He sat quietly on a boulder in the middle of the stream, his legs crossed under him and his hands resting on his knees. He was a slight youth, at first glance a Kawani of his mid-teen years. But his skin was darker than any of the Kawani, and the hair that hung down past his shoulders was a deep red color, rather than the black of the Kawani. He wore no leather or skin garments, but his arms, legs, head, and chest were all adorned with burnished silver ornaments, studded with small blue stones. At his throat was a large blue jewel, and a silver key hung about his neck on a thin blue cord.

His eyes were closed, and he was at first, second, and third glance appeared to be deep in thought. And, indeed, he was!

The truth of the matter was, Regelus was at a cross roads. It had been some time since he had encountered any troubled souls who would benefit from his guidance. On the one hoof, this was a positive thing. If he felt no pull to help, that meant that the Soquili he had been passing by were at peace with the workings of Fate. As nothing was more important for Soquili than to accept things they could not change, this was great news. But at the same time, it left Regelus himself feeling oddly adrift.

At times like these, meditation and contemplation were Regelus' greatest comforts. He preferred to do his thinking in his human form, as it was an unusual enough sight to ensure some modicum of peace. So he sat on the rock in the river, trying to find his own acceptance. Surely there was another purpose for him, there always was. He just had to come to terms with the ways things currently stood; in the peculiar tongue of the Kawani, he murmured to himself, "Healer, restore yourself." He knew that things would work out; he would discover what purpose he was intended for, the purpose that explained this lapse in his usual routine. It was not his place to question or second guess the workings of Fate.

One slender hand lifted to gently stroke the key at his neck; it was his most prized possession, the symbol of everything he believed and trusted. It was rare that Regelus found himself in a doubting mood, but they were not unknown. He was no true god, after all, just a Soquili with a unique role to play. And that was what he needed to remember.

Abruptly, he opened his eyes, their ice-blue color in stark contrast to his dark skin and hair. As usual, this break for thought had been for the best, and he unfolded himself gracefully from the rock and stood up. Something important was going to happen, he could feel it. He didn't know what, exactly, but there was something significant that he was meant to do. There could be no other reason for this lapse, and he needed to find this new purpose, and embrace it!

He sighed deeply in relief, running both hands through his hair. He would just have to make a move, that was all.

He, smiled, at peace with himself once again. With that peace enveloping him, he tilted his head back...

And the boy was gone, replaced by a tall, brilliantly adorned angeni stallion.

Life had been hard. At first, she was lost without her brothers. Both had fallen from their homeland. And with that, she was alone with her thoughts. Xolotlcoatl took... years to finally figure out what she was. She fell then, joining her brothers on earth and in these lands. She searched for years to figure out where they were... And during that time, she fell in love. It was odd for her, having someone close to her that wasn't her family. She traveled with the young stallion known as Shoshoni, and was happy for several months. And then one day, they separated. He needed time, and she respected that. So, she left him, and didn't look back.

The mare paused in her thoughts, frowning deeply. She shook out her long hair of teal hair, her red eyes lingering on the ground. No. She couldn't dwell on those thoughts. Not now. She couldn't let those thoughts invade her mind and slow her down. The bells jingled lightly by her throat as she moved forward, wings folding tight against her back. The Angeni was unable to find the stallion she had called love since they separated. She had found her brothers, enjoyed time with them, and now... Now she was lost in a sea of thoughts and emotions that she didn't understand.

Once more the thoughts invaded her mind, and she let out a groan, and dropped her head. No. She needed to push him from her thoughts. It was pointless; nothing she could do could get her to go closer to Shoshoni. She needed to get over him; to realize that he wasn't what she needed. Letting out a small sigh, the mare looked around for a moment, peering around the area for any dangers. Perhaps she could do her job... She could prevent anyone from doing anything bad. But even her will to do that made her sigh. She didn't feel it. Couldn't feel the need to do anything. She dipped her ears back, and lowered her head when she got near a stream. Her nostrils flared for a moment, before she began to lap lightly at the water. Her wings shifted and fluffed at her back, before she lifted her eyes to look around the area once more.

