"Y'know, that Thaddeus Pallin guy is apparently coming to town." Erika remarked as she read the morning paper.
Lenore perked up at the sound of the familiar name. Prof. Thaddeus Pallin was the author of 'The Power of Battle', the book that Erika had purchased her a few weeks earlier. It was absolutely fascinating, the idea that you could harness the energy emitted by pokemon attacks. It had even convinced her to pay more attention when her pokemon battled the last few times. "R- really." The girl replied, trying her best to sound disinterested.
Erika looked up from the paper with a knowing smirk. "Ya wanna go?"
"...Yes."

Walpurgis looked down at his communicator as he affixed the mask to his face. His mission was simple; he had to steal some professor's research data while he was travelling to the Zatao Region. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, he figured the mission would be a cinch. Pulling on his trench coat, he stepped out into the forest from the small cave.

The days passed as quickly as they always did, but for Lenore, it seemed much longer. Despite how much she didn't act it, she was still a child, and the excitement of a trip to some place she wanted to go was a distraction, to say the least. Two more days of reading the book at Erika's apartment, and another day in between at Samantha's - something had popped up that Erika needed to deal with, apparently - made for nothing but further excitement for the girl. She had so many questions for the professor, she wasn't sure where to begin.
Finally the day arrived that Professor Pallin would be in town. After Erika drove Lenore down to the building he'd be staying in, the two stepped through the door, Lenore hugging the huge book to her chest.

"Erika? What are you doing here?" Samantha walked forward from the wall she was standing at.
Erika hung her head. "Aw, s**t. If I'd known ya were on duty here, I wouldn't have offered to take Sleeves to see this professor dude."
Samantha glared at the other woman. "What did I say about swearing in front of her? It's like you have no idea how to behave around children."
Erika shrugged, uncaring. "Never said I did. 'Sides, she already said she knows all these words, who the hell cares?"
The woman sighed and shook her head. "That's not the point, Erika." Turning to Lenore, she smiled. "Hello, Lenore. It's good to see you again. Are you looking forward to meeting the professor?
Lenore nodded. "Yeah."
Erika suddenly piped up. "Hey, Ms. By-the-books -" "I told you not to call me -" "Yeah, don't care. Anyway, could ya take Sleeves down to meet the professor dude? I gotta use the little girl's room."
Samantha sighed. "Alright, Erika. Let's go, Lenore." The woman smiled kindly at the girl as she turned and led the way to the Professor's room, Lenore close behind.

Samantha knocked on the professor's door, and a gruff voice gave a simple "Come in." Lenore looked around the room as she and Samantha entered. Like Erika's room, it was fairly bare, but it made sense, as Professor Pallin was only visiting. Sitting in a revolving chair was a wiry middle aged man, smiling at the two. He stood as they approached, extending his hand to Samantha. "Greetings. I'm Professor Thaddeus Pallin, as you are no doubt aware. This," He said, gesturing to the young woman standing beside him holding a binder full of notes. "is my assistant, Orianna." The lady bowed her head at the mention of her name, smiling softly. Samantha took his hand and shook it, noting the frailty of the man's grip. "Hello, Professor. I'm Officer Samantha Pierce. I've been assigned to guard you during your stay."The professor laughed heartily. "Oh, I'm sure that will be entirely unnecessary." He turned to Lenore before turning back to Samantha. "And who is the child you brought with you? Is she an officer, too?" "Uh, no, she's not."The man smiled. "Of course she isn't. It was a mere jest." He turned back to Lenore. "What is your name, young lady?" "I'm Lenore." She looked down at the book in her hands. "Uhm. If it's not too much trouble, could you, uh, sign this?" The girl held the book out to the man, whose expression brightened immensely. Taking it, he turned to his assistant. "Ori, could you pass me a pen?" The lady nodded, retrieving a pen from her pocket before handing it to the professor. Pallin signed the book's first page before handing it back to Lenore. "Are you interested in my research, young lady?" Lenore nodded, and the man's smile grew. "Such a rarity to find young people interested in the sciences, let alone fringe theories such as my own. I hope it wasn't too dull?" Lenore shook her head. "I think it's fascinating, actually. I've read it twice.""Twice? My, but you are the up and coming researcher, aren't you?" Pallin laughed. The conversation was brought to an abrupt halt by the sound of an explosion a short distance away. Looking out the window, Sam saw smoke rising from the building next to the one they were in. "Lenore, stay with the professor and Orianna. I have to go make sure everyone is alright!" Without waiting for an answer, the officer turned and bolted out the door. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Walpurgis looked up at the sound of an explosion. That was the signal. He dropped down from the vents and ran towards the room.

