[Theme: Beginner]

Concentrate. Three lines, over and over. One, two, three, precise, focused, and with intent. Sometimes it worked. Sometimes it didn't. It would have made more sense if the rune failed more frequently when Noah was tired or hungry or whatever, but it didn't seem to follow a pattern that he could see. Maybe, if he repeated the exercise enough times, he'd get a better handle on why it worked when it worked, why it failed when it failed. Was it a failure in his focus? Was he thinking about it wrong? Was it something else, something he hadn't yet learned how to notice?

He set his work down with a sigh, squeezed his eyes shut, scrubbed his hands across his closed eyelids; he rubbed his thumb into his palm, pressed his fingers back and open to relieve the cramp he could feel gathering. He wasn't done yet. He shook his hands out. Then he picked the rune and the stylus up again and set back to work. One, two, three, careful, in the same groove, deepening infinitesimally each time. If it worked, when it worked, it would come to life under his hands, and the thrill of success would be worth the slow and tedious repetition. Three lines, over and over. Concentrate.

[Theme: Fear]

Laz is hungry. Laz is always hungry. He is used to being hungry; it is barely something he even notices. It unsettled his human at first, made Noah uneasy and hungry as well, and it took nearly two weeks for the young human to notice that it didn't matter how many times a day he ate; the faint and nagging sense of hunger that lingered in the back of his mind never went away.

When he realized that that hunger belonged to Laz, Noah had been alarmed. Do I need to fight more often?

NO. I AM HUNGRY. IT IS WHAT I AM, Laz had replied. I LIKE TO FEED. DON'T WORRY YOUR HEAD. I WILL ALWAYS EAT. BUT I AM ALWAYS HUNGRY.

Noah had stopped overeating after that, which had made things better. The human had been straining his body unnecessarily. It could handle it, and Laz could make sure his handler did not get sick, but too much food made Noah sluggish and slower, and Laz didn't approve of that.

There was a time when he had wanted food in the same way, hunger, endless hunger and eating what presented itself, but that is no longer true. It is a cleaner and more efficient hunger now. Laz does not mention it, but it pleases him that his human is timid and easily startled. He feeds daily on a steady diet of little drops of fear.

[Theme: Nightmares]

grasping gripping dark in the dark little claws just like thorns except that they move, dance, skate and dig on skin, dig in and pull and huRT IT HURTS IT HURTS MOM IT HURTS MOMMY IT'S LAUGHING IT'S LAUGHING AND HURTING ME AND NOBODY IS COMING TO FIND --

Noah hurtled gasping out of sleep, grabbing blindly for the lamp, missing the switch three times before slapping it almost by accident. The dream. Always the same dream.

WHO IS HURTING YOU, Laz demanded, and his voice sounded thick and bubbly, frothy and sticky, and Noah shuddered involuntarily, slid out of bed and stood swaying on shaky legs in the half-lit room. Nobody, he said. Nobody's hurting me, it's just a dream. He couldn't stop the convulsive shivering. "It's just a dream," he repeated.

IT HURT YOU. I'LL EAT IT, Laz snarled. I'LL GRAB IT AND SHAKE IT. I'LL PULL IT APART. EAT IT IN BITS. IN LITTLE BITS SO IT HURTS MORE AND MORE AND MORE BECAUSE IT HURT YOU. The weapon's everpresent hunger surged, accompanied by a wet tearing sound and a snapping, clicking noise that resonated through Noah's head like a physical sound.

"It was a dream. It was just a dream. Laz, it was just a dream," Noah whispered. He made himself move, all the way over to the door to turn on the overhead light, then to the dresser to get out a book. He wouldn't be sleeping again tonight.

[Theme: Death]

There was a weird, sick-sweet garbage smell in the back of the shed. Noah had noticed three days ago and hadn't thought much of it, but as the smell grew stronger, his curiosity got the better of his uneasy disgust. Before he started his chores, he poked around among the shelves, holding his breath against the dust and stale air and the smell, that gross pervasive smell that he couldn't source and couldn't identify.

It took him a full ten minutes to think of looking behind the shed instead of inside it. He'd found the smell, he realized. He pulled the neck of his shirt up over his nose and mouth, holding the fabric there as a makeshift filter. It didn't help much. The garter snake was dead, of course, and its corpse had been rotting in the summer sun for days, and that was why it stunk so badly. His brain babbled on about bacterial propagation and insect populations and scavengers. His stomach churned. He wasn't going to throw up, he instructed himself firmly.

He'd seen dead animals before. He'd seen the sad little lumps of stillborn kittens when one of the barn cats had had a difficult litter, and last year one of the neighbors' dogs had expired of old age, and sometimes the cats killed mice and birds, and he'd grown up on a farm, he knew where dinner came from, but this, this was different somehow. There was something ugly and horrifying about the bloated line of rotting meat in the grass, buzzing with flies and gleaming with a disgusting shine in the golden late-afternoon sunlight.

He didn't want to look at it, and he didn't want to think about it, and he especially didn't want to think about how it somehow reminded him of the way the shadows squirmed in the corners of the stables late at night. He backed away and fled to his chores, and didn't go near the shed for another week.
