Sakura took a deep breath, ashen eyes darting around the unfamiliar surroundings. Whilst her muscles were tense with anxiety, she walked forwards with strong purpose, a determined look etched into her face. It had taken a long time for her to get up to this point, to finally set out on her journey, but she was proud.

She knew she had her family, both new and old, backing her, and the thought gave her strength. She could do it, she had to do it. Their faces jumped into her memory. Adrian, her best friend and father of her first set of foals; Blair, her loving and sweet son; Cassiel, her second son, so laid back and easy to talk to; Hazalina and Blade, from Adrian's family, who had taken her in and sheltered her when she was at her most fragile; Casper, her dear brother who was her rock and sanity most of the time. Even Kaiya, the kind mare who'd helped her through her pregnancy, and Maion, the strong stallion who had saved her from kalona imprisonment. All of these lay close to her heart, and she knew that with their support she could get through this.

She squared her shoulders, letting the last of the fear slip away. The beginning was the hardest, and she had done that. She was on her way, nothing could stop her, not until she found out her answers. And that knowledge exhilarated her. This was it, she was off on her quest!

Tiriaq was at odds. Even little Quinara, though a loyal companion, couldn't help him. He had been traveling for a while, looking for . . . he didn't really know what. But since his mother's passing, Tiriaq didn't know what to do with himself.

He missed his mother. He missed the smile he could bring to her eyes and the time they would spend together taking care of her mane. He missed finding the perfect flowers to frame her face. And he missed knowing his place in the world.

While he was with her, Tiriaq never had to question what the day would bring. He knew how to care for her. But now he was left with no one to care for but the little bird who accompanied him. And Quinara took more care of him than the inverse. There was only so much he could care for his mane and tail, only so much he could distract himself looking for flowers to adorn himself. Tiriaq knew that he looked the best he could manage, that it would have made his mother happy to see. But there was no one to look good for now.

With a sigh he continues down the trail. Maybe he would find someone else, someone who he could take care of, could belong with. Someone who could show him his place in the world.

Squaring off her shoulders, she resolutely plodded onwards, going further and further into the unknown. Her muscles, used to such a walking motion, moved smoothly along, allowing her to maintain a steady gait. Though she had never travelled very far, bar the occasional trip she had make to the big oak grove, she had enjoyed going for long walks through the familiar forest routes every single day, and so her body was well up to the task of a lengthy journey. And even then, should her legs grow weary, she always had the option of taking to the sky and flying for a short while.

One ashen eye peaked out from beneath her pale mane, looking up into the canopy above. Sakura had only just entered this forest, having spent the last few days crossing the expanse of the Aa-wi-u-s-di plains. If she kept on in this direction, it might be that flight would actually no longer be an option, but she was fairly sure that her father had gone this way. North and west. Where else, really, could he have gone? Just overhead, the branches were beginning to thicken, foliage smothering the sun's bright rays. She swung her head about, taking it in. This forest, though similar to her own in composition, was completely alien to her. She knew just too well how easy it was to get lost - one minute you were sure you were heading west, and the next you find a clearing and it turned out you are heading in completely the wrong direction. She'd have to be careful.

At least she had her loyal companion, Tinsel, with her. The corners of the mare's mouth creased into a smile. The hummingbird was, at that moment, soundly asleep, nested between the strands of Sakura's thick hair. She didn't know how she would have been able to do this alone, such a long and arduous trip. Even so, the lack of any Soquili companionship was beginning to grate on Sakura's nerves. She was used to being constantly surrounded by friends and family. It would have been nice to bump into someone, even if only for a short while.

Tiriaq, distracted by some lovely flowers on the side of the trail, almost didn't hear the approaching hoof-falls from around the bend in the path. The trees hid the source of the sound, but Tiriaq looked up in hope.

Maybe this would be someone he could talk to, take care of, belong with. Or, at least travel with for a time. Not able to wait for the stranger to come into view, Tiriaq calls out, "Hello!" He took pains to sound friendly, hoping the other would be friendly as well. But, wanting to put his best-hoof forward, he gathers a few of the nicest flowers to give to the other. Surely that would help.

