Walking down the morning's path had long since become habit. Through the long and cold winter months, when the air chilled a pony to the bone even when they were under the comfort of a shelter, Luyu enjoyed nothing more than taking a daily trip down to the waters that ran out of a hot spring further up the mountain. She ha discovered them soon after she had arrived at these new lands, and they had been a crucial piece of her choice to settle there on a more permanent basis. By the time they flowed this far from their source they were cool enough to drink without burning her tongue, but still hot enough to chase the chill from inside her if only for a few short minutes. It was a welcome reprise, though one she rarely saw others partake.
Nothing seemed out of the ordinary as she approached the stream that day. The winter birds were still chirping in the trees. They'd long since grown used to her daily visits. A good indication that nothing nearby was out to harm either her or her feathery friends. She raised her head to whistle back, then bent her head back into her pouch to pull out one of the few remaining apples she had stored away that fall. A few birds descended from the trees. One was a cardinal. Normally a territorial species this one seemed more interested in acting as a guardian for some of the smaller birds than in chasing them away to hog her occasional gifts all to himself.
"And how are you this morning, my lovely ones?" she smiled, watching the birds as they pecked away at their prize. They did not answer and she really never expected them too. Such treats were difficult to find this time of year for those without the foresight or ability to collect and store a few during the harvest season when the finding was good.
Once at the stream, she bent her head down and inhaled deeply, letting the warm steam enter her. There was a slight sulfuric smell to it, which she had once found disgusting but now soothed her greatly. The smell of home. Even the light steam coming off the waters made her feel just a bit better in the winter's morning light. It was less harsh than the snow surrounding it, and didn't hurt her eyes with it's glare.
Maybe today would be a good day to make her way up the path and bathe in one of the warmer streams. This one would work, but getting out when done always presented a problem. The temporary extra warmth wasn't worth it when drying off meant freezing as the water left her drenched coat. Up hill though, there was a warm cave. If she bathed in the pool closest to that cave she would be able to make the sort walk to the cave and wait there until her coat had dried thoroughly.
