He didn't know how long it had been since he'd last seen his family. It felt like forever, even if it had really only been a few weeks. But Sam had grown quite accustomed to being around someone that he knew at least fairly well. To be left behind, especially after something as romantic as a star shower, kind of hurt... He knew Oblivion had had to take his young female charge back to Serenia, and Carrion was off doing Abronaxus knew what... He could be off gallivanting across all the continents, having shameless fun. Or. He could be... hurt... dying... dead... How was Sam to know?
Sensing his distress, Azure, his blue vlidean companion, plodded over to him. She nuzzled her head up into his hand. Sam had taken to staying almost exclusively in his Khehorian form when he was near his pets. They were only slowly adjusting to his Khehora form, but positively craved his attention so long as he walked on two legs. And Azure was no exception. When Sam didn't immediately acknowledge her touch, she nipped at his fingers gently. Not enough to draw blood from his thick skin, of course, but enough to warn him that she meant business.
So Sam sighed and glanced down at her, giving the young vlidean a mildly reassuring head-pat, just so she'd know he wasn't planning on doing anything too terribly ridiculous. As he glanced toward the opening of his cave, he couldn't help but think that maybe he just needed to get out for a while. Many of his clan mates were sleeping, hunting, or caring for their young ones, so it seemed unlikely that anyone would need him anytime soon... "Do you want to go out for a while, Azure? Maybe stretch our wings for a bit?" The Vlidean cooed at him like she thought he was some kind of child, but it sounded like the closest thing to agreement he'd get.
So, he shrugged. If they were going out, he may as well take Phalfa too. The golden alkara did need to fly a bit to stay in good spirits. His two pets weren't the greatest of friends, so Sam wasn't too terribly surprised when Azure made an annoyed huff as he walked over to free Phalfa from her enclosure. The young Alkara had her head tucked under her wing in sleep, but she peeked up quickly at the sound of Sam's footfalls. Her pen was sectioned off by small earthen bars and located near the mouth of the cage so she could still bask in the sunlight undisturbed. She had a few small patched of shrubs to nest in, as well as a rocky rise to perch on. The Gaili didn't like to boast, but he felt he was keeping her pretty happy, despite being a mostly caged pet.
As he raised the bars with his Gaili magic, Phalfa fluttered her wings and glided from her perch to land on his outstretched arm. "Hello, my lovely." Sam purred, running a hand down her silken gold feathers. Seeing this, Azure hissed in frustration and nudged her head against the back of the Khehorian's leg. Sam only tutted and shook his head as he walked toward the mouth of his cave. He raised his arm and tossed Phalfa out into the wind, where she let out a lovely trill and glided about, obviously showing off in front of the grumpy vlidean.
With a snort, Azure cannoned herself off the edge and into the air. She wasn't as quick or graceful as the alkara, but she was no less beautiful. The sun glistened off her cool-themed feathers, sending fractals of light dancing against the rocks. She chirped out a high note, hoping to gain a bit of attention herself, while still sticking to Sam's rule that forbade her from being too loud. Despite this, she was even more eager to put on a show than Phalfa. It must be a vlidean thing. She wanted nothing more than to possess everyone's attention.
But as soon as curious heads starting poking forth from the caves, interested in the pretty chirps and calls the creatures were making, Azure became weary. She didn't mind if they watched her, thrived on it, probably. But the youngsters were always eager to leave their mother's side. And with Sam, the clan's leader watching over his beasts, the Orakoir would be able to flutter out and join them! Because as long as Sam was there, it was safe... Of course, Azure only grudgingly shared the sky with Phalfa. To have several tiny Orakoir fluttering about her wasn't that thrilling of an idea...
As they started emerging one by one out into the sky, the vlidean became nervous. A few of them left her alone. Sam suspected they might be future tamers in the making, if they could realize when Azure didn't want them anywhere near her. Not that she was making it hard to see, of course, but it seemed like most of the youngsters didn't care for her desires. It seemed there were at least two fluttering about her at all times, marveling at her feathers, and reaching out with an extending forearm or maw to pet her silken frame.
Azure hissed and ruffed at them, and Sam could see that she was trying her hardest to stay under control and be a good little pet while still getting her point across. The Orakoir didn't take the hint, and Sam could see what was happening an instant before it did... Curious teeth snapped right next to the small vlidean's rump, capturing one of her long tail feathers and giving it an accidental yank. Azure shrieked and whirled on her attacker, and Sam dove to the rescue from his perch.
