She'd sort of misjudged this youma, thought Megiddo, which was probably putting it lightly. That, or the week-old snow that was still clogging the alleyway was just determined to ******** up her night, because while she sank with every step, the yeti-like creature chasing her continued unimpeded, drawing ever closer to the page.

She'd really misjudged her path, Megiddo realized, when the alley turned into a dead end. "********," she hissed, her breath clouding the air in front of her. She looked around, hoping for some kind of fire escape or ledge - anything she could get to. The buildings were too high to jump from a standstill. "s**t," she hissed. She could hear the youma closing in. At least she'd drawn it away from the metro stop. The young page had no plans on being a martyr, at least not tonight, but Gunn expected her to die for the cause if need be and Megiddo was drinking the kool-aid.

As the youma came into sight, lumbering towards her like a gorilla, Megiddo raised her pitcher. She was only going to get one chance to land this hit, so she needed to make the most of it. Whack the youma square between the eyes and she bet she could stun it, then fall back somewhere safe and come up with a better plan to take it ******** YOU, YOU ******** ********," hollered the page, hurling the pitcher. It struck true, and the youma roared and stumbled backwards. She feinted left, dodged right, scooped her weapon quickly up from where it had fallen in the snow, and tore off back down the alley. The sound of the youma's heavy footfalls told her the stun had worn off and it was giving chase.

"s**t s**t s**t s**t s**t," said Megiddo under her breath as she ran, praying for a fire escape, or a low terrace, or divine intervention. "s**t ******** s**t ******** all this s**t."

It had taken him a while to follow the echoes down the maze of back alleys, the frantic footsteps were coming from all directions and the string of panicking swears sounded like an army of voices.

Gehenna had really only been hoping to dip his toes back in the water but instead he was dashing down alleys as fast as his mass would go, the metal of his armor answering the echoes that taunted him. He knew the sound of panic. There were things in this city that made the bravest people he'd ever met cower at night.

The first time he saw them was through a glimpse of a building window. First just her, running, the mouth synced up more-or-less to the rebounding echoes. It was only a split second before the yeti-youma blurred past in pursuit and he bit his lip against a curse that would surely give him away. He twisted down a side alley and tried to use his years old knowledge of an only semi-familiar alley system. He missed his first chance to catch them.

Then he saw an intersecting alley up ahead. He pushed himself as hard as he could after he rounded that corner, only halfway down as he watched her whip past the open end with a string of curses in her wake. His teeth grit as he pushed himself, barreling with all the force he had. As the youma passed the end of the alley, all two hundred-plus pounds of Gehenna plowed into its shoulder. His teeth jarred on impact but he earned a groan as the yeti-thing's other shoulder knocked into the opposite wall. For a breath, he was pleased.

Then a well placed back hand from a super-ape youma sent him whirling into a nearby set of garbage cans. His armor clattered loudly against the sides, but as the metallic ringing died out he was laughing to fill the silence. He pushed himself up onto his feet slowly, granted a small reprieve as the youma reeled from the second stun. <********," Gehenna breathed, the thrill of taking the hit already setting his veins to a buzz.

The squire came out of nowhere, it seemed like, but Megiddo was grateful for him. His distraction gave her enough time to recover her wits and get a better handle on her pitcher. "Holy s**t, am I glad to see you," she hollered over towards him and the mess he'd made of the trash cans. One of these days, she promised herself, she'd be rescuer and not rescuee.

The youma was coming back around now, lumbering towards Megiddo, and boy did it look pissed. She decided to meet it half way, charging forwards with her pitcher raised, leaping as she brought her weapon down, squarely, between the youma's eyes.

CLUNK.

It seemed dizzy, she observed, as she skidded to a landing by the ruined trash-cans, but it didn't seem any closer to being dead. "Oh, ******** it," she growled, looking hopefully towards the squire. "If you've got any ideas for how to make this thing incredibly dead, then I would love to hear them."

But hey, at least she was surviving so far.