Regelus craned his neck from one side to the other, working the stiffness that always came with a transition out of his joints. He followed up that stretch with a shake to his limbs, and a flex to all the wings on head, back, and feet. It was a reflexive action, but had the additional benefit of giving him a moment to gather his bearings. He knew, as all Angeni with the ability no doubt also knew, that he needed to moderate his time spent in human form; even if he didn't run the risk of losing the ability due to overuse, he would never want to overuse it purely due to the side effects of change!

But midstretch, something caught his attention: the scent of another Soquili, wafting downwind. Turning about, he looked upstream to see if he could observe the Soquili; it had been some time since he'd met anyone out here, and he couldn't help but wonder if this was it: his moment of purpose. A hint of a smile twitched his muzzle at the whimsy of his thoughts; how often had he reminded people that to expect instant gratification was to expect disappointment? Still, a fellow could hope.

He didn't see anyone, but there was a strand of trees at the bend of the river. Figuring it was as good a place to start any any, he trotted up that direction, settling his wings back with a slight tinkling sound.

There was nothing in the trees, nothing of a Soquili nature, anyway, but as he rounded the small grove he was gratified by what he had been hoping for: the sight of another Soquili. He had been expecting that. But what he had NOT been expecting was the four spreading back wings, the feathers behind the unique headdress. This was an Angeni, one as dramatically looking, in her own way, as he was himself.

How extraordinary.

Xolotlcoatl sighed softly as she nosed the water a bit, as though cleaning her face. She frowned at her reflection, tilting her head this way and that, before lapping a bit more at the water. She flicked her ears, before lifting her head up and peered around curiously. She didn't see anyone about at the moment, so she relaxed some. Her wings shifted along her back, stretching out some, before folding tightly against her sides and back. She lowered her head lightly, and lapped at the water, before her ears flicked once more. The sound of bells jingling got her attention, and though she knew it was her own, it caught her attention.

She lifted her head again from the sounds, as though it would silence her bells. But when she did, she caught the sight of something dark red not far from her. She blinked, her red eye flickering and locking on the stallion. She stared for several moments, her muscles giving a small quiver. He was an... an Angeni? She had found them to be rare in these lands. He looked to be covered in armor plates, and had glowing blue gems hanging from his attire. He didn't seem like a threat... of course, Angeni's weren't threat. She had yet to meet one that was dark enough to cause pain to anyone, or one who dared hurt another person. She had only ever hurt her own parents; but that was from a betrayal, and not something physical.

Uncertain what to do, the mare looked up to him. She blinked for a moment, before flicking her ears back again. Xolotlcoatl wasn't certain what to say to him; what to do. She flicked her ear again, before turning to fully face him, the movement making the bells jingle lightly at her jaw. She looked up at him, before tilting her head slowly to the side. "Hello." She said softly, tail giving a small flick behind her.

Regelus was so used to his own apparence that it aways took him a moment to realize the reason when he was stared at. Then again, that seemed to be par for the course for the Angeni race; with their basic physical traits of large size and multiple wings, they were eye-catching even if naturally colored and bare. But there were few among the race that Regelus had met who fit that description; many of the Angeni were brightly colored, and many others sported dramatic ornamentation. Regelus himself fit both criteria, with his deep bloodred coat, silver ornaments, and electric blue gems. So it was only natural that he would be on the receiving end of a little gaping.

Not that the Angeni mare was gaping, by any means. Indeed, the mare was almost reserved in her manner; once her intial staring was over, she seemed determined to avoid looking at him for longer than a few seconds. He could respect that reserve.

Cordially, he nodded his head at the mare in response to her greeting. "Hello to you as well. I apologize for intruding on your solitude, but I caught your scent and was curious who else was around. It has been some time since I met up with another Soquili in these parts." And wasn't that the truth. He didn't feel any 'pull' towards this mare to indicate she was at a cross roads, so he would still need to watch and wait for the opportunity to be truly helpful. However, it was nice to know that whatever was provoking his dry spell, it wasn't due to a complete lack of other Soquili.

Xolotlcoatl wasn't used to seeing other Angeni. Aside from her family, she had never seen another of the rare species. They were few and far between, it seemed; and though she didn't mind that, she wished she knew more about this species. She herself was one, but it wasn't like she knew everything. She was still learning, and since she had spent such few time with her brother, she didn't know much more than what she had found out herself. Her wings flicked slightly, as though a nervous habit to shift them along her back. Perhaps it was just something she did when in deep thought, but she needed to keep in mind that this stallion was an Angeni like her...

