dark mirror's a parasite. We need to wipe them out." Her thoughts drifted briefly to the strange, mirror-coated starseed, and what its strange form might mean for the future of the war. "Beyond that, no, no consequences. But that means there's no punishment waiting for those traitors who sided with the dark mirror." She doubted any of them had awoken before Ares's fall. She doubted any of them knew the Dark Mirror's true origins or intent.

Europa snorted at the thought of Leto, done in by nothing more sinister than a seasonal bug. "I would drink to that," she said, "If I had anything to drink." About the cookie, she added, "These are fantastic. Where did you get them?"

“No. It’s fine.” He leaned back, looking out through the rain-speckled glass to the rolling clouds outside. “It doesn’t happen that often.” In fact, he really only heard it being done once, but maybe there were a few other cases. The fact still remained that it was a practice still exercised, through rarely. As Zink had been so kind to remind him, it was usually easier and more fitting to kill the officer than to give traitors another chance.

“But I’m alive.” It was really the only thing he could say about his situation. He was alive and he had Billy. Those were the only real positives in his life. The rest all went downhill from there.

As Europa went to mention Leto and the need to still get rid of them, he felt his stomach twist. “You’ll have to fight the good fight on your own. I’m under very heavy surveillance. I so much as take a wrong step and there are 2 officers ready to tell Zink about it.” He said, referring to the General-King by his shortened officer name.

“I’m also a liability to you know. If you have any plans, it’s best not to tell me.” He looked over to her, wondering if he should even tell her that he was now collared and could be called to Leto at any moment. He was hers for the time being, and that meant she could play whatever games she wanted with him.

He decided, considering their mutual hate for the woman, he would leave that detail out for now. “I can only wish you the best of luck.” And hope he wasn’t there when Europa did fight Leto again else he would be forced to defend the woman he hated.

Reaching down, he picked out a bottle and offered it to her. It was one of those tiny bottles found in hotel rooms, and he had a small box of them on the floor. A few were empty already. “Don’t tell anyone. Someone I know wouldn’t be happy to see me drinking here.” Or drinking at all, but even he felt that Billy would understand.

He picked out one from the little box, this one vodka, and twisted the cap. Onced free, he held the end out for her to tap with her own bottle. “So…the toast. Best of luck to the universe in killing Leto in one way or another soon……since we’re not getting to it.” He said, bottle drooping a little as he continued to depress himself.

Sitting in the bulldozer cab beside Wolframite and watching the rain pick up again on the glass felt reminiscent of her younger days, when she was a beginner senshi reveling in the freedom that came with magical powers and running around after dark. Europa was too old and too experienced to engage in that sort of delinquency anymore, but one night - she could spare one night. After all, she'd been busy lately, and Wolframite looked worse for the wear and even if they were technically enemies, she couldn't help but pity him.

So, she took the miniature bottle of vodka and unscrewed the cap. "Yes," she agreed, clinking it to his. "To Leto's health: May it deteriorate quickly." Europa downed the bottle quickly, feeling the burn of the alcohol - there was a reason she preferred cocktails over shots. The lieutenant by her side seemed depressed, and she couldn't blame him - she felt pretty dismal herself - but at the very least, she could try to be optimistic about a virus finishing what they'd started.

And if not, well, she'd get another chance. Hopefully. And when she did, she'd be ready.

"Are your monitors watching you right now?" she asked quietly, trying to see if she could sense them. If they were, then this could well be a trap, she realized belatedly. "Will you get in trouble for talking to me?"

She would probably get in trouble for talking to him. Assuming anyone found out. Which they would not.

“No. My new team isn’t around. I’d sense them if they did and wouldn't have called you over.” He said, finishing the little bottle in one gulp and wincing. He hated hard liquor. Setting it on the ground, he reached around for another little bottle and sighed. He hated himself for drinking in front of her, but he knew he just couldn't handle the aftermath of their operation lightly. It just seemed appropriate to drink, since that’s what most people said to do after having a bad day – and he had had a very, very bad few days.