The dizziness from his head smash was clearing right as she called out her praise. He'd leaned one hand against the brick of the building at his side, shaking his head back and forth to convince his eyes they were still alive and had a job to do. He glanced up just in time to see her whack it one more time, thankful for the distraction.

"Good of you to come back," he muttered, pushing himself all the wall and crouching with his spiked gauntlet held chest level before him. He could maybe take it if he could initiate his rage, but the last time he'd done that he ended up slugging Nemesis in the head as well. He didn't want to hurt the page - he somehow doubted her skull was as thick as the Senshi of Decay's. His eyes flashed up around them as she bounded back over, trying to get a sense of where they were.

"There's an old warehouse a couple blocks west," he said quickly, stepping up to her side, "if we could lure him that way, they've got an open elevator shaft that I think we could knock him into." It wasn't actually something he had thought of himself - Cimmerian, his first partner, had. "We just have to get him there."

He reached to his side where the trash cans lay scatted, grabbing one by the handle. As the yeti dashed towards them like a mad man, he rushed forward and swung the metal cylinder as his jaw. The creature stumbled back and Gehenna recoiled, bracing himself with a half-dented garbage can.

"Well?" He shot back over his shoulder.

Megiddo nodded. She thought she knew the place, had passed it a few times on her patrols but never gone in - it looked like a waste of time, as long as she was focusing her attention on keeping youma away from populated areas. "Sounds good," she called, taking a running leap in the space Gehenna had cleared and jumping over the youma's head.

"Hey, ugly, over here!" she called, once she was clear on the other side. The creature turned slowly, and Megiddo took the opportunity to put space between herself and the lumbering youma. "Don't you want to knaw on my tasty, girly bones?"

As she darted down the alley (for a certain value of 'dart,' given the snow), she called back to Gehenna, "I think I've got this! Meet me at the warehouse!" Although if he wanted to follow her, she wasn't going to object. It was just - Megiddo wanted to at least think she could do this part herself.

It took a few more throws of her pitcher to keep the youma dopey enough, but Megiddo made it to the warehouse a few minutes later, yeti in hot pursuit. "Angry squire guy?" she called. "You here?" She'd known where the warehouse was, but once inside, didn't know the layout. She took the moment she had before the youma barged in after her to leap up to a second-floor catwalk, but this guy looked mean and he looked like his arms were made for climbing, so this wasn't going to last long.

"Let's shaft this a*****e," Megiddo called, hoping the squire could hear her. (She was proud of that pun, god damn it.)

"Good one," he called out of the dark above her, trailing off into a soft chuckle.

He'd let her lead the youma to the warehouse in favor of darting down a different path and arrived at the back entrance instead. He'd slid quickly under the half-raised garage door and double-checked the boobie-trapped elevator shaft. At this point he was confident the crumbled, decaying elevator at the bottom left enough dagger-size points to kill a t-rex.

"It's pretty much straight back," he dropped down beside her after lowering himself through a hole in a metal floor above. He could hear it's footsteps now, the grunting snarls as it ran. "Let it chase you as far as you can, I'll follow behind and knock him in." He didn't stop and wait for questions or give her time to object, he just finished what he had to say and took off at a jog towards the elevator shaft across the maze of catwalks spanning the second story.

He slowed his pace as he neared the end closest to the shaft, choosing his vantage point in the spare seconds he probably had before she led the beast down the wide corridor below. He stopped next to an opening for a ladder - or what was left of one with only a couple of rungs and jagged, rusted points. The rest of it was below, in barely-attached sections.

He crouched here and listened, waiting for his cue to save the day.

"Right!" Megiddo called to the unseen squire. Straight to the back. Right. I can do this! she urged herself, charging headlong down the aisle ahead of her. The elevator shaft yawned out of the gloom, growing steadily closer - clearly something she did not want to get personally acquainted with, as she rather much liked being alive and getting to go out and fight evil by moonlight in her pretty, pretty, lacy skull tights.

