The wind felt good, flitting through his mane and feathers. The sun warmed his hide after winter, though sometimes Alis could swear he could still feel the chill of it in his bones. But today was a better day than most; and in stretching his wings he almost felt alive once again.
There was definitely warmth in freedom's rushing breath and he tried to forget that he'd just gone through his own season of winter.
He had to move forward. But, to be certain, he wasn't entirely sure how. Where to start? How long would it take? Maybe he should find his daughter? Maybe that wasn't a good idea..? She would be a reminder and even the thought of her sent a pang through him.
So he chose to remain in the sky, wandering aimlessly.

Saffron took in, and let out, a deep breath as she stood on a small rise, surveying the spreading sands of the beach. It was a gorgeous sight on a gorgeous day, the sand sparkling in the sun like a million diamonds. It was a lovely sight, and she wanted to take a moment to appreciate it. But it was only a moment; with a wild, enthusiastic "WHOOP!" the mare charged down the rise into the sand, racing across the beach in a wild flurry of sand. She was a wind, of course; one only had to look at her to see the wings held tightly against her sides. But she had always loved to run, to feel the ground underfoot, to be close enough to see and smell and touch the world around her. Wings were great for traveling long distances, and occasionally for having a bit of good-natured, heart-rate lifting fun. But when it came to truly enjoying a place, she wanted it to be via solid physical contact. So she ran, crowing out her enthusiasm and delight with wild abandon. This was living; this was enjoying life. Not holing up in a cave, seeing the same things and the same people day after day. This was the way things were meant to be. Having run herself breathless, she laughed and fell over into the sand. What a great day to be alive!

For a while, Alis sped through the skies. As he approached the coast and the water that was sparkling in the light, he slowed. He marvelled. He heard the cry of gulls...and the crow of..?
Quirking his head, he looked for the source of the other cries - or maybe it was the only cries - on the beach. What he found was one soquili dashing along the sand. Collapsing on the sand. His ears might have been playing tricks on him at this height. They sounded like they could be delight, but the pace was headlong. The ebony wind dipped a wing and descended in a spiral until his hooves met soft sand.
"Oof..!" He huffed, more jarred by the sudden effort that running through sand had versus solid ground. To be sure, the landing was much more gentle and he slowed quickly enough to make his way over.
"Are you okay..?" Alis inquired, having a feeling he might have been a bit hasty. This one had wings...and sounded like...

Saffron had never been one to worry about things like poise, or dignity. Having grown up with parents who were loving but overprotective to the nth degree, she had embraced the freedom of adulthood with both hooves and indulged herself in numerous things which had been denied to her in childhood. Things like traveling; seeing the world from the heights of the mountains, or enjoying the feeling of warm sand under her hooves. Or, as in at the moment, under her back. She was quite comfortable, taking advantage of the warm sand to rest and get her breath back after her run. She wasn't really thinking about anything in particular, not focused on anything in particular, just enjoying the sensation of being alive. So it there was nothing for the dark stallion to intrude on when he ambled over. "Fine, fine. Just getting my breath back is all. Are you ok? That was a pretty loud huff just then." She raised an eyebrow at the stallion, completely unbothered by his presence, or the fact that he was standing while she was down, or anything else. What was there to be bothered by, anyway? It was a free beach.

Alis blinked down at the mare looking like she was having the grandest of times on her back. A trait he remembered having himself, not so very long ago. His green eyes flashed in a blink as he backed off a step or two with a semi-bewildered expression.
He wasn't in any great mood to interact with the fairer sorts. Not right now, at least, but he had been rather hasty and had gotten himself into this mess, first. He sighed, owning up to it.
"Me? Yes, I'm fine. I just hadn't been able to tell you were enjoying yourself and landed too quickly."
And that was the truth of it.
He cracked a small smile at himself. At least even a rough road couldn't smother who he was, completely. Foolish, perhaps, to jump in whenever and where-ever he could, and his heart had often reflected that in love. And just like his landing - the fact it was jarring and abrupt - it was often too late for him until he realized just how hard he had fallen into it. But unlike normal, there was no response from that troublesome emotional centre. No pique of intrigue or attraction and no desire to flirt.
And that was a relief.
He grew a little less bewildered with that realization, a little more at ease though he still wasn't sure how long he wished to remain in this mare's company, or even if...
"I apologise if I interrupted something, miss. My name is Alis, so I'm not compounding any potential rudeness."

