The scythe flickered into existence, twisted and jagged he never really noticed the change but it was clearly there as the weapon rested in his hands. The rain had left him with little to do outside and finally it had cleared up enough to get on the training grounds again.

<< Ahhhh so nice to stretch out~ >>

Sylvia at least seemed to be in a good mood for the time being as Roland brought her low and wide clipping the dirt with her blade as he brought her up into the side of another dummy. Sadly she got stuck halfway into it.

<< You need to swing harder! Stop holding back! >>

Sylvia was no longer happy. Now she was pouting rather hard.

"She's changed." Jordan stood far enough back to be out of range, watching Ro train. He'd seen Sylvia enough times to know that the scythe's shape had altered. A deeper connection, a stronger bond. That was a good thing, they agreed.

Ferros wasn't yet summoned, though they'd also come out to train.

Roland almost jumped at the sound of Jordan behind him. He wasn't that close, well out of range of the weapons swing, and also sight as he was unaware of the other hunter watching him. "Yeah... she changed since I got the promotion. I um, haven't really thought about why."

For once his weapon was silent, not goading him towards Jordan or offering a thought about why this shift had happened.

"It seems to happen around promotion time." Jordan tucked his hands into his pockets, not moving any closer. "The changes come from deepening the weapon bond, finding out how you work together. I'd guess that it gets to that threshold where the changes are going to happen around the same time as you've gained the skills and knowledge necessary to promote. You can't really develop your skills if your weapon bond's weak." He shrugged. "That's my theory, anyway. Does she have a new charge yet?"

An awkwardness lay between them, unspoken, not quite a chill, but something that Jordan wasn't certain how to address, wasn't sure it should be addressed at all. Some things needed to be aired out and discussed, but there were matters that were best dealt with by steadfast denial as well.

"She changed after promotion, but not much. This was... this was more then that." He tugged at the weapon dislodging it from the dummy, she was larger, twisted all along the once smooth shaft. No where was the spot indicating she could break apart, hands moved over the rugged edges dipping into grooves to grab hold as he spun about in a back swing, the smaller blade catching and finishing what the first started.

"She's had the new charge. It's under control at last though." He still recalled it misfiring on Tuck, blowing Heidi across the training ground and all the cuts it left over his own form as Sylvia tried to lash out and heal him all at once.

Finally Roland turned to look at Jordan letting the scythe rest in the ground, he simple watched the other hunter in silence, debating the storm of feelings welling inside him.

"She changed because... I think I've accepted what a mess I am."

The stillness in Jordan's expression thawed a little, a flicker of sympathy surfacing in his eyes. "I think most of us are more of a mess than we let on," he said.

"Maybe." It was true, they where all a mess. He couldn't deny that in the least. "I can't keep a single thing together Jordan. I lost Nevada, I screwed it up and it was so bad that she doesn't even acknowledge having ever known me. Something happened and she gave up every piece of me that she knew."

His face grew weary, "I lost a family, I lost a friend, I lost you. A memory a fragment of something. Em was real. I've found stuff in my room from her, given to someone else. That place, that time. It wasn't completely fake and it's gone."

"Excalibur offered all of us the chance to forget something. I thought about it, too." Jordan ran a hand through his hair. "Decided, after I thought about it, that giving up what hurt would take away a part of me. But it was tempting, and some people did." He sighed. "I think, maybe, that taking that option, that says more about her than it says about you."

The corners of his eyes pinched a little with a flicker of something that might have been regret, might have been sorrow or exhaustion. "Things that might have happened, somewhere else," he said. "If life hadn't gone the way it has." He shook his head a little.

"That she regrets everything? Or that she hated the thought of me? What does it matter, it's just something else I thought I could hold onto that's gone now." He dragged Sylvia through the dirt hefting the weapon over his shoulder fingers running along her curved edges. "I hid during it all. I was afraid."

Roland continued to watch Jordan eyes weary as well, "Clarice was real too. I heard about her, about what happened. What if the one I knew was just like her? She's gone but she was a better friend then most I've had now. Otto was even good, he was quiet, I liked him." He looked at the ground again. "I liked me a lot more."

"Not hate, I wouldn't think," Jordan said mildly. "Hate, that's not something you forget or put away, not willingly. Hate's something you save." His thumb rubbed over the band of Ferros's ring, dragging across smooth warm metal.

"Clarice was a good person." He tilted his head a little, studying Ro. "We're more broken here, all of us." A moment's hesitation. "Every time I've seen another of me, he's been stronger. Better at keeping himself together. I'm not them, though. They're like -- funhouse mirrors. Reflections, but altered. Trying to be them will break you."

"You keep it, sometimes you give it up. You give it all up to get past it and leave nothing left but an empty spot." Hands twisted at the scythe again.

He seemed to shrink hearing about Clarice, the memory of silly little Narwhal plushies, asking her for advice and what to do. He held Sylvia closer as if the weapon would replace those lost feelings. "Even if you aren't all together, you've done better then most. I've admired that. I always have."

"You can't put somebody else in that empty spot," Jordan said, and then stopped, looking almost surprised, oddly unguarded for just a moment.

You should listen to yourself more often, Ferros said.

Jordan shook his head a little, put the thought away delicately to examine in more detail later. "I'm better at looking like I've got it together," he said to Ro. "It's a skill developed through years of practice."

Roland only just noticed Jordan shifting looking confused or maybe surprised. He wasn't sure what the look was. He only looked down offering not to probe farther into something that caught the other hunter off guard.

"But isn't that all it is? Looking like it's together, having some thread of it being okay?" He finally looked up again, "I'm a mess, I look like a mess. I don't know what to do with myself."

<< Maybe stop being so depressed and dramatic? >>
PostPosted: Tue Feb 18, 2014 8:54 am

"I don't have an answer for you," Jordan said quietly. "I've barely got one for myself. If you fake it too long, you can forget there's anything else that's not pretending." He looked away, off towards the coast. "Find out what's important in you. About yourself. Don't build on sand."

Roland shifted following Jordan's gaze to the shore. "I don't think I faked anything, I think I left myself open and out there and it bit me in the face."

Turning towards Jordan he brought Sylvia down into both his hands squaring off towards him. "I'm alive. And that's about all I have right now." He lifted the weapon and offered a sad smile, "You owe me a dance still. We never had one."
