Lenore looked up from the newest book she was reading at looked over at Mephistopheles. "Hey, Mef. I just realized we've never been to Inhinx before. You wanna go?"
"What brought this on?"
"I just realized that we've been to Katarina, and we've been to Motterosa, but we've never been to Inhinx. It's supposed to be abandoned, so that means it's probably crawling with ghost-type pokemon. At least, that's how it would go in the books."
The dusclops sighed, knowing he wouldn't be able to change the girl's mind. Despite how she looked, and how she sometimes was, she was incredibly stubborn once she had set her mind on something. She'd probably read something about Inhinx in the book, which would only make it worse. Asking if he wanted to go was merely nicer than ordering him to. "Very well."
Lenore grinned. "Great. Let's get some supplies and go, then. It'll take a while to get there." The girl closed the book and set it aside."We should probably leave Shina a note that we're leaving, too."
With the note written, Lenore headed out to get supplies for their journey.

As Lenore and Mephistopheles neared the Meteore Freezeland, they happened upon a camp. There, a single backpacker was warming himself by the fire. Hearing their approach, he stood up.
"Hail, friend! It's going to be nightfall, soon. Perhaps you'd like to share my camp? Safety in numbers, especially with Hell-Hoot so close."
Lenore tilted her head at the man's statement. "What's a 'Hell-Hoot'?"
The man made no effort to cover up his surprise. "You haven't heard? Hell-Hoot is a legend 'round these parts. A monstrous hoothoot, wingspan as large as two normal hoothoots', and a vicious streak that would put a hydreigon to shame. He lives in the forest to the northeast, so no one really comes out this far. Take a seat, and I'll tell you the legend." He motioned to the ground on the other side of the fire from him. Intrigued, Lenore did as she was told.
As the fire crackled and popped, the man steepled his fingers as he began his story.

"Hell-Hoot grew up in the forests within the Meteore Freezeland. He was the only hoothoot in the forest, having been forgotten by his flock as they left the forest. As a result, the nameless hoothoot was drawn to the flock of pidgey that inhabited the forest to escape his loneliness. The pidgey, however, did not return his interest in fraternizing, and they shunned him. He continued to try to interact with them, and they progressed into attacking him to get him to leave. Driven mad by loneliness, the hoothoot snapped."
The man paused to get a drink, his face illuminated by the campfire as the sun fell. "He descended upon the flock of pidgey in the dead of night while they slept, and systematically broke each of their necks. He gathered the corpses together, and he was no longer alone. After a few days, however, the corpses began to rot. Fearing the loneliness he had just escaped, the hoothoot gathered up some twine, and after tanning the pidgey's hide, he skinned them and made himself a coat. Feeling the warmth the coat gave him, he smiled softly. 'Now we can be together. Forever....'"
The man looked directly at Lenore. "They say that, every night, Hell-Hoot lurks in those forests, waiting for hapless victims to wander in... and never come out."
Lenore stared back at the man. "How do you know that's true if no one was around to see it?"
The man laughed. "Well, I suppose I don't, at that!" His demeanor became serious once again. "But people have gone into that forest, and haven't returned."

Lenore stood up, dusting off her shorts. "Well, thanks for the story, but I should get going. I've got places to be." She gave the man a small wave as she began walking off. "Bye." The man merely shrugged and went back to warming his hands.
After some time walking, Mephistopheles looked down at Lenore. "We're going the wrong way."
Lenore kept walking. "I know."
The dusclops sighed. "You're going to the forests, aren't you?"
"Of course."
Mephistopheles shook his head as he trudged after the girl.

The duo entered the forest and were immediately greeted with a cackle from deep within. Pulling four pokeballs from her pocket, Lenore sent out Elesh Norn, Jin-Gitaxias, Sheoldred, and Urabrask. " Alright, there's supposed to be a huge hoothoot somewhere in the forest. I want you guys to find him. Alright?" The assembled pokemon nodded their understanding and went deeper into the forest as Lenore followed after on foot. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After a short time, however, Hell-Hoot found them. The hoothoot sent a gust of sweltering heat at Lenore, but Elesh Norn quickly appeared and shielded the girl. The darkrai's eyes began to glow and rocks materialized in the air before flying at the hoothoot, knocking it into a tree. At the sound of combat, Sheoldred and Urabrask returned and sent volleys of blood at the downed Hell-Hoot. Next came Jin-Gitaxias, who sent a ball of sludge at it. Finally, Mephistopheles appeared, and a lance of darkness appeared in his hand. Rearing it back, he prepared to throw it at the hoothoot but Lenore ran in front of him, shielding the exhausted hoothoot. " Stop it!"

"Leave him alone!" The girl shouted at all of her pokemon.
Mephistopheles stared at the girl incredulously. "You can't seriously think you can be friends with this one, too, Lenore? You heard the legend. It's vicious, even more so than Sheoldred!" The caterpie scoffed at the mention of her name. "I admit you were right about all the others, but despite how amazing that is, I don't think you understand how far gone this hoothoot is!"
Lenore glared at her pokemon silently. "I said, 'Leave him alone.'" After a moment, the gathered pokemon backed away from the beaten hoothoot one by one. The girl then turned to face the hoothoot with sadness in her eyes. "I'm so sorry. They were doing what they thought was best - please, don't fault them for it." Kneeling down, she placed a soothing hand upon the hoothoot's chest. The hoothoot, too exhausted to fight, simply stared up at the girl. The girl looked over her shoulder at the dusclops, who even now was ready to kill at a moment's notice. "I was like him, once."
Mephistopheles shook his head. "You were never like him, Lenore. Don't compare yourself to him."
Lenore shook her head back. "I was, though. Before you came to me, Mef, a long time before. I was so angry. All the other kids had parents, but I didn't. 'Why?', I asked myself. But I had no answer. I just hated everything. The other kids, the adults, everything. I threw shards of broken glass at the adults, sometimes. I didn't really have a reason to do it, thinking back. They hadn't done anything wrong. It wasn't their fault I had no parents. But I did it, anyway. But then a kind-hearted traveler taught me to read. For the first time I could remember, someone was nice to me. She told me to stop being mean to the adults and other kids, and I listened, because she was all I had. But then she left, and I was alone, again." The girl wiped away errant tears before continuing. "But then I met you, Mef. For the second time in my life, I had a friend. And even if things went badly after that, I still think meeting you was the greatest thing that ever happened to me."
She looked down at the hoothoot again, and smiled softly. "It's not that he's vicious, it's just that hurting people is all we knew. It was our only way to express ourselves. He just needs someone to tell him he's not alone, someone to stay with him. He's been alone so long that he doesn't know how to act around people and other pokemon." The girl pulled an empty pokeball from her pocket and placed it beside Hell-Hoot. "I don't know if I can be that person. I'm still broken, too. But I want to try. I want to try to be the person who saves someone, instead of being the person who is saved. But if you think you can trust me, then I'd like to be your friend."
The beaten hoothoot was motionless for a moment, but he gave the pokeball a quick peck and was absorbed inside without a fight.