Saffron couldn’t resist the impulse to c**k an eyebrow at the stallion. She wasn’t sure why, but he seemed awfully skittish and…overly apologetic. Well, overly considerate anyway; in her mind, they were the same thing. She wasn’t used to being apologized to, particularly when there was nothing to apologize for. She had no idea what thoughts were running through his mind, but so far she was feeling he was a very odd fellow. Still, she wasn’t going to stomp on another’s need to apologize, as weird as it may be. So with a quick flip, she bounced up to her feet and tossed her braid back over her shoulder. “Well, thanks for your concern, I guess, and don’t worry about it. All I’m doing is enjoying a nice day at the beach, no real plans or anything.” She shrugged her shoulders in a no-nonsense way, then flashed the stallion a grin. “Glad you didn’t hurt yourself while checking if I was hurt; that would have been the source of a cosmic snort of laughter, I think. And I’m crap when it comes to healing or comfort of any sort.” Saffron’s conversational style was a bit terse and forceful, but that had always been her way. Ever since she was a child, she had failed in the ‘feminine’ department; she didn’t know how to giggle and toss her mane, or bat her eyelashes, or anything like that. She’d never been coy, never been flirty; what she was, and always had been, was direct and to the point. Never once had she considered the fact that such direction could be considered rude!

It was certainly an odd situation he found himself in! He had studiously avoided mares for the past while because he feared he would just sink right back where he had been...and it was odd and relieving and startling all at once to realize that he felt nothing of the sort. Maybe it was because she was distinctly not as feminine as other mares he had met, but, he wasn't inclined to think that way because he appreciated all mares.
Or had.
No, still did.
Her abrupt manner was slightly off-putting, but nothing that wasn't able to be handled all the same. He gave a smile that grew to a grin with her jest about the irony that would have been if he managed to injure herself while thinking she was.
He actually didn't mind the bluntness. Instead it was something of a relief to know that she had nothing of the things he was afraid of. Or if she found she did - not likely because he just couldn't see them spending a huge amount of time together; she was enjoying the beach, so sooner or later they would part ways - she would be upfront about it. He gave himself and his head a good shake with a laugh to rid himself of the bothersome thoughts. He had to let go of it all.
It was hard.
Still, her direct manner made it easier to keep his attention on her.
"I think I probably would have fallen over if I had and found out you weren't. Add insult to injury."
He seemed to edge out of his little shadow of unease.
In fact, he gave a long look up and down the sand and water.
"It looks nice. I was kind of not paying attention, really."
Then again...he'd been in a haze for a while, now. Everything seemed fresh, for now. He hoped it would stay that way. He was tired of going through the motions.

It was debatable just what Saffron’s ego might have felt if she knew she was remarkable in being the first mare to NOT be an attraction to Alis. On the one hoof, she had never courted the attention of any stallion, and she would be quick to clout any that she felt was getting too ‘fresh.’ Still, no mare liked to think she was unattractive, even if she wasn’t trying to allure. So it was just as well that they weren’t having that conversation; keeping the topic simple, straightforward, and innocuous meant there were no feathers to ruffle! For her own part, she thought Alis seemed a nice enough fellow, over-eager apologies aside. At least he didn’t seem to be the type to take offense at everything; she hated Soquili like that. As though she and the rest of the world didn’t have enough to do without figuring out how to sugarcoat their words! Honestly, people could be so touchy… But that was neither here nor there. He was having a chuckle at himself; for that, she approved. He might be a bit…fancy when it came to his looks, but if he could laugh at himself then he couldn’t be a bad fellow. So she laughed, the expression softening the sharp edges in her face just a little bit. “I like you, Stallion; it’s a sensible Soquili who knows their own weaknesses and can admit them. If only we could all be so sensible.” So saying, she stuck out her wing in greeting; in her family, they had always touched wingtips as a ‘hello.’ “I’m Saffron. Also not worrying about paying attention, though my unobservant-rescue skills seem less well-developed than yours.”

