It was early morning when Kaiser had set out from his sister's home to visit the tall mountains. Then, the sun had been just barely peaking over the land, and now it rested high overhead causing the various trees to cast haunting shadows around him. Brows knitting together, he peered around with a steady gaze, something about the area caused unease to well in the pit of his stomach. He'd never felt much comfort in the wood-lands, yet nothing bad had ever come to him. At least not yet in his young life. Drawing in a deep breath, Kaiser let it out quietly as he finally slowed the fairly quick walk he'd kept up this far in his journey. It was when his gaze fell on a nearby willow that he smiled. "Perfect." He commented to himself with a flick of his tail. Maybe he could rest there a bit.

Cato and Thane always woke at the crack of dawn to stretch and warm up. The mist was ebbing away, and the grass was still slick with dew. Cato was already in the "arena"; what he and Thane called their sparring field that was nearly a perfectly circle, the warms formed by the tree lines of willow trees. It was unlike Thane to be late, but Cato shrugged and began yanking up blades of lush grass, his stomach rumbling. The sun continued to rise, and the sun felt warm against his face. Where was Thane?
Shaking his mane out, Cato started with out him. Stretching his wings first, then his legs, Cato prepared himself for a few laps through the forest.
Quote:
Shrugging aside the hanging branches of the willow tree, Kaiser was more then ready to take a small afternoon nap when he heard something moving about. Ears tipping back momentarily, he felt the apprehension tug at him before he snorted and pushed it aside to 'investigate'. Surely if it was something sinister, they'd have noticed him long before he realized they were about. Peering about the clearing he drew back a step when his eyes fell on the winged stallion stretching. Something felt odd about the others appearance, but the other feathered Soquili he'd come across had always been fairly welcoming.
So with a smile he stepped from his small cover and called out. "Good afternoon!"
Quote:
Cato jumped, not expecting anyone but Thane to enter their little circle. He scowled at first, pulling his lips back from his teeth in a grimace. He was a grumpy gills when he first wakes up. "Its morning." He said flattly, his face going from a glower into a neutral expression. He flicked his kalona tail left and right, turning to face the stallion full on. He didn't seem a threat, and was friendly enough. He ignored the nagging in the back of his head that he should probably apologize, and simply stared, waiting for the stallion to either move forward or leave.
Quote:
Ears pinning back, and smile falling at the less then welcoming response, Kaiser tipped his head first right, and peered at the other in confusion before tilting it left. Perhaps he was wrong in his decision, but the fact the other hadn't simply chased him off was enough to give him means to stay. So after his shock faded, he found his friendly attitude return as his ears lifted. At least for now. "Morning?" His voice was laced with his surprise and he took a moment to peer up at the suns general position. Was it really still early in the day? "Huh, it would seem your right." Dropping his gaze back to the other he let out a chuckle. "It felt like I'd been walking half a day already!" Shaking his head, he walked casually towards the other.
"And here I thought it was time for a nap!" Kaiser commented with another rumble of laughter. "Damn, I was really looking forward to it, too." Stopping his approach when he was close enough to no longer shout, yet still giving the other his space; just incase. The young stallion inclined his head in greeting. "Let me correct myself, a very good morning to you I hope."
Quote:
Cato grunted in response and after a moment's hesitation, nodded. "Morning." He watched the stallion speculating. "Do you normally wander into others territories?" He shouldn't be so passive aggressive, he knew. But it was just too early in the morning for this, he thought sourly.
Before the stallion had a chance to answer, Thane came whistling through the willow trees, looking well rested, bright, and friendly. "Hey Cato, sorry I..." he trailed off, noticing the new arrival. Well that was certainly new. "Hey! A new guy!" Smiling wide, Thane came over besides Cato, looking between Cato's scowl at his tardiness and the stranger stallion's face. "Whats up, new guy!"
Quote:
Kaiser looked honestly stumped at his words, and was about to voice his reasoning when another walked on in. Shifting on his hooves, he flashed the other stallion a friendly smile, and bowed his head in a silent greeting. "Not much at the moment, was headed to the mountains when I happened upon this." Motioning briefly to the clearing with a laugh. "But I think I may have stumbled on your.." Pausing, eyes flashing towards the grumpy one, he found himself confused as to how to address them. Friends, companion? Could they be lovers? Not wanting to insult he cleared his throat lightly. "Territory unintentionally. Didn't mean to disrespect you." His words were directed at Cato, and he lowered his head slightly. Phew, he avoided that. He'd never forget the time Nana introduced him to a boy-ish mare and mistook her for a stallion. His side had ached for weeks where she'd kicked him.
Quote:
Thane chuckled, his deep voice rumbling. "Don't mind this guy." he butted his shoulder against Cato's roughly. "He's never the friendliest guy in the forest." He grinned wide at his best friend; damn near brother. "So, the mountains eh?" He turned towards the stallion again. "That must be a trek for a guy with out wings." He didn't say it maliciously by any means, and used it as more as an observation.
Cato grunted, deciding the comment would be better seen as an insinuation about the stallion's character.
Quote:
Watching the pair interact, Kaiser found himself feeling laughing along with the stallion's light-hearted comments, and when he spoke of wings the idea of insult never crossed his mind. He simply turned to peer over his shoulder casually with a flick of his woven tail. "It's a few days at most if I trot but my legs would die of exhaustion if I kept up that kind of pace within a few hours." Shaking his head, he shrugged his shoulders. "But it's a good adventure. Seeing the world, meeting new characters. Flying would be helpful but I feel like I'd get lonely." Kaiser wondered on that for a moment, being in the air like the birds that flew over the sea. It'd be an interesting experience, but he preferred his hooves firmly on the ground.
Quote:
Thane tilted his head. "Lonely? No, not at all--not when you have people to fly with. Its not different than walking, when you have enough traffic coming through."
Cato heaved a sigh and rolled his eyes. "Okay, enough of this. I've been waiting on your slow a** to get here. You're going to get fat if you keep this us."
Thane chuckled and nodded. "Fine, fine. New guy? Are you in?" He grinned wide, easy going, almost lazy.
Quote:
Having always lived on solid ground he found the image of flying through the air casually commenting on the weather as another flew past oddly hilarious, but kept his laughter in check with a grin. Yet his eyes shone with his amusement easily. So when Cato finally spoke up, he tilted his head curiously. Even more so when he was invited to join. "In for.." His ears perked forward as he simply let his comment trail off, hoping that the other would fill in the blank.
Quote:
Cato grunted again, and turned, beginning to stretch once more; this time his legs and neck.
Thane on the other hand kept his good-natured smile in place. "We like to... exercise here in the arena every morning. It keeps us fit, and focused. If you'd like to join, you're more than welcome." Thane was amused, watching the new guy curiously.
Cato had a mischievous glint in his eyes. He imagined how funny it would be to see the stallion's reaction to their idea of "exercise". Poor guy wouldn't know the first thing to do; he would probably run. The idea was hilarious to Cato, but he kept his face neutral all except a small grin forming at the corner of his mouth.
Quote:
"Exercise, huh? Hn, I guess I really could do with a bit of that." He joked, after all aside from his on and off traveling it wasn't like he ever set aside time to do something like this. And it was definitely better then the nap he was planning to take as soon as he's spotted the clearing. "I'd love to join for a bit." Kaiser nodded, shifting his weight on his hooves as he peered curiously between the two stallions. How bad could this really be? Yet looking at the beige males size alone made him wonder if he should have declined.
"So, what's first?" Exercise, this will be fun!

