Sleep

Would it be better to sleep forever?

The question rolled in and out of his head at varying frequencies at varying times. Never waking up unsettled him because it was unchangeable. Once he stepped through the door, even if he looked back he could never return to the land of the living and conscious, but there were days—and as the weeks passed he found the days knocked on his doorstep more and more—when he felt it would be better to curl into bed and never crawl out from beneath the sheets.

Too many days he found himself staring at the white-washed ceiling while his alarm clock buzzed incessantly next to his ear. Too many days Wilson struggled to climb out of bed and shrug on his clothes, to slip on the sunny smile he always wore, but somehow it always happened, and then he would run through his daily cycle on autopilot mode until once more he fell onto his mattress.

If he closed his eyes, moved his body to the very edge of the bed to leave room for another, stretched out his fingers and imagination, he could feel a slender hand slip into his. Cold at first, but gradually growing warmer and warmer until it spreads to the rest of his body and he can fall asleep, murmuring between soft breaths if I could sleep forever…

Liar

Lying isn’t good, but it doesn’t hurt to pull a white lie here and there, right? That’s what he grows up thinking starting from the ripe age of eleven. It starts when he realizes rather than holding onto the truth, it’s better to let it go—let it wither into dust rather than to listen to his parents metallic arguments and stare into their hollow eyes and sunken faces. IF he must relinquish is comfort zone for the sake of his loved ones, then so be it. Just keep smiling.

And he does, deceiving himself and others throughout high school and the beginning of college until he discovers that living a lie is not a life worth living.

But habits are difficult to break and soon he’s falling into the same cycle again. If he keeps faking it long enough then maybe even a lie can become reality. Yet the longer he smiles unfalteringly the more tired he grows. The gleam in his eyes dull like rusted silver and his lips feel heavier and heavier. It would be better to stop telling white lies because now they’re nothing more than a thin, twisted web he cannot tear himself out of. It would’ve been better to tell the truth, but it’s always on the tip of his tongue, never lingering.

Candidate

Once upon a time in a far off land, he was called Delta XII. He was only another featureless face within the crowd with only a vague title for his name and the dingy dagger in his gloved hands. There was nothing he could call his own, no memories and no relationships, not even his own face. The best he could do was stare into someone’s mask to see the pale reflection of his own, and if he angled his head at just the right angle he could see the mirrored words of his supposed name etched on the side. He was just another cog in the grand machine, a candidate among candidates and nothing more.

With nothing else to his name he wandered in the fog, his gloved hand reaching for nothing and nowhere. Names are a struggle to hold onto because there are no faces to pair them with. There are only numbers and random letters jumbled within his mind. Only a few managed to surface from the mixed heap. Delta VI. Delta VII. Where did they go again? Who were they again? He might have known the answer once upon a time, but the mind has always been a fickle thing. It always discards and consolidates memories, and before you know it you’ve forgotten everything that makes up you.

Family

His family thinks he’s dead (all except one, anyways). Sometimes he wonders what they’re doing now. Are they doing okay? Did his mother take it particularly hard when she heard about the flight, heard that he would never be coming back? She’s always been the paranoid type, imagining the worst to happen and always preparing for them. Was it hard to realize that they would be living longer than their own flesh and blood, at least in their minds?

Did his parents stay up late at night, lying restlessly in bed and staring at the ceiling? Did they replay the happy moments like a cam recorder in their head until the memories blurred together and faded away from use? Did they cry at the funeral and did they decide to stay in Wisconsin in their cozy, suburban home or did they finally decide to move somewhere warmer now that there was no one to tie them down to the chilling cold? If he snuck away to Wisconsin right now and knocked on his childhood home would he be greeted with familiar faces or new ones?

But most importantly, had his parents accepted reality for what it was and moved on? Would he just be another scar amongst their collection? He hoped so. It was better that way.