“I honestly don’t know what they could do if I did get in trouble. There isn’t a rank lower than lieutenant as far as I know. Then again, Zink has introduced me to some rather annoying magic last time we met.” The collar was a pain in the a**, and he was glad the high collar of his uniform hid it.

Watching the rain, he looked back at her. “Why did you come here?" The place was a failure of a plan. It wasn't exactly somewhere you wanted to hang to feel better.

Speaking of. "Why are you even talking to me? Don't you get in trouble for this sort of thing? From whoever yelled at you. We're not on a shared mission anymore, Europa." He took the bottle and looked at it. "We're right back where we started from now." Back to just being an officer and a senshi.

Europa would have preferred wine coolers or hard lemonades, and she didn't go for another of the little bottles - where had Wolframite even gotten so many, and why not just buy an actual full-sized bottle of vodka? She wasn't actually sure she wanted to know. This was the Negaverse she was dealing with, after all. The answer was just as likely to be unsavory as it was to be totally mundane.

"I guess he's above killing you or turning you into a youma, then," the senshi suggested lowly, in response to Wolframite's comment about ranks lower than lieutenant. Then again, both those results were rather permanent, and Zinkenite probably still had some use left for Wolframite. Traitor or not, enemy or not, Europa could recognize competence.

His next question gave her pause - why had she come here, exactly? Had sentimentality driven her here? "I don't know," she shrugged. "I guess I just kind of wanted to check things out." Really, part of her had been looking for some kind of confirmation about whether Wolframite was still alive, but that seemed like an odd thing to admit. She'd gotten her answer, and now she was done with it. They were not going to be [i[friends.

"I won't get in trouble if she doesn't find out," she said, and had zero plans to tell Gunn about this encounter. "The funny thing about Order is you're pretty much free to mix and mingle with whoever you like. Maybe you should try it sometime." Which was probably a dangerous suggestion to make. "But if we're back to being bitter enemies then we're back to being bitter enemies. For what it's worth, I'm a little bit sorry about hanging you from a flagpole way back when."

But only a little bit.

It had been hilarious. (It was still hilarious.)

“He could be, or maybe he didn't want to see anyone else taken over by a youma. We’re already lost someone to that tragedy of a transformation.” Though he wondered if Zink was even above that and would have changed him if he felt he wasn't worth it anymore. So far, the only thing keeping him alive and human was Zink’s feeling on that he could be set right and was more useful as a person and not a monster.

He could only smile as she continued. “Mingling. I think mingling is why I got punished, don’t you think, Europa?” He turned his head to look at her before looking back out the window pane at the falling rain. “My time with the Order side wasn't to be friends with them. Don’t get me wrong, I am fine with you as far as we hate Leto, but in a fight……” He wasn't so sure. “I’m still loyal to my side, despite it being different from when I first began. I also don’t like a lot of the senshi on your side. I can’t be having tea parties with them and still call myself a defender of Earth.” He finished the little bottle and didn't reach for another.

“I’d say come to our side, but you have more a chance destroying Leto than I have.”

Then she brought up a very old memory, and he had to take a moment before he smiled. “Oh wow. That’s a long time back. I was…” He set a hand to his head, trying to even think of how far back that had been. How long had he even been in uniform? “I didn't even know how to use my weapon back then.” He was so pathetic when he was a rookie. It was a miracle he even made it to captain.

At the memory, he held out his hand and in it materialized the familiar jump rope. He plopped it on her lap. “You were rather good at tying knots, I have to say.”

"I owe you back for that." He warned her.

"No, I don't think that," Europa replied, mildly frustrated with herself for seeming so flippant when she wasn't. Inappropriate wording was going to be the death of her one day. She thought he was punished for planning an operation that flew in the face of his commanding officers' and organization's priorities and being caught in the act - but she did not say so. Instead, she bit her tongue and reached for another cookie.

