Zanpakuto Name: Heart of the Soldier
Zanpakuto Appearance: [x]
✣ ══════════════════════[ Shikai ]═══════════════════════ ✣
Shikai Incantation: "Beat true, Heart of the Soldier"
Shikai Appearance: Due to the fact that Callahan achieved his Shikai through less than traditional methods, he accidentally locked his Zanpakuto in permanent release. His sword always appears as a saber, with a gold and black hilt, sheathed at his side. It is slightly smaller and more lightweight than a katana, only being able to be wielded in one hand, though this also makes the blade more swift. However, before the release incantation is uttered, the blade cannot perform any of the special abilities; after the incantation is said, the blade begins to hum, signalling the released state.
Shikai Abilities:
- First Rhythm: Steady Pulse - This ability is triggered by the blade blocking a direct, melee attack after release. When the attack is successfully blocked, the blade releases a small sonic pulse through the blade that gives the opponent a ringing in their ears for three [3] posts following the successful defense. Though this is a sonic pulse, the ability essentially has no other effect than to cause a ringing in their ears that proves to be a slight distraction.
Second Rhythm: Limping Pulse - When the blade is swung and the attack is named, a sonic wave is released at the opponent. The speed changes in the travel of the wave and its direction sometimes switches, making it difficult to predict when and where the wave will hit. If the attack lands successfully, it will stun an opponent for one [1] post and cause a ringing in their ears for three [3] posts after. That said, since the wave does sometimes move slowly, it is avoidable.
Third Rhythm: Racing Pulse - Standing in place, when the attack name is said, a burst of three quick sonic waves is released in a circle around the user. The circle has a diameter of about ten feet, and the sonic waves dissipate outside this distance; they can be barely felt about five feet out, and cause no extreme effect at that point. However, within the radius, the waves have similar properties as the First Rhythm, however have a shorter duration of lingering effects. Immediately upon impact, the opponent will be staggered, however they will only have a ringing in their ears for one [1] post.
✣ ══════════════════════[ Bankai ]═══════════════════════ ✣
Bankai Name: Heart of the Soldier, Blood of my Oath
Bankai Appearance: With the Bankai release, the sword summons the Zanpakuto's horse spirit into the battle. Keeping the blade the same, the user is now mounted, and therefore a slightly more difficult opponent to fight with on foot. Like Shinigami, the horse can stand on air and has the same agility skills as the user.
Bankai Abilities:
- Mounted Combatant - The main ability of the Bankai is in allowing the user to be on a mount while in battle. The mount has the same agility skills (Shunpo, etc.) as the user, however no more. All and all, the agility of the mount is parallel to the user, with the added bonus of the horseback advantage against opponents wielding bladed weapons.
Pulse Control - Within an area of a ten foot radius, the Bankai can selectively absorb certain sounds. Opponents in this area will effectively have their sounds chosen for them, as the blade puts up a sort of barrier that blocks out most noise and filters some to throw off the perception of the opponent.
Blood Frenzy - Though the other attacks of the Bankai are limited, the real strength of the release lies in the Blood Frenzy state. By pouring a decent amount of blood from the user's hand onto the horse, the horse will change from a normal, brown, to a blood red and black, almost demonic horse. For the next ten [10] posts, the horse's speed will be increased by 1.5x, and the user will have access to one additional attack. At the end of these posts, the blade will revert out of Bankai.
Blood Frenzy: Bleeding Pulse - Using access to the user's blood, a slash of the sword will release a combination melee and sonic based attack. A red projectile, about three feet long, is released which can launch as far as fifteen feet before falling to the ground. If it collides, it can slice through skin with the same strength as a blade, and additionally sends a sonic pulse through the opponent which will stagger them for one [1] post and cause a lingering ringing in their ears for three [3] posts after that.
✣ ══════════════════════[ Background Information ]═══════════════════════ ✣
Personality:
- Gentleman: Growing up, Callahan was always taught proper manners and behaviors around others. Quite simply, his personality could be paraphrased as that of a gentleman. He is polite, with good manners and etiquette, and familiar with proper ways of interacting with others. Among these trends in his personality, Callahan is extremely polite with women, to the point where some have criticized him for looking down on them. More than this, however, Callahan simply has been taught how to behave around women - pull out chairs, stand when they enter the room, et cetera - and has been unable to break these habits, though many over the years have told him to do so. That said, his politeness also carries through as a strong point, especially in particular diplomatic situations.
Honorable: In all of Callahan's actions, he carries himself with a certain sort of honor and dignity. Among these traits include the fact that Callahan will never fight when he has the upper hand, nor kill an unarmed opponent. Furthermore, however, Callahan is familiar with his own honor, and knows immediately when anyone challenges it. He becomes extremely passionate and defensive toward those who disrupt his honor, and has been known to initiate duels on the sole grounds of a dispute of honor. That said, Callahan always honors debts and promises, and is a very reliable candidate for any Captain spot in this regard.
Calm: Having received a decent amount of military training as a human, Callahan is very strategic, and skilled at keeping a level head and calm disposition in any tough situation. Though he fiercely defends his honor, he hardly ever lashes out at those who challenge it and, more often, tells them in a matter-of-fact sort of way that a duel is the logical course of action. Among the Shinigami, Callahan is a skilled leader with his natural ability to use his calmness to bring logic to any highly illogical situation. Callahan has even been known to calmly lead soldiers into suicide missions without lying to them, but rather inspiring them with his own sort of bizarre confidence and coolness.
Bashful: Generally fairly calm, Callahan gets rather flustered when he is complimented, or around someone for whom he holds romantic feelings. With his generally calm exterior, this provides an amusing juxtaposition, as he tries to stay calm while barely being able to speak. Luckily, Callahan is neither complimented nor holds any crushes, thus this side of his personality is rarely, if ever, shown.