Thane began stretching at Kaiser spoke aloud. Feeling his tight biceps and hamstrings protest, not yet warmed up. The sun was already beginning to really arch, and Thane could see Cato impatiently staring at Thane--he must had been on the outs with Bernadette again. Those two fought like cats and dogs sometimes, and Cato used this as a way of releasing his frustration. "How about you watch the first bit Kaiser. Warm up." Thane, still pleasant smile in place, began his walk to stand about 10 feet from Cato, facing him full on.
Cato watched Thane now, completely honed in on him. His grin had grown into a full blown smile that was anxious and ready. It was like gearing up for a game when he was colt. "Ready?"
Thane, smile gone, was becoming. His only movement was his minute flickering of his eyes over Cato's form, watching to see what his first move would be. Cato always lunged first, the lumbering brute that he was. Very direct, and very powerful if you didn't have speed or the forethought to expect him. And so Cato did. After about four or five heartbeats, Cato's four large wings beat hard, and his body rocketed off the ground in the air. Before he had the opportunity to arch down and propel towards Thane, Thane too took to the air, swirling below Cato at a much quicker speed. He saw an opening at Cato's ribs, and with a lightening fast swat of his larger than average wings, Thane aimed to ram Cato directly on his left side.

"Alright." His tone was one of curiosity yet a hint of his confusion shone through. Yet feeling his questions would be better off left unsaid for the time being, he simply backed off a few steps towards the tree-line and turned to watch the two. The atmosphere around them seemed tense to him, like two still beings awaiting the other. Feeling a slight frown tip the corners of his mouth, Kaiser tipped his head to the right, only to startle back a step when the attacks began. Ears pinning back, he snorted as they took to the air for combat. This looked nothing like the exercise he'd imagined. Yet he'd already agreed to join in for a bit, and he was never one to enjoy running from a challenge. Shaking out his mane, he did as he saw and slowly stretched out his legs. Though his bright eyes never left the two in the sky.
Somewhere, he felt a twinge of jealously for the strength the two displayed. Mixed with the power their wings allowed them to put behind each attack, made him think on their limitations within himself. Letting out another snort, his tail flicked behind him. Maybe this was just how they warmed up. Yet that thought caused him to feel worried for just what exercise would be.

Thane's hit was pretty solid, but Cato was able to dodge just a little bite of the blow. Snarling, Cato flew up and up. His two wings were stronger than Thane's and he was easier carried to heights Thane struggled with. Once the distance was far enough, he arched over and shot downward, aiming for Thane. Guessing he would dodge the last second--he always did--Cato tried to guess by the position of his body. Closing in, he prepared his horns to slam into Thane's chest.