Lenore thought idly to herself as she stood silently with the professor and his assistant. If this were a book, now that we're all alone, the explosion would have turned out to be a distraction for a killer to come murder us. As soon as she finished that thought, the door burst open to reveal a masked man in a trench coat holding two knives. Lenore stared blankly at the man as Orianna and Professor Pallin cowered backwards. That's pretty cliche.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Walpurgis froze as he saw Lenore. What was she doing here? It doesn't matter, my mission is clear. He shot forward at the professor. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lenore shook herself out of her bystander-mode as the masked man lurched towards Professor Pallin. Without thinking, she pulled Mephistopheles' pokeball from her pocket, releasing the dusclops. "Mef, use Ice Beam on the masked man!"Mephistopheles didn't bother questioning Lenore's judgement, and fired a wide ray of frost at the area in front of the man. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Walpurgis barely had time to notice the attack, jumping backwards. This is an issue, to say the least. Dropping his knives and pulling Gangrel and Satori's pokeballs off of his belt, he released the two pokemon. Knowing what to do, Satori vanished as Gangrel's eyes faded to a dull orange color. The liepard reappeared over the dusclops, slashing at his eye while the rattata shot a wheel of flame at him.

As Mephistopheles was blinded by flame and claw, the masked man rocketed forward once more, retrieved daggers in hand. " Mef, to your right!" The dusclops' hand shot out to the right, and a single tendril of shadow lurched toward him. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Walpurgis barely had time to register the girl's command, let alone the attack headed straight for him. Satori and Gangrel wouldn't be able to respond in time, either. As he resigned himself to his fate, he was pushed out of the way by Pallin's assistant. The shadow tendril pierced the young woman's leg, and she fell to the ground. "Run, Walpurgisnacht!" She cried out through gritted teeth. Walpurgis turned, expressionless through his mask, and ran to the young woman and picked her up into a fireman's carry. "You moron, I'll get us both caught!"Ignoring her, Walpurgis called out a command. "Blizzard!"Gangrel's eyes turned to a light blue color, and snow began to blanket the room, obscuring everyone's vision. Walpurgis ran out of the room, and Satori picked up the rattata before giving chase to Walpurgis and Orianna. As they ran, snow continued to form and whip into a flurry behind them, slowing any potential pursuers.

Professor Pallin slumped to the ground against the wall. "Perhaps I spoke too soon about not needing protection." He murmured.
Lenore looked worriedly at Mephistopheles. "Mef, are you alright?"
"I'm fine, Lenore."
All three looked up at the sound of approaching footsteps crunching on the thin layer of snow. Erika stepped through the door and shook her head. "I leave for five minutes - just five minutes - and all hell breaks loose."
"To think that my assistant was a traitor. All this time!" The professor shook his head as he got to his feet. Turning to Lenore. "It appears I have you to thank for my continued breathing, young lady."
Lenore gave the man a blank look. "Mef fought them, not me."
The professor laughed heartily. "So he did, at that." He stopped and murmured quietly to himself before nodding. "I seem to be in need of a new assistant. How would you like to take on that role, young lady?"
Lenore gaped as she fought to find words. "Um, I'm actually an assistant at the local gym, so - I'd love to, but...."
The man smiled. "It would only be for a few weeks. That's how long I'll be staying here - I wouldn't want to take you away from your home."
Lenore looked to Mephistopheles, who merely shrugged. "It's your choice, Lenore. I will do whatever you wish." The girl then looked to Erika, who grinned. "If ya wanna do it, then go for it, Sleeves. Having no one left to turn to, she looked at the book that laid on the floor. "Okay."
The man clapped his hands together excitedly. "Excellent! I will begin the necessary preparations as soon as possible."
