Sable dashed in a zig-zag across the field. The fresh air tousled her tail and mussed the feathers tucked into her mane as she cut a path through it. Her chest heaved, muscles and lungs burning, a huge grin on her face. There was nothing at all in the world like the feeling of a good run. It had been a while since she'd really enjoyed running, racing. The pain of her last necessary run had faded with time, and she was able to enjoy it once again. She was grateful to have the escape, the relaxation, of racing at top speed anywhere she wanted once again.

She ran until her skin began to lather. Then, as she reached a particularly thickly-grassed patch, she let her legs buckle and flopped onto the ground. The sun shined down onto her, evaporating her sweat and cooling her off. She laid and watched the clouds float by as the sun slipped lazily through the sky.
After a couple of hours, she clambered to her feet, shook herself, and began to walk toward a nearby path she remembered seeing.

His gait was easy, fluid, flowing as he strode through the field, head held high, chocolate eyes taking in the brand new-ness of spring in all of its glory. Trees in full bloom, little shoots of green sparkling in the sun. New blooms on all the flower stalks, pinks and blues and purples and whites, just beautiful. He loved spring--now, that wasn’t to say he didn’t enjoy winter, because he did. But spring, there was something about this season that made him happy. Light. Free.

Life was good. He had a mate who loved him, a clutch of kids who, while they didn’t stick around, they were adults, they had that right. It was enough to have Vitania all to himself every night, together the two of them wandering and laughing and talking and just…being. And it was nice. Gone were the days of endless flirting with the ladies. Gone, also, were the days of raising a couple of kids--though he wouldn’t be opposed to more babies, even if Vittie was a bit of a brat when she was pregnant. He loved her all the more for it.

He grinned to himself at that. Swinging to the left from the scent of a trickling river, thawed from winter’s chill. He was feeling good today. Maybe even a little bit lucky and it made him wonder what he should do with his day. After a quick drink in the river, he meandered down the bank and towards a path carved out of the forest. Paths brought you places, right?

Maybe he’d meet someone new today.

Her hooves, relatively silent on the grassy plain, began emitting a hollow sound as she moved onto the firmly packed path. She lowered her head to nibble a particularly tender shoot as she went. The crisp, fresh flavor delighted her senses and pleased her. She smelled water in the distance and began to follow her nose. A lovely drink of cold, clear water would be just perfect after the lovely run and the subsequent lazy rest in the warm spring sun.

She smiled. Things had been looking up for her lately. It had taken her heart a long time to heal from the disaster that had destroyed her home, her friends, her family. Although the memory of the things that were now gone from this world made her sad, Sable was now able to smile fondly and reminisce without experiencing agony and anguish each time. She was ready to make new acquaintances, to find a new home. She was ready to live life again.

As she walked, thinking happily about the possibility of a new home, of friends, she realized she was walking straight down the path at another Soquili. Sable grinned and sped into a trot, eager to meet the stranger.

Serren lifted his head at the soft sound of hoofbeats on the packed path--hoofbeats that weren't his own and with a grin, he picked up the speed, eager to meet another beautiful face in this great big world. And soon, she came into view--a deep bay mare with her dark hair pinned up in a strange, feathery design. His ears pricked as he came upon her, pausing right before her.

"Heyyyy there," he greeted, jovial, tipping his head to one side. "It's such a nice day out, don't you agree?" Though he couldn't help but notice the way her tail was windblown and the way her sides had dried sweat--but the mare didn't seem particularly fearful.

"You like to run?" he asked, interest piqued.

She grinned at the stallion. "I sure do," she said cheerfully. "It's the perfect weather for running and racing today." She tilted her head and looked at the sky. It was dotted with fluffy, white clouds, but was clear for the most part, allowing the hot, bright sun of early summer to beat down and warm the ground. This was her favorite time of year. Not too hot, not too cold, and nearly always a light breeze to help cool her down after a run. Sable looked more closely at the stallion. He was winged and was mostly gray and black - except for one leg, which was red with a small black butterfly. She found this curious - how was one lucky enough to get a marking shaped exactly like a creature? "What about you?" she asked. "Do you like to race?"

He grinned back, just as jovial as the bay mare seemed to be. Today was beautiful and it would be a shame to spend it alone after all--as long as he didn’t flirt with the pretty mare--something he was ultimately too good at and ultimately too easy-going with--then Vittie shouldn’t get mad at him, right? And he COULD use a good run, something to get those muscles pumping, the blood racing, his excitement and adrenaline restored anew. He nodded firmly, blowing his tuft of bangs out of his eyes, though they didn’t cooperate very well. Never had, never would most likely, but at least he looked like a rockstar, right?

“I have to agree with you there, ma’am,” he said. The weather was perfect…and it was just too tempting. He lifted an eyebrow, his chocolate brown eyes gleaming with a hint of mischief. “I love it--would you be up for a match? See which of us is faster? I’ll even play fair and not use my wings,” he said with a laugh. “I’m Serren, by the way.”

Sable snorted. "Use your wings if you want, I bet you'll lose anyway," she sassed, a smile still on her face. Her blatant ribbing of her newfound opponent was clearly friendly and she obviously meant well. She chuckled. "I'm Sable. It's nice to meet you," she said. She tossed her head, mane feathers waving as she did so. The amazing weather made her extremely cheerful and spirited. "I think we need a wager," she declared. Races were always more fun with a reward at the end. "Do you know anything about the butterfly on your leg? If so, and I win, you have to tell me about it."
