A dark wood. Not his favorite place to spend his time, but here he was. Something, some feeling had drawn him here. Was his brother here? Perhaps in trouble? That would make sense. Kyad was the protective sort. Always had been, always would be. He was also close to his twin, and spent more of their foalhood than he cared to think about getting Lorimer out of one scrape or another. His brother was a little too dramatic for his own good at times, and he kept Kyad on his hooves.
He wasn't sure then if his brother really was here and needed him, or if his imagination was running away with him, or something else was going on. He just knew that something had his flesh crawling and creeping, that every instinct was on high alert, and that despite wanting to be anywhere else, he was moving further and further into the dark wood, moving carefully. He kept alert for danger... or for his brother in danger.

She ran as fast as she could, her torn wing dragging behind her. The creature chasing her slid through the trees, making less noise than she was. She wasn't focused on anything but escaping. And so focused on escape that she didn't even notice the large hulking mass before she barreled into it.

He saw the mare just before she barreled into him. He braced and pivoted so that he cushioned her body as they connected and slowed her, without stopping her short. He led her through the turn so that when she stopped, she'd still likely be on her hooves, but he would be between her and what ever had been chasing her. His flank smarted, but that couldn't matter now. Clearly the mare was in some danger. He would defend her. From whatever it was that was chasing her. It was what he did. "Run," he advised her, squaring himself to face the direction she had come from. "If you can get away, do. I'll guard your back," he said to her, fully intending to stop whatever was chasing her from getting past this point. Even if it cost his life, she would be safe. Lorimer would understand.

Lian didn't fully see him. All she knew was that she had rammed into another creature, one that wanted to protect her. She had a sudden flash of what would happen if she left him. Fear or vision, she wasn't sure, but she could see him laying on the forest floor, his blood feeding the trees around them.
"No," she gasped, twisting around him and trying to push him. "Run... you must... it'll kill you!"

"I will not abandon you," he said. "Run, if you wish me to follow, I will, but you take the lead. We don't have time to argue, now go!" He didn't look back at her. His ears would tell him if she listened, pun not intended in such dire circumstances, if she ran. His eyes and his nose, and the rest of his hearing, as though such a thing could divided and portioned out, was focused ahead, towards whatever had been chasing her. Not knowing what it was, the form it would take or how it would approach meant he had to be wary. He had to be alert. He had to protect her. No matter the cost.

A sinister laughter filled the suddenly quiet forest. With a small whimper, she turned and half limped, half ran a few steps, glancing over her shoulder to make sure he followed... and clipping her shoulder against a tree she hadn't noticed in her haste.

He turned and went after her, seeing her clip the tree, he winced as if the pain was his own. "Caution," he called to her. "I have your back, focus on the ahead." The laughter bothered him, but he would not look back, his ears would be his rear guard. It was the best he could do, he had to make sure there was no one waiting to cut her off at the front. He needed to protect this mare. He needed to protect her, to take care of her. Everything in him called at him to protect, called to him to guard, and now it was calling to him to protect and guard her.

She weaved through the trees, stumbling over rocks and roots until they burst out of the forest and into a river. She'd splash until she couldn't run anymore and instead had to swim. She glanced back to make sure he was still there behind him.

He was right behind her, saw the water, he winced. "Can you fly enough to get past?" he called to her. She was injured yes, one wing badly hurt, but were her others sound enough for her to be able to fly? He really really hoped so. It would be easier to defend her if he did not have to worry about her drowning as well. Then he could just focus on getting himself across. If she could fly...if not...well, he hoped to baskets she could swim!

"Cross the water," she gasped out. "Hurry! We'll be safe on the other side." She hoped, at least. Instinct was driving her now, and she could only pray to the spirits that the skinwalker chasing them would stop at the water's edge.

He hoped desperately that she was right. He followed her, trusting her even as he tried his hardest to protect her. He didn't believe they would be fully safe on the other side. He would still be alert and aware. He would be on guard until he himself was sure that she was safe and well. He had to protect her.

She managed to make it across the river to the other side and turned to watch her would be protector. Her breath came heavily, and her began to darken at the edges as exhaustion and pain began to weigh on her.
On the opposite bank, Kali stopped just at the waters ledge, watching her prey get away. She could have gone after them, was almost tempted to... but no.. it wasn't worth it, she decided.

He pulled onto the shore, and stood over her, looking back the way they came. His eyes narrowed at Kali, he wanted to shout to her that this mare was protected, but he knew better. He knew too many would see that as a challenge, and pursue where otherwise they might yield. So he took a stance he had used before, that had worked in the past. He stood in a way that said "We are too much trouble, you may win, but the cost would be high." This allowed a predator with pride to still walk away, where a challenge might have to be checked or met. This would allow the other to feel she could leave, to feel she SHOULD leave. HE forced himself to appear calm, to keep his breathing slow and even.

Kali snorted. Two bird brains... no, she wasn't going to waste her time on such measly prey. She turned and left without a backward glance.
Seeing the skinwalker leave, the last of her strength finally left her. Lian collapsed on the river bank.

He moved so that he could watch the river bank and still be between her and the main bulk of anything that might be dangerous on this side, so that she was alongside the water, and he was behind her, watching the way they had come, ears alert, as he leaned down to nuzzle her face gently, reassuringly. "Are you alright?" he asked softly, ears still pricked for the slightest sounds, including her answer, should she be in shape to give one.
