Laikaylah watched as her son, Powder, played in the meadow near their home thicket. Though he did not come of her body, she was more certain than anything in her life that he came from her soul. She did not questions the spirit's visions, though she did not get them as often as some mares in her family - when she did she was smart enough to take heed. She couldn't exactly explain it- how this little lost basket found in the snow was hers, but she accepted it completely. Powder, a name suggested by her mate, was hers as much as any of her other five children. And she couldn't be happier - she loved having such a large family and didn't plan on quitting anytime soon. She smiled at the thought and looked over to her mate, Glacier, who was napping in the cool spring air. She would wait until Powder was grown, of course, just because she didn't want him to get any impressions that he wasn't 'good enough.'

Four sons, two daughters; she was most certainly blessed.

Glacier was a much more simple Soquili than his mate, Laikaylah. He didn't have visions; nor did he completely understand them when his mate had them. But over the years, he learned to accept them as part of what made Laikaylah so beautiful to him; and they had never led them astray. He was skeptical at first about this pale basket; not that he had a problem with adopting a baby that needed a family; but he was not as convinced as Laikaylah was that this basket was as much their soul and body as their other children. That was, of course, until he said the little foal come out.

Though his fur was pale...there was no denying that baby was theirs. It was like looking into a pale pink mirror of his soul. He should have known better than question his spiritual lover. He would have always treasured this boy as his son, but perhaps she was right about him being as part of their flesh as all their other children.

Mikaeus was lounging nearby. His parents had asked him to stick around after he came to meet his new little brother. Since Powder had no other siblings to play with, they thought it would be a good idea to have Mikaeus stay around and be there for any brotherly duties; a job he was happy to oblige. He was fascinated by the story of how his little brother came to be; but like his mother he didn't question it much. He couldn't see his brother or his beautiful pale coat; but he felt the warm of his skin and the smell of his fur; and he was happy to call him his brother.

Powder hadn't been out of his basket for very long, but each new day brought with it wonders and warmth. Whether it was from a velvety nuzzle from his mother or a guiding nose from his father or even the words from his brother.
When the whole world cooled off and the dazzling light of day eased back, the night revealed so much beauty, and with it the faces of his parents. But the world in the daytime was a scintilling amazement. Motes of light seemed to shimmer in his vision - that he often cavorted about and chased, even if he coudl never quite catch them. Often times, it meant tripping over something that the blinding light concealed. But Powder was optimistic, and it didn't take long for him to pick himself back up on his four hooves and continue cavorting.

He paused, suddenly, swaying on his hooves and staring up at the sun quietly, pink eyes wide and pupils contracted to pinpricks. The rest of the world seeming to be swallowed up by the whiteness as he stared, swearing he could see images in the all-consuming whiteness.

Laikaylah watched her son, a shadow of worry passing over her features. She had learned by now, through trial and error, that Powder's pale eyes had a hard time seeing in the day. For many weeks after he emerged from this basket, Laikaylah thought he may be blind like his brother, Mikaeus, but it soon became apparent he was only day-blind. This was a relief, but presented its own host of challenges. She had asked her son's help to remedy that...

Glacier's eyes narrowed at his son stared up into the sun. Laikailah had explained to him that his pink eyes made him very sensitive to light, and therefore he couldn't see well during the bright light of day. So if that was the case he shouldn't be looking at the sun like that, should he? That wouldn't be good for anyone eyes much less someone who was sensitive to light.

He walked over to his son, concerned. "Powder?" he asked quietly, coming over to him. He nuzzled him gently on his shoulder.

Mikaeus heard the concern in his father's voice, and he stood up as well. Even though he didn't have his sight, Mikaeus was extremely acute to other things; including even the smallest inflections in other Soquili's voices. He took a few tentative steps closer to where he could hear his father and his brother were standing.

His little goat friend, Denny, was off and he wasn't used to not having her around. Sadly he had began to rely on her alittle too much as crutch. But it was for good reason - she was off to find her own family and hopefully bring back a friend to help with Powder. Since Denny had been such a good companion for him, his parents thought having another "Seeing Eye Goat" would be good for the dayblind colt.

"Everything ok?" he asked his father.

