1) Is it possible? 2) Is anyone familiar with the franchise? 3) Is there interest?
I have always loved the idea's in the game. And even if the ending was uninspired, the journey to get there was amazing.

Possible, yes, but it requires that the plot either avoid Shepard (and all their activities, which is awkward) entirely, be EXCEPTIONALLY vague ("I heard Shepard did stuff!" 'She was great, yeah?' "I thought he was a guy?" 'Who cares?') or establish a setting cannon for the purpose of the thread group.
Second question already answered.
As to if there is interest? I'm not sure - there are certainly stories that could be told in the universe that would be neat to explore.
I personally avoid series based rps because I hate people playing cannon characters....
It is a small pet peeve about not being able to ever play it as well as the creator of the character and for people who think they can do it better than said creator.
Not that I am accusing you of such nor am I assuming such things will happen my point is there is a chance they will. Make it if you wish if its going to be huge ill make you a forum but I wont play in it.

Ah, that's a point too - I also avoid cannon characters, I meant only that the decisions of Shepard would need to be cannon-ised for the thread to avoid confusion.
Indeed it was my understanding that such a RP would be OC based (MAYBE a cameo appearance by a major character as an NPC where it makes no sense for the old character to be displaced - for example Princess Luna and Celestia in MLP)
It would be interesting to set it several years after the final events of the game. You would have a mixture of aliens stranded on a planet not their own. Alliances and friendships would be mismatched in an attempt to get space bound again. Just enough to visit outlaying planets, but they would be stranded galaxy wise due to the mass relays being kaput. This way, there could be a world full of mercs and c-sec characters that are completely OC.
Mmm.. Sure, sign me up too. There would still be the question of what survived the course of the game though
Council? Quarians? Geth? Etcetera, etcetera.
And for that matter the ending... Didn't even happen? Was it all a figment of Shepard's imagination?

That would definitely have to be hashed out. I would say all the races survived for variety, but Quarians would probably be sparse due to a high death rate. In my mind there would be designated clean zones where they would have to live, but some would definitely survive.
I think it would be interesting to have the events happen, as I have always wondered what the world was like afterwards. This could even be hundreds of years in the future, with distant planets making contact once more. But after so long would they still be friendly? Or would they fight for space and supplies?
Well, I think at least some of the races would consider it (fighting for the Earth's resources that is) but others would be incompatible with most of the stuff on our planet (Quarians and Turians have opposing DNA according to the series - they would have to survive on whatever food they brought with them until they could cultivate their own - easier for the Quarians than the Turians, since the Quarians brought their homes with them)
The ones I would expect to cause the most problems would be Krogan, Rachni and the Leviathans (from the DLC)... well, assuming the leviathans didn't just "flip us off" and tell us they were "out of here - these mortals are cramping our space".
The Turians would be trying to keep order (for whom? Not sure - don't think that question would matter to them), the Asari would probably be trying to act as diplomats...
Geth and Quarians would still be wary of eachother (one does not forget a war that lasted centuries overnight) but (assuming Tali survived for any amount of time) they would have a tenuous cooperation. They would also have earned better reputations in the fighting - I find it highly unlikely that both of them don't have a large collection of people that owe them their lives.
