 George zipped along between fronds of seaweed, using his forelegs to paddle and his tail, extending and curling, to propel him through the water. The morning was still young - dawn had barely begun to leak into the sky above the surface - and George was determined to live his newly earned adulthood to the fullest. His coming-of-age ceremony had gone smoothly, and it was time for his first robbery... Or well, not so much a robbery as picking up whatever he could find to bring home. But first, he had to fetch his best friend.
The good news was that Odhrán lived near the delta, but the bad news was that the water was far from appealing there. It tasted strange, smelled even stranger... And his gray-green friend was obsessed with the river, which, if possible, was even more strange. Fresh water just struck him as flavorless and almost slimy, not to mention the plants and other gross things that took root in the rivers. But, now that he and Ronnie had officially entered adulthood, well... George supposed he would have to stop being a baby about it and get on with the exploration.
Pausing near the entrance of the seaweed grove where Ronnie had taken up residence after moving out of his mother's place, George hooted and waited for his friend to appear, circling impatiently.
Odhrán was busy packing up his exploration kit when he heard George outside. Cursing under his breath, the small seathi surveyed his things. He had his rope, tied tightly around a bundle of seaweed for a snack; after all, one could never know what was edible in strange places. Better to bring one's own food. "Just a minute!" he called. It was time for their first exploration, Ronnie knew: they'd set a time and day, three days after their comings-of-age, but they hadn't set the place. He was hoping to convince George that they should go upriver, and maybe their new "maturity" would make George relent. Though Ronnie doubted it, the fact that he and George often thought on the same wavelength gave him confidence that it was at least possible.
Of course, the second function of the rope was that Ronnie could easily loop it around his friend's midsection and tow him upriver.
But you were only supposed to do that in emergencies. Or so he'd been told.
Grinning at the thought, Ronnie transferred everything into the sack his mother had given him for his adulthood present. She'd told him that she'd stolen it from the natives years ago, dragging it from the beach when they weren't looking. It was made of some kind of durable material that had lasted, but was beginning to fray at the edges. In went his rope-and-lunch, followed by the glass beads he'd gained from ransoming a metal shinguard. That was it - everything he had. Closing the flap, he looped the strap around his body and wiggled to make sure it was secure. He could almost hear George whirling impatiently outside, just like he was wont to do.
Bunching up his tail muscles, Ronnie used a nearby rock to launch himself out into the open water, shooting past George on accident. It was all well and good, though - he'd managed to get a couple yards upriver. I guess George won't be deciding today, after all, he thought, and looked back. "Let's go!" he called, and started swimming again.
