As we are a community of RPers, and that many of us have been RPing for years (not necessarily in wrestling, but in general), I figured a thread of tips would be helpful. If it doesn't take off, whatever, no harm done. That being the case, I'm not sure what kind of foot traffic the owner's guild has, and since this is the main hub for what we do...yeah.

So...if you've got HELPFUL (the emphasis!) advice, feel free to contribute.

Communicate. I don't mean make OOC posts in the thread, I mean actually talk to who you're facing. PMs, Skype, whatever. Talk to them, see what spots you two would like to do, and establish when you can both actively post at your best potential. Some of the greatest matches we could read have been spawned simply through great communication.

Win or lose, do it well. Don't go into it thinking "I HAVE to win. I GOTTA win. It will get me noticed," because that's not true. For example, in BBW, I noticed the likes of BadBoy and Celtic not because they both wanted to win, but because they put more effort into their match in a couple of days than most do in a few weeks. And it ended in a draw. Make it a good read, have fun, and you will get noticed with championship shots (if that's your goal).

Championships and Achievements. Don't focus on them. I know, you want them all. You wanna be successful. But if you focus on them, you're not gonna have fun. You're gonna be miserable.

Storylines. Do them, always put them first. I'm guilty of this, I love championships too. But a good storyline is so much more fun, and offers great character development that won't come half the time when it comes to championships.

Putting someone over. It's not a sin. Don't be afraid to take the fall. Trust me, having to decide a winner is much more stressful for a booker and probably more disappointing for you.

I can't stress this enough but I gotta just get it out there, it's one of the many things that really irks me about THOSE WHO SHALL NOT BE NAMED.

Learn how to pace yourself in a match

If youre working with someone who works more of a technical style and you're a brawler, mesh it together and make it work. If you're a spot monkey and you're going against someone who is a mat wrestler, make it work. But make these concepts work from early on in the match. You're supposed to illustrate the advantages one competitor will have over the other, and vice versa. And if you go for moves to build momentum like hip tosses, drop kicks, and German suplexes on page 1... Stop.

Another thing. Unless the feud calls for an increase in intensity, the heel should be getting more offense in early on in the match, so the face can mount back a comeback, build momentum, and face adversity. However, with two similar styles, that rule need not apply. Two great technical wrestlers are going to go back and fourth in their mat wrestling and holds, two brawlers are going to practically box one another early on, two high-flyers are going to counter one another's speed and versatility at the start of the match, and so on and so fourth. Not that this is THE formula to follow, but it makes for better story-telling

Honestly? My advice is something that could help the whole of the internet. Lurk. Learn how things are done. Read a few posts before jumping in head-first and making an a** of yourself.

Every guild has rules. Read them. Every guild has a list of champions. Check a few of their matches. Look at things. Read them. Learn.

We're all guilty of being idiots from time to time. Even assholes. But at least make a small effort, really.

Also... HAVE FUN. Honestly, with the amount people post about 'doing things right' or 'doing things well,' there's no point in this if you don't enjoy it. This isn't a job.

Lose the Attitude

When someone asks for advice or makes a comment, don't be snarky.
I would divulge more into this but it's self explanatory

1. Learn as you go: Always try to evolve your writing skills, especially if you have time to spare. Accept advice from veterans, and use it to your advantage. Do not ignore it. (Veterans should always be giving advice. If you see anyone struggling, help them out. Everyone messes up.)

2. Don't be an a*****e: If you're an a*****e, and you know you are, then atleast try and keep it on the down low. Noone wants to work with an a*****e. Well... some people do.

3. This is an RP: Take a step back and realize this is for fun. If you're at all stressed out by this, then go to the gym, play a video game, get a tattoo, read, take some time off and do something that, you know, isn't this. Noone's going to give you a hard time from you taking some time off. Just make sure you let the owner or crew know.

Take it as a hobby, not a job.
As people have been saying, this is RP'ing, and it is for fun. There's absolutely no need to be stressed out on it, at least being on the "performer" side of it. We all have one thing in common and that is the love of wrestling, and it gives us a chance to be in it without actually doing it in real life. Sharing this with other fans through RP is what makes it fun. However, still put some effort into it, don't be lazy and leave others hanging. Don't just try to get ahead of everyone and try to win in the shortest way possible, you're basically destroying the fun for the others, and you lose great opportunities to do some amazing things. Let them have their input on the match and try to get the best results. You'll be happier with putting on great matches than just trying to win and get championships.

There are two big things I'm sure a lot of us are aware of, but its always good to review these things.

Avoid "The Puppet Master"

No, not Master of Puppets

Not sure how common of a term this is here, but being a Puppet Master is pretty self-explanatory; its where you control the actions another person does. There ARE times where this is acceptable in our RP:

-If you have two characters in a tag team
-If your tag team partner/manager takes time off and gives you their permission
-If you need to write an agreed-upon finish

Generally, it is a good idea NOT to use The Puppet Master unless you absolutely cannot avoid it. Otherwise, its just frowned upon.

Don't God-Mod

No, not Master of Puppets...wait a tick...

"God-modding," in the RP world, is where you act as an all-powerful force with no weaknesses and every strength imaginable. I also like calling this "The Superman". It is considered lazy writing; giving yourself only strengths actually weakens your character. The less weaknesses you give, the more likely you are to become a Mary Sue, which I'll go over later. Likewise, having too many weaknesses means you're not really worth it.

In our style of RP, this can be considered "No-Selling," or taking an injury and still acting at 100%. Ie: Cartwright nails Salem with a chair to the knee, and Salem doesn't acknowledge it. Sometimes no-selling isn't on purpose, but there are times I've noticed it being done intentionally. Mostly, its done by people who are new.

Put simply, don't god-mod. It isn't fun. It makes it less fun. Its also lazy writing.

The Bella Sw-Sorry, I Mean Mary Sue

Ever read about a character who is just...Wheaties bland? THAT is a Mary Sue, a one-dimensional character who doesn't grow or develop into a complex character. I'd go into detail on what this exactly is, but for now, I'll keep it simple; DEVELOP YOUR CHARACTER.

That's all I got so far.

Don't rage quit if something doesn't go your way, it's not cool! You may be mad about a bookers decision at the time but for all you know they may have grand plans ahead for you! If you're not happy have a chat about it and get whatever the problem is sorted!

Thumbs up to Dion for the awesome link!

You're not always going to look good. You're not always going to have things go your way; no one can always be on top, all the time. Don't let it affect you, don't let it piss you off. Just swallow your pride and realize that even if you lost something, you can do a lot better in another story.