History:
John Thomas Callahan Jr. was born in Virginia, United States, around 1840. He had no siblings who lived past infancy, and thus received the complete and total attention from his parents. This served to both a blessing and a curse. While Callahan always knew that his parents loved him, he frequently met rebukes and criticisms for not living up to the full extent of his parents' expectations. In his childhood, Callahan developed a sort of inferiority complex: he didn't grow until he was well into his teens, and thus saw himself as both physically and mentally inferior to his peers. As he aged, Callahan's parents began to see him as farther and farther behind, though this only began to make the young man work even harder to impress them. He set his sights on West Point: his family had a military history, and he knew that he had to achieve this goal in order to finally be the son his parents had hoped for. And, much to his parents surprise, Callahan was accepted into the military academy. Here, he began his military training and excelled in virtually every field. That said, after Callahan graduated, he was sent into a tumultuous period of time for those entering the military. As a young officer, he was stationed under a general who happened to side with the Confederates. Though Callahan had not concerned himself much with the politics of the war, he chose to side with the South as well, and soon found himself passionately devoted to the cause. It was following this cause that Callahan would meet his demise, in 1864, and be sent on to live the next life...
Suddenly, he was not surrounded by a battlefield strewn with the corpses of his men, but rather in a foreign looking village of sorts. He remembered bits of his past, though mostly was too stunned to fully remember. For some reason, he was garbed in Japanese robes, which were strange and foreign yet didn't seem so. Callahan remembered his training, and yet didn't feel that odd living in this place. Quickly, Callahan adjusted. He built up a network of sorts, flustering about the Rukongai districts, and learned more about this new world. Though no longer a military officer, Callahan remained a military man. His passions ran thick, and in the first few years in Rukongai, Callahan encountered a drunk Shinigami who insulted Callahan's honor. A duel ensued, and after a victory, Callahan learned that this was not an acceptable practice. Unknowingly, he had killed a Shinigami, and would now undoubtedly be forced to stand trial by the biased system which controlled the law. At first, Callahan's connections kept him hidden, though he knew that this could not continue for long. After decades of hiding, Callahan was discovered. The Shinigami who discovered him was a man by the name of Kisuke Urahara, of the second division. Callahan surprised Urahara with his lack of violence, and the two actually had a decent chat. Then, Urahara prodded Callahan more into the crime he had committed. Upon discovering the lack of severity of the crime, as well as the circumstances, they came to a mutual agreement that further pursuit would only be a waste of time. Urahara helped Callahan into the human world, and they both agreed that no further violence would ensue; after all, Callahan was not a violent man, he had just come across some unfortunate circumstances regarding the incident with the Shinigami.
In the human world, however, Callahan found himself bored. This life seemed hardly better than that in a prison cell, and so Callahan found himself wandering about. It was in his wandering that Callahan came across a half-dead Shinigami, barely holding on to life. He rushed over to help, and had the Shinigami cling to him, begging Callahan to tell the Shinigami of the strange hollows. Callahan did not know what this meant, or how, but the Shinigami died in his arms before he could further ask. It just so happened that the Shinigami held a sword, which out of curiosity, Callahan took. If there was some sort of threat, Callahan knew he would have to defend himself. And, eventually, the threat did come to him. The American clumsily wielded the katana, but managed to fight off any and all hollows who came after him. Through these events, Callahan would eventually meet none other than Kisuke Urahara himself. At first, they simply caught up, before Callahan explained events to him. Urahara explained what the blade was - a Zanpakuto - and after ensuring that Callahan had not killed anyone, agreed to help train the soldier to wield the blade. After training and meditation, Callahan barely managed to achieve Shikai, though he locked his blade in his inability to control his reiatsu. That said, to some extent now, Callahan felt like he was a Shinigami.
He spent the next several years training alongside Urahara, eventually achieving a rough sort of Bankai. The release was weak, but Callahan spent his time trying to master it on his own. Eventually, he began to drift away from Urahara, and longed to return to Soul Society. Before the soldier made his decision, he met a man dressed in the black Shinigami robes and the Kanji for 10 on his back carrying a human woman, alongside a human man. After hearing everything, Callahan saw some of the flaws with Soul Society, as well as gaining a romanticized view of the relationship between spirits and humans. He did not return to Soul Society, instead setting out to achieve greatness in the human world. All around the world, he fought off hollows with his Zanpakuto, though eventually made his way back to Japan, as though to return to the Soul Society, at least in his head. All romantic notions had vanished, and the former military officer matured to face the reality in front of him. Nearly two decades after meeting that shinigami and the woman, Callahan received a summon from Urahara. Apparently, Urahara believed that he might be an aid to the current war between the Shinigami and the threat which forced Urahara out of Soul Society. Callahan refused, hoping to live a quiet life and die out in the middle of nowhere. However, a few months later, he received another request, this time in a war against the Quincy, and reluctantly accepted.
However, working with the Shinigami was a better experience than Callahan could have ever hoped for. Suddenly, he felt refreshed, and even after the war spent some time living among the Shinigami. He became associated with the tenth division and, after a few years, was pushed to go through the Shinigami Academy. He graduated in about a year, as he was already proficient in everything except kido, and gifted in learning kido quickly, and entered into the tenth division. He rose through the ranks quickly and, about ten years after the war, the tenth division captain was sent to join the Royal Guard. Of the candidates for the position, Callahan was the most qualified. He accepted the position, and has been holding it ever since. While at first many were hesitant to trust him, over the years he has proven to be a great and trustworthy leader.