At what she deemed the last possible second (probably more dramatic than she needed be, but hey, this was life or death), Megiddo leapt out of the youma's path, landing clumsily atop some crates. As the pile below her began to shift, she jumped quickly to another, which seemed more likely to hold her weight. "Any time now!" she called to the squire, scanning the high corners of the warehouse. Where had his voice come from just now? The youma would only remain confused and in the shaft's path for so long...

Sorry this is so short! :C

Gehenna did his best to zone out any noises around him except the haphazard gallop of the yeti-like creature - foot, knuckle, foot, knuckle. He only distantly registered the sound of her collapse into the crates, waiting as the vibration of the beast's weight made the metal beneath his fingertips buzz stronger and stronger.

Just as she called out to him he leaped, falling through the hole and grasping the metal rungs of the ladder with his fingers. He swung behind the youma just as it was turning to look for her, ramming two hard-booted feet into its face. One struck it in the center, obstructing its vision and throwing it off balance. The other hit him in the back of the skull, whirling it as it stumbled.

For a second it was almost comedic - it whirled, reached with over-sized hands for anything to grasp. One rock wobble back and then another before its inferior legs gave in and collapsed him backwards, tipping slowly into the gaping mouth of the elevator.

..then he was gone, swallowed by the darkness.

A roar echoed up behind him as he fell, until it ended in a yelp and the squishy, wet sound of something being impaled by jagged, rough edges. At that exact moment the rusted ladder Ghen was clinging to collapsed and he fell unceremoniously to the floor, landing in a panting heap of armor. As he groaned and rolled onto his side, his eyes looked around him for a glance of the other knight.

Yet words escaped him as he drew deeps breaths and did his best to recover from the strike to his still-tender ribs. One day he'd learn to save the day without wrecking himself every time.

Megiddo did her best to watch the youma's descent, or at least pay attention to the noise it made on impact, which sounded pretty gross. She wondered - did it crumble to dust immediately, or was it still down there, near-death and oozing tar? Part of her (the morbid, awful part that liked to read pathology quarterlies) wanted to go and peer down into the elevator shaft and see- but the rest of her (the responsible, mature part that was trying to live up to the example set by Sailor Gunn) said, sensibly, that she should go check on the squire.

So right. She was going to do that.

Megiddo hopped carefully over the piles of rubble, approaching the squire carefully. He definitely looked worse for the wear, and she felt sort of bad for letting him take the brunt of the fight. Gunn would definitely not be impressed with her for that bit of pansy-assed behavior. "Here, hey, um," she fumbled crouching beside him and offering him her arms. "Can I help you up? Are you gonna be okay?"

Because seriously, if he wasn't, she'd like to know now so they could, like, power down and call an ambulance, instead of waiting for him to bleed out. Megiddo was seriously not in the mood to have someone die on her watch. Especially someone who seemed like a badass. Not like that wussy Mercury knight she'd met a few weeks ago. Ugh.

"That was ******** awesome," she said, fretting over the squire. Was he going to get up? Was he going to roll over and die? She just didn't know! "By the way. But you probably knew that. You seem like kind of a ******** awesome person. So, like, thanks a ton for the help. I'd be smeared all over a wall without it. Probably."

She liked to think she could have taken the youma, but she was also going to try to be realistic about this, and realistically, she'd had a snowball's chance in hell alone.

It was some time before Gehenna could find the air to speak, though he was aware of the Page's fretting and her rambling compliments. In silence he reached out and took her arm, letting her be the anchor he used to at least pull himself into a sitting-up position.

"Probably," he said slowly, though he had managed a small smile despite the way his ribs felt like someone was using them for a xylophone. "One part awesome and one part reckless," he poked a hand gingerly at the ribs on his right side, trying not to grimace openly when they protested. Right. No more swinging from ladders for a while. "These would have healed weeks ago if I didn't have to keep so many people from smear-status."

He laughed then to show that it wasn't as much of a burden as he implied and slowly pushed himself back up onto his feet. Despite the lingering grimace any time he moved too quickly, he seemed to be alright. There were only a few scratches - the majority of his pain seemed to be from old injuries. Gehenna's recklessness didn't always end so well.