Only after a couple queries of his name by his father did Powder finally blink his eyes first once, and then quickly, and then turned his head towards the voice.

"I heard the message, daddy!" He said in a high, sing-song voice, "the sunrise... it bathes the world in the colors... perfumes the ground with flowers... grants us a saddle. After the thirst.. a flood... quencing the creatures in the cemetary!"

He smiled widely, as if this were some truly profound revelation.

"Can you see it?"

Laikaylah pursed her lips as she watched and listened to her son. Did she hear him correctly? She got to her hooves and trotted closer, standing between her mate and her son. She looked into his eyes, watched them contract and focus in the light of day. She knew this would be hard to explain to her more down-to-earth life mate...

...and she was horribly unpracticed with interpreting these kind of prophecies. Though MIkaeus had been born blind, he didn't seem to have this gift, which often went hand-in-hand. "What did you see, Powder?"

Glacier blinked incredulously at Powder's ramblings. He swallowed, nervous. While his mate seemed calm about this, be felt a twinge of uneasiness in his stomach. "Son, what are you going on about?" he asked, looking between Powder and his mate.

Mikaeus listened, intrigued. When he was younger, his mother had pulled him aside and warned him that he may have visions. Apparently, his mother had told him, that many in her family, especially those were blind, would get visions. Despite that, he never seemed to get any.

It didn't bother him any, he liked being as 'normal' as he could, despite his disability. But he wondered if this was the kind of thing his mother had spoken of.

Powder gave a cute, squeal of a whinny, sounding pleased with himself. It was hard to see things when it was bright out. Blurriness and white and spots of color. Shadows helped sometimes, too. But sometimes all those blurry little dots gathered together and showed him something. Especially when he stared realllly hard up at the brightest possible point.

He turned his head away from the brightness now, and to the purple fuzziness that he knew was his mother. He could smell her, hear the twinkle of her voice. "It was so pretty, momma! Flowers, raining down on us from the sun. All over the ground and all over us. And the rain! " His little short, fuzzy tail wiggled behind him.

"Don't you think so, Daddy?" he looked over towards the blue blur.

I'm kind of viewing what his 'vision' was speaking of being some kind of loose metaphor for the worst of things (the fires) being over that rains will come and help ease the pain of the dead. April showers and all that.

Laikaylah nuzzled her son, knowing he knew her more by smell and touch than sight. She pulled him close and smiled, more excited about his visions than she thought she would be. It reminded her of home, and her grandmother. She had thought tha gift had died in the frozen north... but could this son, given to her by the spirit, possess this gift. "It sounds beautiful, Powder," she said to him. She honestly didn't really understand what he was saying, but she knew interpreting the vision would get it better with time.

Glacier didn't know how he thought about all this. It made him a bit uncomfortable, like he wasn't in on some kind of inside joke. He sighed when his son addressed him, dipping his head lower to be on his level. "Yeah son," he said playing along. "It sounds really nice. I don't think I can see the pretty colors you, though." He looked to Laikaylah and shrugged - was he doing ok?

Mikaeus could feel the tension building up - his mother's happiness and his father's hesitance. He loved both his parents dearly, but his dad was much more simple stallion than his mother.

But elsewhere, he smelled a familiar scent in the air. Likely before anyone else, he could tell that Denny was close, on her way back. "Powder," he said, his face breaking into a smile. "I think I have a present for you."

Powder happily nosed his mother back, breathing in her warm, maternal scent. That scent, that touch was so comforting to the little foal - like being wrapped in a warm, velvety security blanket. "It is, momma!" he chirrupped.

The vision felt... reassuring to the foal. Bright and promising. He couldn't quite understand or interpret what he was seeing yet (of course, even in the future, those interpretations would be just that - interpretations) - but he could describe the disjointed images that seemed to flash in his mind's eye.

"You can't see them, pappa?" He asked innocently.

But soon, he was distracted by the voice of his brother. "A present? A present?" He cantered about, awkwardly splayed-legged in a little circle. "What is it what is it?"

"Good boy, you'll have to tell me more about it later," she said, fuzzing with this mane a bit like any mother could,. "For now, it looks like your brother has something he wants to show you."