It was humbling and comfortable, that realization. His ears perked as she laughed in turn, and though he felt like being bashful, he cleared his throat and tipped his head to the side at the sudden extending of her wing. For a second he was clueless until she returned the introduction, so he extended his own wing to brush against hers.
That. He'd never actually done that before. Perhaps he could pick it up as a new greeting, then.
"Well, I was told when I was but a colt that it is more beneficial to be aware of even one of your own flaws than a hundred in others." He smiled. "It's good to meet you, Saffron. And don't worry about those...they'll kick in when you hear someone shouting."
Another jest. But at least he hadn't fallen out of the sky after hearing it. Speaking of coming from the sky, however...
"Would you care for some company for a while?" Despite the fact he wasn't interrupting anything important, if she wanted time alone he would be happy to be on his way. And she liked him well enough, she said, but didn't want to impose on her because of that.

"Hrm...well, I guess there's something in what you were taught, but I'd say you might want to rein it in a little. Though this is a good place we're at now; no more apologizing." Chuckling, Saffron withdrew her extended wing and folded it back along her side, flipping back the scruffy braid of black hair that hung down beside her face. "It's always tough being around Soquili who take themselves or whatever too seriously, and it's extra hard to respect them." Tact had never been Saffron's strong suit, and it didn't once occur to her that what she was saying might be construed as rude or obnoxious. Honesty had always been her policy, although her mouth might benefit from a thought-filter once in a while! "But I think we'll get along just fine, Alis, and while I might object to some company, you can feel free to hang out as long as you'd like! Nothing says 'day at the beach' like taking it easy with strangers who might later become friends, right?" She managed to rattle that off with a straight face, then she burst out laughing once again. "Seriously, I have no idea what you're supposed to do at a beach, but you're welcome to help me figure it out?"

Alis grinned; perhaps he might have apologised for that, as well, but had felt no need for something beneficial he had once been taught. It certainly didn't mean he lived it in each moment, after all. Her blunt honesty was amusing, if a bit startling. Still, he couldn't deny it definitely seemed to suit her all the same, and couldn't fault her for her own personality, even though sometimes having a filter in place wouldn't be a bad thing.
Some of her words initially had him blinking in dismay before he realized that some company didn't necessarily mean his company in particular. The smile was quick to ease back and he chuckled with her.
"Then the best way to find out is to just do what feels most natural, Saffron."
Not that he really had experience in what one did at the beach, but, he was game to find out.
"You weren't doing too bad for yourself, earlier, after all~" The stallion lowered his head to blow out a quick, gusty breath that shifted the sand particles before bringing his head up again. "Just relaxing sounds superb, even."
So saying, Alis' ears perked and he trotted over to where the water lapped at the sand with a look of invitation for Saffron, herself.

Yep, Saffron approved of Alis. He might have been a bit stodgy at first, but he was proving dexterous at rolling with the metaphorical punches. Any Soquili she spent any time with had to be able to handle...well, handle her, which meant handling anything; Saffron had always been a bit mercurial when it came to social interaction, easily getting bored or frustrated with her conversation partners. And, if she were being honest, scaring off a few at the same time. She might not realize she was often brash and tactless, but she didn't have to be a genius to know that sometimes, her social interactions ended very abruptly. But so far, Alis was passing the test! "Valid point, Alis; there's no way anyone is going to enjoy a place even as pretty and different as the beach if they're trying to force themselves to fit into a mold. If your idea of proper beach activity is yelling war whoops and skipping over crabs, then why not try it, right?" Chuckling, she followed Alis over to the edge of the water, going past him and wading into the water up to her knees. "Chilly!"
