It had been a month of travel, and in that time Westrion had begun to have stirrings of romantic feelings for his traveling companion. It was a feeling he quickly pushed back into the deep unreachable places of his heart. Lament was a wonderful mare, she was fascinating, but she had suffered so much and she was dressed as a bride, there had to be someone from her past that held her heart. A wave of jealously threatened to crash against his unbreakable dam on his emotions, he took in a deep breath. He did not care who the stallion was, he cared about lament and finding her memories. If returning her to the stallion of her past brought her happiness, Westrion would do so. Her happiness was all that he cared for, that she was never alone again. Were the Fates laughing at him? Or was this truly his destiny, even though he believed one could make their own destiny, there were some things that one could not change. His brown eyes looked over to Lament, their pace had been slow the past month because of the tree she bore upon her back. It’s dead branches swayed as she moved, almost like a dance to the blue sky above their heads.

The rhythm of their steps made the tree sway slowly on her back. Her body ached as they walked, it seemed they never quit walking. So far there had been no answers, only more questions. But they were not just the questions of her past, but of her future.
Beside her, Westrion bloomed like a bright flower--a promise of a happy life. If she left this behind, if she really could, then she could follow these feelings. The way her heart beat for him made her shake, it made her dizzy and breathless.
How had these feelings crept up on her? How had this even come to be? She could not fall for him, she would not allow it. She had lost someone before, and that hurt even now. How could she try again. What if she did it again, all over again?
What if she woke up somewhere else, unable to breath with all memories erased? No, no it would be kinder not to fall for him.

Clomp, clomp, shiwsh, swhish. Their movement across the land was beginning to make a rhythm that he felt his body start to sway too. He shook his head and looked at the landscape stretching before them. In the distance a shadow caught his eye, could it be the grave yard that they had been searching for this past month. Excitement filled his blood and he turned to the mare, “Lament I believe we are almost there. About a day’s journey or perhaps two, depending on our pace.” Worry began to take seed, was this the time when they would go their separate ways; once she discovered who she was would she forget about him? Westrion gave a mental shake, he could not have these negative thoughts at this moment, there were things to be done and he would not fail at the task before him. “Secrets will soon be revealed, memories will no longer be sealed…” his voice trailed off, he was not sure what caused him to start rhyming, but his words seemed fit the circumstance.

His words settled over her, and they were heavier than the tree she carried as a burden. This would be the end, his promise fulfilled and then he would leave her. She could not take that, not now--not when she had found something that brightened her days after the long night of her soul.
She could not bear it. She slowed her pacing, "I'm tired. Perhaps, we'll reach it tomorrow. I do not think I can make it much further today." She felt her voice choking in her throat, "What if they memories don't come back? I...I'm not sure if I want them anymore."
Lament stopped suddenly, "I don't know if I want to know anymore. I don't want to..." She looked at him lingeringly.

The stallion slowed his pace to match that of the tree burdened mare, “Do you wish to stop for the night? We have a few hours until the sun is completely gone, perhaps we should find some shelter and a place to rest until tomorrow.” His heart began to beat faster, he was to be able to spend more time with Lament. His fondness for her continued to grow, but he kept his feelings to himself.
He looked at her in surprise, “But you have spent years searching for the truth, why give up that chance when you are so close to achieving that hope?” As her words trailed off he looked at her expectantly, “You don’t want to what?” Could she want the same thing as he wanted? No, he gave himself a mental shake, he was just projecting how he felt toward the mare and was silently hoping that she would reciprocate his feelings.

"I," she studied him. She felt herself balking at telling him how she felt. She couldn't, not now. Maybe not ever. She just couldn't face him or it now. Maybe that was the problem with the truth, that she didn't want to hear it.
She couldn't tell him, at least not now. The only way to escape it was to move, to move onward though she didn't want to go to that graveyard. But she feared it less than telling him.
"Then we should go," she whispered. "Before I lose my courage." I can't tell you.

"Oh, okay." He was not sure what he was hoping for, but what just happened certainly was not it. Did she want to leave him that badly that the thought of spending one more night with him caused her to want to hurry up this journey so she could regain her memories and the lost love who caused her to be dressed the way she was. With a shake of the head he dispelled the negative thoughts, what was this mare who caused him to continue to pass into a world full of negativity? Usually he was happy and not the jealous type, but the thought of Lament with another sent his bold boiling. He did not catch the double meaning of her words since he was caught up in his own internal struggle, he nodded his head toward the mare who was slowly stealing his heart, "As you wish."