She took a few steps and nuzzled Glacier reassuringly. She knew this kind of thing was hard for him to understand; be he always knew that Glacier loved her and his family more than anything else in the world.

She also gave an approving smile and nod to her older son, Mikaeus, and whinnied happily at Denny and her new companion she had with her. She had know the plan, of course. Mikaeus was going to stay with them as Denny went off and found another goat to come back and like with Powder. Having a constant companion did wonders for Mikaeus; despite his blindness he was able to travel the world and be just a regular young stallion. Even through Powder could see more than Mikaeus, she was hoping it would still be good for him to have an extra set of eyes.

"I'm sorry, son..." Glacier said, giving his son a reassuring snuggle. "I don't see the things you do. But that's okay - it makes you special. Now let's go see what your Big Brother has in store for you!"

Glacier had known of Laikaylah's family and her heritage way up in the Great North. At the time, it hadn't even occurred to him that if they had children, that could come back into his life. He knew that his mate didn't have the visions, but as soon as Mikaeus was born blind - it was suddenly reality that this could be something his bloodline would be forever intertwined with.

It wasn't a bad thing, just weird for Glacier to think about. He never felt overly special or different. Just a simply, nice stallion. He felt unequipped for his son's questions, and was very grateful for Laikaylah's patience.

He was excited to see the new companion Denny had brought. Hopefully his son didn't think he wasn't capable... but it would make him feel much more comfortable to know he had an extra soul watching out for him.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

"Yeah, Powder!" he grinned, building off the excitement if his little brother. "You'll see, comes this way." Mikaeus nudged the flank of his brother and headed in the direction he smelled Denny. He knew her scent - a musky earthy smell like hay and grass - distinctly hers. She has become an invaluable part of his life, and he found himself more excited than he expected to see her.

Mikaeus has always been blind. It's hard to miss something you never had, so he couldn't really say he missed his sight. Even as a foal he was able to get along fairy well. He learned very quickly how to feel for changes in the landscape with his hooves, or to use his nose or ears to find something to eat or his parents.

But despite his best efforts, he was limited unless he had someone nearby to help him out with some tasks. Not that he minded his parents - he loved them very much. But as he got older, it was normal for him to want to strike out 'on his own.'

Finding Denny changed his life. Now, with her help, he could explore the world and always find his way home. He wanted to give that same gift to his little brother. Plus, he didn't have any other siblings his age, so having another friend to play with was icing on the cake!

"I will, Mamma! And you, too, Papa! I can show you with words!" Powder trilled at his mother before cavorting a bit towards where he had heard the sound of his brother's voice.

He let his big brother guide him through the meadow, his ears swiveling and nose flaring as he squinted his eyes in the blaring white of the sun. A few dazzling colors flashed in his eyes in the form like motes dust glaring in the sunlight, but most of the meadow was a blur.

He leaned forward, sniffing. He smelled.... was it a goat? Mikaeus's goat. But another scent... a lot like it, another goat?

Powder bleated happily, mimicking the playful noise that the goat-familiars made and bucked about in a small circle giddily. "A goat? Is it a goat!"

Laikaylah stepped back and let Mikaeus take over. She took a few steps away; close enough to overhear what was being said, but far enough that they two siblings could feel they were having a special big-brother-little-brother moment. She lowered herself to the ground, and tossed her mane invitingly; motioning for Glacier to come join her.

"Of course you can, son," he said reassuringly him. He hoped his patience and encouragement was enough for him; he felt a bit hopeless that he couldn't help him with these visions and such as well as Laikaylah, but his mate never made any indication that he wasn't doing a good job.

At her invitation, he took her lead and layed down in the grass next to her. He nibbled on her ear affectionately before swiveling his ears towards his two sons, eager to hear how this would play out.

"You're so smart," he said to Powder as they walked over to meet Denny and her new companion. "Denny is very special to me, do you know why?" he asked.

Powder never questioned or even noticed Glacier's hesitance and unfamiliarity with his visions. His pappa was strong and loving. If he didn't understand, if he couldn't see the pictures in the light, then Powder was happy to tell him about them. To make up stories with them and bond with him like that. Powder was very much an innocent colt, and never questioned the love both of his parents had for him - even if he had been found as a basket rather than the traditional way.