Giving a shake of his mane after he'd stretched his neck out thoroughly, Kaiser furrowed his brows as his watched the 'exercise' that happened before him. This seemed a bit overkill to testing each other in battle. The sounds of their wings heavy beats in the air and solid thuds whenever bodies collided were one thing, but the almost feral sounds that seemed to rip from the Kalona's throat set him more on edge then he was willing to admit. They looked about ready to tear each other apart! At least to his inexperienced eyes (Having never seen any major battles in his trek across the land.) it was difficult to pick out if they were really holding back for the others safety. Uneasily shifting on his hooves, Kaiser glanced briefly towards the tree-line, weighing the option of just walking off quietly. They wouldn't notice, and he doubted they'd search for a stranger. Well.. unless they really were some crazy individuals that lure unsuspecting Soquili in with this exercise just to murder them. "Hm.." Naah, they seemed friendly enough. (Could he really clasify the kalona-angeni as friendly? Maybe not-insane would be best.) Yet even amongst all the noise he found himself strangely in awe of how much power these two held. How could he turn away this chance? Besides working his muscles would make his frequent visits to the mountains easier. So with a flick of his tail he walked around the clearing to try and view the battle easier, though not without some comments of course. "You guys aren't going to kill each other, right?" He called out to them in question, his voice loud enough to carry over the sounds of their battle (He hoped.) but not loud enough to have him screaming like an idiot. (Again.. he really hoped.)
Out of all this, it never really crossed his mind that being quiet during this display might be best.

After months and months of training, Cato and Thane pretty well knew each other's tactics, and how best to handle them. Thane waited until the last second before Cato's impact to dodge, but Cato was getting faster as their training progressed. It didn't help he was distracted by new guy who kept talking to them. If Thane moved too soon, Cato would follow, so he tried to wait to the last possible moment--but he waited too long. He caught almost the entire blow from Cato, the air knocked out of his breath. He began to fall, but the last second was able to pull is wings out and roll into a glide away from Cato's advance. Panting, Thane shook his mane out and knew he'd feel that later. "Alright then," he said mostly to himself. Thane tried the same tactics as Cato. Gaining momentum, Thane pushed all of his force, moving to barrel right into Cato.

Ears flicked back as he turned his gaze up just in time to see Cato barreling down on the other, and though Kaiser wanted to see some kind of resistance in his decent, some sign that he would be able to soften his blow into the other if something happened. But even from the ground where he viewed them he could easily see the full intent he had in ramming the other. Eyes flicking to where the other just seemed to stay there waiting he found himself overcome with the urge to side-step, or so anything as if his movement would will the wind into action. 'What are you waiting for! Move!' He shouted inwardly, yet he never did, and instinctively Kaiser tensed his muscles as if expecting to be hit himself. Then last second he caught sight of the wind making an effort to get out of the way but too late. "Oooh." Kaiser hisses between clenched teeth, that looked like it hurt.. Watching as he fell from the sky and caught himself last second, he found himself letting out a breath he didn't know he'd been holding with a sigh of relief. Convinced that was where it would end, he started in a few steps towards them only to halt as they went right back to it. And it seemed like a rinse and repeat to what Cato had just hit him with. "Goo, go.." He urged under his breath as Thane began his decent. Now to see what the kalona-angeni would do differently..

Cato grinned, seeing what Thane was intending to do. However, being the stubborn mule that he was, Cato decided to meet him head on. Steeling his muscles, Cato flew up and up and up and turned, flying downward and arching so that Thane and himself were heading straight for each other, his grin still in place. It was an aerial version of chicken, you could say.
He saw the look in Thane's eyes that he hadn't lost sense. He was weighing the odds of who would come out hurt worse, just as Cato was. Cato was bigger than Thane, yes, but truly he wasn't as strong. Not as disciplined as Thane was, in most respects. But stubborn? Oh boy, there wasn't a rock head on this planet worse than Cato. The last thing he noticed was the wind rushing around him before the two collided.

Eyes widening when Thane's decent brought on Cato's ascent (and ultimately, decent straight for the other), Kaiser flicked his tail nervously as he glanced back and forth between them. Gods above they were completely crazy. If he'd been in that spot he would have froze well before his challenger got anywhere near him. After all, his honor and courage was not worth his life. Plus he'd never had the best luck in life up until this point, and he wasn't stupid to not know his limits. Since in his eyes if the two kept up their decent he doubted that they come out in the end safely. He'd seen other animals of the forest lose their lives to such moves, yet they had more of a reason to them a sparing session. Their stubborn natures could send them both to an early grave. Beating back the urge to yell at them for what they were doing, Kaiser shook his head and shifted his weight nervously as he watched the two. Already he could feel his heartbeat quicken, and brows pull together as he backed up a step. Determined to keep watch of the two until the end, Kaiser felt a steady sense of doom as neither moved even as they drew closer. So when they were beyond all hope (At least in his mind), he couldn't help but turn his head suddenly, his ears flicking back as the sound of their collision reached him.
Yet curiosity and slight worry to see if they both came out in one piece, had him peering back seconds later with a snort. "They're insane."