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
Why had she thought that? Or had she remembered it? She couldn't say. It made sense. Suddenly, she was just tired of everything. This never-ending search for answers, these damn flowers, and this damn veil!
Whatever had happened had been long ago, and she didn't care anymore. She shouldn't care anymore. But she did. Why did she care?
Why couldn't she just let it all go? Why did the past have to mean so much that it ruined her future? Beside her was a stallion that she had grown...fond of. She could in time maybe love him or maybe she did. All she knew was that when she looked at him, her aching heart raced.
The graveyard loomed closer, but the more she tried to bury her past the more it seemed to loom right before her eyes.

Silence followed his three words. Together they walked, the shadow of the graveyard looming before them. Would the answers she sought be found there? What was he going to do after she discovered who she was? He could continue to travel the land, healing those who are injured and perhaps figure out a way to heal his own broken heart. He cast a secretive gaze at the mare, a slight smile appeared on his countenance. Lament, a strange mare who had been in and out of his thoughts since he was a little foal. She had been a figure of great mystery in his life, the symbol of the unknown. Thanks to her he was able to become the stallion he was today, well that and the arduous teachings of his father.
Completely lost in his internal thoughts, he did not notice that they had walked across the threshold of the graveyard. Surprised with the change of scenery, he looked up. The graveyard was an eerie place that held a mix of kawani people burial mounds and that of soquili. In this one place, Humans and horses entered the underworld side by side. Words from the poem Thanatopsis came to mind, his voice was barely a whisper as he spoke them aloud into the calm silent air of the final resting place of the dead.
“ Yet not to thine eternal resting-place Shalt thou retire alone, nor couldst thou wish Couch more magnificent. Thou shalt lie down With patriarchs of the infant world,—with kings, The powerful of the earth,—the wise, the good, Fair forms, and hoary seers of ages past, All in one mighty sepulchre. The hills Rock-ribbed and ancient as the sun; the vales Stretching in pensive quietness between; The venerable woods—rivers that move In majesty, and the complaining brooks That make the meadows green; and, poured round all, Old Ocean's gray and melancholy waste,— Are but the solemn decorations all Of the great tomb of man!”
His voice trailed off as he let the aura of the graveyard sweep over him.

Lament shivered as he spoke, the whole world seemed a bit more drab and dreary. But Westrion was a bright spot in the darkness, like a heated fire that drew her to him. She could feel the heat of him and the sweat.
Why had he come with her all this way? Was it kindness? Was it....?
She turned to him, the tree swaying on her back. She cared, she cared for him. Taking a deep breath, she closed her eyes. This was a graveyard, where better to bury her past forever. Give up this questing for thing she didn't need. She would look to the future--to Westrion, and to the life they could have together..
"Westrion," she looked at him and she didn't know what to say. Instead, she pushed her face against his. "I have feelings for you," her voice was barely a whisper.

His words vanished into the evening air, soon the stars would be out and the time when the veils between the worlds were the thinnest would be upon them. The stallion with the black wings paused when the lamenting mare turned her attention toward him. In the stillness of the evening he could hear the intake of her breath and the loud exhale. Whatever she was about to say next would change the life of the stallion forever. She would either tell him that this is how far he needs to go, that she remembers who she was or that she has the same feelings as he does. With a fervent heart he hoped it was the latter.
Her words uttered in barely a whisper caused the stallion’s heart to soar, he wanted to fly into the sky and shout out his jubilation of the news. Lament had feelings for him! He returned her face press, “I have feelings for you as well Lament.” He wanted to go on, telling her that he had meant to tell her earlier, but he knew that it would only be the half-truth. He did not want to be the one who tore her heart in two; for he wanted her love to be for him only and toward a lost love in the past.

She pressed her face closer to his, "I'm tired of talking about. Of remembering, of thinking. Doing is better. Action is smoother," she nipped at his neck. The burden of the past felt like it was falling away.
The past was truly buried.

Words were a powerful thing and the words of the beautiful mare before him had tremendous power over the stallion. Love was a powerful emotion, one that could even calm the most turbulent of hearts and his heart belonged fully to that of Lament. He was not sure if the romance would last, if it was true love of the soul like that of his mother and father; all he knew is that he was willing to see where his feelings took him. Fate had a plan for each and every one of them and even though he hated being a puppet, it was his destiny. Westrion had found his love and together beneath the starry sky they unlocked the next door of their romantic tale.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Birds sang happily and the sun slowly peaked over the hills, casting the graveyard in a pale pink light. Westrion stirred as the light hit his eye lids. His mouth opened wide in a yawn, slowly he cracked each eyelid open, wincing slightly at the bright light hitting his sleepy chocolate colored eyes. His eyes drifted toward the mare beside him, a smile played upon his countenance. He nudged her awake, “Good morning Sunshine.”

She did not dream, and that was a mercy. When she opened her eyes, she was smiling over at him. She felt like a girl again, young and unburdened. Lament blushed, "It's so early. You could have let me sleep in," she picked at him.
The sky was a beautiful blue and the air was cool as it whistled through the trees."Are you happy?" She asked him meekly.
