After Kadryn had departed, Sam was alone again. He'd left his animal companions behind, and so only had his thoughts to fly with. Although, after trying to tame the enormous insect with Kadryn, the Gaili found that he was... unexplicably bitten by the taming bug. He'd already had success with Azure, so maybe he really was getting better at this? Maybe he should try again on something else. If he succeeded, Levi would come home to a whole cave full of new beasts... The thought sent a tint thrill of excitement down Sam's spine, and he found that he was eager to get started.

He knew many of Eowyn's creatures, so rather than flying off to tame something on another continent, he decided it was best to stick at home this time. But what should he choose...? A breath of wind came from above, gently pressing Sam's wings and coaxing him lower. When he looked up, he spotted something big, feathery, and golden glaring down at him. The Gaili couldn't help but be slightly intrigued. With a shrug, he changed course to get a better look at the large bird.

But as he drew nearer, he noticed that it was guarding a patch of twigs and refusse. By that time, it had launched from its perch and was slinging harsh gusts of wind at him, pushing Sam backwards and occasionally pelting him with debris caught in the onslaught. The Gaili grinned, and released a jet of earth that smashed into it, hard enough to knock it off balance and quell its assaults for the moment. While it righted itself, Sam glided forward and peeked into the nest. An egg! He'd had to raise a dactyl from an egg before... But he wasn't even entirely sure what this creature was...

The adult beast shook itself out and charged at him. With a shrug, Sam scooped the egg up in his maw and pelted away, back to his cave.

This egg seemed to take much longer to hatch than any of the dactyl eggs Sam had obtained. Maybe it was just laid... Or maybe these big birds just took a bit longer to hatch. The Gaili didn't know, but that didn't stop him from doing whatever he could to care for the little thing. He brought it back to his cave and tucked it close. When the sun was out, he sat the egg beneath it to keep it warm. It was never left unattended. If he went out to hunt, the youngster Crowell was left in charge. But other than all that... What was there really to do with an egg, besides wait for it to hatch?

Despite the harsh and overly long amount of time, Sam waited, the egg finally started to crumble. It happened to be while the Khehorian was having one of his staring matches with it. At first, he thought he may have fallen asleep and was hallucinating... But when the beautiful, glorious sounds of cracking shell reached his ears, Sam let out a squeak of glee. And soon enough, a tiny golden head was poking forth, uncovering itself from the shell and emerging out into the world. It peeped, and the Gaili gushed over it. He probably shouldn't pick the tiny newborn up, but he did anyway.

He cooed and swooned and petted it, despite what he heard about baby birds being pretty susceptible to disease. But after a few days passed, this little one still seemed perfectly fine. It was eating well (or at least, Sam thought the green fruity things he fed it were healthy). It tagged after Sam everywhere, sometimes fluttering just behind him, and other times hoping along, chirping to try and get Sam's attention. The Gaili thought it was adorable, but Azure was not amused. He kept them separated with an earthen cage most of the time... At least until the two started to rival each other in size...

When that happened, a whole new flurry of activity began. They were both still rather small (certainly not full grown), but despite this, it became a chore to keep them apart. If they weren't, then they were definitely too hostile to leave alone. It quickly became apparent that he'd need to teach these two to behave around each other. After all, Sam rather liked his vlidean pet, Azure, but he was rapidly becoming fond of Phalfa (the young golden Alkara) as well. It wouldn't do to let them kill each other! Phalfa was the new pet... Maybe they both just needed to adjust.

He decided it was probably best to pin Phalfa away and let Azure roam as she usually did. He was careful to leave food and water in Phalfa's enclosure, and made a great show to Azure of him spending time with the pinned Alkara. When he wasn't playing with Phalfa, he devoted his attention to the vlidean. No need for her to be jealous, after all... He waited until Azure's curiosity of the closed-off area died a bit before he tried to introduce them to each other yet again. And when he did, he decided it was best to just let it happen on it's own, by opening the area up... just a bit.

It was Phalfa that noticed first. After being trapped for so long, she finally poked her head free from Sam's earthen walls and looked out. Azure was napping in the sun near the front of the cage, so she didn't even notice until Phalfa's rustling wings roused her. As soon as the vlidean's blue-feathered head picked up from the ground, Sam was showering both of them with an array of fruity treats. Anything to keep them distracted. And, as long as he was supervising, that seemed to work. Sam still separated them anytime he needed to leave them alone, and Phalfa slept in her earthen enclosure at night, but for the most part... they seemed to just ignore each other. That was more than Sam could hope for, in all honesty.