At first she tried to see if anything was going to go wrong. She played the different outcomes in her head of meeting this stallion, and nothing seemed to go wrong. And then it hit her. Of course not, Xolotl, Angeni's could do no harm. They were pure spirits, and no matter what happened, could never go evil. Especially not pure Angeni like the two of them were. She shifted her stance some, fully facing the stallion, her head held high. He was a stunning creature indeed, and she couldn't help but admire him somewhat. But, after a few seconds, and him speaking, she nodded her head slightly in return.

"I suppose that is true... I have never been in this part of the lands..." She said softly. Xolotl's eyes flickered around, before landing on the stallion again. The bright red locked on his shocking blue, and she tilted her head some. He was a pure soul, and for that, she relaxed. She turned slightly, not caring to bare any possible weakness, before dipping her head down to lap at the water some more. After a moment, she lifted her head once more, peering around, and then looked over toward the stallion once more, her tail giving a slight flick. "I am Xolotlcoatl; and may I inquire as to your name, sir?" She asked politely.

She was a very mild mare, Regelus reflected with approval. He had never been given to strong emotion himself, and while he was used to dealing with it in others, he enjoyed the opportunity for socialization that wasn’t…well, weepy. Or hostile, or angry, or any other such dramatic sentiment. He was a placid fellow himself, and he always enjoyed placidity in others. Indeed, this mare was already giving Regelus himself a run for his money when it came to nonchalance. Yes, he approved indeed, and he nodded his head slightly in expression of that approval as the mare resumed her drinking.

So she was a stranger here, then; a wanderer, but for what purpose? As far as he could tell, she was also a pure Angeni, which meant she must have some mission or duty of her own. Perhaps conversation would reveal that information; while Regelus had never met an Angeni, himself included, who wasn’t proud of their connection with the spirits and their special purpose in life, he’d never considered it good form to ask such things upfront. One could be proud and respectful at the same time, after all; furthermore, it was possible that in spite of her placid demeanor, she was one of the younger Angenis, still coming into her own and striving to develop herself and her abilities.

Meeting the mare’s gaze with equal calmness, he inclined his head. “I’m Regelus, and it’s a pleasure to meet you, Xolotlcoatl. I hope you have found your time in this region thus far to be pleasant. I myself am a rover, but I have been through this region once before.”

Xolotlcoatl shifted carefully, her head tilting to the side. She moved with a sort of grace that only the Angeni species could hold. Perhaps it was because of their connection with the heavens, or how they were... well... spiritially filled. Her eyes flickered toward the sky for a moment, peering up at the trees and where she could see the bright blue of the sky shining through. Her tail twitched behind her, causing the long hair to shift and fall almost like a waterfall down her flank and legs. For some reason the Aztec mare always seemed to have a way about her; a beauty that not many others could figure out. And she didn't quite understand it either... She didn't know where it came from; where she came from. Where were her brothers...

Shaking the thought from her mind, the Angeni focused once more. He had said his name. Regelus. She ran the name through her mind several times over before nodding her head gently. She smiled gently and let her wings shift along her back and sides, before folding them comfortably against her body. She had more comfort when they were folded down. If they were extended her feathers could break... and what if she needed to find someone and help her get her feathers preened back into tip top shape. She shifted slightly in front of him, as though she was nervous. She'd never met another Angeni, and it could help her to get used to speaking to others. After all, what if her brothers didn't recognize her? What if they didn't realize who she was? This could help, right?

Right...

The mare smiled politely at the silver adorned stallion. Regelus, right? Right. She smiled gently and nodded her head toward the introduction. At least they knew each others names. That helped. She took a half step forward, toward him and away from the river. If she wasn't careful of where she stepped she could get her hooves and legs wet, which could make for a horrible walk back to the small tree cluster that she had claimed as her own little home while she searched these forests. Her hoof lifted slightly off the ground, before going back down and digging slightly in the grass and mud. "The pleasure is all mine, Regelus! I cannot say that I have met another like myself before..." She murmured quietly, thoughtfully. After musing over the different faces that she had seen, she locked her gaze once more on the stallion before her, smiling lightly toward him. "The land is beautiful. I do not recall seeing it as this... green before. But it is very lovely... Vibrant and the smells..." She stopped when she realized she was rambling, laughing softly at herself. "A rover? What does that mean?" She asked curiously, her head tilting to the side.

