The air felt clean for once - bereft of bad vibes and tension. Maybe it had something to do with the charm she wore around her neck, maybe it was due to her good mood when she woke up that morning and didn't land in a heap of dirty laundry and used candles. Regardless, Angel faced the day with a positive attitude, armed with the knowledge that she would be meeting one of her cousins for lunch that day - a rarely seen and rarely heard of Chava Burningham. Angel was delighted to hear a reciprocation to her invitation, if not a touch too elated about reacquainting herself with the bundle of negativity she knew from many years past.

Angel handpicked the cafe after perusing a stolen copy of the yellow pages for local businesses. She appreciated its quaint setting, the striped awnings extending over wrought-iron tables set for two, and the heinous backstory pinning the cafe as the site of a murder many years past. But as she surveyed her surroundings, from the unassuming windows set in an old brick building to the petite umbrellas shading the larger tables, she found no sign of dark energies haunting the place. Too bad, really; she could've used a good poltergeist to reinvigorate her about now. Perhaps she'd invite Chava ghost hunting, if they still retained a decent relationship these days.

For now she sat impatiently, practically drowning in the loose, draping fabric of her navy blue cardigan. Beneath it she wore a black corset atop a cream long-sleeved cotton shirt, with the top few buttons left undone. Her legs crossed impatiently under the table and she clicked the pointed heel of her black boot against the sturdy support stand. Her cousin should be arriving any moment now, she figured, but with her watch constantly broken due to demonic possession she couldn't be sure. However, she was certain she left before high noon. Good enough.

Finally she spotted a figure quite different from the one she remembered, one she thought might match her vague memories of her cousin. Initially Angel thought to let the stranger pass, simply stare through them and wait further, but a nagging suspicion forced her to react. Besides, if she screamed toward the girl and received an unsavory response, she could pass it off as an invitation to the girl behind her.

Or just call her a b***h and move on.

"Chava!" She called elatedly, and waved emphatically from her table.

The last time she had seen Angel, Chava had been a brown haired, good little girl who had things going great in her life, or so she thought.

She had been dating Keren and things had just been going great, of course, that fell through and it had been time for a major overhaul in her life, so away had gone the brown hair, and he name of Chava. She went by Lavender now, to most people that was…but still. There were the few people that called her Chava still.

The black haired girl looked over when she heard the name and spotted her cousin at a small table, a smile forming on her face a moment later.

Well. Angel was still undoubtedly the coolest cousin anyone could have, so that was a good thing.

She made her way over to the table and sat down. “Hey there stranger. It’s been long enough, don’t you think?” She laughed and ran her fingers through the side of her hair that wasn’t shaved and laughed. “I’m actually pretty surprised you could tell it was me. I guess my face hasn’t changed all that much…save for the piercings. How have you been, cuz? Are you back for good this time?”

"Oh I couldn't tell it was you, dear. The spirits told me to take a stab in the dark, that's all. You could've been a real stranger, for all I knew." Reaching forward, Angel brushed her fingertips across the shaved hair, surprised at its softness. She drew back and laced her fingers together, with her thumbs pinning her strange amulet into her hands. "Look at youuuuuu," she cooed with a smile. "I can't believe it. Shaved head, dyed hair, piercings everywhere. It's like you've grown up right before my eyes." She smiled broadly, approval evident in her eyes.

"I think Destiny City has enough weird phenomena to keep a girl tethered for a while! Last time I was here, the Tower alone had more supernatural happenings in midday on a tour. But now? Hohoho, I could turn a corner and there's some indescribable beast staring me down like a hot meal. Needless to say, I put up the flat in London and moved right in." Her explanation came more simplified than the truth, but the nuances in her life had no place in the conversation. "You wouldn't believe what I've seen here already!" An emphatic fist hit the ill-balanced metal table, and it rocked in response.

A waiter passed, and Angel flagged him down loudly to order a hot cup of darjeeling tea. Afterward she turned her gaze on her reinvented cousin, taking in all the changes as she recognized them fully. "What about you, love? Your everything changed on the outside. Are you trying to keep your cousin from recognizing you? There's got to be a story behind it." Angel considered the changes fitting for Chava, as now she looked to be discovering herself on a greater level than before. Still, the fact that she underwent such an overhaul... What happened to prompt it?

The girl grinned. There had been a million and one changes in her life since the last time she had seen Angel, and there was really no time to go through them all. “Oh you know. You change for one reason or another…for me personally…I was just tired of being Chava. I had a bad breakup with my girlfriend and I decided to get rid of Chava completely, and thus…” She gestured to herself and made a proud face. “Lavender was born…and I’ve been Lavender ever since so, that’s what’s going on.”

