The Cave had been... disappointing. It was a notion shared by all three of the lads as they trudged away from it. But none more strongly than Maeron Aredan. I mean, dammit! He was so close. So close to letting that woman know that he didn't need her to make it through that blasted Cave of Dragons! He'd taken on Aedauns and Diabis before, so why had the last one finished him? It had been a lot of work to make it that far, and he'd been exhausted by that point, but still... He couldn't make it through the last one? How agonizingly frustrating. He'd even had Darke and Tohru by his side, so it wasn't like he was doing it alone.

The Alihora sensed his distress and gave him a nudge right between his shoulder blades. Mae could tell that Darke was disappointed too. But, despite that, he still sensed a silver-lining mentality coming from his companion. They may not have succeeded, but they were still stronger for it. They could make it nearly the whole way, with just a kid as an assist! Even that woman had had a kid, two Orakoir, and two Orakovan in the Cave with her! She'd had much more help than Mae! So as far as Darke was concerned...

Mae chuckled at his companion's thoughts, and turned to pat the Alihora's neck. "I guess we probably are... a little better." The Orderite admitted with a roll of his eyes. And the other boy? He never displayed any amount of aggression, but maybe he'd learned something too. He certainly had plenty of orbs to show for it. Spinning on his feet, Maeron turned to face his Kiandri... friend? Or whatever he was. "I know you aren't interested in battle, but it's an important part of staying alive! Going through the cave with someone strong is a good way to train! I'm sure you learned a lot." There was a rumbling disapproval from Darke as he sensed where the Orderite's thoughts were headed. "So... Show me your training! Let's see what you learned!" Mae demanded.

Tohru glanced down as he walked across the sand. In his palm, he held the first Kiandri Orb that he'd ever obtained. This particular one had been handily won by the Orderite man walking just a few paces ahead of him. The dragon that had been slain for it had hardly even seemed to put up a fight, and for some reason, the young Dovaa was... saddened by that. He didn't really feel any affinity toward Kiandris, but he'd always thought they were... wild and untamed (certainly not like him at all). So to see one be put down, gruesomely, in the middle of its own home... Tohru shivered. Maybe that dragon had also been one who didn't feel any connection to its magic, save for the undeniable itch for freedom that came with it. And if that was the case... Could Tohru also be finished so quickly? So easily? So remorselessly?

Yes... He was sure that was true. Someone with no real talent (Dovaa or not) had no right to expect to do well in combat. Especially one as untrained and untried as he was... The young Kiandri sighed and pocketed the little orb, instead keeping his focus on the two beings that walked ahead of him. So much confidence and strength... Shared by the both of them... They were obviously very good friends, as well, although, maybe that just came with the Bond.

His golden orbs snapped to the Orderite as they were suddenly facing each other. "I-I did learn a lot..." Tohru admitted softly. If he said it, and it appeased the other male, then that was enough for him. But there was something blatantly expectant in Mae's voice and posture that obviously meant he was looking for more than just words. Tohru pulled his arms toward himself and glanced at the ground. "You... want me... to fight you?" He whispered. Still facing teh dirt, he shook his head. No matter what the purple-headed Orderite thought Tohru would learn from him, it certainly wouldn't be enough to defeat him in combat. He was pretty sure it was just an excuse the other could use to beat him up. "I can't..." He pleaded softly.

This kid had an awful lot of "can'ts" in him. Didn't he ever get tired of looking down on himself and his abilities? Man, Mae didn't know how anyone could keep up that kind of attitude without being suicidal... But, apparently this little Dovaa was managing it, even if he was little more than a quivering pile of goo because of it... Either way, Mae wasn't prepared to give up on his advances so easily. He'd seen the kid's magic in the Cave, so it wasn't as if he was weak, just unwilling! But if it came right down to it, the teal-eyed male was certain the young Dovaa would still rather attack than be injured or killed. So, if Tohru wouldn't take the opening Mae was so willingly prepared to offer... That was just another disadvantage for him!

As Mae prepared to launch his first assault, heedless of the Kiandri's desires, Darke sent him disapproving vibes. He could even hear the Alihora's pleading voice whispering through his mind, 'He's just a child, Mae.' Darke hissed softly. 'There's just no sense in fighting out here where no one will find you if you get hurt! Let's call it a day for-'

The Orderite boy ignored the rest. There was no need for him to waste his time listening, or for Darke to waste his thoughts thinking thoughts that Mae would ignore anyway. Tohru's eyes were still on him, so he'd a least see that Mae was going to attack before he actually hit him. And the purple-haired boy kind of thought that would help him to dodge, or block, or retaliate. Anything. Mae had even decided it was best not to use the full extent of his strength on an unwilling Dovaa.

