For Cole, it was nothing more than another one of those long lazy days by his stream. He didn't even really think much of the pretty necklace he'd found washed up in a clump of long dead reeds on the shore. It did cross his mind, for just a moment, that he might give it to his son, Duer, for his mate, or one of his future children. But then he tucked it under his wing and promptly forgot about it. It was, after all, just a pretty stone. It held no inherent value to the old stallion.
The river, today, was about as interesting as it could possibly get in the winter. The weather had warmed just enough to allow a few chunks of ice to break loose, and for the melting snow to increase the river's flow just enough for the chunks to float by at a nice, leisurely pace. The cold would drive him home soon enough, but for now, he was content.

Nadezhda had been sitting at the side of a stream, watching the small fish passing by. She had run into a bit of weather and dirt problem and had spent a fair amount of time cleaning herself. Her body, neck and foot warmers were clean, but the jade pendant she was given by her mother was being quite the hassle. The decorations on them had a lot of dirt stuck, and well, it was not easy to clean.
She had kept it out of the water for the most part, and had instead used her mouth to pick up the water and splash it. It still wasn't getting very clean though, and decided to take more of a risk and held the chain of then necklace while the water ran past.
Some water accidentally splashed into her nose, causing her to be uncomfortable and let go of the necklace. Before she could look up, the necklace was headed downstream.
"Oh dear!" Nade quickly dashed off until she spotted an old stallion sitting nearby the water. "Excuse me Sir, but did you happen to see a jade pendant headed downstream?" She had lost track of it, and really hoped that the stallion could point her in the right direction.

Cole raised his head when he heard the stranger approaching. In no way did he anticipate that she would be looking for the trinket he had fished up out of the water only moments ago. But, it seemed that she was.
"A pendant?" he chuckled as he pulled himself up to his feet. His body was beginning to show the long years he'd endured. The very bones in his body creaked as he moved. Well, the pendant wasn't really his to begin with so he may as well give it back, but first, a bit of fun.
"Is this what you're looking for?" he asked, unfolding a wing to show the shimmering jewel hanging from where he'd tucked it into his feathers. "I like it. It's very pretty."

Nade's eyes lit up as the stallion showed her the pendant. "Yes that's the one!" She was very grateful that someone had found it and it hadn't gone further downstream. "I'm so glad someone found it!"
She trotted up to him. "It's a wonderful little trinket. My mother gave it to me before I traveled to these lands."
It made her happy that someone else was appreciating it, but made her a little bit worried too. The stallion had done enough to tuck it into his feathers instead of possibly finding the owner... Would he give it back to her?
"Would... Would you mind if I asked for it back, please?" Nade gave him a gentle smile, in hopes that he didn't want to keep it.

"Well I could," he said as he shifted his weight to get up. "But you see, I had it in mind that I would save it for one of my grandchildren."
It was clear by his movements that he was an older stallion long ago worn down by the world. There would be no challenge for a younger horse just to take the pendant if they wanted too and be on their way. He clearly knew this, even though he was acting like he didn't.
"So maybe you would consent to a trade, instead? There are some flowers that come up every spring which put out the most delicious roots. Unfortunately, it grows on a ledge that I can't reach." He adjusted his wings a bit then looked back at her.