Regelus had always been a stable fellow, in terms of both attitude and physicality. Time and time again, he'd needed to stand his ground in rough situations; his special gifts could bring peace and calmness to others, but they could also easily provoke hostility in those with an axe to grind with the cosmos. He could take a lot without moving or flinching; strength and stability were as much a part of his body at this point as his spirit.

So as Xolotlcoatl first shifted, then stepped towards him, Regelus remained as he was; firmly upright, weight balanced evenly on all four hooves. He preferred to let others close the distance between them, if they were so inclined; being non-threatening was an essential part of what he did. Even with his gifts, there was no way he'd manage to get others to open up to him if they felt threatened by his person or his presence.

As she moved closer, Regelus studied the mare carefully. He still felt no 'pull' from her; if she was feeling any anxiety, it was something she was accepting of, not something she was fighting. At this point, their conversation seemed to be just that: a conversation, with no agenda. How very peaceful. It had been too long since he'd seen another Angeni, and the last one he'd encountered had been his little protege, Ausdauer, an exhausting creature if Regelus ever knew one!

Ausdauer was in the back of Regelus' mind at Xolotlcoatl's comment regarding the novelty of meeting another Angeni, and he smiled in his very slight, reserved way. "Well, Angenis are still somewhat of a rarity in these parts, I've found; pure-blooded Angenis even moreso. I've encountered a few others in the course of my travels, but it's been a while." Nodding his head courteously, he followed Xolotlcoatl's lead in looking around. It was easy, when you spent a lot of time in a place, to start to overlook its charms; Xolotlcoatl's remark was a nice reminder to take time to enjoy the world, as much as anything in it! "It is a very nice region, I do agree. If one is going to be traveling, it never hurts to be in a place so gifted in natural beauty. And on that note, a rover is a traveler, a wanderer. I keep no fixed abode, so I am, by definition, a rover."

Tilting his head slightly to one side, he asked, "But what brings you to this region, if I may ask?"

Xolotlcoatl hadn’t thought this through. Honestly. Finding her brothers was her top priority. But this… This was different. And she wasn’t certain why she didn’t expect to be meeting others on her way through this world. The one where she grew up was so specific… So very picky. And it meant that she would have to work hard to prove herself. And that was why she had come down here. To be free from all those rules and to live her life as she wanted to live it. Instead, she was confused about the world around her, she didn’t know who was good or evil, didn’t know what was going on. And she ended up wandering around and meeting new people. New people that were both evil and good. Some that were just plain neutral. And then Regelus. And he was good… Angeni were good.

Right?

Right.

The mare shifted some to lock her gaze with his, red eyes sharp. She wasn’t going to disrespect him in any way, and if that meant that she needed to prove herself, she would. Her wings folded securely along her sides, all four sets eased neatly against her back. It was clear she was used to being in this form; used to the longness of her back and the way her wings fit oh so perfectly. She wasn’t used to her human form any more, and she actually refused to ease into it. Not unless she absolutely had to. Her red eyes lingered on Regelus’ and she slowly stopped her advance toward him, offering him the proper respect of personal space. Of course, she had always known not to get too close to others, but he seemed very trust worthy. She smiled gently toward him, listening intently as he spoke. How fascinating. So a rover was a traveler. That was good to know. She’d heard that term before, as well as wanderer. But never Rover. Her head tilted to the side, peering curiously toward the stallion.

The question brought her attention to the forefront. Could she trust this stallion with her secret? With what her goal was? Xolotlcoatl tilted her head and pondered it, before shrugging off the anxiety. He couldn’t do anything that could stop her, and he couldn’t do anything that would hinder her search either. So, she smiled at him, and nodded her head as she spoke. ”I haven’t been down here for long; just a few months, really. But I have learned so much. I came to find my brothers… they appear similar to me, and are said to be wandering this land helping others. I decided that my time was better spent doing the same, but I want nothing more than to find them and be reunited with my siblings. Someday, I’ll be there.” She said, her voice gentle. It was true, she wanted to find her siblings and be able to figure out their purpose for leaving, as well as learn her purpose for staying.