He intercepted Azure's snapping beak before she had a chance to rip into the youngster (even if he did understand her plight. He didn't want anyone pulling his tail, either). He slipped an arm between them and separated them, laying his fingers across the vlidean's eyes and beak to calm her. She let out a few disgruntled chirps before settling, while the Gaili Khehorian admonished the children before him. "Can you not see how clearly frustrated she is by your antics?" He demanded sternly, giving each Orakoir a hard stare in turn. "She's doing her best to stay away from you all, but you keep coming after her to torment her anyway." He scooped his girl from the air, tucking her close against his chest. "Run along and play with Phalfa." He commanded, nodding toward the golden alkara gliding breezily nearby.
The youngsters skittered off quickly to do as they were bid, casting annoyed glances over their shoulders at Sam. Sometimes he was fun, but other times he was just mean! It was so difficult to figure him out. The Gaili shook his head and turned to flutter back toward his cave, hefting Azure a bit higher on his chest. He rubbed her cheeks and patted her head to soothe her, until she was laying limply in his arms. She had snapped, but Sam still strongly believed that she deserved a treat for her efforts. She had tried to be good, after all.
He landed neatly on the threshold and cooed pleasantries to his young vlidean while he carried her toward the back. As his cave sloped away from the mouth, it grew blacker and cooler. Cool enough that Sam could hide leafy or meaty treats packed between the chill rocks and they wouldn't smell for at least two days. He pulled out a bouken carcass from his storage and leaned against the cave wall. He lifted Azure up to rest along his shoulders as he plucked scraps of meat from the bouken and fed it to her. Honestly, she probably enjoyed the extra attention more than the snack. She nudged her cheek lovingly against his in between bites, and Sam cooed soft pleasantries at her all the while.
But once, as he reached to feed her another bite, the entirety of his cave was jarred. Not expecting the assault, Sam lost his footing and stumbled, flipping the morsel of meat up and on top of her beak. As she crowed in alarm, the bite slipped off and landed with a splat against the ground. As he righted himself, he turned to see Azure shook him an annoyed look. The Gaili only had a moment to ponder what had just happened before an alarmed shriek of "Sam!" stabbed through the air.
He didn't pay Azure another thought. She seemed to realize the urgency in him and leaped from his shoulder to fly ahead and scout out the problem. Sam rushed after her, emerging onto the lip of his cave and staring out. He wasn't sure who had called his name, but looking to the mountains and valleys around him, that didn't seem to matter. Another shake rumbled through his cave, and he noticed that everything else seemed to quiver as well. Whatever it was was moving inside, around, through the rocks of his home. The mothers had called their young back to their sides, although no one seemed certain the caves were safe.
Despite the rumblings and shaking, Sam still hadn't even seen the creature that could do this. But if it was underground, he didn't need to see it to stop it! He kicked off from his cliff, gliding down to the valley below. Up above, Azure and even Phalfa (who probably preferred to be napping rather than investigating) circled overhead. Sam couldn't help but notice how they didn't risk landing... Creatures like these two probably had an innate sense about these things. If they weren't going to risk touching the ground, maybe something dangerous was down there...?
He'd have to lure it out. Slowly, hesitantly, his bare feet brushed the ground. He'd hardly had the chance to set his whole weight down before he felt the rumbling. He reached out with his magic, letting it flow around him and down into the earth. He couldn't see it, for obvious reasons, but it was big and cylindrical... And, if his senses were correct, then there was... multiple of them...? he didn't have the chance to fully discern how many they numbered before the ground was disappearing beneath his feet. His wings fanned and he hovered for only a moment before one of the beasts surged from the ground. Sam was able to sling a slate of earth as it popped up, chopping what he hoped was its head right off its body. It tumbled over into a splattering mess before falling back into the tunnel.
With the earth shifting about in unexpected ways, another came arcing from the ground. Sam would've considered it a leap even, as it dove toward him. the Khehorian fluttered to the side, then raised up a boulder to crash down right in the middle of it. Guts and ooze spurted from both sides, and while it continued to writhe, he doubted it would really move again. So there'd been at least two... But he was certain there had to be more. The two he'd slain were certainly enormous, but to make the whole valley shake? That seemed unlikely.
He fluttered a short distance away. If these beasts could sense movement on the surface and actually had a desire to attack it, then his people could be in danger... They could fly, yes, but their homes and the little ones? Care needed to be taken. The Gaili glided over and perched on a ledge. A quick scan of the caves revealed that everyone had ducked out of sight. Hopefully, that would be enough... With nothing alerting his eyes to danger, he went back to his magic. If he focused, he could sense the earth shifting and swaying, grinding. Tunnels? If he ventured inside one of them, maybe he'd catch more of the beasts. There were still some rummaging around down there...