Angel did have a big point though, this city had its fair share of crazy and bizarre things, and she had been wondering when her cousin would finally choose to return, and to be honest, she had been pleased as anything to hear that the girl was back in town.

Lavender gave a grin and shook her head. “I wasn’t trying to keep you from recognizing me, just…making myself…more of…myself, I suppose. Everyone has to find themselves at some point, and I guess this is just me. It turns out that I really like makeup now. You know…even though I used to hate it when I was younger. I remember when my mom tried to get me dressed up for picture day and I would go crazy trying to get the stupid stuff off of my face…well now I’m working really hard to be an internet makeup star. Oh yeah.”

When the order was placed, Lavender ordered herself a hot chocolate. There was nothing wrong with keeping it classy, that was for sure.

Angel smiled warmly as her cousin introduced herself with an entirely different identity. "Following in my footsteps now, are we? Oh, you don't know how happy I am to see your face again..." She laughed softly. "You know, I managed the same trick myself not terribly long ago. You remember me as Angel Voss, but I finally tired of all the bullocks my papa gave me for my beliefs, so I told his last name to shove it and got my own. Angel Aimless now, and it's all over my legal documents. It's like a breath of fresh air, isn't it? We can make our own lives, however we please." Preaching to the choir, of course - Lavender sported not only a name change but a physical reinvention of herself, which amounted to far more than Angel's attempts to sever familial connections.

Leaning forward slightly, Angel rested her elbows on the table as she spoke. "Oh don't I remember! Wasn't it at our last family gathering that I had to sit on you just to crimp your eyelashes? Or was that the time before? It was awfully long ago, I remember that. But, oh I think you almost cried when I got through with you - all that eyeshadow and eyeliner and lipstick, and you just about burst from it. Poor girl, I thought at the time, but look how you turned out now! I wonder if that had anything to do with it. Maybe not, but you look like you're better with the stuff than me now. Go figure, eh? I should ask you to do my face in the morning." Blue eyes traced all the new features Lavender-formerly-known-as-Chava added to her repertoire, and the uniqueness of the look sold the occultist on the new changes.

"An internet makeup star? Look at you, carving your own path like that. What's your username? I'll try to look you up if I can still find my laptop... It might've met a terrible death beneath all the research I've been collecting over the years." Offering a dismissive shrug, Angel expressed exactly how broken up she was over losing track of a coveted piece of technology. While the internet proved a useful resource for some of her work, the bulk of it lay in texts and firsthand experiences. What dotted the internet was, regrettably, a host of false references or demons of old incorporated into videogames. A bastardization of her beliefs, to be sure, but it looked like just about every religion suffered at the hands of game designers.

Soon the hot chocolate and tea arrived in haste, and Angel snatched up the cup abruptly while her free hand opened the tea bag's package deftly. She dunked the bag into the hot water as she spoke, absently eyeing the color that muted the bottom of the cup. "I can still trust you to keep a secret, right? You were always so good about staying tight-lipped about things." Pursing her lips together, Angel blew across the steaming surface of the tea.

Lavender nodded. “Angel Aimless, hm? I like it. It has a really nice ring to it.” When her cousin reminded her of all the times she had despised make up when she was younger, she laughed richly. “Maybe I’ll withhold my username just so you can’t go on my page and embarrass me with all of those stories. That’s the last thing I need in my life.” She stuck out her tongue and shook her head. “But really, I’ll write it down later for you, if you’re going to be staying in the area, I’m sure you’ll be able to see it another time, and maybe I can even try some of my styles out on you.”

When the hot chocolate came, the girl took it happily, taking a sip and sighing.

“I’m good at keeping secrets, what’s up?” She looked at her older cousin with a confused, but happy expression. Secrets were always the best thing to hold on to. Gossip was always a fun thing to hear, especially when it came from someone older and cool, like Angel.

Angel feigned concern for eavesdroppers as she glanced around before leaning in toward her cousin. Long strands of blue-black hair threatened to dip into her tea. "I'm going to write a book." It sounded so benign. "I've been across so many hauntings back in London, they're almost blasé compared to Destiny City. But not many people can just take a hop across the pond and visit the most ******** up city in the world, you know? So I'm going to write about it. All those bizarre times where you catch a shadow in the alley, and you realize it has eyes... All the weird boys and girls dressing up to camp out rooftops... I'm going to publish it someday. Then the world can read about things a thousand times stranger than fiction. Neat, isn't it? I haven't actually started on anything yet, but once I get enough material..."