So when his fist connected very solidly, and very harshly with the side of Tohru's cheek, even Mae was stunned.

User ImageTohru realized a little too late that he was expected to move rather than just take it, as he usually did. But there was brief, lingering second, just before the little Kiandri shut his eyes, when time seemed to stand still. And Tohru saw Mae's teal orbs darken in confusion. The Dovaa was already firmly planted, anticipating an attack, and when his gaze fleetingly locked with the Orderite's, he knew there was nothing to be done about what was to come. It was already too late for both of them.

He squeezed his eyes shut and braced himself for the crushing blow that sent him sailing backwards across the sand. The force of the Orderite's fist literally picked him up off the ground and tossed him through the air like a rag doll. Tohru may have even had the decency to be embarrassed for his frailty, if a mind-numbing headache hadn't erupted across his skull almost instantaneously. As his back skidded across the ground, he genuinely believed that he may never move again. That Mae had hit him so hard that it had ruptured whichever part of his brain facilitated movement. And sense, apparently.

He was hardly even aware of the fact that he whined as he curled around himself, half waiting for another blow, but also fairly certain that he wouldn't be able to feel it through this already intense pain. He'd though being burned and slapped was bad, but being decked in the face was suddenly much worse. In some dark and remote corner of his mind, he felt a sharp stab of anger at the other boy. But as soon as he identified it, it dissipated, and didn't resurface again.

User ImageMae's mouth slipped open in a surprised gape as he tossed the smaller Dovaa through the air. A part of him knew he was supposed to dart over to Tohru, apologize, make sure he was alright... But his most immediate action was just to stare at him, wondering why he hadn't moved, like any sane human being. Hadn't it been obvious that Mae was going to attack? He hadn't thought Tohru was slow... mentally while they were in the cave, but maybe the Dovaa had a mental deficiency... Mae frowned skeptically at the younger boy. It wasn't until Darke sent a warning rumble of disapproval through the bond that the Orderite hesitantly trudged over to the lightning lad. He crouched down, extending a hand that he only half hoped Tohru would take. "So are you... uh, okay?" He asked uncertainly, rubbing the back of his head with his other hand.

From behind, Darke snorted, giving his tail a flick. 'Is that really the best you can do?' He demanded tersely, his echoing voice wafting across their link.

Mae could only roll his eyes and grimace. 'You don't think it's weird that he didn't move when I lunged for him?' The Orderite retorted.

User ImageTohru couldn't help but wince as Mae approached him, his eyes going wide and expectant for another blow. He leaned away fearfully from the offered hand, staring hesitantly at it as it moved ever so slowly toward him. The Orderite was just waiting to strike him again, Tohru was sure of it. As soon as the young Dovaa let his guard down, he'd be rewarded with another hit to the face. Hadn't Mae hurt him enough to be satisfied yet? Not just out here, but in that cave too (maybe that was unintentional... but maybe not)? The Orderite was just too reckless and careless for him. He whined a bit as his movements to escape the boy agitated his forming bruises.

He tipped his head away from the Orderite, careful not to make eye contact. "I-I'm alright..." He whispered softly, slowly inching himself backward across the ground and away from Maeron. It was time to get away from the abusive boy. He didn't think he could handle being with him any longer... "I should probably be getting home..." Tohru murmured, gingerly getting to his feet. he glanced out toward the horizon. Mae had traveled with him almost half of the way. It wasn't too far off now. Surely he could make it that far on his own...

He turned back to the Orderite and offered him a small, stiff bow. "Thank you for letting me travel with you. Maybe we'll meet again sometime." His golden orbs flicked to the Alihora, and he smiled softly. "You as well, Darke. Thank you." With that said, Tohru departed, leaving the two Bonded alone together.

User ImageMae itched his cheek in confusion. Well, at least Tohru was capable of walking, so he couldn't be too hurt. With a shrug, Mae turned back to Darke. "Weird kid, huh?" he chuckled in amusement, plodding back toward his companion. He grinned slyly at the memory of the Dovaa's last words. "He definitely liked you, though!" Mae beamed, giving Darke a nudge in the shoulder with his elbow.

The Alihora huffed. "As he should! He probably would've liked you too if you weren't such an a**." The Aiskala informed him matter-of-factly.

Mae simply shrugged. "Doesn't matter. There's plenty more people who'll have the chance to admire me. Let's head back into town for now." The Orderite advised, fanning his wings and taking off with Darke following just behind.