At least he understood that she could be more effective in accomplishing their mutual goal from her side than she would be from his. "Chances are, if I came to your side, I'd forget why I want to destroy Leto in the first place," she said. considering her experiences with memory loss lately. Would Europa - corrupt Europa - want Leto dead if she couldn't ever remember ever being Tallulah? If she couldn't remember the pain Leto's corruption had caused to her and her family? It was chilling to consider - who would she be, if she wasn't Tallulah?

Maybe that was why Avalon was so unhinged.

She turned the jumprope over in her hands, considering. "I think that was mostly Libra's expertise," she said, momentarily missing the zodiac. Libra had been smart. She'd had a good viewpoint, one that Europa wished was still around.

"But yes," she agreed. "One of these days you'll get me back for that." But probably not right now, because she had a distinct height and power advantage and he looked like he was in no shape to be fighting.

She twisted the handle of the jumprope in her hand, pondering whether it was made of the same matter as Wolframite's knives and had simply been transmuted, or if it was a different object entirely. "Do you know a general named Avalon?" she asked.

“Yeah, the memory loss is the big problem with side changes. I guess it makes it easier to turn against someone who used to be a friend or someone close and personal to you without feeling a single thing for them. Tragic is what it really is. Just imagine killing a friend and then remembering them after?” He shrugged. “It keeps our senshi from being spies though. Guess it’s a mixed bag. I honestly don’t even talk to your side when they come over to ours.” It just seemed weird to him, and he didn’t think he could ever trust them fully.

As she played with the rope, he glanced over at her question. “Avalon?” He tried to think of the name. “I don’t think we’re ever met. Why? Did this general do something to you?” If so, he wasn’t about to share information for her to get back at this person.

Europa wasn't really sure why she'd brought up Avalon, given that his response was fairly predictable - Wolframite might have been her ally for a time, but it would be foolish and sentimental to consider him a friend. So she did her best to divorce herself from the situation, despite the fact that the general's threats weighed heavily upon her. "She was a knight," she shrugged. "She corrupted and now she's a general. I was just wondering if you'd come across her."

Admitting the details to him would be pointless. It would make her weak, compromise her civilian identity - two of the last things she wanted to do tonight.

"I should get going," she sighed. "I'm sorry that the operation failed the way it did, but I'm going to keep trying to find a way to kill Leto. When I do, you'll know, because she'll be dead. And I'm glad to see you alive, strange as it probably sounds." She would have hated to have his death, in addition to their failure, on her conscience.

She handed the rope back to him.

"Good night, Wolframite," said Europa, climbing down from the cab.

"Is she a friend? This Avalon? I could speak to her to find out who she is." He said, watching her climb down out of the cab.

As he did, a more important thought crossed his mind, and he turned to look down at her. "Europa, wait." He moved to scoot and look down at her.

"When you go to kill Leto. If, for any reason, I stand as an obstacle in your path to killing her for good..." He looked dead into her eyes. "..don't hesitate." If he was forced to be around Leto and if he was ever placed in her way, he wanted to be sure Europa would not hold past sympathies over this mission to keep her from making the shot.

He wanted her to succeed.

Europa shook her head. "No," she said, "Avalon wasn't my friend. We have mutual acquaintances, that's all." What would Wolframite do, if she told him what was going on? He was a lieutenant now, and marked traitor, and above all, he was not her friend. Chances were that if she told him, all that would happen would he'd be press-ganged into harassing her further.

And that was just something she did not want to deal with.

She considered his last request for a moment, and then nodded seriously. "Got it," said Europa. "I would hope it doesn't come to that, but if it does - I won't hesitate."

She would hate to sacrifice him towards their mutual goal, but - if he was a willing martyr, then she would play that game. "Good night," she repeated. "For real this time. And best of luck to you." For whatever value of luck she wanted to wish upon her enemy. With a sigh, Europa headed off into the night.
