Growing up in Almia, Rose fell in love with the idea of being a Pokemon Ranger and became the youngest student to ever pass the entry exam at age 6. What followed was years of training, with her taking every sort of class available in the school, ranging from all things Pokemon to botany, to medicine, and many more things. With her attention so divided, she did not really master any of the skills she tried to learn, but she did become competent in all of them because of her book smarts and her photographic memory.
By Age 12, she had graduated and started working as a Pokemon Ranger, getting shipped off to the Oblivia Region to work there, despite her youth. She did her best, but knowledge alone was not enough to make her successful, due to her lack of confidence, though she did meet her Pokemon partner, a Meowth, who became her constant companion.
She had been in Oblivia for a year when an error in the Oblivia regions power chargers prevented her Styler from the Almia region from getting recharged there, so she was issued a new capture styler that would recharge properly from the Oblivia region, along with a personal styler recharging device, so she boxed up her old styler and used her new one in her work.
Eventually, it became apparent that her personal issues were getting in the way of her job, and she was called back to Almia. She packed up her things and returned home, where she was stripped of her status as a Pokemon Ranger at age 14 and she was asked to turn in her capture style which had been issued to her in Almia, and she did. She was not asked to return the Oblivia styler because they apparently did not realize she had received an additional styler and charger in Oblivia. She was told that she could reapply to join the Ranger's Union in a few years if she had overcome her personal issues by then.
Rose set out from Almia on a journey to get to know herself and to know Pokemon better, and she traveled first to Fiore, where she spent three more years amongst pokemon and trying to build her confidence before heading to the Kalos region, where she met Professor Sycamore in Lumiose City.
Professor Sycamore urged her to select a Pokemon to travel with her and her companion meowth. She agreed to try being a trainer, and accepted a Froakie from Professor Sycamore, and she left her Capture Styler and Charger with Professor Sycamore for safe keeping, since she was going to learn how to be a trainer and did not want to rely upon it too much, so she needed to first learn to be strong without it.
After leaving the Professors, she traveled south to Santalune City, where she intended to battle Viola. En route, she captured a Furfrou and a Fletchling, and there she battled the gym leader and defeated herm then collected her badge and headed for Cyllage Gym, unaware that she'd meet Team Aqua when she arrived there.
