In the deep forest, it was easy to imagine that the old, rotten log was really a monster who had long ago fallen asleep beneath the snow. Summer never came to these parts, he thought, as he circled the beast. Not since the evil suti witch had cast her spell of eternal winter upon the lands.

Satisfied with the story in his head, he swooped down to land, legs spread and head held high, next to the monstrous form. It would have been a dramatic entry, if he hadn't slipped forward slightly on the ice. No one was watching though, so he just caught his balance then returned to the story.

"Beast! You are not aligned with the evil- one. Will you come fight along side me to restore peace to this land?"

Nicoletta knew that Daenerys would scold her for wandering so far from the khalasar, but she couldn't bring herself to care. She was hungry and tired of chewing on the same waxy leaves. She wandered around now hoping to find some patch of greens somehow left untouched by winter's chill. It was an unlikely goal, but Nicoletta was determined to try. For all she knew, the angeni of delicious plants might be right around the next clump of bushes, just waiting to bestow her bounty upon Nicoletta and the rest of the herd.

She passed by a holly bush. No magical delicious plants. She passed around another. Still no delicious plants. She passed around a third and there were no delicious plants, but there was a young stallion menacing a log.

"Ha!" She snorted without thinking, incredulous at what she was suddenly seeing. "What are you doing?"

That voice... that voice had come from behind him. He straightened himself up, and folded his four wings tight against his body before turning to face the strange mare who had appeared suddenly in the clearing. A small voice in the back of his head wanted to ask if she would play the evil suti-witch, but it was pretty obvious by her tone that she thought he was being childish, and he wasn't all that naive any more. He turned to face her, "Uhh... You know, I don't really have an answer for that which doesn't come across as being terribly silly." In his head it was all still perfectly reasonable. "What are you doing out here watching strangers?"

Nicoletta had to laugh at his honesty. Most stallions, even young ones, would have invented an excuse to try to save face. "I'm looking for food," she said, giving him truth in return for his. She thought about adding a bit about her imaginary angeni but then blinked as she noticed his four wings. He was an angeni! Her heart skipped a beat at the coincidence and she couldn't help but blurt out the first thing that came to mind.

"You aren't the angeni of plants, are you? Because THAT would be a very strange coincidence."

"Angeni of plants?" he shifted his weight and ruffled his wings a bit. It was almost tempting to lie and let her think he was something special, but no. She'd certainly ask right away for some kind of proof and he wouldn't be able to provide it. "No, I'm not an 'of' anything. Unless there's an angeni of making up dumb stories alone in the snow. That might be me."

He started walking toward her, "I am familiar with the area though. If it's food you're looking for I'm sure we could find a place that hasn't been cleared of all it's greenery yet."

"Really?" Nicoletta perked up at the offer. A local would definitely know where to find the best food. She was about to heartily accept when she remembered a small detail... the rest of the herd.

"How far do you think we would need to go? My herd will worry if I am gone for too long... And if there is enough, I'm sure they would enjoy some better food as well." It pained her to admit that she might have to share the bounty with all those other hungry mouths, but her nagging conscience would sour the feast if she hoarded it to herself.

"Oh," his heart sunk a bit. Feeding several in this weather was much harder than feeding one. "You're with a herd? How many are there?" The idea of chewing bark before winter was out made his stomach churn, but he knew deep down the hero in his stories wouldn't keep the stores to himself.

"There are around ten of us," said Nicoletta, not remembering the exact number. They had gotten a couple new followers lately and she still wasn't used to the increase. She couldn't actually remember some of their names, either. It was an embarrassing thing to admit, which is exactly why she didn't plan on admitting it to anyone.

"They aren't far away." She looked over her shoulder in the direction of the khalasar. They were probably even still within shouting distance.

"Ten or so..." he repeated. "Okay, that's not nearly as many as I was expecting. Well, follow me. I had hidden away a small cache of apples in the fall, they should still be good enough to eat, and enough to split among your friends."

He gestured northward, then turned to head that way, "I thought I knew all the herds in these parts, are you and yours just passing through?"

Apples? Nicoletta hadn't heard anything so lovely in her life. She hadn't thought to see apples again until next fall. She had no idea how this stallion could have the willpower to save enough apples to feed ten for so long. She would have eaten them all within the first month of winter in his position.

"Yes, just passing through," she said, after brief apple distraction. "We don't stay in one place for long. I don't think that Daenerys feels entirely at home in these lands."

He hated walking through snow, but what sort of valiant knight would he be if he flew ahead and left the fair maiden to walk on her own?

He nodded, "Well that's good. I mean, the bit about passing through. Not that it's good that you're going, really... I'm sure your heard is nice and all. I just mean that, um, maybe you'll find somewhere to call home?"

There was a large tree by the base of the hill and Ignatius seemed to be heading there, "If that's what you want. I mean... The apples should be in the hollow of that tree over there. I hope the raccoons haven't found them."

Nicoletta followed the mystery angeni, too used to the snow by now to care that she was plowing through even more of it. There was something about him that made him easy to talk to, though Nicoletta rarely had a hard time talking to anyone. It was just nice meeting someone out of the herd for once. She cared deeply for her friends within the herd, but she craved new people and new conversations sometimes.

"I think we move around so much because Daenerys doesn't want to get attached to one place," said Nicoletta, knowing fully well that her companion had no idea who Daenerys was, but feeling like talking about her all the same. "She wants to go back to her homeland someday, so she can't really put down roots here, you know?"
PostPosted: Mon Feb 10, 2014 9:54 pm

His ears perked up as he started digging at the base of the tree, "Homeland? Where's that?"

Once the snow was cleared he began working at moving a large rock that had been wedged into the trunk of the tree. It was clear now how he'd avoided the temptation to plunder his apple cache. The hiding place was difficult to open, and just as difficult to seal off again. He had always planned to open it only once.

As the rock rolled away from the hole, a few apples tumbled out. They had remained largely untouched by pests and had kept fairly well. There weren't enough to fully feed a herd of ten, more of a hearty snack, but it was something.

Ignatius looked back at Nicoletta, beaming, "How's that?"

"She comes from this land called Westeros," said Nicoletta. "It's across the sea, and-" Describing Daenerys' homeland suddenly became a lot less interesting when there were apples spilling over the ground. Her mouth dropped open and she stared at them in open delight.

"That's wonderful! Do you need any sort of payment? We have some trade goods." Though she was not the one in charge of their stores, she would personally be willing to promise this stallion just about anything if it got her some apples.