Which led her to her next point. As she reclined backward in her chair, Angel pressed a pair of fingers to her cheek in temporary contemplation. Should she spring such a question on a cousin she only recently reconnected with? Well, why not? Chava - Lavender - grew up significantly since they last saw each other, and was shaping up to be very much her own person. Why not invite her a little closer to the world of the occult?

"If you're up to it, would you want to come with me while I gather information for it? No pressure, of course, it's dangerous as all hell, but don't you think it's a skosh exciting? Not only would you come face-to-face with all the weird phenomener that happen around the city, but you'd be published. Think of what that means for your internet stardom!" Brimming with excitement, Angel shifted forward to the edge of her seat. She nearly knocked her tea over as she pressed her hands against the table in avid excitement. "I've already got a few places lined up that I'd want to investigate, and if you have any suggestions, I'm all ears. Most of my leads were stolen from blogs, anyway. You'd be surprised what people blog about around here. No recipes for scones or biscuits, just straight up streets running red with blood and weird ash compounds."

Maybe she should shut up now. However, Angel typically failed miserably at stifling her own ramblings, so she took a sip of tea instead.

"Anyway, the offer's open in case you find it to your liking. You can just tell your folks that you're spending the night at my place; I don't think they've heard a terrible lot of rot about me anyway. And if they have, just tell them that I'm getting over it or something. What they don't know can't hurt them, right? Even if it ends up being just that, we could have a great lot of fun, just the two of us." Flashing a smile, she took another sip of tea.

Lavender just stared at her cousin for a few moments, letting that all sink in. She wanted to write a book? Well. That was really kind of neat…but going out in the city after dark to find material for the book, no that sounded kind of dangerous.

There was one rule that Lavender held for the City, and it was one that she followed as closely as she could after watching all of the stuff they posted on the news. Lavender didn’t let herself go out after dark really. She was a big, tough girl, but honestly…she had her whole life ahead of her, and until she got herself a nice car, she was keeping herself firmly planted in her dorm room when the sun set.

But…but still. Published…

Angel was right. That would do wonders for her internet fame…and maybe invite real fame into the mix.

The girl took a long drink of her hot chocolate, and slowly nodded. “Yeah. Yeah that sounds like a pretty wild adventure, and I’d love to help you out with this book. When do I start?”

There would be no way they’d get killed or anything with this. That kind of stuff happened to stupid people. And with Angel there, and herself…well. There would be no stupid for miles. Lavender grinned. “I’m actually, getting kind of excited for this. A real book? This’ll be fantastic.”

"I knew you'd be interested." Angel flashed her cousin a knowing smile - one that spoke of pride and relief. "You were always a touch more adventurous than our other cousins. Strange how that works out, eh? Anyway, if you give me a couple weeks, I should have a few locations charted out. Interestingly enough, there's not a great deal of common haunting locations in the city, even though there's about a thousand reports of supernatural sightings and activities all over the place. Usually in rathole locations, too - bars, clubs, all that rubbish."

After drawing another sip of tea, Angel continued in earnest. As she spoke, the creases around her lips hinted at a smile. "I want to stick to more populated arears whenever possible, especially since you'll be with me. Getting killed won't help much in the long run, either. I'll give you my number, and when it's time to slip out for the night, just let your folks know that you're heading over to my place for tea and a movie or something of the sort. They shouldn't think too terribly much about it. Besides, I can always come over; I haven't spoken to your mum in ages. After that we'll visit my flat, pick up my toys, and head out for a spot of fun." Naturally the pair of weeks to prepare included time for her to venture out on her own - to learn the risks involved with her ventures before roping her cousin into her life-threatening escapades.

The Londoner turned her attention to her purse, from which she produced a single handmade business card outlining her name and contact information. She handed it to Lavender by pursing the card between index and middle fingers. "Keep in touch, love. It'll be a great opportunity - for both of us."

With a satisfied sigh, Angel sifted around in her purse once more to produce still-unfamiliar American bills to cover the cost of their drinks as indicated by their receipt. "It was good to finally see you again, Lavender. That name suits you much better, by the way. Bet it feels just delightful to finally have your own identity, doesn't it? As much as I'd like to stay and chat, I've got quite a few errands to run if you're going to join me on my searches. Take care, alright? Save the dark for when we're together." After flashing one last smile at her cousin, Angel stood and pushed her chair toward the table.

In passing, a single fingernail touched down on the streak in Lavender's hair. "Looks good on you, by the by," she offered as she departed from the shop.