Powder kicked and bucked happily, converting his enthusiasm into energy as he trilled and bleated a few more times as Mikaeus confirmed his guess.

"A GOAT! Goat goat goat!" He trilled in a sing-song voice a few times before the spinning was starting to make him dizzy and he sat down awkwardly in a splay of legs and a loopy smile. "Nuh - uh, brother. Why is he so special? is he magic? Can he fly?"

Mikaeus couldn't help but smile affectionately at the energy of the little colt. He remembered being that young and excited about life; part of him still was. He wasn't jaded or anything; just grown up. But he chuckled at the antics regardless and lead Powder over to where Denny and the new companion were waiting.

"Fly?" he laughed. "No no, I don't think so," he said between his chuckles. He looked to Denny. "Denny, can you fly?"

Denny, usually pretty quiet, couldn't help but let out a little laugh of her own. "Fly?" she said, looking to Powder. "No, could you imagine? A flying goat!? What I thought!"

He gave her an approving smile, happy she was playing along. "No, Powder... but while Denny isn't magic or able to fly, she's still very special to me. You see.." Mikaeus lowered himself to the ground, tucking his legs under him so he could be closer to Powder's level, "Your Big Brother can't see. At all, and while Mommy and Daddy loves me just as much, it gets hard when you grow up to not be able to travel on your own like the others. And Denny helps me. She's always with me, and makes sure I don't fall into a hole or trip on a big rock," he explained.

"On top of that," he continued on, "She's an awesome friend. We get to explore the whole world together. How does that sound to you, Powder?" he asked, giving Denny an affectionate ear-nibble for good measure.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Laikaylah watched on, her heart swelling in her chest more and more. She almost felt she was going to try. She loved her children so much, and now Mikaeus was just being the best big brother she could imagine. What did she ever do to deserve such a loving and understanding family? She felt so blessed.

She closed her eyes and gave a little silent prayer to the spirits, and content and warm smile on her face as she leaned into Glacier. She hoped Powder would turn out being just as wonderful; especially with this help. She loved how much having Denny around really opened up the world of possibilities for Mikaeus and he was thrilled she was able to find another one.

Believe it or not, she sometimes even forgot that she didn't physically give birth to Powder. It sounds silly, but Powder was just such a perfect little gift from the Spirits it was nearly impossible to believe his blood wasn't of her blood. But in spirit - no one could deny the connection. Perhaps he was a bit pale, but he was undoubtedly hers. She laid her head over Glacier's back and began to nibble and fuss with his hair affectionately.

Glacier gave a hefty laugh at his son's unbridled enthusiasm for the whole exchange. He missed that perfect little utopia that was childhood sometimes; before you grow up and you have to deal with things. Not that he didn't love some of the perks that came with adulthood; such as his mate and his children. But with that bliss comes travel, sisters, love triangles, skinwalkers, blizzards, fights, fear... all things that generally are such a distant and abstract construct for such innocent little colts.

Glacier nuzzled with his mate and settled in to watch the exchange between his two sons. He was very happy Powder would have a second set of eyes wit him. Though he wasn't completely blind like Mikaeus, he knew it was still going to be difficult for him sometimes; especially in the summers and the bright days that came with it. He trusted Denny, and therefore he would trust her recommendation.

When Laikaylah began to play with his hair he shook his head in mock protest. He could pretend all he wanted; but he knew she knew he loved it.

Powder whinnied in amusement, "I can imagine, Denny!" He cheered as he imagined the earthy-smelling goats skipping about in the skies. Maybe somewhere goats could fly. Some soquili could fly, he had heard it. So why not goats? Though he only had gotten a decent look at the goats after the sun had gone to bed.

"You can't see at all, Mikey? Not even at night?" Powder said with an open mouth, "What about the colors? What about the stories and pictures the sun shows?"

He giggled, "Fall into a hole? That could be fun, though - what if it were a biiiiig hole? What if there was sweet clover in the hole or a lot of goats?"

"But - but if it's a bad hole - that's good. Denny keeps you out of bad holes! That sounds real nice!"