Yes, a companion would be nice. It had been ages since she'd seen another soul. Either this region of the Kawani lands was sparsely inhabited, or she'd just been incredibly unlucky not to run into anyone. Her mind drifted off into the distance, flittering between faces she'd seen before. She wondered where her sons were, if they were faring well, if they'd met anyone. And Adrian, how was he doing now? Had he found someone to settle down with, or was he still set firmly in his rebellious phase? On and on it went, to the faces of the Miakoda herd, to her various brother and sister's. Even to the kalona she had spent so long fearing, had they stopped pursuing her? Or had they reformed their ways entirely?

So wrapped up in her own thoughts was Sakura that she didn't even notice the stallion crossing her path until his voice cut through the air around her. She snapped out of her reverie, blinking her eyes back into focus on her immediate surroundings. And not a moment too soon, for the stallion was standing just around the bend from her. "Oh! Hello!" Her voice nickered back pleasantly, trotting around the bend with ears pricked forwards eagerly.

A unicorn was standing on the forest path, his fur a pale beige, almost blending in with the tree trunks around him. His long mane trailed down to below his knees, and a peculiar beard sprouted from his chin. Sakura raised her tail in greeting, relishing the opportunity to meet this new person. He seemed friendly from his demeanour, as eager as she herself was to say hello. "Haven't bumped into anyone for a while around here, but where are my manners, I'm Sakura!"

Tiriaq smiled. What a lovely mare, such a plesant soft pink. And her mane was wonderously long, too bad she pulled it back in a braid like that, it would be glorious down with flowers in it.

Putting those thoughts aside, "It is good to meet you. I am Tiriaq. It has been a quiet while, actually." He gestures to the flowers he had been gathering, "Not as sweet as the cherry blossoms of your unexpected presence, but a gift of beauty for a true beauty."

Tiriaq was rather pleased his turn of phrase there. His mother had always wanted complements like that. He hoped the words and gift would bring the same smile to this mare's face.

Sakura could feel the rush of heat into her cheeks at his flattering comment. She ducked her head, trying to hide the sudden smile that escaped onto her face. How long had it been since someone had spoken in such a way to her? With a flash of guilt, she realised it had been Pure, a stallion who had laid the moves down on her when his cousin, Cleite, had fallen for Sakura. Unknowing how best to handle the situation, she's made rather a mess of it, resulting in neither stallion really wanting to see her again. That had been a long time ago, before she'd even had her foals. Adrian had of course complimented her, but their love had never been beyond platonic, and he wasn't the most poetic of stallions.

Her grey eyes peeked out from beneath her fringe, allowing her smile to show properly. "You have a most flattering tongue, Tiriaq." Her voice was soft and gentle, yet almost teasing, showing him her light-hearted nature. "It is not often I meet one such as you. It's quite refreshing, actually." Already she felt herself relaxing, without even realising she'd been un-relaxed prior to that moment. The journey must have been taking its toll on her, not just in distance, but emotionally too. She felt decades older than she had been when she'd set out.

Then again, she could probably attribute most of that to Eya. She had been avoiding thinking about her, but inevitably her mind still strayed back. Her daughter, born of the wishing star, had been given to Sakura during her travels. Never again would she raise a foal on the move. Eya and Sakura had barely gotten along, as much as Sakura had tried. Her daughter was head-strong and fiesty, and had not long ago left Sakura to make her own way. Though they had not parted badly, Sakura still felt she ought to have done better by her, but it was out of her hooves now. Determined not to dwell on the past, Sakura turned her mind back to the stallion before her. "So what brings you down this rarely travelled path?"

Tiriaq makes a flourished bow at being called flattering. "It is only truth upon my lips, fair Sakura." He smiles as he straightens back up, a slight toss of his mane to ensure it falls nicely back out of his eyes.

His purple gaze catches the blush of her cheeks and it warms him. To say something to bring a blush was a sign he had done his duty to her. It was a rare day that he could get such a reaction from his mother, and he treasured the easy acceptance of this lovely mare.

"Glad I am to be a boon upon your travels. Though indeed you light the path before me with welcome brilliance for which I must be humbly grateful. Too long have I wandered alone in want of such lovely company."

A winning smile, one he knew made him look even more charming, "I fear I have no destination, so I wander, lost, looking for purpose. This path seemed as worthy as any other. Now I see it was fate that moved my hooves, fate that lead me to such a beautiful lady."

Phail Ninja
My turn to apologize for the delay, so sorry.