He jumped up, then crashed heavily into the ground, shoving the rocks and boulders away with his magic and letting the ground swallow him up. Sam's tiny hole was nothing like the urshund created. No doubt they'd easily realize he wasn't one of their own and swarm to him. Hopefully. He burrowed himself down several yards, and at an angle because it made things a bit more simple. But the darkness shrouded him quickly. He'd be relying solely on his magic to spot his adversaries... A magic they could dig through pretty easily, it seemed... But he needed to rid the clan of this threat quickly, before someone got hurt. And so, he pressed on.
Once the darkness completely enveloped him, it was impossible to tell where he was going. The only inklings that he had that the urshund were after him were the rumblings. Once, he paused in his tunnel creation to sense his surroundings. He knew it (or they) was (were?) coming, but he honestly couldn't tell from where. he had to pause burrowing to cast his magic out in a wave, sensing not one, but three of the monsters headed toward him. Sam knew he couldn't allow them to wreck his tunnel. He may be capable of defending himself within the confines of his own element, but he still needed to breathe. He couldn't let his air supply be cut off because they decided to gouge through his tunnel!
Crouching low against the bottom of his vent, he sent out a sharp wave of rustling earth of his own, before any of the three beasts could reach him. While his tunnel stayed perfectly intact, the three burrowers were instantly crushed by the earthen walls that came pressing in on them. He felt resistance as their exoskeletons absorbed much of the shock, but they relented after only a moment. His magical earthen abilities were no match, even for man-eating, burrowing insects. The Gaili paused to feel for any further movement, but when there was none, he knew he had succeeded.
The next came at him directly from the front. Sam had to suppress a chuckle because what stupid beasts these must be, to think they could just dive in and take him out. The Gaili backtracked a few paces, in preparation to allow the beast to open up his tunnel for him. And when it did, he raised the ground beneath it like a spire, kabob-ing straight through the middle, and then another through the head. It wasn't long for this world. He had to tunnel a small detour around it, but then he was out in the large expanse of tunnel the beast had created on his way to him. The slightly more open area would probably do him well in combat...
Even if it didn't assist him in determining how close and where the remaining urshund were. It certainly didn't do him any good determining how many remained. Hopefully not many. They were starting to wear on him. But the next two came along quickly, tunneling side-by-side and at an angle coming from above. Sam waited until their heads just started to emerge from the rocks before he called upon his magic to rip them down into his tunnel. there was an obvious moment of confusion from them before they started trying to tunnel lower again. But the Gaili stopped them by raining a small mountain of gravel and debris upon them, then hardened the earth beneath them and slammed them up into the top of the tunnel. By the end of it, the two urshund were little more than mincemeat...
But besides that... the walls of his own tunnel were becoming unstable. Sam had just shifted a load of earth a lot of which ways, and he could feel how shaky his boundaries were. It was time to return to the surface. He'd annihilated many of the threats from below. There couldn't be too much more to face from above. The trek back was much quicker than it was coming down. Probably since he didn't have to use anywhere near as much magic. For some reason, that had him on slightly less alert. So when another urshund came crawling along down the tunnel Sam was traveling, he actually jumped a bit in surprise.
But the thing... Didn't seem to be on the offensive. Had it even noticed him? It wasn't actually tunneling, just traveling along a hole that was already made, so... Maybe it didn't know he was there? Either way, he had to dispatch of it before it realized. He launched ahead, collecting a shell of dirt and debris to encase his arm as he sped toward the urshund. The tunneling beast... was not quick. Sam didn't think it recognized his ill intent until his rock-coated fist was smashing into it and splintering its exoskeleton into nothing. When he pulled his arm free, it was coated in ooze and grime, and the body of the urshund was still...
So many of the beasts! But hopefully, not too much more to go. He emerged from the ground through his tunnel opening and looked about. No one was panicking... faces had appeared in the caves again, and all seemed still... When Sam cast his gaze to the skies, though, Azure and Phalfa were still refusing to touch the ground. Sam frowned. He leaned down, pressing his ear to the dirt. His animals must know that it wasn't over... Something had to be left... His head snapped up. It was in the mountains! Going for an easier target, no doubt. But Sam wouldn't let it get away!
With a roar, he kicked from the ground and cannoned toward the base of the mountain. He burst through rocks and earth, and just barely managed to snag the creature's back end and yank it free of its tunnel. Once it was back out in the open, dispatching it was easy. He simply had to fly up... And come smashing down into it, coating himself and the ground in filth and urshund remains. But it was worth it. It seemed unlikely that any more remained, and if they did, then they'd already scattered. He'd done a good deed today. Well... That was a chief's work, wasn't it?