"I'm Gehenna, Squire of Mars," he held out a broad, dark hand as he spoke, "I know it's not as convenient as those fancy shmancy cell phones the frilly skirts carry around, but if you need me just send a letter." She was spunky enough that it would take her far, but he doubted her ability to do anything as she was now - he doubted most Pages.

He didn't seem terribly worse for the wear, and that was as much of a relief as Megiddo supposed she was going to get this evening. "Well, thank you," she said uncertainly - was he being snide with her? Or just remarking on the truth? "I really, really appreciate not being a smear on the pavement. Like, seriously, that would totally ruin my night. Week. Life. Everything."

Well, at least he was laughing. She felt a little better about that - and he wasn't in like, immediate danger of falling over and dying, right? "Megiddo Page of Saturn," she replied, shaking his hand. The page title was chafing on her a little - how many assholes did she have to beat up before her experience bar capped out?

"Send you... a letter?" she asked, confused. She had her signet ring, if he'd noticed it there on her right hand - but she hadn't figured out how it worked yet, which was probably clear from her question. "Was there, like, a manual or something I was supposed to get about all this? Because that doesn't mean anything to me."

"Is there no one teaching you greenies anything?"

He sighed and turned back the way they had come, toward the entrance of the abandoned factory where soft light gleamed lazily through the open door. He shouldn't have been as harsh on her as he was acting, really. When he'd found his ring it had been by pure chance, he only knew what it could do because he'd seen himself do it.

"You should go to your planet more and learn things from yourself." With one hand plastered against his ribs, he swung his feet into a lazy gait and started toward the exit - she could keep up or be left behind. There were very few things in his life that he'd taken the time to learn about and he felt like he was still only beginning to understand what it meant to be a Knight. Yet here she was, reminding him of everything he had already learned.

Resigned to helping her, he held up his free left hand as he walked and showed her the gleaming golden ring on his middle finger. "Write something and put the seal to the paper, any type you want. It can be sent to any ally. They've got those little cell phones, we're just classier." And a little out dated, but he worked with what he had. They reached the doorway after a short, dusty walk down the old corridor and he paused to look at her as they stood beneath the threshold.

"You can send them without even having to be Megiddo, it's pretty useful. You probably shouldn't do it if you're under attack though, just saying." He added a small grin to the end of his words, managing despite the obvious discomfort he was in. He wasn't going to be patrolling much longer.

Megiddo fell into step behind Gehenna, doing her best to match his strides and finding that being tall was certainly to her advantage here. "Yeah, no," she said, vanishing her weapon - at least she knew how to do that much. The silver ring on her finger glinted, and she held up her hand to look at it as she walked. "No one tells me anything."

Part of the problem, she thought, was probably that most of her friends were senshi. She was glad to finally be meeting some knights who knew what was up and weren't totally useless (like Babylon, ugh). "I'll give it a try," she said, looking over at his ring. Gosh, so cool. And she wanted armor like his!

As they headed back out onto the street, Megiddo called, "I guess we should call it a night, huh?" She could tell he was trying not to let his injury slow him down, but he wasn't doing a very good job of hiding how much pain he was in. Rather than call him out on it, it seemed smarter to just end the conversation.

"So, uh, I'm gonna head home, and you go put some ice on that? Yeah?" She flashed him an awkward thumbs up.

He had to admit that she was a spunky thing, she certainly didn't let her lack of knowledge slow her down. It was like a younger, less neurotic version of Penny. The thought made him smile. He brought up one hand as he did, waving her away as he turned to head in the direction of his apartment.

"Yeah, get out of here. I'll take care of it." He was probably going to end up in an ice bath before the night was through, but he'd be damned if he told anyone he was as weak as he felt. As soon as he could find suitable cover he intended to power down and draw less attention to himself. Just in case. He paused before he was even ten steps away and turned to look back at her.

"Hey," he called back, "when you figure out how to use that thing, let me know." There, he was promising to be involved in something. Nemesis and Vulcan could stop giving him those worried glances now. He turned again and gave her one last back-handed wave, then dwindled into the distance down the long walkway.
